Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes ~ The Love I Lost 1973 Disco Purrfection Version

- This song has been recognized as a pivotal moment in the history of disco. It established the dynamics that would define disco from that day on. One of the hallmarks was the open hi hat in between the kick drum beats that Earl used to propel the song forward, galloping towards ecstasy! Another hallmark was the use of strings which were recorded live as with the rest of the orchestra, and not used to "sweeten" the mix (i.e overdubbed).
This had the effect of pulling you along into the groove of the song as they all were in the same studio so the group energy dynamic helped them to create the sonics that gave life to the sad lyrics....the beautiful energy of the pretty music contrasts oh so sweetly with the loss of love lyrics that the breakup could have been avoided and Pendergrass is preaching to us all over the wonderful music track about being careful not to do the same thing.
I was soooo stoked to get my paws on these stems, the classic "The Love I Lost" I set about putting the remix together and it took me about six hours to finish it...one interesting thing was that at the very end when the percussion wells up to close out the song, there is a very familiar rhythm you may recognize that was used to open a completely different blockbuster tune that got in trouble for copyrights in 1979.
Anyway, Kenny and Leon got busy with Harold Melvin and His Blue Notes with a ballad called "The Love I Lost". During the initial session, the orchestra felt that the slow and sweet arrangement was not working, so drummer Earl counted off (1-2-3-4!) and added the one element that was missing turning the song into a disco anthem sung by one of R&B's greatest voices. It spent two weeks on top the R&B survey, then peaked at #7 on the Hot100.
It was about year too early for the disco chart since that began in November of 1974, but you can bet it would have been #1 for weeks. "Bad Luck" from 1975 was there for eleven weeks, almost three months! Pendergrass feels that the song popularity was buoyed by the stellar production and the song's subject of love. The sadness of losing a love never sounded so joyous and Pendergrass' fervent pleading to take him back still gives me chills...the man is supremely talented and the marriage of song and vocals makes for pure gold. - Видеоклипы

Before disco was called "disco" . . . . . .
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊❤😊
Ah yes. 1973. I remember it well. Madras, cuffed bell-bottom pants, platform shoes, silk shirts. The works. Good times. Awesome sauce 👌.
hip huggers and tube tops
If you ever met them like I did back in 1977 you would say they were the best band ever for the era
In my youth, Saturday mornings were filled with the sounds of aspiring neighborhood bands. They practiced the soulful tunes of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, each with their own unique twist.
Absolute perfection!!!! I was in Graduate School at the University of Illinois when I first heard this... It's 2024 and it is as beautiful and as new as it was then. Thank you so very very much for uploading this and giving me a trip down Memory Lane!!!
I'm an old white guy and I love these guys too. Anything TSOP......music transcends all.
I was 21 years old. Amazing how music can put you back in time. What a feeling.
I was 25
I was in the spirit realm. 🤭
I was born in 1952, also.
THIS IS MUSIC...
REAL MUSIC...
CLASSIC FOREVER.
Wow this song! It takes me back to watching SOOOOUUUL TRAIN!!!! RIP CORNELIUS ❤ I'M DANCING CAUSE NOBODY'S WATCHING! 😊
This is another singing sensation from the many wonderful Black Bands the made the sixties and seventies a great era to be part of.
Damn, Teddy! We miss you so much! I was in Philadelphia in 1981 when he had his MVA. As a senior medical student doing an Anesthesia rotation at Jefferson Hospital, I watched when he lay on the OR table being prepped for surgery. They planned to fuse his neck vertebrae for stabilization. The Chair of Anesthesia told us that Teddy had a high cervical fracture and need mechanical ventilation. Thank goodness Teddy improved and lived for many more years.
I was 15yrs old, and I had my boombox playing Harold Melvin and the blue notes in Brooklyn NY and until this day 2024 I still listen to it, makes me happy and sad, may they rest in peace 😢
Happy Birthday to Harold Melvin of the Blue 💙 Notes 🎶 Blessings and Hugs 💖💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
I don't know what to say, so lost for words. But I will say these words, utterly spectacular, magnificent, superb, music that penetrates and moves the soul.
I became a DJ because my mom use to play music like this on the record player.
Love that Philadelphia sound!
Fabulous song never tire of it.
I ❤this song
Gamble and Huff writing... Teddy Pendergrass singing about lost love... Harold Melvin, The Blue Notes and MFSB (with the Mighty Three)... just absolute perfection!

50 years after this first came out and STILL the same beautiful and pure classic that it has always been!❤
YESSSSS!!!!!
Wow, I'm 63, which means I was around 13 years old
Meravigliosi !!che bella !!e che ricordi io...
One of the most heartbreaking songs ever. If you ever was in this situation you would understand.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK 😃
I know the feeling, I was f….up from Vietnam. I lost !
I swear to God I do understand man boy do I understand
I've always called this the most joyful, life affirming breakup song ever! It's definitely one of my favorite Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes songs. Thanks for giving it the Disco Cat Purrfection treatment!
How can a song about lost love be so damn joyful? Only Gamble & Huff, HMATBN, and Teddy P. know the answer!
That's what I have always thought! I love songs that celebrate the emotion they convey, regardless of what that emotion is, but few do. This is the best example I have ever heard and just one of the many reasons I love it so much. Here's Teddy wailing "I'm in misery! Can't you see!" yet you want to get up and dance like a maniac and yell "I lost it" along with the chorus.
Most definitely
Absolutely! LOL
Thank you so much
The best ! Harold ❤
Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes were an American soul and R&B vocal group. One of the most popular Philadelphia soul groups of the 1970s, the group's repertoire included soul, R&B, doo-wop, and disco. Founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the middle of the 1950s as The Charlemagnes, the group is most noted for several hits on Gamble and Huff's Philadelphia International label between 1972 and 1976, although they performed and recorded until Melvin's death in 1997. Despite group founder and original lead singer Harold Melvin's top billing, the Blue Notes' most famous member was Teddy Pendergrass, their lead singer during the successful years at Philadelphia International
That beautiful sound of Philadelphia!
Absolutely an all time classic from the greatest musical era..the 70s..love it !

The beat ,the voices,the best!......
DJ DiscoCat you’re the best!! Evoking memories. I had a love many years ago. She was two years older and stated I was infatuated. My heart was crushed. I joined the military and became a man. Word is she never married and became a missionary in a Baptist church. Help me understand somebody. Was it me or was it her? Only God knows…1976💖💖💖💖💖💖
DJDiscoCat, thank you, thank you for this! It is purrrrrfection indeed. I first heard this song, and danced to it in Chicago, Illinois, when I was a graduate student at the University of Illinois working on my Ph.D in Romance Languages. I fell immediately in love with it. Everytime the DJ (who happened to have been my roommate) played it, everyone left whatever they were doing and flocked the dance floor like sardines in a can! It brings back great memories. I was 23 years old then. I am going on 73 in November 2023 and this song has taken me back to a moment in time that was like Camelot... a place that will remain in the mists of the glorious past, yet still very real for those of us who were lucky enough and priviledged enough to have experienced those years. Once again, thank you. G-d bless!!!
Que pasada de canción ,me pone el vello de punta , que recuerdos me trae de la Discoteca ❤
Still miss him and still love his music

Mmmmm mmmm mmmm. This, here... is a dance song.... I danced to it in the 70's and I'm dancing to it in. 2019.. Which happens to be my 40th HS reunion. I'm blessed to have grown up in the 70's and 80's... CAN YA DIG IT?!
I was in my 20s when this came out. All these years and I still love it. Teddy's amazing voice is timeless.
This song says it all. ❤️🩹
My, my, my. I fell in love with The Love I Lost back in the Fall of 1973! I've listened to it many times over the next 45+ years - not lamenting a lost love, but for the iconic disco beat and rifts that seemed to have helped set the stage for disco to come. You've done this song Proud!! A mix of a very, very long time favorite expounding on the original to listen longer!!!!!
well said
You forgot Teddy & the guys’ great angst.
I remember where I was when I first heard this song in 1973! It remains my favorite after all these many years.
It was the break up song that year. I was just talking to my friend from high school about dancing to the song at Trude Hellers in NYC when we were 16. Music really is a Time Machine
SUMMER 2019 🍹🌴🍹

This song does address a rather common mishap, but it’s better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all!
Exactly. That would be much WORSE, to have never loved! 🫂❤️

Back to the jukebox at The Golden Horseshoe in old Pioneer Square downtown Seattle (1973). My first intro to Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, and that soulful voice of Teddy Pendergrass only then introduced to us. We are but 4yrs from a Golden Anniversary! Thank you DJDCV2 for keeping my gray cells well stirred up in my memory stew. Thank you.😆
What could be better than hearing your favourite songs of your youth? I know a remixed and extended version!!! Brilliant job DJDiscoCat, thank you. During this period I was living in a little town in England called Newbury. We had first fallen in love with Motown and then soul, funk, disco and Northern Soul. There were discos every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. It was a wonderful time to be a teenager 😎.
Same across the pond in Southern New England.
Extension plaisir......l ❤

Eventually they would make up then l can along Born 1973 5 lb 4 oz l was a preemie
My mother she only smoke at night also my mother was a worry about I think she have no control of and they always worried about me cuz I was the youngest and spoil I never had to work hard for nothing.
