I've had some troubles with tanks within the last couple months I've gotten into the hobby. Luckily one guppy has survived everything and she's been with me the longest. I've got her now in a 20 gal tall community tank with 3 other guppies(1 male with 3 females)/6 ember tetras/4 albino corys/1 female betta with plenty of plants and hiding places. She's nice and chunky and im always happy to see her

So I've only had fish for about a week and half, but I have platys and freaking love them. They're so active and cute, and never seem to be afraid of anything. They even follow the gravel vacuum around when I clean their tank. Probably just looking for food, but it's adorable.

I have found recently, with my Platy tank, that they can be somewhat trained. Also, I can put my face right on top of the front glass, and they are just completely okay with that and most get extremely close. There is no evidence of fear. They explore my face! In my 40 years keeping Platies, only recently have I experienced such a friendly gesture from them.

I've probably been very unlucky, but the female platies that I had were nightmares in my aquarium.
They were so greedy with food. Stealing wafers from bristlenose plecos, corys ( even ripping off a corycat mouth during the process. He healed up eventually and the barbells regrew).
They were terrorising a dwarf gourami as well.
Never had an issue with the males however, even now when no females are left in the tank, they are perfectly chill with everyone.
Pretty sure I had crazy platies, but that really discouraged me ever having them again.

This is based off of personal preference and space, I would go with guppies because I can always mix and match breeds to make a hybrid tank. Boom instant genetic diversity and healthy fish, plus you have a nice display for as long as you cull deformed fish and less colorful ones.

I like the larger size of platies; they're just bigger enough to open up a lot of other tankmates that might eat guppies. On the flip side I guess guppies would be better with nano fish maybe?

Now Having the Adopted 4 Blue-eyed Baby Platies and my Guppy Colony (AKA my Fabulous Flappy-Flappies 🥰) for a month and a half now I have something to share about them..
Since last year ,I have had a 45 gallon hex tank In my possession from a purchase on craigslist,Always waiting for the right type of fish or fishes to fill it. I have adopted a few small fish since then but always holding out for something else. Well I'm very glad I was patient.
They have turned my empty and sadlooking 45 gallon hex into a non-stop flurry of color, activity, and aquatic sunshine for my Living Room. 😁Always on the move, they are adorable and adored by my family 🤩
PS:Dear Jason and Joanna, as a footnote I wanted to also say another Thank you ..When I spoke about them in the live chat the week before I picked them all up, I was concerned about anything I might do wrong with their care. You were absolutely right. I have dealt with much harder things to conquer when I adopted all my cichlids who were half sick, half injured or both.So far, I have found the guppies and platies to be MUCH easier to take care of then my cichlids. Thank you today and always for everything 🤗

Yep same here. I will never buy guppies from other than high end strain breeders again. The one from my LFS are so sick with diseases. I always thought buying more is the way but it turns out u better of buying either trio or just female that are already pregnantfrom good breeders. That way less chance of disease. I even go as far as seperating the babies and the mom to make sure i raise new generation "free" from disease. While getting many is faster, you will be dealing with diseases that can wipe out the entire community. Startjng fresh is not that bad, i started with 1 mom and after 2 months i have 45 new super healthy guppies.

    • @CarefulAtheist
      @CarefulAtheist 2 года назад +2

As a beginner, like yourself, and considering that it would be a tank your child could grow attached to, I would never suggest stocking it with the purpose of breeding guppies and platies. The first time a young child see a guppy gobble up their own fry it spells the end of a rewarding hobby for that young mind. Rather get yourself 4 or 5 colorful male guppies, and add to that 3 or 4 platies. Keep the tank reasonably bare, add some colorful gravel, and maybe one of those small LED lights with built-in bubble maker. If you'd decide to add decorations to the tank...keep it small. You want the emphasis to be on the fish...not the decorations.
Please keep in mind that with 7 to 9 fish in a 10-gallon tank a weekly 30% water change will become mandatory to ensure they remain healthy.

They say one inch of fish per gallon of water. I would probably go for fewer fish than that tho, just to help keep the bioload low. I would say five male guppies, and get some plants. Fish feel more confident if they have hiding places available. I have live plants, but silk plants are good. Try to avoid plastic since the edges can be sharp and snag the fins. Be sure the tank is cycled before adding fish. They make products that add a lot of beneficial bacteria to the water and make the cycling much faster. Maybe check out videos from Girl Talks Fish, she does a lot of small tank advice.

Thanks everyone! I cycled my tank for 48 hours with aqua safe plus, and healthy bacteria. I added silk plants and a couple plastic, but will replace with silk when I have the chance. We went today and decided on 1 neon blue dwarf gourami, 7 black neon tetras, and 1 mystery snail. I checked AqAdvisor and it said we have not over stocked the tank. Hopefully we will have some happy fishys. Any advice would be appreciated though!

2 months ago, I've purchased 1 male and 1 female blue moscow. I bought only a pair, because they were the last 2 blue guppy the seller had.
The male since die, I suspected that it was near the end of its life, because the veil was prety big, but the female survive and now I have about 100 or more fry spread about 4 generations, living among the surface vegetation. I overfeed, so aggression towards the fry is non existing. I think I will let the colony grow, and if by any chance the tank will become overcrowded, I can always sell the mature ones back to the seller, especially since he was not able to bring more blue guppy to sell. :)

I have a 20g guppy tank. I also have black Venezuelan Corys and orange laser Corys in with them.
I had pairs of beautiful strains, and had intended to separate the boys and girls, but moving changed all that. So my pure strains have disappeared but I have some of the most amazing color combinations with all of them in the same tank. Each group of babies is a surprise.
They’re in hyper-procreating mode right now, which sucks bc I’m preparing to move so setting up another tank here for the babies doesn’t seem doable. I’m doing water changes every 6 days and it’s heavily planted. Contrary to everything I’ve read and heard that guppies eat their babies, mine don’t. They totally ignore the babies - and you’re right, they are adorable. Hope to close at least 3 wks before I’m outta here so I can get a tank set up in the new place by the time I move. I have extra filters, so I’m going to transfer current filter to new tank along with some rocks and plants, hopefully to speed up cycling.
I’m buying a house, so I can do multiple tanks without landlord interference, finally. Right now I’m glad I have just one tank! I’m nervous as hell about moving these guys. At least it’s only 15 miles!
Is it worth saving the water from the current tank for the new tank, or doesn’t it make any difference?

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics
      @PrimeTimeAquatics  2 года назад

Good question - you son't need to save the water. The filter media, decorations and substrate hold the vast majority of your beneficial bacteria.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics I’m hoping the filter, decor will be enough - I’m changing the substrate. It was sold as sand, but it’s more gravelly than sand, and the stuff that’s real sand is sold as just substrate. I want real sand for my Corys. Right now the substrate is black and so are the Corys so it’s hard to keep tabs on them. I’m changing it to soft, white sand - harder to keep clean, but my Corys will be happier and it’s easier to see the fish and shrimp. Thanks for the info. With all the stuff I have to move, and getting new appliances, moving the fish is going to be the hardest and most stressful part. I’m just glad I don’t have a bunch of tanks to move! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Totally on another topic , but....
I've run into something I've not heard discussed yet. My town in N.H. ( Derry) uses large amounts of chloramine. They say on their website that carbon filters DO NOT remove chloramines and there's a warning for aquarium keepers that you MUST remove chloramine BEFORE putting the water in the tank. I see many keepers adding water conditioner while water changing . That's a problem here. I'm using two sponge filters only. They even advise plant keepers and breweries that this water is detrimental to them. So I find in order to have a zero ammonia reading during a water change before adding water I must use TWO ML. API Water Conditioner PER gallon or I get a PPM of . 50 PPM at least of ammonia per gallon because it's reading chloramine as ammonia. I know that this is over the recommended dosage per the instructions but nothing else is working. I also have plants. This is a Nano 10 gallon cycled tank. My Ph right out of the tap is 8.0 on the high scale.
What do you think? Have you heard of this warning before? Am I going to wreak havoc with my fish by using this amount of water conditioner? So far doesn't seem to be a problem. Should this info be made more widely available? I think so.
No one would know unless they visited the water quality website for this area. I sure didn't until the ammonia issue and that's what my research has yielded. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Oh, and this stuff may cause some rubber parts or synthetic rubber materials in plumbing fixtures to degrade faster than normal.
And they claim it's safe? No, it's just cheaper than chlorine.

I don’t think it matters. Adding the dechlorinator while adding the water is fine.

Platys. No doubt in my mind. The guppies I get from the lfs are too inbred and don’t survive. Platys are nearly bulletproof. The lfs guppies don’t breed true so I ended up with a bunch of mutts that aren’t as pretty as the parents. The Platys are always colorful. And the lfs won’t take mutt guppies except for feeders. Bottom line, since I don’t want to go to extremes to breed fancy guppies, I’ll stick with Platys and enjoy them.

I never put these fish in my tank . Even Jesus can’t multiply fish faster than these breeds can 🤣. You go from 4 -a 1000 in a matter of months . And end up With no where to put them and no one wants them . I also don’t like the way the male guppies harass the females it’s relentless and uncomfortable to watch .

3 pairs of guppies. Poor females, males are harassing non- stop. I couldn't find females to purchase alone, and that's why I got pairs. I was hoping my betta, gourami's and guppies would eat most of the fry. Now I'm wondering if this is not likely based on your comment.
