I've got 2 glofish tetras left from my original school, tank became semi community as my "bully male guppies" would be placed in there. Originally had a small school of neon tetras also, alas failed them while hunting research and being able to eyeball when someone in a tank is off. Had a horrible adult ADHD moment during a water change, cried my butt off while trying to fix, lost each male guppy fortunately only 5 were in there presently. Those glofish tetras not only survived, showed no signs of potentially passing away and were swimming happily like nothing happened. Ok titanium fish I see you.
I've got some White Clouds with some Brilliant Green Rasboras (and some Variatus Platys) and you're right, they are outstanding in every desirable way.
Very interesting list. Agree 100% with your number one. I always tell people if you can't keep White Clouds healthy then fishkeeping is maybe not for you. Just such a nice, hardy little fish. Also good to see the Kribensis getting some love. Underrated fish!
They are so beautiful and I’m using a Sonoran Desert river/creek ecosystem as my inspiration..,their colors would be so perfect! The tank will be Walstad.
Whit clouds where my first fish, amazing little fish that can take a oopsie from a beginner, even after years of fishkeeping it is still one of my favorites
Among the 10 I've tried 5 (Tiger Barb, Gourami, Black Neon tetra, White Cloud Mountain Minnow and Galaxy Rasbora. I would say the toughest would be the Gourami. Though not mentioned the khuli loach in my experience wins overall. On the sidenote the Pearl Gourami is the most non aggressive community fish I've seen.
I agree I have a trio of opaline blues that have been through alot with me, but ny khuli loaches never make it more than a week in my tanks, idk what it is they just dissappear.
The only one of your list I know well, are White Clouds! I love that they seem content with lower temperatures. They are very pretty and eat anything offered, and are indifferent to other fish in the tank. Thanks for the thoughtful evaluation!
This video was packed with great information! I've actually never seen white cloud mountain minnows. The area where I live has a very limited selection of fish, so that was refreshing to see a few familiar ones but also a few that were new to me. Thank you!
Thanks for another great video. I always thought white cloud mountain minnows liked a cooler temperature, so I kept away from keeping them in my community tank . Now I've learnt something new I look forward to keeping them in future.
Another great top ten, Jason! You're always coming up with great top ten lists all the time. I have 3 of those fish in my tanks. Oh hey another NEW IDEA FOR TOP TEN: "Top 10 Fish that will hurt you!" Haha! Just for fun! Fish that will bite, slice, or shock you! At the bottom of the list, for example, would be my Odessa barb fish. Always nipping at my arms when I put my hand in the tank.
Thanks Jason! Got long fin mountain minnows from Flip Aquatics a while ago very pretty and tough! Also have some black neons that are still chugging along after being moved about 4-5 times to different tanks etc.
In the mid 80s I had Zebra danios in a 15 gallon tall. They would swim up the into the HOB filter and spawn in the filter floss and lots of the fry survived with any help from me. They live a very long time.
I bought 8 black neons as I was learning the fine art of tank keeping. I had ONE survive 3 tanks, four runs of Ich, three runs of epistylitis and a run of columnaris... he lived 3 years.
My first and favorite fish black skirt tetras and white skirt tetras. To me they look like small Angel fish kind of. Can get them in glo varieties to get children interested (worked with my daughter). Can’t go wrong. Glad they were on this list. They don’t get enough love imo. ❤
Hi Jason! Thank you for another interesting video. I love the videos of your fish. I have just 4 galaxy rasbora and they are very outgoing. I also have chili rasbora and they do well. The fish I had who lived the longest were two (aggressive bratty) angelfish. 9 and 11 years each. They've been gone for a while, so I turned that tank into a nano fish tank. I do have cory cats, 2 honeys and 2 furcata rainbows in the tank along with the fish I mentioned above. Everyone gets along fine. I love your channel!
I finally broke down and order CPDs from Flip Aquatics. I got 20 of those, 10 rummy nose and 10 XRays. All 40 fish are doing great! The CPDs look so cool in their forest inspired tank a week later.
@@MattStrikea 47g Eheim Open rimless I got for $100 unused locally from another hobbyist. I have it backlit with a Current USA LED kit. I still have some of the finer details to finish, but it does look good for an amateur scaper.
White Cloud Mountain Minnows -- trust me THEY WILL NOT DIE. I've recently had an aquarium tank mishap and had no choice but to keep all my fish in a tiny makeshift plastic container. What was meant to be a temporary stay turned out to be a month-long captivity in a water with ammonialevels off the charts, literally. I lost all two of my roseline barbs, 7 out of 10 Amano shrimps. Oh man, never ungrateful for your videos, my budget wallet on the other hand... 😂 I've been eyeing white clouds, and black tetras every time i check out the fish at the store. Mentioned in a livestream (the comments go so fast though) i felt as I've adulted a bit in the hobby, i have a school of 8 zebra danios, and working on finding more glofish corycats, currently I have five. Wishing i hadn't picked the harder to find and more expensive ones 🙄 Took advantage of the petco sale again before it ended and got more rocks and driftwood. Total went from $75ish down to 31.00! Frugal to the core! Will be setting up a 20 long and the 39G i scooped up as well. ❤always appreciative that i know our waters unless towns are messing with the waters are the same. It's been so helpful with my slow expansion of this hobby. * THOSE GREEN RASBORAS!!! MY HEART. Best color in the world in my humble opinion. * shout out to the beautiful discus...? that was chillin in one of the spotlights WOW just gorgeous.
Jason, What a great list you put out. I don't know if I agree with the kribensis. I bought one and it didn't last a week in my 20 gal. Not sure what happened to him. I do agree with the black skirted tetras those fish are insane hardy. I think the harlequin rasbora is pretty tough. My green severum is a tank though he survived some mistakes I made with my African cichlids. I did get some peacock grudeons in and those two are very pretty and little fish.
Black skirt tetras are one of my favorite fish, love their look and they're super duper hardy, especially compared to other tetras. I definitely have considered trying them once I have a nice big tank for them, but I also thought about tiger barbs because of their gorgeous pattern and bad rep I feel like a lot of these fish are really underrated too, like everyone talks about neons and cardinals but not the black neon, or rams and apistogramma but not kribensis, and in my research I never find white cloud minnows being recommended as beginner-slash-community fish as often as they probably should be
I vote with both my hands for the gouramis. I had a series of disasters prior to a long trip (cats pushed the automatic feeder in the tank), my ad hoc setup was unideal and I came back to a BLACK water tank of carnage. But amongst the corpses ALL THREE of my opaline (blue and red) gouramis were alive and well. They are still alive today and as happy and healthy as ever.
Pangio khulii are great bottom dwellers... tho you really need a bigger group and some floating plants or at least some big leaf plants to cast shadow to the bottom... bright tanks arent their favorite. Overall these loaches are super fun and colorfull and in a big group super curious about stuff if you give them some time and dont have kids banging at the glass all the time..
I had an ammonia spike last month and while most of my fish survived, I’ve lost about a third of my harlequin rasboras since. I get the sense they are a little more sensitive, through they previously seemed more or less indestructible
we sell opaline gouramis at the store and they dont sell that often but in the almost two years ive worked there it one of the few fish i have never scooped a dead one out of the tank
Great list! My list would have wild-type guppies and endlers on it, though I understand why they were on your other list. Also khuli loaches and bristlenose plecos!
Platinum Medaka, blue star endlers, wcmm, dojo loach and peppered corys travel well, last forever, easy to keep and highly decorative with great personalities
Still like my Platies, but after many years of keeping them, a few seem to have a tendency to develop a swim bladder issue. They hardly ever get Ich or any fungal or bacterial infections, at least from my experience. The one thing that puzzles me is sometimes they are super friendly and then out of nowhere, with not one thing changing, they act terrified..lol!
I like platies as an absolute beginner, as they have nice color and variations for a cheap cost. Sadly, my tank got an ick outbreak and one died and the other seems to have it bad. Fingers crossed for recovery
Jack Dempsey cichlids hands down. When I was a teenager my family went to Rhode Island for a week to visit my grandmother. Well there was a power outage and the lady watching our house and feeding my fish didn't know how to get the hob filter restarted. And she kept feeding the fish. Needless to say out of all my fish which were a firemouth, a convict, a cigar fish, a pleco, 4 mbuna, and 2 Jack Dempseys, the Jacks were the only ones that survived that mess. They were tough old fish.
Those red jewel cichlids are stunning! They remind me of the ones I had a long time ago with intense red coloration and the nice blue pearls/spangles. I would love to get some again but I always find them without the reds or without the pearls now a days. If anyone has a lead to some nice ones like in this video, I'd love some again.
@primetimeaquatics you should do a series on fish that breed in certain PH and hardness ranges, i know almost all fish hobbist want to breed fish at least once through their hobby.
I think Siamese algea eaters dont get enough love. They do great cleaning algea and leftover food, also are very peaceful towards other fish. When mine grew they started chasing each other but never saw any aggression towards pther species. Extremely hardy fish.
Hi I have a 15cm ryukin if i leave it in a 10 litre bucket with a heater an airstone for 16hours will it be okay? I will change water every 10hours ish
I had 2 zebra loaches that lived 12 and 13 yrs. They were so funny. Always on the hunt for something! Loved them❤️ definitely a fish I would have again but would choose tank mates better ... snails are not a good choice😞
a great list but i do need a bit of advice here. i just bought a couple of nerite snails and they were alive up until i placed them into my aquarium where they seems to clammed up and withdrawn. i can't tell if they are dead or not or are they just taking some time to adapt to a new surrounding. it has been a few hours but they had not moved a bit since i put them in.
They'll either start moving or the stress was too much for them. I've had some that have been fine, some die, some eventually escape and die but mostly they just hang out and clean
If they're clamped up tight then they're still alive, it's when they hang out limp and lifeless that they're dead From what I've heard nerite snails can be a bit tricky, likely they're just stressed from the move or the water conditions. Nerites tend to be prefer high ph and water hardness, I believe
I'm sorry for the off topic question, but his do I raise aquarium hardness? I'm moving, but the new place has very very soft water. Is there any way to make the water harder?
I was looking at starting a 20gal tank at home and found some fish at my local petco/pet smart and was wondering if I could put them together in the tank, I have watched your 20gal fish video but only a couple of them were covered. They are the Pimelodus pictus (1-2), pterophyllum spp (2-3)., and dwarf gourami (1-3). planning on putting also a hypostomus plecostomus, a mikrogeophagus altispinosus, and a handful of otocinclus in there. Is there an issue among my choices?
@PrimeTimeAquatics Son of a... again, I forgot to factor in that little detail. Giant Gourami are definitely not "common". Please humiliate me, as I richly deserve, and then quickly move along so I can start the healing process. 🤣🤣🤣
I thought 1 was going to be either goldfish or convicts but white clouds make sense also. I don't think I've ever seen a dead one now that I think about it.
New Fish Keeper here. There is SO MUCH conflicting information for fish! I have switched out fish a lot because of aggression. I have 6 Green Tiger barbs now and can't find any more locally. Can I put regular tiger barbs in with them to curve aggression? currently I have 3 Roseline barbs left and some snails. What else can I get?
Hi Jason - I started my first aquarium last month (Mar 12) and after four weeks it looks like the nitrogen cycle has been setup. Water parameters looks good and my pH is around 7.6. My tank is 23g fluval vista, I am envisioning to keep Cherry Barb (6-7) to start with and then add some corycats (5-6) and after some stabilization will add Neon Tetra (10-12). Let me know if my plan looks ok. How to reduce and stabilize my pH? My tap water pH is around 7.8 in Maryland. BTW I got inspired to keep aquarium after watching your beginners series. 😊
Hardy fish that I keep 1. Platy 2. Tiger Barbs 3. White Clouds 4. Glowlight Tetra 5. Skirt Tetra 6. Buenos Aires Tetra 7. Zebra Danio 8. Yoyo Loach 9. Rainbow Shark 10. Clown Plecos 11. Bristlenose Plecos 12. Three Spot Gourami 13. Paradise Fish Stay away from Guppies and Betta Fish for reason I can't keep them alive. 👍👍👍
I am a beginner. I was searching for the reason why my fishes died. i watched your video. I had almost all of them they all died with water change without using water conditioner only platy and betta survived.
The Serpae tetra gets overlooked yet again! Well, sir. This will not stand! 😂😂😂 Travel 9 Parameters 7 Disease 8 Genetics 8 These cheap, common gorgeous fish can put up with a pretty wide variety of parameters. I've never had one die due to genetics or disease, and as far as travel goes, I've never had a DOA, so... 🤷

What a great list you put out. I don't know if I agree with the kribensis. I bought one and it didn't last a week in my 20 gal. Not sure what happened to him. They'll either start moving or the stress was too much for them. I've had some that have been fine, some die, some eventually escape and die but mostly they just hang out and clean
If they're clamped up tight then they're still alive, it's when they hang out limp and lifeless that they're dead
From what I've heard nerite snails can be a bit tricky, likely they're just stressed from the move or the water conditions. Nerites tend to be prefer high ph and water hardness, I believe
Can you please review the Mascara Barb
Pencil tetra are also very hard alongside with zebra danio and giant danio.
Would Kribs be ok in my 55 Gallon with my 10 Cardinal Tetras, 6 Congo Tetras, 5 Otos, 1 Panda Cory and 1 Bristlenose Pleco?
Definitely!
Whenever I go to the pet store I'm drawn to the Black Neon. One of these days...😊
I love them!
I'm sorry for the off topic question, but his do I raise aquarium hardness? I'm moving, but the new place has very very soft water. Is there any way to make the water harder?
Try some Caribsea African Cichlid mix.

I probably wouldn't put the pictus cat, angelfish or that pleco in a 20 gallon. I would only keep one dwarf in a tank. Hope this helps.
I would love to copy the black neon, blue Guarami, kribensis stocking idea. Do you mind Jason?
So cool!
Thanks bud 🤜🏻🤛🏻
What about the Giant Gourami? Same ballpark, or closer to the dwarf?
Might be a little too big to be common? :-)
I think the zebra dino deserves an honourable mention.
Oh and the convict cichlid
The convict is a good one. I can’t keep zebra danios alive. Haha
O', mpt sure they will school together? Melon Barbs, Filament Barbs might work too.
Can you keep more than one variety of tiger barbs together?
Sure!
That will be fun! I probably wouldn't adjust the pH. I have found Black Neons and Green Neons to be more resilient than the standard neon though. :-)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks for the advice!
Need some brilliant green rasboras for my new scape
Loaches for sure. Although my dad has an African clown knife that's almost 20 years old
My 5 Balloon Red Eye Tetras have been with me over 2 years!! They will eat out of my hand or feeding ring.
Zebra/leopard danio's are just invincible!
Convicts are ridiculously hardy fish. They can handle a lot and even breed in most water and with many types of aggressive fish!
Hardy fish that I keep
1. Platy 2. Tiger Barbs 3. White Clouds
4. Glowlight Tetra 5. Skirt Tetra 6. Buenos Aires Tetra 7. Zebra Danio 8. Yoyo Loach
9. Rainbow Shark 10. Clown Plecos
11. Bristlenose Plecos 12. Three Spot Gourami 13. Paradise Fish Stay away from Guppies and Betta Fish for reason I can't keep them alive. 👍👍👍
Kuhli Loaches are super hardy too 💕
Being a platy keeper I was sad they didn't make the list 😢
Giant Danios are super-hardy. Meanwhile, I've had good luck with Bronze Corydoras.
Gold fish and zebra danios
Common pleco if you have a larger tank
I am a beginner. I was searching for the reason why my fishes died. i watched your video. I had almost all of them they all died with water change without using water conditioner only platy and betta survived.
Ya, that could be it if you have chlorine in your tap water.
I was so confused by the title cause the cracks in my screen I thought it said *handy* not *hardy* lmao
I guess they can be handy too 😀
I'd love white clouds, but think my tank is too warm.
The tiger barb live forever if you put them with their one species lol 😂
last year i lost my common pleco. he was 13.
Definitely a hardy fish!
reckon convict cichlids could score a 40
Ya, they probably could 😀
The Serpae tetra gets overlooked yet again! Well, sir. This will not stand! 😂😂😂
Travel 9
Parameters 7
Disease 8
Genetics 8
These cheap, common gorgeous fish can put up with a pretty wide variety of parameters. I've never had one die due to genetics or disease, and as far as travel goes, I've never had a DOA, so... 🤷
I believe that is a good choice as well :-)
Pleco : hold these fish fins
Cpd ain't hardy in my tank at least
My angels take everything my forgetful self can throw at them.
