I can’t believe the gameboy used sytrus.
Lmao
and edison too!
and fl studio 20
I'm thinkinb about a thousand better vst to demonstrate this, not considering the friggin super audio boy

Making game boy chiptune with Sytrus is kinda like killing a cockroach with TNT
It dead as a bich doe
Knowing cockroaches that thing is probably still alive
@@batjaidyn823 Nah man that would be a mosquito. You blow up a building with the mosquito inside and somehow misses
You could nuke a cockroach and still fail to kill it

The Arp also contains a tritone while descending to the last note, tritones almost always come of as eerie
so glad someone else saw it! the tritone was also called "the devil's interval", but i guess you knew it :)
I dont understand nothing what are u talking about
@@afgh1408 Black Sabbath used it a lot.
The devils chord i believe
@@eliagranchi1059 that's actually a myth, composers just took a description of the tritone in a book as literal
now remake this into a happy song
nice one

Thats already a thing in pokemon gold
GeoPlayer123 you would have to change the key which would ruin the originality
Pitch it up and speed it up.
Next video: *I made a trap remix of lavender town*
I was actually hoping the video turned into that :'D
🤣
Actually $uicideboy$ used lavander town melody in their song Ugly which is in a way trap song
i actually make it as my first song ever: clyp.it/gx5dnpgq
listen to Ugly from suicideboys it's a "trap" song wirh the lavendia town sample
Dylan is such a great producer...he's the type of person that would take such any music and explain and break it down in much greater detail giving it more a significant meaning than the original producer intended.
@exodus K I don't. But Dylan is a well rounded producer who knows himself and is probably better than most producers he does these remakes of. If you analyze his videos where he remakes songs or tracks, he provides information and gives insight into different parts of a song that the original producer can't explain since it was most likely an arbitrary decision on their part.
Yeah completely agreed
7:35 "Its the melodic representation of this picture. You look at this picture, its like *EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE*"
you recreated this quite perfectly just to break it down for us.
The piano version sounds beautiful
Lavender town is probably one of the best songs on the Gameboy, it's so incredibly creepy.
Retro Plus the Original lavender town theme is even more creepy
@@nsl_black8053 not much tbh
There's a creepier song, Godzilla King of Monsters, Gidorah Theme
It's just a vibe how's it creepy
You absolute madlad.
What would we do without you, Dylan??
The question that comes to mind after all this then, is how did those complex waveforms even get generated on a Gameboy with the sound chip choices you described?
It's either the PCM, or there's some specific modulation going on in that channel.
@@nitroanilinmusic The DPCM channel cannot loop samples like that and modulation is non existent. The thing is that he only explained how the NES soundchip works, however the GameBoy soundchip differs from the NES one as it gets rid of the DPCM and triangle channel in favor of a wavetable channel which allows the composer to basically draw in a simple waveshape to use as a synth. There's a few other soundchip quirks he didn't explain or got wrong so I wouldn't fully take his word on how these soundchips work lol
Mitchell dead Pokémon haunted the sound chip.
Here is the disassembly of lavender town theme: github.com/pret/pokered/blob/master/audio/music/lavender.asm
It uses a command to specify the tones for channels.
Here: github.com/pret/pokered/blob/master/audio/wave_instruments.asm#L6
is a line which notes the exclusive use of a waveform for lavender town and pokemon tower themes, so it is propably just a wavetable.
Luck must of all
I used to turn off the sound when I went to lavender town 😂
Look up Lavender Town Funk, you won't fear it anymore.
“Uh oh, stinky”
Oblitorix honestly I get nightmares of the Uh oh, stinky version.
@@OctoomyYTOfficial me too. Well, not nightmares, just.. scares me
Great video. FYI at 0:48, the Game Boy does not have a dedicated triangle or DCPM channel. You are confusing it with the NES's 2A03. The Game Boy actually uses a wavetable channel.

Thanks for all the videos lately, really drowns out the noise of my parents fighting
this opened up a portal of repressed memories in my brain
This is actually a great look into sound design
I remember the sound from the first versions, my ears hurt :')
This is so cool! Please do more of these
This dude can literally recreate any video game soundtracks. Glad I subbed awhile ago.

I keep watching the video but I can see about what moment you are talking of
The piano version sounds surprisingly beautiful.
Sad, but not necessarily creepy.
The sound design really adds a lot to the creepiness.
yeah. in essence its a sad song, but made creepy with a bunch of wonky sound design

Dude this was SO educational. Thank you
Dropping straight knowledge in this video 😤😤 dope 🔥
You really are the Fl studio god... These techniques are soo creative and helpful!

Dude awesome idea. Do more stuff like this !
Amazing video one again ! :)
Thanks. I love your videos on game music!!
Really enjoyed how you explained it all!
Awesome work. Had to leave a like so I can sleep tonight.
The piano version could be a Radiohead song
Good job dude, what a remake.
Your sound design was crazy spot on
Big Seth Everman vibes from your sense of humor and video style. And so, you have a new subscriber.
6:43 made me think of the "brrr brrr hello moto" sound. In fact, I'm pretty sure that sound was made in Sytrus
6:54 how the landline starts acting when you don't answer
Brah u deadass scared the shit out of me wit that noise u put in the beginning
This is so interesting, thank you. 🥺
Every time the music starts after the dit dit dit part I get goosebumps
wow, using the techniques you shared with us, I managed to recreate the "original" fanmade edition of lavender town's theme! thanks man
really cool video glad i came across this
Dear lord, that explains so much! And now I even know how to recreate it! Tried it a while back but failed miserably due to using a gameboy soundfont and just being generally inexperienced at the time lol
Great video! I learned a lot from it!
This was a masterclass in sound design
You're a music genius, I Love u

Dude after seeing this I have to make some pokemon piano beats, sounds so nostalgic and just straight up cool.
You're a great teacher. Thanks for breaking it down.
i dont watch this channel but oddly when i was at work the other day Lavender Town start playing in my head.
You taught me something I didn't even know about FL Studio and I have been using it since its release. Off to Fruity Loops I go!!!
6:57 telephone lmao
I was expecting a telephone picture to pop up :/
Very informative, thank you for explaining everything you did instead of just “then I remade that sound”. 🧖♂️
This is some of the best narrated DAW theory I've ever seen.
Amazing video
Yes, this looks like a good video to watch right before going to bed.
I loved this musical analysis, it was very informative and very fun to watch!
I didn't have the Gameboy growing up, so I didn't play Pokemon; I listened to Lavender Town for the first time as a grown man, and it still creeped me out, haha. They did a great job with the music.
6:53 thank you for teaching us how to make a telephone ring
I actually learned so much sound design from this.
i learned a ton in 20 secinds. Plus i have a chipshop pack and wondered how the waveforms look the way they do.
Amazing Tutorial
C# doesn't feel natural, and it sounds accidental, I C what you did there
Bitch, the door.
Awesome use of Edison, Sytrus, and spectral view. Thanks.
Fun fact,if you know DDLC...
Try to listen at the choir part(in sayo-Nara)after lavander town
Im not sure if its the same one semitone arp pattern, but it definetly has the same vibe. Hits harder then lavender town honestly

I clicked the description and shat my pants
You and Retro Game Mechanics Explained should for sure have teamed up on this. He figures out the parameters used to drive the chip, and you recreate them in the DAW.
That weird vibrato sound always makes me think of those Halloween decorations that dance and play spooky music. They always use that exact sound.
that description spooked me
You should do more of these
But did you also include the ghost in the spectogram??!?!?!??!
This Gengar Type Beat is on spot bro 👀
Dylan you are goddamn underrated
Can we have a video where you do a track in the same style of Ryuichi Sakamoto? Especially from the Async album😊
Pretty cool vid and interesting depth to the analysis of the song!
If you're interested in recreating songs more accurately, you could try some VSTs called NES VST or maybe chipsounds, they're pretty good.
6:43 Hello?
This brings back bad memories
Omg hes wearing a Daft Punk shirt 😳 I fucking love you Dylan
Saw you at Melkweg in the line for Madeon sadly enough I couldn't find you later. VoeltSlechtMan. Nice video nonetheless!
dope, hope u enjoyed the show :)
Dutch ?
i love the showcase of ryuichi sakamoto's async in this video !!
If you want to learn FL Studio at the same time as music theory, and at the same time you want to eventually master Sytrus, this is a good video to watch. It would have been nice to have for me back in the day. Bravo. A little of everything.
Dylan a legend I Stan
This is really cool, however there are several inaccuracies, mainly with the intro pulse. I think you'd be better off using FamiTracker or something similar for full accuracy.
I don't know how the publishers even let this pass.
beautiful
For the guys who are too lazy to sound design, there's a nice plugin called Magical 8bit plugin, it's free !
ツX3LL3N also there’s tbh peach with all the presets for free I think haha

Do you know how's the most similar way to do this on Ableton? I've tried 'Wavetable' as a substitute of 'Sytrus', but it's not the same.
Thanks buddy, subscribed.
Did you already do one of these for the song of unhealing from the legend of Zelda Majora's mask?
I always felt like that song had a similar vibe to this one
