The patch is included in Arturia's DX7 soft synth, the patch is called Dire Dreams.
Nice coincidence
@@woodman2855 coincidence?
Coincidence I think not!
True
i just checked the arturia patch, it sounds good but not exactly like the original.
8:35 Instant Boiler Room banger

Are there any good songs with a similar chord progression?

Most relaxing song, that big scary ass worm wasn’t relaxing at all
Dimension that big ass worm was pretty familiar to me it reminded me of my massive donger so that was actually nice.
LMAO FR
3 name changes allowed every 90 days. Learn more hahahaha
i have nightmares about that thing
It's obviously a moray eel and not a worm but okay...
I remember playing a tf2 server with a map that had this as a background, the map went on forever. I formed almost a friend circle for the duration of my play time on there. I never spoke to those people again after that.
TheParadox1010 sounds like a lovely memory
Koji was inspired by a lot of rock, prog and jazz music of the 70s and 80s; that why he made good music :D
Bro got that Yamaha shit goin on i love it
People actually found out that it was sampled from the roland JD 990! It's the FM electric piano, I believe, and apparently the preset was the I-63 Crystal Rhodes 1.
I don't exactly know much about synths or how they work, so I hope I listed the right info. I was just reading off the spreadsheet people put together :P
3:07
I actually cried laughing
Wtf is wrong with my humor
Alpatex Robot Rock by Daft Punk
It's the fuckin distorted robot rock that killed me...
same, I almost died from laughter xD
same, that's fucking comedy gold right there
That’s meme culture right there
3:04 i did not breath heavily through my nose, i actually laughed out loud.
4:00 The string sample is actually from a Roland SC-88...
yeah, I'm a sample nerd. :P
Tails19935 nintendo uses so much sc-88 it’s one of my favorites
Yeah. In that era that was one of the go tos for videogame music. Ff7 also used one of those Roland synths
They also used alot of JV-1080 sounds, the nylon string guitar was used in the OoT Gerudo Valley track and was also used by Capcom in the original Ace Attorney trilogy.
@@NLind Yeah, HCS forums is the best place to get information about samples used in video games.

"haha decending major chords go brrr"
Is the mixolydian mode
@@Psyhramia It's not, as G Mixolydian doesn't have an Eb.
That's really just the name of it
In fact to main instrument of DDD is Crystal Rhodes from Roland JD-990 with specific configuration. In this case, you'll need the original one to make sample replica.
Piranha plant lullaby: "Observe"
The fact that the original sound can be found on an Korg I4s is quite amazing since I got one from my uncle
I discovered it was the actual sound from Dire, Dire Docks after I tried playing it myself on the Korg I4s
I love the 90’s Synth sounds.
Also they probably used a Korg 01R/W for the piano.
Windows XP shutdown be like 10:10
Great video. Love how you both go over both the technical aspect of the track with the presets and sound design and also the music theory
Insane amount of knowledge and effort goes into these videos, keep up the good work man!
it's so nice that you left the project file for use, thank u so much (:
I really enjoyed the breakdown of the composition! Great work.

I can't believe I came across this channel, I've fallen in love with your content. Keep doing what you're doing
so funny the timing of this, I JUST started taking a music theory class and I was actually able to follow along in this video and I probably wouldn't be able to before the class. very well done!
So about the Dire Dire Docks sample, it actually seems as if it’s two patches mixed together from two separate 90s pieces of hardware. I know that it actually uses an E. Piano from the Roland Sound Canvas and some other piece of hardware that we don’t know yet. I also believe that the strings are from an old Roland CD we’ve been looking for but yet have not found.
Lovin these vids, really cool to hear all the informations about the style
I have a love hate relationship with this song. I love the song, hate the level...
Dire Dire Docks is like a demo level for demonstrating how shit movement was on the N64 compared to most modern games in terms of swimming physics and their intuitiveness. I mean Sunshine isn't much better, and the N64 wasn't bad especially when you consider it was over 20 years ago, but we've come a long way
@@CoreLocus lmao true, it's also a good demo of making me anxious because of the deep water
I liked DDD and JRB.
Super Mario 64DS was better it was my childhood basically
wouldn't it be cool if he did this type of video with donkey kongs intro music?
This is an amazing video, I learned so many new things about music theory from just this
I’m partial to the File Select theme myself, goosebumps every time
Interesting stuff! This song is so relaxing and beautiful. Thank you for making this video ✨✨
Awesome analysis. Just one tiny inaccuracy. During the at the beginning of the B section (ex. 5:40), where your chords go “C, Bm, Am, G” that Bm should actually be a G/B (“G over B,” or a G chord but with a B note in the bass)
The F# note in your Bm chord should be G. If you listen to that bit in the original song, you’ll see what I mean. It’s a subtle difference, but the G/B keeps the tonality feeling major and resolved, while providing that nice C, B, A, G descending bassline that grounds that section together.
Everything else was absolutely spot on though! Never even noticed the double 16th note kicks when the drums come in, but sure enough, they’re there in the original. Also apparently my Yamaha keyboard has this exact sound. Lol who knew. Thanks for your awesome work, dude. Keep it up!
Thank you! I'm so jealous, I could listen to that sound all day haha
So I keep seeing people saying it's the original sample was from a JD 990. And although it very well could be, bare in mind that a lot of it's presets originally came from the JD-800 released in 1991. Meaning that it very well could be sampled from either. The JD-800's "crystal rhodes" preset was very popular during the 90s and if you listen to demos of people playing it, it sounds almost identical to the dire, dire docks piano minus the compression and bit crushing obviously to save on file size.
man, your analysis are so brilliant 💯
guys! i think i found the synth they used! i believe it's the Korg DW-8000 from 1985. You can select multiple Waveforms, and one of them sounds spot on to the sound we hear in Dire Dire Docks.
JD990 Crystal Rhodes, but it's 2 tracks. One has chorus.
Thank you! Awesome video
BACK AT IT AGAIN WITH ANOTHER MASTERPIECE
Can you make a lot more of these videos? They are very informative.
this is amazing im loving this series!

At 7:48 Koji Kondo also does this with "Great Bay Coast" theme from "Majora's Mask"

Bro your video is wonderful 😂 i was skeptical at first when i clicked on it but it’s really great👊
I didn't really understand what you were talking about, yet I'm still fascinated.
I'm so glad I can play this on my synth that has a sound close to the OG
I really like how you did this.
I will always love this song, it's so calm
Thanks a lot, your videos are great.
These videos are so funny for some reason. I love this guy
So very interesting Dylan I loved it
The e piano in the beta version is from the Samplecell default library. The final one is either a modified JD-990 e piano patch or from the E-MU Morpheus/UltraProteus
This takes me back to my childhood!
Nice video! The explanation of the whole origin of the sample and the sound was very interesting! I know it's a pretty old video, but I wanted to correct a wrong chord:
11:11 the 2nd chord of the progression isn't a B minor, the notes there are actually (from the bottom) B, D, B, which is most likely a G major chord in the first inversion (and without the root), it also fits much better if you try playing it, the B minor there feels a bit weird 😅 even though when played it back together it sounded great! But yeah, little mistake, but the rest was good!
"The B goes down to an A#."
Lol. R.i.P music theory.
What do you mean rip music theory? Like half steps aren’t a thing in music theory??
Evan Five I think Daymusik was referring to the fact that he said “A#” when he should say “Ab” because it’s a half step down
Plhector assuming that the b was correct
The note below IS A# then a then Ab
One semitone above B is obviously C so I have no idea as well
If I’m wrong I’m questioning my sanity
First NAMe Last name oh my goodness I meant to say Bb not Ab
Plhector
Does that even matter in the long run?
Is the “A# key” is completely different to the “Bb key”?mean it’s the same note or just based on it? Please Daymusik, confirm
(RUclips please let me send this comment, stop saying the request timed out I literally just opened you up)
Wow, this video is really interresting, really nice!
Have you heard of the game 'maplestory' It's one of my childhood games, That would be really great to see an how one of their songs was made for example ellinia bgm :)
Yess slime tree music (“missing you”), or sleepywood theme
Please make this real!

@@murkish hey!
When he did that piano conversation, MapleStory came to mind.
that moment when he teaches something you already know but still find it new.
My Yamaha Clavinova PF P-100 basically has the identical sound that Koji used. Not sure if he used that particular piano, but the sound surely is very very similar.
I remember that if you use Garageband and go to light bulbs then press on keys, that would create a sound that is similar to the instrument being used in Dire Dire Docks
You are a Legend
The opposite of click bait. Way more informative than I could have imagined
Used to fire up the N64 on my CRT, jump into the misleadingly spooky pirate ship painting and just listen to that song, realizing way too soon that I won't be a child forever.
On the bright side, I learned I can still enjoy video games, albeit less often with a fulltime job, but my daughter loves super mario odyssey all the way to classic games on the Switch virtual console.
Thanks Daddylan, this was a great post
The shapes the melody was making are sorta awesome
I downloaded a sm64 soundfont and tested it out on a midi and the intrument used in dire dire docks is the glockenspiel
The Crystal Rhodes samples were from the Roland JD-800/JD-990 (rack variant). I have the JD-800 VST and I love it very much.
You make my day
Such an awesome song and video
2:34 omg that keyboard on the bottom is the exact one I have
Alot of Nintendo games from the SNES to GameCube use some samples from Roland sound modules such as the sc-55, sc-88pro and the Sd-90, for example the gba pokemon games used roland sc-88 pro samples
Those F#s at 5:41 are killing me lol
I have never seen a video recommendation so specific to my interests, thank you RUclips
Good job Koji Kondo (the guy who worked on most Mario and Zelda OSTs since 1985)
did you know it ? we can hear this very peculiar synth in Cece Peniston - Forever In My Heart
Dire Dire Docks / Jolly Roger Bay is my favorite Super Mario song off all time. Its so relaxing
5:41 its not E,G,B its B,G,B in the original version.
So many people in the comments saying it's a sound canvas or dx7 used for the original; it was a Roland JD800.
It sounds beautiful!
Piranha plant's lullaby is more relaxing
THANKS DYLAN
Just a small correction, but at 9:17 that would be a B flat, not an A sharp. It’s an E flat major chord, so its fifth has to be flat as well.
Aside from that, loved the analysis here! Most videos like this don’t go this deep into the theory behind things, was pleasantly surprised by how far you broke things down.
I feel like that 2nd note of the 2nd chord in the C section is wrong. In the "Bass Line"
Patrick Kossila it is wrong. It should be a first inversion of the I chord. He saw that the bass note was “b” and assumed it was the iii chord.
Its called jazz man
yeah, it's meant to be a g/b chord and he went for a b minor chord, hence why the f# note feels so out of place
Patrick Kossila 5:41 instead of E,G,B it’s B,G,B
Dylan! You da chief. I love this video
I really like "music theory" parts in your videos.
i lov ur videos dude
Such a great tune
This song, in my childhood, made me feel like if i was the only human on the earth. you want to know which is my worst nightmare?
Not gonna lie if this video wasn't about Did Dire Docks I would've gone apeshit.
