    Great comparison! I've been rocking my vive for a little over a year now. I have an itch to pick up the rift after this price drop, and I think I will after seeing your review.
    half for development and half for the fact that I don't need to use Revive for oculus exclusives.

      Thank you very much! I'm glad people are starting to look at VR systems more objectively now too (with regards to you potentially owning both). If you pay attention to the respective Vive and Rift communities, there's a fair amount of friction between the two, but in reality they both have their pros and cons. Also, forward movement in VR technology is good for VR in general. The Vive's superior tracking pushes Oculus to work on their tech while the Rift's polish focused HTC's efforts in making their HMD lighter. Awesome stuff all around!

    • @OULIED2
      @OULIED2 7 лет назад +8

      I agree 100 percent!
      In fact, I just ordered my rift today, and am really trying to make sure that people know that it isn't a console war. VR should have a sense of unity within the community, and the people fanboying one HMD or the other is not doing anyone any good.

    • @rustcohle3803
      @rustcohle3803 7 лет назад +1

      i agree man, vr is a small niche as it is. stop fan boying and dissing other hmds, you're not helping vr to grow any further. star trek vr is great since it unites users from all platforms to work together for 1 goal.

    • @DylanHongTech
      @DylanHongTech  7 лет назад +3

      Just because you don't lose tracking doesn't mean it is as good as the Vive's. There are other metrics to compare the two tracking systems. For example, the Vive has a quicker refresh rate for tracking information. Additionally, the Vive headset uses the lighthouses to position itself in a space (similarly to gps) while the Oculus Rift uses the sensor data to calculate the head mounted display's location from a more outside-in approach. There are some fantastic scientific articles comparing the technology between the two that are super interesting to read!

      I worked on the vive for a couple months and just got my own rift.
      I immediately thought the god rays (color bleeding when on dark backgrounds) were worse on the rift. Imo, the rift is more comfortable; less hot and lighter.

      The ideal set up is 3 or 4 sensors, 7ft high surrounding you in a square. Oculus software is optimized for this setup

    I have two sensors on the ceiling, fairly wide apart and pointing towards the centre. One time I pulled out my 3rd centre and forgot to put it back in, and never really noticed, even though I was turning around with touch. =) So tracking can be good with two, it depends how it's set up. Although I'm glad I got the 3rd sensor as this ensure a pretty flawless roomscale experience.
    Good review :)

    Why do you spend so much time harping on the front-facing sensor setup? You can set it up for 360 tracking with 2 sensors, or roomscale with 3 sensors.

    • @DylanHongTech
      @DylanHongTech  7 лет назад +18

      Mostly because I see this as the one major disadvantage when compared with the Vive. 2 sensor 360 tracking from my testing is still not as flawless as the Vive's lighthouse tracking system. So when thinking about if the Oculus is worth it, I had to think about reasons it might not be. But in the end, the increase in tracking doesn't justify the exorbitant price of the Vive in my opinion. And at $400 the Oculus is absolutely worth it even when accounting for the things it doesn't do as well. I just want people to have a full understanding of what they're potentially putting their money into

    I picked up the Rift for $400 and for the price I'm actually very impressed with what you get. I completely agree with the consumer-facing polish, the packaging is insane, and I appreciate that the box doubles as a ROBUST storage case, instead of just chucking the packaging in the trash. Good on you, Oculus. It looks like the price of the Sensors have gone down, too. They're $50 now. Combine that with a couple dollar USB extension cable from monoprice and you can put it where you want.
    I might try out the experimental 2-sensor 360 degree sensor placement Oculus mentions, where you can place the sensors at two opposite corners to cover the area just like the Vive does.
    Good video, btw, upper tier quality review, excellent info, no time wasting unnecessary talking.

      +Matt Laskowski I'm glad you liked the video! I'm pretty heavily considering picking up a third sensor too. I'm currently rocking the experimental 2 sensor 360 degrees setup. I 3D printed some mounts so they're up on my walls which is cool. It works well but it's definitely not perfect

    The Vive tracking has great tracking, but if set up correctly the Rifts sensors are no slouch either to be honest. It comes down to your placement of the sensors. The way you have your sensors arranged are not giving you the optimal experience. If you have one behind you and one in front it really helps with occlusion. With three cameras it's absolutely just about on par with Vive. It took a bunch of updates blood sweat and tears waiting for it but now it's finally the full package it always should've been. Plus the exclusives are on point.

  • @hellschatt
    @hellschatt 7 лет назад +2

    Huh, never noticed 5:35. I do sometimes see the pixels though. The real reason why the Oculus is so immersive imo is because of the oculus controllers. The headmount alone is nice and good but nothing too spectacular. But the god damn brilliant controllers make it. Grabbing feels so intuitive and like real.
    And the controllers can track the position of your thumb and forefinger (and your other 3 fingers as one basically). That blew my mind the most. Like you can do a fist while pointing with your index finger and your character in the game will do the same. Or you can do a thumbs up with your fist closed.
    With the 3rd sensor the tracking works perfectly fine for me (after I covered the big mirror behind me lol). I can turn all I want without losing track.

    • @DylanHongTech

      Yeah the controllers are absolutely phenomenal. The grip triggers are incredible and the ergonomics of the physical design are nearly perfect. While I like the Vive's trackpad on their controllers, the Rift's touch controllers are easily my pick

    Guys quick tip I didn't notice in this video. You can use a 360 degree 2 sensor setup it's near perfect for me i just put them in opposite corners on the ceiling. 3 Sensors isn't required for 360.

    • @DylanHongTech
      @DylanHongTech  7 лет назад +1

      Keep in mind that this is still considered an experimental feature by Oculus. From my experience this does allow for decent 360 tracking if you're able to get the sensors high enough, but this still isn't as flawless as the Vive's tracking out of the box. Hopefully Oculus software updates will get the rift to the point where the 2 sensors is as good as the Vive's!

    At the time of this review the Vive was $800 but it's now only $600. Another thing I didn't see mentioned is Vive has trackers that allow you to bring your feet into VR. I think these were demonstrated but not available when this video came out. While not cheap, the Rift has no such trackers to do this and with their tracking technology my guess is it wouldn't track very well anyway. There are several production studios that use the Vive controllers, trackers and HMD's to do full body motion capture and with a little bit of inverse kinematics can get lifelike realistic results. I'm not busting on the Rift, it's a great piece of tech at a fantastic price, just be aware if you plan on developing that the Vive offers a few options that the Rift doesn't.

    I have both. No, The Vive is easier to set up than the Rift. The key to the light houses is to have them on tripods. better cable management, the Rift with 3 cameras is a nightmare. Tats said the Rift is pretty cool

    360 Tracking is possible w/ only 2 sensors if you place them high and far enough away. Help your viewers do that instead of telling them to buy a 3rd.

    • @DylanHongTech
      @DylanHongTech  7 лет назад

      The 2 sensor setup is still experimental and far from perfect. Buying a third is the method that the general user base has concluded as the best option. I've been experimenting with the 2 sensor 360 setup, and while it is good, it's not as good as the Vive's tracking

    Great review! The only thing I think is inaccurate is how you said you'll need to buy new games constantly. You don't need to pay for a ton of games for VR, as a huge amount are free, and there are lots of creative ones that don't really have an end. Since VR is largely still kind of an experiment, many developers call their VR games "experiences" and leave them free on Steam, and as you said, Oculus has SteamVR support. You'll find a ton of games if you use the tags "free" and "VR" on steam.

  • @ssimset

    Build-in earphones is important. With them you have ability to put headset like a cap. 2 sensors diagonal setup now is better than before and for me is enough to not buy third. Also free full polished games is awesome. If you need glasses, recommending to buy vr prescription lenses. And for more comfort buy VR Cover. Those two (without glasses one) things are more important than a third sensor.

    I just got my Rift and it's freeaking amazing!!! Also, I got mine at the $399 price, but it didn't come with the Xbox controller and it came in one big box, instead of two small ones.
    It's pretty crazy to think that this is cheaper than the PS VR. I've played the PS VR and it doesn't come close to this!

    Buying another touch setup seems much more efficient than buying a single sensor because you get the sensor and touch controls for $100 vs $60 for the sensor alone.

      Very good point! I was considering doing that too, but I'm not sure if I'd ever need another set of touch controllers. The $60 sensor also comes with a long usb extension cable

    You need to get a third sensor to guarantee 360 view by the system. The third sensor is $59 USD and it will remove the issue you are talking about. I have 3 sensors and it is flawless no matter which direction I face.
    I know you mention it but the difference is night and day. 360 without worries for 60 bucks

    I've never heard anyone say that SteamVR was a better platform than Oculus Home. Also, Oculus Home supports 3rd party games now, so your SteamVR games show up in your library. Pretty awesome stuff.

    • @DylanHongTech

      SteamVR benefits from a larger library of games and a store that people are already familiar with. The actual software experiences are very similar though

    I would prefer the oculus go for $200 once it comes out until the main PC HMD's get wireless and higher density screens by default. VR Arcades however should start up now! Hopefully my injury goes away and I can take advantage of them but even if I can't, It'll still be cool for it to be a thing.

    GTX 770 SLI with 5GHz 2600k i-7 runs just fine for most games. Robo Recall works ok until you get into the city and then it slows too much. Also you will have the annoying warning on the home page that your system doesn't meet the rift specs.

    My review. I have used a htc vive, windows mixed reality, and oculus rift. First of don’t buy the mixed reality it WILL fail you. The oculus has better controllers . But the vive is Better for tracking. But I just don’t feel it in vive it’s not what you should want in vr overall I would say go with the rift.

  • @kezako6783

    I don't quite agree with you on the roomscale statement : I have an oculus, I am able to do 360° roomscale on all my freespace ( little more than 2,5X2m ). I use a 3rd camera, but I hear 2 camera face to face work quite well. The main difference with vive is the ease of setting : you place your lighthouses and entire room is tracked, regardless the furniture configuration. I had to optimize the setting of my cameras to track the same area. Ok I spent 15m on it. But at the end, the result is just the same.
    Otherwise, good video.

    • @DylanHongTech
      @DylanHongTech  7 лет назад

      My thoughts on tracking are pretty much that the Vive's tracking technology is noticeably superior out of the box. The Oculus workarounds with 2 sensor 360 tracking and 3 sensor tracking are decent ways to get 360, but it's not quite as refined of a setup as the Vive. Glad you enjoyed the video overall!

    I bought the Oculus a month ago, after a lot of trying I will be going back to my Dell MR headset. The picture is about the same, the Dell is easier to use and is far more comfortable to use, the Oculus picture is distorted like looking thru thick glasses, I have yet to play a game for more than one minute before it goes back to its home page, and where do I go from there? I think that the product is not ready for the public. I wonder if I can get a refund from Best Buy.

I have been waiting for VR ever since I saw the Lawnmower Man movie for the first time back in the early 90's. :)
