- This time I think I can't really write a video description. There are no words, which could describe this live performance. I was barely able to figure out what happened within this musical masterpiece and at the same time I saw the crowd was having the same issue. My brain might explode if I listen to more music from Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

NFAK was the first qawal who aligned qawali with modern music n incorporated western electronic music in his singing. With this merger, he created some most beautiful songs n brought out traditional qawali n singing to mainstream modern style. Rahat Fateh Ali, being his nephew, student, part of his crew, n heir follow the same style n perform such music. All these qawalis were originally sung by NFAK, Rahat just singing them again. 💚

I felt the EXACT same way as you did towards the crowd when I first saw this recording of this. But imagine - you've never been exposed to any classical Indian/Pakistani music with all its microtonality, intricate rhythmicality, or fluid tempo. I think if you're in that position you're just in shock, because every "classical" concert you've ever been to emphasizes being "proper" and sitting still while not disturbing the artists (aka Western classical music).
I know you listened to Rang by Ustad Rahatji and Amjad Sabri - it's a Coke Studio production. It's a phenomenal display of two literal families of music coming together after decades. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (Rahatji's uncle) and Ghulam Farid Sabri (Amjadji's father) sang that exact same song 40 years prior, and the two families with their differing musical philosophies had never sung together in public before or ever since - until RFAK and Amjadji got together to record this version. Sadly, Amjadji was assassinated by the Taliban shortly after he recorded the song and never got to see the finished product. Even more of a miracle, the recorded version was supposed to just be a dress rehearsal to make sure the lights, mics, syncing, and all the other tech was working properly. But the director realized the spark was there and decided to record everything anyways right then and there. So aside from the lyrics and the base melody, everything you see in the video is completely improvised. Every time I listen to it, I cry. It's one of the most beautiful duets ever recorded. Period.

About the harmonium, and sitting down while singing qawalli. These are standard, because the qawalli singers use the arm movements to control the sudden tone and pitch variations during singing by applying and releasing pressure to vocal chords through body muscle pressure, kinda like using a flexible flute or bagpipe. And sitting down reduces the tension on the vocal chord, allowing it to be easily manupulated. So using the hands during singing comes naturally to them, and they can and usually do use harmonium in parts where there are no sharp changes or switches needed.
