Another epic from the legendary Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is coming to the channel. For this video I had help regarding the lyrics and the content of the song. Lyrically it told the story about intoxicated love, dependence and suing the opposing part, while holding a hint about a religious connection. Moreover NFAK controlling the whole performance of course and singing awesome together with the quire. This qawwal held a long Intro and was a shortened version from the original song. We can just be grateful to be able to witness his doings still today. More of his music should come to the channel more frequently.

Mast means ecstatic. When you are intoxicated with alcohol and feel high that's also mast. But mast is the more calm and ecstatic state where you feel joyful. But they are here talking about the intoxication brought about the love and in this case love of God!
Let me tell you Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Qawalis are based on mystical Sufi poetry. If you are aware of sufism , there is a large collection of Poetry by poets like Rumi, Hafiz , Amir Khusru etc. They are largely in Persian and Urdu is directly related to Arabic and Persian. So they incorporate concepts and phrases from Persian.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Qawalis are largely based on these Sufi poems. Sufis talk about love of God and Devine and often use the terms like , sharab (alcohal), mast(drunk), May Khana(bar) intoxication , saqi(cup-bearer) as metaphor.
The ' Sharab' ( alcohol) here is metaphor for Devin love.
So you don't have to take the words literally here.
This whole song is purely based on Sufi love for God and search for God!
Qawalis are noting but message of sufism communicated through musical instruments.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a mystic by nature and essentially a Sufi. Although as a music genius he achieved success across all the disciplines and traditions of music which also include western pop music. His experiments in fusion between Eastern and Western music yielded huge success and he became famous all over the world.
But to me the core of his true work would be Qawalis which are based on sufism.
You may search sufism on Google to get an idea about it if you already don't.
Ps: when you hear the word ' mast ' in many places in different songs it's because the same term is being used since the message is same everywhere about the Love of divine.
    Di-vine or ' The wine ' ?

I think these terms related to being drunk are interesting in the Sufi context. I should bear that in mind when they come back in another poetry.

'Maast' is a Persian word meaning that oneself is just confined in himself without any care of whatever is going on around him. Self indulgence.
Urdu is a language which comprises of Hindi, Persian, Turkish, Arabic, Punjabi, Laari, Kachi, Choli, Pashto words, so it can be easily said that all these languages make up Urdu. Which is now the national language of Pakistan and English is the second language of Pakistan.

You see Islam has two sides, one exoteric which is based on rituals and following the basic rules of the religion. the other is esoteric, the more mystic inner core which is achieved through personal work and growth following a specific method. This is sufism. This is the side he's taking about here. It's to have a mystical experience with the love of devine.

No Cojak this is not at all a religious qawwali.... it's got nothing to do with Allah.
Rather he has used some verses of this poetry where Muslims can object on this song. In this qawwali he has said that, he doesn't know how to pray and perform ablution which are must for a Muslim, rather He said that I will bow in front of his beloved! which is absolutely prohibited in Islam to bow before anyone except the Almighty Allah. So rest assured that there's not even a single dot of being religious. This is just another masterpiece of a song. No religion involved at all.
