    "did u maintain the right pitch"... I dont even know if what I sounded like was close to what the piano sounded like...

    • @Michael-hj9fx
      @Michael-hj9fx 5 лет назад +63

      Yeah this is the problem I am having as well... I can't tell if the pitch I sang was the same as the one on the piano, or how far off it was.

    • @abcrx32j
      @abcrx32j 5 лет назад +37

      Try with a pitch monitor app

    • @kater4513
      @kater4513 5 лет назад +15

      Google "szynalski tone generator", it generates a purer sound than piano. You certainly will be able to hear if you're in tune.

    • @Michael-hj9fx
      @Michael-hj9fx 5 лет назад +14

      I've tried tone generators, but it doesn't help. I suspect the problem is the difference in timbre. Pitch monitoring apps seem to be helping though.

    • @kater4513
      @kater4513 5 лет назад +12

      @@Michael-hj9fx I can't see your answer anymore but I'll reply anyway
      Try one of the following:
      1. If you for example set the tone generator to C3, try C2 and C4 instead.
      2. While attempting to match the generated tone, try slightly going up and down with your voice's pitch while holding the note. Kind of like a police siren or so. You should feel if you're in tune or not.

      Get a guitar tuner with a digital display. Take a deep breath. Sustain a vocal sound and it will display the note and whether it’s flat or sharp. Don’t worry about the note. Do this exercise one note at a time and you will develop musical muscle memory and have a ton of laughs in the process. Thank me later.

    I'll never understand why I can hum songs perfectly but once I open my mouth to project it, I lose pitch and just generally suck. I also find it easier to sing instrumental parts vs. actual lyrics or voices.

    • @rickelvi
      @rickelvi 3 года назад +19

      When you hum you don't have to worry about vowel placement, projection or anything like that, so it's usually easier. Same reason for the instrumental parts, you don't have to worry about the idiosincrasies of speech and can focus only on the pitch.

      To be fair most people who think they’re tone deaf aren’t! I thought I was for a while because I don’t know how to sing on pitch but I play other instruments and can actually hear just fine. I can hear when I’m singing wrongly and if you can hear it too then you’re not tone deaf, you just don’t know how to control your voice properly!

    • @MR-vl8bd
      @MR-vl8bd 3 года назад +8

      @@Anna-cu7iz I agree. When effort is put and the proper technique is applied almost anyone can carry some sort of tune, even if it's just for congregational purposes. Very few people are actually tone deaf. I think most who say they are just compare themselves to actual singers.

  • @maxkaddell

    My uncle used to say my songs were pitchy, and I really had no clue. Spent 11 months, practically tone deaf, other than these videos I train myself... then about 3 weeks ago, I srarted to hear it and learned voice placement by discovery. I also found some extremely helpful tips in an article which is to sit or stand straight, chin tilted down for my middle/low voice, raise my eyebrows for high notes, temporarily flex the chest at the exact moment I need to sing a powerful note. It dramatically decreased the difficulty of singing. My better sung songs on smule went from an average of about 25 likes to 200 likes.
    I think the most important things. for newer singers to do is practice alot, and experiment with sounds, volume, techniques, because... you know, chasing cars and enter sandman are sung differently. Vowel sounds are especially important, so one knows how to use vowels at different pitches... like could be singing high notes and get a word like eyes that makes your voice want to sing lower. So focus on that weakspot by saying eyes in different ways. Two solutions off the top of my head that beginners can do is to either sing eyes quickly... don't hold the note.. or sing it quietly. If it is a love song, by bryan adams, quietly would be the way. Quiet is the love volume, I've learned.
    Edit: If you can control vibrato, that can be uses on a held "eyes" note to avoid losing pitch.

    • @maxkaddell
      @maxkaddell 5 лет назад

      Here is a recent duet of a song that requires vowel sounds to be managed. The song is "you are the reason" by Calum Scott www.smule.com/p/1395168509_2579735329

The feedback process seems to be one of my primary functions as a teacher, such an awesome role to be, in a singers journey. Wondering if you've come across other apps that have been useful for this function? Cheers for all your good work and sharing it so generously!

Not to forget train ur voice 1 hour daily insead og going to gym train ur vocal muscles.

It took about 10 years, but I became a professional opera singer (soloist) and was positively reviewed in both the NY and LA Times, among others. These days I delight in helping singers improve and nonsingers find their singing ability!

    I enjoyed this presentation, but is there an app that generates a note of your choosing ,and when you sing it into phone it gives you a constant reading of the note as long as you sustain it?

  • @tonefingerz2021
    @tonefingerz2021 7 лет назад

    do u know if you put an EQ pedal in the FX loop of an amp if u put all the level levers down and turn volume on the amp all the way up is it more preamp tube distortion and vice versa all level levers up and volume way down if it will be more power tube distortion or which way has better tone? for guitars

  • @Ozrockerie

    This is fine if you can hear the notes and understand that you are singing it wrong or right. For me - I already have great pitch recognition. I have a new student who has problems hearing the pitch and correcting the pitch as he is singing the scale. I'm not one for using apps - but if I can find an app that recognises vocal pitch and tells me (or my student) what note they are actually singing - this will help them when I'm not there to tell them whether they are sharp, flat or way off.

      Have you considered using a 'Guitar tuning' app with a chromatic function?

      Not as yet. What is 'Chromatic function'.

    • @DrDanRobinson

      It allows you to tune the instrument, in this case, the voice, to any note on the chromatic scale.

      If you learn where to get the sound from you could see some very quick improvement. Unfortunately it is relatively easy to assess someone in person but not so much in writing. The desire to sing decently is very important on its own as well.

    Dan, do you have other videos to help improve singing on pitch, in tune? Also, do you have videos to help a person sing much longer, with more endurance, and not get sore, so they can sing a typical full 4 hour gig in a bar or club?

    • @michaelcraig9449
      @michaelcraig9449 7 лет назад

      Thank you very much..I sing a lot of Elvis, Lynyrd Skynyrd (the original, with Ronnie) and Allman Bros. type songs, deep to midrange, not too much high note stuff, a few high notes in some songs, but not too much..just want to improve, and go for it all the way, even though i am not a kid, or youngster. I done put off this dream too long, working every back breaking job around, now it is MY time to do this..

    I am not a beginner, it seems like this is something to work on and always try for improvement. My biggest problem is getting sore. I can only sing for an hour or 2 at max...but most gigs are 4 hours..how can I get from here to there? I am a full grown man, running out of time to reach max potential. I subscribed, but I cant afford to buy any special classes or anything. Living on prayer and peanut butter.

    Every video I have watched so far simply says practice singing these notes. If I am having trouble understanding the physical mechanics of producing those notes correctly in the first place then how can I practice singing the notes? Do you have a video that deals with how you use the different parts of you body (throat, stomach muscles, nose, tongue, etc) to produce a note correctly in the first place?

    That's all well and done Dr Dan but how do you prevent a singer's voice from trailing off in the tonal distance? In other words, how does a singer sing a long note (whole note for example) for 2 measures and keep that same pitch without becoming sharp or flat?

    • @DrDanRobinson

      I beg to differ Dr. Dan. Singing a pitch at first with help from a prop like a piano, but when it goes flat, how do you that prevent that from happening? With my students, I have them commit that tone into their tonal memory like an actor will commit a line of script to memory before performing on stage. Memory is key. It takes constant practice on that tone and all musical tones until it becomes part of their tonal memory. It can be done. It takes commitment but it can be done. How are all those tones really reinforced in singing, a course in solfeggio.

    • @jacklincoln7786
      @jacklincoln7786 5 лет назад
