A big trick to help with this is to alternate on simple syllables with the exercise. Ex: da ba da ba da ba da ba da. ALSO make sure you are letting the air lead the notes, instead of thinking of your voice switching on the notes! So think on the “breathy/airy” side of your voice when first practicing and don’t force the notes. Another tip, don’t let your jaw make the movements. It stays still :) good luck! You’ve got this!
I agree, practice is KEY. For me, Mariah Carey came out when I was in 1st grade and I practiced singing her songs exactly like her & learning the ability to do her runs. Also Whitney Houston, then Destinys Child (Beyonce) as a kid/teenager. Now I sing runs easily. You have to buy their entire album and sing w it when ur alone. But for me I started practicing at age 6 and now Im 35, but could sing very nicely w runs by my teens and better by my early 20s and still better now. Practice IS key.

One of the singers that always wowed me with his runs was AJ from the Backstreet Boys. He'd usually handle that part, and he'd somehow keep every single note separate and on-key, but at the same time the flow would be perfectly smooth. I never understood how he could do that.

When I started singing 4 years ago, I never thought I'd be at the point where I could think about practicing riffs and runs! But here I am, a pretty good singer just need to master this! Thank you so much for these videos, I am going to watch your other tutorials ❤️
omg i’ve been singing my whole life (in the shower and the car and any time there’s music playing) but recently since i’m stuck in quarentine i’m trying to learn more about technique and this helped so much thank you!!!!!
I watched about half a dozen videoes--the ONLY one --that is clear cut bones, easy-to-follow, do-able, solid exercise! But yet shows a singer-in-training what a developed stylized sound can be like without all the dogma, or the numerous, random gratuitous vocal selfies--that show off the singer but doesn't the singer in training. . Excellent lesson--thank you.
I think my issue with runs before this was that I wasn’t going up then down, I was just going down, and could never quite find the right note, but with this, I go up first, then back down to the first note and it sounds WAY better. Tysm! Learned a lot! Wow!
THIS IS EVERYTHING. I've been writing songs for years, and have been really trying to grow and expand as a vocalist. This is tremendous help. Thank you! I also feel that cultural connection. I had started to accept maybe my voice was just limited but now I feel awash in new possibilites.
My mind is blown! I don't sing in public or anything, but I'm an okay singer. I've been trying to do runs for about 40 years and I'm just not good at it. This made it click. I could feel something in my brain snap into place. I did it first try and it wasn't terrible! I appreciate you! I'm going to go practice!
I'll start off on Wednesday (today) doing these exercises. By this time tomorrow, I'll think I'm a pro and abandon all these techniques! Sluring and sliding on all these notes!
My story on how I learned to sing, from a regular person who has never had a vocal coach or been professional: practice is definitely KEY. I happened to be in 1st grade, age 6, when Mariah Carey came out in 1990 w "Vision of Love" and that album. Also, Whitney Houston was out at the same time and HUGE. My parents bought me all Mariah albums for me and the Whitney "Bodyguard" album was VERY IMPORTANT in helping me learn to sing. Although I rarely practiced at the age of 6, just in the car when w my Mom or in the house, by the time I was in 4th & 5th grade and then all thru middle school, I would come home from school and practice singing Mariah, Whitney, Christina Aguilera, Destiny's Child (Beyonce sang all the parts, lets be honest) etc. and practicing for at least an hour until my parents got home from work! I was an only child so it was easy. I would ALWAYS sing along w whatever songs came on the radio in the car bc my Mom would also sing along but at some point around High School, I started getting better than my Mom! Both of us sang in the school chorus until 9th grade but neither of us sang a solo in front of the school bc we were too scared, when we should've gotten up there bc we were good! By high school, I got a karaoke machine but instead of singing to the songs it came w (most I didn't like or some were out of my range and didn't make me sound my best) I started recording myself (using a cassette player, which the karaoke machine came w along w a microphone, and listening back w headphones on) singing to Mariah, Christina (Genie in a Bottle & her 1st album- so many runs), Destinys Child and had the ability to be my own vocal coach and fix the parts where I didn't sound well and worked on my singing techniques all by myself. By the time I was 18, I would only sing in front of family, in the car, or in front of my best friend who told me how great of a singer I was and basically peer pressured me 1 night to sing in front of a group of our friends. I did and they all agreed and ever since, I sometimes sing in front of ppl but have never been on stage or in a band. Its like a hobby. I practice every single day when I'm home alone after work or whatever, when my kids are at school or outside playing, singing in the shower, and I find I sing best after drinking a hot drink like coffee or tea and after being exposed to the humidity of a shower, which there is a reason ppl sound so good in the shower besides the acoustics. Anyways, I'm now in my 30s and I can sing runs even better BUT I smoke cigarettes and have lost MOST of my higher note range, including the Mariah Carey whistle register! I hope that if I stop smoking and w practice as before, I can get it back! In the meantime, he is right in that practice is key. Sing along w the music when you are alone. Your vocal cords are a muscle and can be developed. Now if you don't have the ability to stat in tune or key then you will probably never be able to sing. Just being honest. I just have natural musical ability I think. I am also on YT browsing singing videos to see if theres anything I can learn to help me, but tbh I have runs & riffs down pat. I hope my own honest true life story about singing has inspired people to practice and work at it, and DO NOT SMOKE!!! It makes your voice sound horrible and the mucus you will cough up everyday is like when you are sick and congested - REALLY GROSS, besides the fact we now KNOW FOR A 100% FACT SMOKING KILLS AND CAUSES CANCER AND BIRTH DEFECTS.
You are such a great teacher! This technique… which always seemed so advanced… was very accessible after watching/practicing along with you. I have been singing karaoke for a bit… getting positive responses from people. But I would avoid any songs with any serious vocal runs. Pleased to say that… with your help… I recently performed Teddy Swims “I Lose Control” and received a standing ovation… not a song I would have attempted before this.
Thank u so much for helping me understand this! I’ve been a vocalist most of my life and never been able to “master” how to read music or understand these concepts! ♥️♥️♥️
Wow you make it so much simpler! Thank you so much, I’m learning “leave me lonely” on piano (singing along) and I’m struggling with some of the runs Ariana does so I’m hoping this will help!
wow this actually helped! i didn’t exactly know how to do riffs or runs but after watching this video and practicing the pentatonic scale a few times, i finally understood it. thank u!

One of the singers that always wowed me with his runs was AJ from the Backstreet Boys. He'd usually handle that part, and he'd somehow keep every single note separate and on-key, but at the same time the flow would be perfectly smooth. I never understood how he could do that.
put a finger down if you're here in quarantine, trying to learn how to how to do runs like Maddison beer because they are obsessed with tik tok. 👏🏽
edit: I commented this before Maddison was “cancelled “🤭
mia d 😭
Fuck how did u know!!!😂😂😂
OMG LITERALLY ME

you didnt have to come at me like that bruh
Holy shit I actually did one silly run after practising with this video for two days. Thank you!!!
Did you keep up the practice? How is it one year on?
@@Super-id7bq Omg did not realize a year had already past. I have been practicing a lot on and off and my voice is soooo much better than what it used to be. Finna start the grind against thanks ( :
Wow! My voice just got a lil better now. You’re the best person who teaches this! I’m gonna watch this video 3 times a day now! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! THANK YOU MAN!♥️
Is it just me or this sounds like an ancient Chinese music...
i was thinking the same exact thing lmao
Ancient Chinese music uses the pentatonic scale a ton haha and that's what we're singing
That legit what we got taught in music to tell the pentatonic majors it will sound like Chinese music
You aren’t wrong. Chinese music us mainly from 12345 only
It's not just you ! Lol I hear it as well. Btw you fine 😏😍
Never to late for anyone to learn this stuff I’m not a singer but I do enjoy to sing along and sing in general around friends etc , I totally understand now how this all works with ones voice , awesome teaching here , great video loved it. 👍
I first saw this video in 2016 and it has really helped me. This was my foundational video.
I am back again in 2024 😊.
Thank you so much, you're the best!

6 years ago okay...I'm practicing it right now in 2020 because I was really amaze of jungkook's voice when he's putting a curve since I became their fan...
Man, I've been doing this for 10 minutes and I've almost got it! I'm not as smooth or as fast as you when you do it, but still, I got it! I asked The Lord for help, and He sure did! I should have this down pat in no time. Thank you!
Me: *hears the word pentatonic*
Me: WHO SAID PENTATONIX
lmao no
Yass
me too
Lol

I watched about half a dozen videoes--the ONLY one --that is clear cut bones, easy-to-follow, do-able, solid exercise! But yet shows a singer-in-training what a developed stylized sound can be like without all the dogma, or the numerous, random gratuitous vocal selfies--that show off the singer but doesn't the singer in training. . Excellent lesson--thank you.
"Pentatonic scale"
Me: ayeeee any pentaholics out there
SCOTT HOYING IS THE RIFF KING!
YES
Lies. The king of riffs is AVI! :D
Jordan Peckham what?
***** Avi Kaplan??? >:P
the exercise is something we used to do as a warm up in the young australian broadway chorus.
I think my issue with runs before this was that I wasn’t going up then down, I was just going down, and could never quite find the right note, but with this, I go up first, then back down to the first note and it sounds WAY better. Tysm! Learned a lot! Wow!
Thanks!

When i heard Camila Cabello's riffs and runs, i get inspire by her, and now i'm her😍 i wish i can riffs and runs like her
CAMILIZER YASSSS

I'll start off on Wednesday (today) doing these exercises. By this time tomorrow, I'll think I'm a pro and abandon all these techniques! Sluring and sliding on all these notes!

This is helpful, always tried to run riffs and runs
I love your charisma and how you have so much faith in our abilities. I shall continue this! You make it so easy! (:
Him: “This with Style”
Me: screaming like dori at the whale 🐋
😂😂 omg . bra these comments got me rolling
All I can think is Harry Styles
😹😹😹
indeed...the queen of runs n riffs frm philipine Elaine Duran really good at this...so impressive..
sounds like Chinese music
Melinda Banks Isom..It really does. I found it beautiful.
😂😂😂same
The Chinese scale system is built from the pentatonic scale
Melinda Banks Isom faaaacts haha
Melinda Banks Isom LOL 😝
JAZMINE SULLIVAN, TORI KELLY, LAUREN HILL... my inspiration. AMEN!
This was 6 years ago and he has the best quality ever
This is amazing. Mind=blown. Just unlocked so much for me vocally. Thank you thank you thank you!!!
I cant believe he can sing that good😮😮
This is a 9 year old video, and I found it today and oh my goodness this made runs so much easier to understand!!! Thank you so much!
Thank u so much for helping me understand this!
I’ve been a vocalist most of my life and never been able to “master” how to read music or understand these concepts! ♥️♥️♥️
Wow you make it so much simpler! Thank you so much, I’m learning “leave me lonely” on piano (singing along) and I’m struggling with some of the runs Ariana does so I’m hoping this will help!
wow this actually helped! i didn’t exactly know how to do riffs or runs but after watching this video and practicing the pentatonic scale a few times, i finally understood it. thank u!
Wow..so simple yet very effective!! Been searching for a great way for riffs..this is it!!
I love this video, after weeks practicing this exercises i can see a huge difference with my vocal runs. This is beyond helpful♥
So sad i found it after 8 years.
I had an accidental run when I sang the death of the bachelor. It was so good, but I can't do it anymore. I need to learn this!
earned yourself a subscriber.. makes sense, ive been trying to break this down for a while.. I sing decently but I feel that I get outshined by those who do riffs and curls, imma get down and learn this properly.. many thanks =)
OH! I remember watching this on my way home from work a couple years back. It was hard for me to grasp back then but I think I get it now!
This definitely helped me! I was frustrated trying to perform a riff I saw on TikTok, then I saw this and it definitely helped. Thx
