So my problems within my runs are that I can't hit the notes fast enough. I can easily predict the next notes within the additional tiers on a slower level, but when I try to speed it up, the notes blur together. What should I be doing to improve the separation between my notes?
Halocene break the riff down and practice it realllll slow. once you can hit them perfectly at a steady tempo, speed it up little by little. it's like a drummer. you're not born with crazy chops, you have to build them up. start slow
Just keep practicing the same riff a capela over and over until it's viable. Start by doing it at the fastest speed you can do successfully, and gradually speed it up. Practice every speed step until it's clear, and speed up until you reach normal speed. Then do it with the singer/the song until you're smiling because of success. You should probably be able to do it within a full day or in the course of a week at most.
Hell yea I was hella impressed. Breaking down the practice of how the vocalist practice there riffs before a performance to get warmed up with scales and these pentatonic riffs
So, I’ve been doing these exercises for 2 months straight almost every day and I’ve got so much better. I was struggling heavily with part 1 but now I do it effortlessly and I can almost complete part 2 smoothly as well. It’s worth it everyone, commit yourself and do it!
One tier: 0:44 with numbers 0:54 with style Two tiers: 1:03 with numbers 1:09 with style Another tier: 1:18 with numbers 1:25 with style More tiers: 1:37 Minor pentatonic: 1:49 1:58 with tier 2:06 with 2 tiers
@@goofy2715 Keep practicing. You will get better in time. Check out his other videos as well, follow him on Instagram and go to his lives to practice too. 🤗👍🏼
You sir, have truly cracked the code. There are many sites and tutorials about riffing, some of them are quite informative. But there is no other site on the entire internet that does what your does. No one else has explained where riffs come from or how they are generated. Your triangle really is a work of genius. I didn't get it at first until you talked about the basic riff vocabulary and the riffs associated with different genres. Then you combined the basic riffes to create longer riffs. No one else has developed a system that internalizes the riff vocabulary, that sir is revolutionary!! And your vocals are no joke! Thanks again my brother.
WeBe Rhythm bro, you totally get me! Few understand what it is that I'm doing, but you GET IT brother! Thanks for the messages! Ill try to add you on Facebook!
Oh my GOD. I'm sitting here tripping for real, sir. LOL I've played keyboard my whole life. I've stayed basic. I'm good at math. But who knew, math AND music together would teach me Riffs and Runs???!!! lol
What I like most about your coaching is your practice with the notes matches the practice singing.. some coaches will play out the notes but the vocal sound totally different than the musical notes😊
As a singer who has never really had strong runs, I'm excited to work this into my craft. I'm gonna use it to practice guitar scales too. 2 bird 1 stone kinda thing lol
To be honest i stopped singing from high school and i cant seem to be able to sing like i use to and i gave up but this video taught me something and i'm willing to start practicing again
+PaulMckayONEvoice They say every voice can be trained to an degree but I have come to terms with the fact that I will never be able to sing. But I love hearing beautiful voices. You're amazing!
Roxanne Mapache ... yasss gurl! I wonder how many of us vocal less singers are watching these threads... my riffs sound more like RIPS... "WTH are you tearing up in there besides my eardrums" says anyone within earshot 😂😂😂
I was told I could not sing from a tender age. however when I started to tune my mind and tune out the negativity I realized I had a good voice and so I started to teach myself using RUclips and this video is by far the best at teaching me runs thank you very much Paul it has helped a lot can't wait to try it out... gonna keep practicing though. Peace!
If you've ever done the solfège game where you go Do, Do-Re-Do, Do-Re-Mi-Re-Do etc, it's exactly this. It helped me to do that exercise and to help me to understand this video.
Thank you soooooo much!! I've been wondering how artists like Tori Kelly break their riffs and runs down. This makes perfect sense. You have such a unique view on vocal work and you are an amazing singer. I will definitely be buying your DVDs
I've always felt like the quality of my voice was nice, but to an extent that I was incompetent because I couldn't do a run. the vid is interesting! hope I nail it
Paul, you are very cool teacher! I love you so much! Now I can sing riffs and runs perfectly! Thank you^^ Your voice very beautiful, I really like it:)
Yes if u take your time, don't strain. Know where to put your voice when going through octaves ( chest,mix/mask,head) Madeline Harvey's videos would be great for exploring and expanding range. Since watching her I've discovered I can go from a D3 to a G6 without straining. I just need to tune it up on the high end ☺️
This is so good for ALL musicians including vocalists. Guitarists, Bassists, Keyboard players, Sax, Trumpet ... literally every instrument on the spectrum can benefit from such info. I teach this stuff to my students here in the UK and it always hits the spot ... particularly when one starts introducing passing sharps n flats on the way e.g. minor 3rd on the way to the major or flatted 5th on the way to the 5th .... maybe even a raised 5th on the way to a possible 6th ;-)
YOUR VIDEOS WORKED. I’m laying in bed practicing and instead of trying to over complicate things I just sing the notes and just sped them up, The hard part can be putting it into an everyday song like something by Beyoncé 😭
I have to say, within a few minutes of practicing the technique with these visualizations in mind and really just going for it my runs improved dramatically.
I've been told I was pretty good singing in church, but I didn't know what a run or a riff was until I heard Kim Burrell" found him" lol, and I've just been a sponge ever since, but you break it down in theory, you know the science behind everything vocally, it's crazy!!! Kim,zacardi And MR.PAUL God bless you bro
I just want to say "WOW". I sing with runs and riffs already, but wanted to do better. The way you broke it down was so simple, but very impactful. Thank you for this.
Thank you very much for this content. I really learned how to make riffs. But I loved your English, I'm Brazilian, watched the video without caption and only realized when it was over. I got it very well. Thank you.
You have a gift to make the listener feel as if you are instructing them and them only thank you for making me feel that way it makes me want to be a better vocalist and artist sincerely!
You love to add those tiers. You can feel it in your spirit. I can sing with riffs and runs. Sometimes they just get choppy for some reason my voice gets tense at times. The ability is there. You do it well though.
I'm a Filipino and it's true that many people here can sing well but I found most of the blacks are bit more good at styles when it comes to singing. It's really amazing! I admire their styles, and by watching this tutorial it made me more amaze to them. Urgh! Ps. This tutorial help mo a lot in improving my runs and riffs. First video that really helps me a lot to improve my singing. I recommend this to my friends. Just subbed💓
the best teacher in this world.. your voice is amazing!!! I really really love it, and your videos and the way you teach... thanks 4 share you talent and your knowledge!!
I am Brazilian ... A Maximo their classes ... I know little English ... But I'm getting to understand some things ... This lesson is melismas ??? Already grateful
I'm not a SINGER singer, but I like singing alone and I've been wanting to improve a bit, even if my singing's just for me. I was decent at short runs, but by watching just two of your videos, I've already improved massively?? This could get me hooked on learning to be a decent vocalist, not gonna lie, man.
Es una maravilla cuando cantas, se aprende solo con escucharte, muchas gracias, escucharé todo, aprenderé mucho, yo fui cantante profesional y tengo la carrera de canto clásico too
Thanks a lot, man. I personally have a decent ear but have always been more of an opera type singer. Runs have always been a challenge for me, until now. :D
OMG... yes! So, I have been trying figure out a way to practice/work on my riffs/scales. I am a very visual person (I need to see it to understand it) I'm really good at studying for school & remembering things but I fail at remembering a riffs, I'll skip notes everytime! I always wanted my riff/scales to be clean and on purpose... not just "happenstance" and I must say you have probably just changed my music/vocal LIFE right now!! Seriously, where have u been with this triangle scale thingy?! -Thank you!
you're amazing!!!!!

You sing with so much soul even when giving examples...
So my problems within my runs are that I can't hit the notes fast enough. I can easily predict the next notes within the additional tiers on a slower level, but when I try to speed it up, the notes blur together. What should I be doing to improve the separation between my notes?

Halocene I have this same exact problem drives me nuts. I try to snap my fingers slowly first to get it and then fast while I'm practicing.
Go here if you want to learn how to sing like a pro: HootSing. com
Just keep practicing the same riff a capela over and over until it's viable.

@YesSirNoMam so what do you think about it after all this practice? Did you really done that hour a day? What are your honest thoughts?
Oh my GOD. I'm sitting here tripping for real, sir. LOL I've played keyboard my whole life. I've stayed basic. I'm good at math. But who knew, math AND music together would teach me Riffs and Runs???!!! lol
So... About those Jacksons!
Someone famous said, "Music is math."
Sorry but counting is considered math? 🤣🤣🤣
This guy is really good..been looking for vocal mentor..i think i just found one
What I like most about your coaching is your practice with the notes matches the practice singing.. some coaches will play out the notes but the vocal sound totally different than the musical notes😊

this guy can hit notes higher than my IQ fml
Correct me if I'm wrong, but these exercises can also help increase your vocal range right?
Yes if u take your time, don't strain. Know where to put your voice when going through octaves ( chest,mix/mask,head) Madeline Harvey's videos would be great for exploring and expanding range.
