  • How To Sing On Pitch - How To Sing In Tune - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
    Pitch is a big subject, and the reasons for lack of good pitch vary from person to person.
    While there are similar reasons people struggle with pitch, there are also many differences.
    Let me explain:
    We must first start at the the beginning, with the building blocks, in order to eliminate the moving targets that inhibit good pitch.
    1. Support Is King: Good diaphragmatic abdominal support. This is the engine that drives your car. Without it, especially when ascending a passage, scale, or higher notes in a song, pitch will be directly affected by this one component alone. Make sure you are supporting all your notes throughout your range. This will build consistency and remove this as being a possible obstacle.
    2. Relaxation Response: We must understand that since the abdomen is carrying the load (for strength in the sound) we must train the chest, neck, and throat to relax, to let the abdomen do the “heavy lifting.”
    3. Vowel Placement: We must also learn correct vowel modifications and build good muscle-memory to hold that vowel placement. In other words we need to understand how it is supposed to feel in the throat for these vowels when we sing. If we don’t, it’s like a car with no steering wheel or a ship with no rudder. We need to confidently “steer” these vowels in the right direction with the greatest of ease in the throat.
    4. Over-Enunciation Of Consonants: Because we are training with “Open Throat Technique” (to keep the back of the throat as open as possible and not close down the throat when we sing with something called “contiguous phrase singing.” De-emphasizing the consonants enables us to not close down the throat during consonants, and not have to “re-set” up the vowels, so we aren’t constantly having to try to re-open the vocal tract to find that space in the throat again.
    5. Air Compression: When we go up and down in a song, there are different amounts of air compression that builds up in the head. The higher we go, the more this compression occurs. The effect of this is much like the doppler effect of a train or police siren passing by at a high speed. Though the “true” sound of the train doesn’t change, there is a perceived change in the “pitch” of that train or siren. We must learn to compensate for this. Try an experiment and you will see what I mean. Get yourself a pair of “closed back” headphones (so there is no air/ audio leak from the outside). Put on some music where music is playing in the room and have the same music playing in your headphones. You will notice that after listening for about 30 seconds, when you remove the headphones, the “pitch” will drop. It doesn’t actually drop, it’s just your perception of this pitch will sound “flat” or underneath the pitch you heard in your headphones compared to the room. Now let’s relate this to voice. When we ascend a scale or passage, this same kind of “doppler” effect happens in the head. We train ourselves to be able to compensate for this change.
    6. Ear Training Exercises: To “sharpen” one’s ear to good pitch, there are some excellent exercises that can be done to conquer pitch issues with confidence. It takes time, consistency, and patience. I cover these concepts in my singing course called “How To Sing Better Than Anyone Else.”
    Great Singing To You!

    Imagine loving to sing but you are just so tone-deaf and one day you give birth to a child who sings anything naturally in perfect pitch with no effort whatsoever, any note is recreated exactly and they can improvise and sound good all the time lol. Music has always been a thing in my home. I'm blessed. My kid loves singing and I'm watching your videos to help her get better and have more discipline, she expressed her desire to be a singer. Thank you for all the tips and lessons, much appreciated.

      Omg YES! Play a random note on the piano and I can reasonably quickly identify what note it is (so I know I have good sense of pitch), but when I sing I'm pitchier than I realize (and it's usually a hair flat).

      There's a trick for that I've seen idk if it works but you can try it
      Put your hands or a book or paper or something in front of your ears. Dont wrap it around your ears just put it right in front of them with, if you use your hand, your palm facing the front

      @@daisyisnotreal I know it too, it works! Can even put fingers in front of ears and press a little, you'll see the difference... If not, keep singing straight and take fingers away slowly and again bring 'em back and press slowly you'll definitely see the difference, and yeah that's how people hear you, not like recording voice...

    Someone help: when I sing WITH someone or WITH the radio, I'm ALWAYS on pitch. I can sing perfectly and hot every note. BUT when I try to sing ON MY OWN, I'm a half step flat constantly. Just a half step but that half step key is the consistent. Why is this? (When I play with my guitar, it's 50/50)

      I'm not sure what My colo or tone would be in, if I sing low I sound dark, but if I sing in a tone I think in between like Baritone, I think, not sure, no one ever told Me exactly what My range is exactly, but I think some where around that erea. i know one time I covered the Song Serenity, by the band Godsmack, being as a request, but I'm not sure exactly what range Sully Erna sings in, but that song I like a lot, and wish I could sing it better.

    I haven't watched yet, but recording yourself singing actually does wonders. I used to be very in tune with my voice because I used to record covers. But for like 2 years I just sang to sing, after recording myself again I noticed I was singing with not enough chest voice. Within 10 minutes of fixing it (since I've already learned previously) I sounded 10x better and was more confident in my voice.

    This guy knows his stuff, He is giving so much information out, it amazes me! I know because my mother studied opera many years ago and I took singing lessons when I was younger in New York City. Even though I was one of the LIGHTS ON BROADWAY, that didnt make it big, NEVER SAY NEVER!!!!!
    It is very inspirational to see such a great person with such great talent generously giving out great information for free, I would pay any amount of money to get private lessons from Ken Tamplin because I can see he is really unique and can get you started on a singing career fast and easy , Of course, you need discipline and study. I wish I would have known him years ago, when I was trying to break into show business,I I am praising this man because I know how difficult it can be when you want to become a vocalist to get the right teachers that are sincere and really care, and this man is giving out all this basic knowledge to the public and I really appreciate that in this day and age when people are not like that, He is sharing his great success!!! Music was a big thing in my home too , my family was from Naples , Italy, where some of the most beautiful songs in the world are written!!!

    The point about brightness is a huge revelation. I was hesitant of it because I wanted to sound darker, but the technically correct way to get that darkness is from that bright coordination, as Ken points out. Nowhere in fact is ping more important than in opera, as it is what carries the voice unamplified across an entire stadium.

    The most hardest thing to sing on pitch for me is to reach high notes I want to reach with head voice, but I have to sustain in a better way my head voice which is too nasal sometimes and weak about sustaining , and try to take a better passagio between chest voice and head voice. But I have to tell you, I recorded almost 85 songs in a year, and when you rest your voice, rest your body and your mind, and doing the right warm up exercices, you reach any goals.

  • @generalhighground5300
    @generalhighground5300 5 лет назад +6

    I never knew how much I actually struggled with pitch until I watched this video. My technique was completely wrong. I was always reaching for the notes instead of like Ken said, dropping down on them from behind. Thanks Ken!

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but did Freddie Mercury not do the fish tailing he's warning against in the video? His example reminded me of Don't Stop me Now by Queen. If you even listen to Freddie's vocals you can hear it in several songs.

    • @SpaceTravel1776
      @SpaceTravel1776 5 лет назад +2

      Max Amillion, Mercury does it briefly as a dramatic singing effect, making “ahhh” sounds and not singing words. He doesn’t do it find the correct pitch of a note like an amateur might try to do to cheat into it.

    I would really love to see tips on how to arpeggiate, kind a like Christina Aguilera or Jessie J for guys. My arpeggiating sounds like one big glissando.
    Also I find in a live performance I tend to sing sharp, but recording I sing on pitch. Any tips for staying on pitch with all that adrenaline?

    Great mental advice about coming in from behind the note!. Scooping up to the note has been a beotch of bad habit for me to break. I'm slowly purging this problem from my singing. Ken...another one of your phrases that rings in my head everyday is "a well placed note". You mentioned this during your vibrato videos but I've adopted that mindset to make me more aware of nailing the pitch and avoiding the "scoop". During many of the exercises in your course I will end a scale with a "well placed note" and relax into the light vibrato. Ive got some bad habits to chase down. Thanks for all of your help!

    Great lesson! Ken, I have a question for you, I can't hit higher notes but as far as I know my voice range is E, and I've noticed that diaphragmatic breathing is hard for me i can't do it right. Also, I don't understand how to sing using the head. What would you advise me to do to improve this on my own? Thanks in advance! Been watching your videos and they're so easy to understand, they're not filled with technical terms that most of us are not familiar with.

    I am a low talker but when I sing I am whole different person. Maybe my pitch just different people can’t hear me when I talk but when I sing I have really high notes. Well I just don’t like to talking to people maybe or just don’t want to strain my singing voice😂.

    A week ago my band performed in a more or less big club and it was our first time performing with good sound. First time I heard myself singing live. It was so terrible that I don't want to post videos of my performance. I shredded a lot of good guitar solos, but singing was just disgusting. I sang sometimes half tone lower or higher, so singing was just not connected to music. But while performing it, I thought everything is OK. How??

    Hi Ken! Instead of recording myself (because that doesn't bode well with my confidence) I usually play the note on my keyboard, try to sing it back, and use a tuner app on my phone to correct my pitch. Is that something you would advocate against?
    Kind regards, Tony

    Related to this, how would I teach someone who isn't singing on pitch but wants to? Like, something basic. I've tried, suggesting to find a song they find easy to sing and like you said, record and listen back. They did but then I didn't know what to tell them next except practice it over and over :/ I'm a perfectionist a bit when it comes to pitch so I just repeat the same part over and over until I hit it right. But it doesn't work for anyone seems like. If you see this comment, I'd like a suggestion, thanks :)

    Good one Ken! Very good point about the coloration along with pitch. I sing and play sax and sax players are always fiddling with their mouthpieces and adjusting for coloration. A high baffle mouthpiece is a brighter (less colored) sound. But you are quite right ... if you are out of tune or off pitch then you are out of tune more brightly. Excellent points you make... and the sax is the instrument that is closest to the human voice so many of your techniques cross over into the sax world nicely.

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, Joseph! There are so many things about tone and intonation that are common to the saxophone and to the human voice! The breath support is another such area of similarities. It's nice to hear from you. Thanks for commenting! 😊

    Every vocalist has that one artist they are prone to because their pitch may be similar.
    Mine was Brad Delp.
    As we age,we all develop swelling and issues in throat from pushing ourselves in our youth not taking care of vocal health,so I noticed a trick he moved on to retain his open throat technique that, even Ken says is so crucial.(I am guessing it was his reason?)
    Brad set his mic stand up high,so his throat was naturally open facing upward to the mic,then he must of found it easier to insentuate his intricate changes with nothing obstructing.
    At first I wondered if was due to his band mates being all 6ft 5,like Tom S only they never ended up near his mic so it must of been to retain opened throat..
    I tried it and it sure works.
    Did you ever hear of such a thing Ken?

    Another high quality video, Ken. In your experience how much time should be spent practicing scales and how much practicing songs? Loving the slinky analogy by the way!

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks, Guitar! Half and half is good after you have the basics of singing down. In the early stages of learning the basics, you should spend more time on scales and technique, because repeating songs with bad technique isn't that good for you. Learning technique takes a lot of training on scales. Songs can make singing a lot more fun, but so can being able to sing better because you worked out on training scales.

    Hey Ken! I've just watched 6 of your RUclips videos in a row and I must say that aside from your engaging charisma, you are very articulate in your demonstrations, your repertoire and in your instruction delivery.
    I am 37 yr old (redheaded.. yes that's important) woman from Sydney, Australia.
    I've been singing in choirs, school bands and garage bands as a teen and now as an adult I'm re-entering my love for singing again. The first time I knew I needed to sing was when I came to live in Australia from Ireland at the age of 7 and still had my Irish accent. I was sitting with a group of (paid) Irish musos at a pub and they started playing Dublin's Fair City. Without thinking I just started singing and before I knew it the instruments stopped and the entire pub was listening (which was a lot of people back then as it was the 80s on a Sunday afternoon jamming session). I was so lost in the moment that I hadn't noticed until I stopped. The whole place thundered in applause and I'll never forget how that felt. Then I quickly ran away with embarassment. Lol
    Now I'm a woman and a mother of 5 boys. I've only now discovered that all these years I've actually had a very big fear of a Capella singing.. maybe since that first time I never thought I could live up to that same level again. I will only sing to backing tracks, instruments and I'm definitely more comfortable with a mic... it's like I magically turn on my voice and without a mic it's invisible (if you get that analogy).
    It's in recognising this fear that I've realised I actually have a lack of confidence in my voice underneath my "performer's confidence".
    I feel like I'm ripping away all the layers and exposing my vulnerabilities as a singer to become the best at what I love and starting right at the beginning.
    Your videos are definitely helping me progress in a way I hadn't allowed myself before.
    Thankyou. Xo

    hmmm, very good video again!
    I have an intermittent problem with the pitch "drifting away" from me. I start singing and everything is fine and it's fine and it's fine and it's fine and it's fine and it's fine and then it happens. One note just disobeys and goes sharp or flat and it's too late to bend it back or it won't help!!! It's not that I don't hear it but "something" just happens and sometimes it's at the same note in a song that just won't obey. Or I practice for a while and everything seems fine so I record a verse, a chorus, a verse and then in the next chorus a note just dies ...
    What to do???

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  7 лет назад

      PPop, I'd have to hear it to be sure, but I think you might be having a problem with inconsistent support. That will throw your notes off easily.

    Hey ken i have a question. I m a 15y/o singer and im thinking about buying one of your courses. I really want to increase my vocal range with stuff like mixed voice and get a bit grit in my voice. I had singing lessons for 1 year now and i can do things like breathing and basic stuff. I also explored some technique that lets me get a lot higher in a lower volume but im not sure if i do it right. I usually practice siginf around 1-2 hours a day. I really like matt shadows by the way he is a really good singer in my opinion. Which of your courses woult you recomend?

    Hi,
    My Problem area is RELATIVE PITCH and songs written with Melody Phrases written with Repeat Notes and Near Notes.
    For Eg. LOVE byMicheal Buble or Simple Songs like - Rocking Around A Christmas Tree . The only way is to lesrn the song is to download music score and play with piano note for note and visualise the distance between the notes and the pattern of the melody phrases.
    I am good with songs written with melodies notes written further apart. Strangelysometimes I can play by ear on the keyboard Repeat Notes and a couple of Near notes but I cant sing it initial few times. In certain songs, I can sing it but unable to play the notes on keyboard by ear.
    I have tried downloading Singing Intervals Apps but the more I try the worse I become,
    Whats your diagnosis and advise?

I have been singing for several years and one of the things I find challenging is consistently taking in the air at the right time as not to interrupt my rhythm or sound like I am rushing to catch my breath vs. simply breathing. Gotta say, Great personality man! Question for ya though. I do my own singing off and on, and have tried to find my own voice for years. I'm not a high pitched vocalist by no means, nor can I sing with a ton of power, but very low (deep) and soft. For the most part I have a lot of rasp in my voice and can stay in key. But when I try to push the louder notes just slightly I have a hard time going back to the lower register I was previously in. Example: Lets say I'm in a Cmaj. I can go straight to 2 octaves higher, but can't seem to smoothly go back to the Cmaj again. Anyway, Thanks again man! Great Channel!

    If someone were to be not very confident in hearing the tone and their voice and being able to tell if they were sharp or flat. Could they use some sort of pitch measuring instrument to sort of train both their ears and voice?

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  6 лет назад

      Yes, there are apps that can show you what note you are on, whether you are sharp or flat, and give you help in developing a sense of pitch-hearing. The goal is to become adept at hearing it naturally, so that you can move on from the app.
