Hi, Ramsey -- Here's a method I've used to help dozens of long-time non singers realize they can warble. Instead of asking Mr. I Can't Sing to match a tone on piano, which sets them up for failure, I ask them to make a tone, any tone (I might have to model what I mean with my voice). When they make some sound, I say, "Good can you do it again and hold it for a few seconds?" When they do, I do my best to match their tone with my voice. Just matching one tone usually makes eyes light up. From there it's on to "Can you make another sound . . . then a different one?" Again, I may have to model sounding two different notes. Whatever they do, I match their tone. Laughter ensues, and so does the realization that Mr. Can't Sing actually can. What do you (and your gentle viewers) think of this method? Thanks for reading this.
@@pedro-ehlamaar8084 greetings, "tone deaf" is an interesting term that can have different meanings. Anyone who enjoys music and can tell one song from another isn't really, truly, deeply tone deaf. What most us who label ourselves as tone deaf have trouble with is just what you said, "Making a tone with our mouth that matches another tone." Often the trouble has a physical component -- we don't have the muscle control to make the matching tone. I am that way when it comes to whistling, and my brother, who is a fabulous whistler, has the problem when it comes to singing. When I try to whistle a tune, my tongue simply isn't agile enough to make the right note. It's not that I think I'm an OK whistler. As I whistle, I know I'm blowing out almost random sounds, even when attempting to whistle a familiar tune, like "Happy Birthday." A hopelessly tone deaf person can't tell one song from another. This is very rare, and I doubt anyone interested in music -- as you obviously are -- is really tone deaf. One way to check this is to noodle around on a piano. As you hit successive notes, see if any of the combinations familiar, like parts of a song. If that is the case, you aren't tone deaf. In fact, you are making music -- with your fingers. Again, the problem is physical, with your "mouth," not your ear. Another way of putting this is that anyone who thinks they are tone deaf because they sound "bad" when singing isn't, in fact, tone deaf. What they need is to improve their ability to make matching tones. If you have access to a piano type keyboard -- and there are several, free, online -- like this one www.onlinepianist.com/virtual-piano you can make progress and have fun by noodling around, making some tunes -- and then, when you feel like it, without the pressure of someone else commanding you and listening to you -- just make a tone and see if it matches. If it doesn't, no big deal. Just scootch around inside your mouth and make a different tone, and then another. Eventually you will get the knack of making matching tones. oh, by the way, in addition to the difference between whistling and singing and making music with fingers, some people who have trouble making tones with their mouths can be quite good as hummers. peace, keep on warbling -- dan
I think your use of the word tone is incorrect. You mean to say pitch. Tone is about resonance, timbre... Makes it more difficult to understand the lesson, and adds more confusion than should be. Remember you asked...
@@dandamerville You are assuming that tone deaf is the same as completely deaf to tones. Just like with vision, people can see better than others, hearing too, does not require a person to either hear or not hear. There are degrees... fine tuning between semitones may actually be impossible for some people who have a hearing impairment of several kinds of impairments that exist, and are not fully understood through research to date. So it is possible they hear example of which note is higher or lower, but they cannot distinguish if they are too sharp or too flat. The myth of tone deaf is that if you hear the semitones you are not tone deaf. That is the myth. Ask Huey Lewis

Good info. I spent 25 years in recording studios. One of my best 2 vocals took place after I’d slept very little the night before the session. The recording studio was an hour drive away. I was very tired but my mind was too tired to think. With my thinking mind utterly silent, every aspect of the vocal was my best ever.
You are an amazing teacher! Making me under WHY to do these “ silly” exercises… / warm ups, no one ever explained about the vocal chords, and how to clear them, posture, etc and how to keep going excellent
So glad you mentioned feeling the voice vibrations. When Im on its the most incredible feeling through my whole body. When not it just feels bad and gets worse the farther off I am. Thanks for the lesson. New to actually learning to sing. I appreciate your help very much 🙏

My right vocal cord has been paralyzed for the past 13 years. I lost a lot of my vocal control (in fact, all of the control I ever had on the right side), and after 9 months of voice therapy, and many subsequent years of hard work, I still can't reliably sing on pitch. Oddly, I can usually stay on pitch when I hum, and my voice is more reliable on songs that I knew extremely well before the paralysis (I've been singing all my life). I'm a songwriter and I'd like to release my songs as a singer/songwriter, unfortunately I'm afraid that I might not be able to do that without autotuning the life out of my performances. I used to have a very good voice that I got a lot of compliments on. Do you have any suggestions for someone like me?
Can't sing anymore. Damaged my voice from my early years of classroom teaching, where I didn't really use my voice correctly. Came here to improve my pitch accuracy on my theremin.
This will be very helpful as I have to sing by listening to chords ( a lot) and I rush home, buy sheet music and memorize the tune by plunking it out on my keyboard.

Subscribed. Nice will give this a try. I did a short song recording and was surprised to hear myself flat or sharp in some part- whilst during the recording I was so confident I was hitting the right notes. 😂 Until I heard the result.. then I realised I may not be hitting them at all 😝
I just want to make a point to those fussy students who pick up on imperfections that the aim of the teacher is to make YOU a perfect singer. As long as you get a message you have a hope.
This channel is amazing. If I record my voice/exercises I use Melodyne to check how my actually pitch is. Melodyne analyses perfectly what you're singing. Is there a rule of thumb for the degree of deviation which you can call "normal". Let's say I sing a C. Melodyne tells me I am singing for example 20% under C or 39% above C. Just wondering.
Hey Sjaak, great question. I don't use melodyne myself, but it would be interesting to perform a test. I would say you can probably tell a difference when a singer is more than 5% flat or sharp
My problem singing pitch is hearing . I think im singing the note, record it, then feel like giving up.
just remember recordings aren't always accurate
Keep recording yourself and rather than giving up, hear what it is you don't like, research how to fix it. Practice, practice, practice. Try plugging 1 ear w your finger while you sing, it really helps you hear yourself better.

Subscribed. Nice will give this a try. I did a short song recording and was surprised to hear myself flat or sharp in some part- whilst during the recording I was so confident I was hitting the right notes. 😂 Until I heard the result.. then I realised I may not be hitting them at all 😝
Thanks for the sub! I have a mini-course on Sing on Pitch, here's the link:
courses.ramseyvoice.com/p/sing-on-pitch
3 words " u are great"
so are you, thanks for watching!
This helped me understand a lot of things I can do better to sing more in pitch. Thank you!
Elvis Presley sang in perfect 🤩 pitch and used his vibrato to bring him to the edge of pitch and back he was a master of pitch!!!
I just want to make a point to those fussy students who pick up on imperfections that the aim of the teacher is to make YOU a perfect singer. As long as you get a message you have a hope.
my range is c2 to c4 in chest and anything above that gets shaky fast since I don't really use head voice smoothly
Thanks
This channel is amazing. If I record my voice/exercises I use Melodyne to check how my actually pitch is. Melodyne analyses perfectly what you're singing. Is there a rule of thumb for the degree of deviation which you can call "normal". Let's say I sing a C. Melodyne tells me I am singing for example 20% under C or 39% above C. Just wondering.
Hey Sjaak, great question. I don't use melodyne myself, but it would be interesting to perform a test. I would say you can probably tell a difference when a singer is more than 5% flat or sharp
@@ramseyvoicestudio a test on RUclips would be great indeed.
He mention guitar and the office... IM SOLD!
