Hi, Ramsey -- Here's a method I've used to help dozens of long-time non singers realize they can warble. Instead of asking Mr. I Can't Sing to match a tone on piano, which sets them up for failure, I ask them to make a tone, any tone (I might have to model what I mean with my voice). When they make some sound, I say, "Good can you do it again and hold it for a few seconds?" When they do, I do my best to match their tone with my voice. Just matching one tone usually makes eyes light up. From there it's on to "Can you make another sound . . . then a different one?" Again, I may have to model sounding two different notes. Whatever they do, I match their tone. Laughter ensues, and so does the realization that Mr. Can't Sing actually can. What do you (and your gentle viewers) think of this method? Thanks for reading this.
@@pedro-ehlamaar8084 greetings, "tone deaf" is an interesting term that can have different meanings. Anyone who enjoys music and can tell one song from another isn't really, truly, deeply tone deaf. What most us who label ourselves as tone deaf have trouble with is just what you said, "Making a tone with our mouth that matches another tone." Often the trouble has a physical component -- we don't have the muscle control to make the matching tone. I am that way when it comes to whistling, and my brother, who is a fabulous whistler, has the problem when it comes to singing. When I try to whistle a tune, my tongue simply isn't agile enough to make the right note. It's not that I think I'm an OK whistler. As I whistle, I know I'm blowing out almost random sounds, even when attempting to whistle a familiar tune, like "Happy Birthday." A hopelessly tone deaf person can't tell one song from another. This is very rare, and I doubt anyone interested in music -- as you obviously are -- is really tone deaf. One way to check this is to noodle around on a piano. As you hit successive notes, see if any of the combinations familiar, like parts of a song. If that is the case, you aren't tone deaf. In fact, you are making music -- with your fingers. Again, the problem is physical, with your "mouth," not your ear. Another way of putting this is that anyone who thinks they are tone deaf because they sound "bad" when singing isn't, in fact, tone deaf. What they need is to improve their ability to make matching tones. If you have access to a piano type keyboard -- and there are several, free, online -- like this one www.onlinepianist.com/virtual-piano you can make progress and have fun by noodling around, making some tunes -- and then, when you feel like it, without the pressure of someone else commanding you and listening to you -- just make a tone and see if it matches. If it doesn't, no big deal. Just scootch around inside your mouth and make a different tone, and then another. Eventually you will get the knack of making matching tones. oh, by the way, in addition to the difference between whistling and singing and making music with fingers, some people who have trouble making tones with their mouths can be quite good as hummers. peace, keep on warbling -- dan
I think your use of the word tone is incorrect. You mean to say pitch. Tone is about resonance, timbre... Makes it more difficult to understand the lesson, and adds more confusion than should be. Remember you asked...

Hi... Firstly Love your videos, sooo to the point! It's like you know the best and fastest route to arrive at the destination. Anyways, You had mentioned some people can sing along well with the melody but find it difficult to pitch themselves to a chord. I supposed that was not explained in this video. Could you please address how to pitch yourself to chords too? Would be really helpful.
I have been doing the annoying exercises lol doing gug gug gug, nay nay nay etc in the car alone as not to annoy the hell out of anyone (except myself lol) and they've actually helped a lot with my voice cracking, but some days finding the right key or pitch can be challenging. I like to blame it on allergies but I feel like that is an excuse
I’m just now discovering singing pitch wise isn’t always immediate voice wise, I have a huge understanding of pitch and tone. My mind is just thinking too much. I’m willing to do the work and am.
something that might help others that I've just come to realized. So if you are like me you can hear the note pretty well but when you go to replicate it, it doesn't sound the greatest and it doesn't match. Something that I discovered for myself was that I would hear it with my ears then try to replicate it with my throat when is a big NO NO. So instead I started listening with my ears and keened in the way my body felt and the vibrations going through my body, then I tried to recreate that feeling of vibration and it was accurate almost every time. So yeah if you're having trouble maybe try listening and trying to recreate the vibrations you feel. Hope this helped anyone who may be struggling, also i just downloaded a free note checker app just to be safe.
Are there any good tools (DAW or apps) for measuring your pitch while you're singing, so you can see visually how flat / sharp you are on a recording? Sometimes I can hear a wobble with a reference note in the background but sometimes I really can't tell just by ear alone.
I have perfect pitch. Why do some have it & some not have it? As a trained classical pianist, I can always tell when an instrument is off key. I can also tell what key a song is in just by listening. I have a lot of experience in choir & in playing by ear as well as with written music. I think the ear is very important, for more than just notes. It helps with pedaling & with rhythm, too.
Subscribed. Nice will give this a try. I did a short song recording and was surprised to hear myself flat or sharp in some part- whilst during the recording I was so confident I was hitting the right notes. 😂 Until I heard the result.. then I realised I may not be hitting them at all 😝
This channel is amazing. If I record my voice/exercises I use Melodyne to check how my actually pitch is. Melodyne analyses perfectly what you're singing. Is there a rule of thumb for the degree of deviation which you can call "normal". Let's say I sing a C. Melodyne tells me I am singing for example 20% under C or 39% above C. Just wondering.
Hey Sjaak, great question. I don't use melodyne myself, but it would be interesting to perform a test. I would say you can probably tell a difference when a singer is more than 5% flat or sharp
Question , can males also do the females exercises if we can hit the notes the same way you do? Thank you so much for these videos, they help me so much
how does this translate to songs though? I can easily match notes on piano, but if I sing a song I'm all over the place. If I make a synth guide track for vocals or something and I have to match the notes, it goes perfectly well, but that's not something I can do live and finding the correct note myself just...doesn't work
I have seen many do that 5 tone thing, OVER AND OVER missing the notes consistently, without even knowing it. =/ Basically practicing wrong notes as a routine and making life more difficult =/
Hi Ramsey!! I watch a lot of your vids and it’s helped me a lot with not vocally straining. But as a teenage boy who goes through voice changes, I always struggle in the higher notes to match the pitch, and I end up going a bit lower because I feel like I’m either straining or I’m forcing the sound out when I do aim for higher notes, which is obviously not comfortable. Is there a way to be able to learn match the pitch of higher notes without straining them?
this lesson really got you that sub bro your amazing bro, this video spoke to me in so many ways im the type that sings a little flat and not that melodious but i will try everything you said and get back to you on my results before and after
Freddie Mercury did that on purpose. That slide up was no different than playing a note on a guitar 1/2 step lower then bending up to hit the note for that tension and release. For example you could just play a note on the 7th Fret but playing it on a lower fret then bending to pitch. He could have punched in that phrase even on 2" reel to reel if he did not like that take. He's not the only one who slides up and off pitches. This is not that common it seems with todays singers using Auto Tune.
Thank you, I was scrolling through the comments hoping that someone pulled him up on this... This was intentional, and not flat... it was a note down. This is the freedom you have of expression when the producer doesnt butcher your notes with auto tune.
lol I know it doesn't matter the specific Italian syllable but I was in Chorus in 7th-9th grade and sung lead tenor in my guys group which only consisted of 6 guys in 9th. When my teacher told us about solfege she taught us Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do instead. I just found it funny that despite still singing it different i kept on pitch. Side note I'm trying to figure out my singing issue. I thought it may have been pitch but i believe its more complicated than that. I think my issue is lack of vocal training acapella. I have perfect pitch but only when I hear the pitch.
I really appreciate your work and what you've been doing; you've really been helpful but am confused on something and it has really been difficult to discern what to do..... Is singing high note above the bridge:(C4,D4,E4,F,G,A,B,C) same with the same intensity of beltted notes but in a low volume? Because I tend to be confused how some singers can sing in the higher range above the bridge like it's nothing.... Are they sing in head voice/falsetto or are they sing in a head mix but in a low volume.... I really need clarity on this..I will appreciate if you reply and give me an exercise that will build my upper voice
Bands playing the song in key that you can sing in is also important. Most bands only play in the original singers key and not in the key one maybe able to sing best in.
It took me years to develop good pitch. Interesting, sometimes if I get high I can loose it. Can’t pick the pitch, so there must be a mental process of understanding what you are hearing and rationalising it. Confusion can throw you if you’re mind is not clear.
My problem singing pitch is hearing . I think im singing the note, record it, then feel like giving up.
just remember recordings aren't always accurate
Keep recording yourself and rather than giving up, hear what it is you don't like, research how to fix it. Practice, practice, practice. Try plugging 1 ear w your finger while you sing, it really helps you hear yourself better.
You can check out these things called hearfones, you hear yourself as you are singing. Pretty neat tool.

courses.ramseyvoice.com/p/sing-on-pitch
Movable do just makes way more sense for anyone who doesn’t have perfect pitch. You learn the intervals much faster.
This helped me understand a lot of things I can do better to sing more in pitch. Thank you!
You've never met me.
It would be great if you could make a video distinguishing between pitch, tone, rhythm, tune, so on.
@@ramseyvoicestudio a test on RUclips would be great indeed.
Ramsey please do a video on riffs and runs
I have one:

Question , can males also do the females exercises if we can hit the notes the same way you do?
Thank you so much for these videos, they help me so much
What about people who have lost their high-frequency hearing? Can they learn to sing on pitch across their entire range?
Thanks to you I was corrected on my classification. Here's a sub.
Thank you I needed this
Gee singing is my favourite!
how does this translate to songs though? I can easily match notes on piano, but if I sing a song I'm all over the place. If I make a synth guide track for vocals or something and I have to match the notes, it goes perfectly well, but that's not something I can do live and finding the correct note myself just...doesn't work
I have seen many do that 5 tone thing, OVER AND OVER missing the notes consistently, without even knowing it. =/
Basically practicing wrong notes as a routine and making life more difficult =/
can you please provide a music sheet for the notes used in these three vocal exercises, Mr Ramsey? Thank you.
Is there a way to be able to learn match the pitch of higher notes without straining them?
try this out:

Good teaching it's helping
this lesson really got you that sub bro your amazing bro, this video spoke to me in so many ways im the type that sings a little flat and not that melodious but i will try everything you said and get back to you on my results before and after
This really helped!
I watched this a second time and it kinda just clicked jn. Thank you!
Congrats Matt.
thanks, glad it was helpful
Excellent lesson 🎤🎼🎹
It was really amazing explainasion
Okay..I am following you
That's mean I am trusting you.
Also that wasn't just a little off pitch it was a different note sliding or bending to pitch.
yes, he had the chops to do what he wanted, no doubt
Thank you, I was scrolling through the comments hoping that someone pulled him up on this... This was intentional, and not flat... it was a note down. This is the freedom you have of expression when the producer doesnt butcher your notes with auto tune.
Thank you so much. Subscribed!
Amazing teacher
Wow what an amazing video🖤🖤
this guy is my boy he's very nice
Hi , am new in singing so am trying to learn how to sing on pitch.
I am going to be singing live in a week. I hope this helps
my range is c2 to c4 in chest and anything above that gets shaky fast since I don't really use head voice smoothly
He mention guitar and the office... IM SOLD!
lol I know it doesn't matter the specific Italian syllable but I was in Chorus in 7th-9th grade and sung lead tenor in my guys group which only consisted of 6 guys in 9th.
Exercises:
9:00 solfege do Re mi fa so fa mi re do.
11:20 Gee
13:09 Gug
actually the content is time stamped already in the description
@@ramseyvoicestudio ouh okay I didn't see that. Thanks!

So helpful
Thank you
Thanks for sharing
I’m a music student in college. As a percussionist I’m really struggling with singing pitches and everything related :(
I really appreciate your work and what you've been doing; you've really been helpful but am confused on something and it has really been difficult to discern what to do.....
I think you need practice working through the vocal break:
ramseyvoice.com/fix-vocal-break/
I love your content keep making them pls :)
Great help thanks
love the video i really do. just lost me at key of e. like i don't know what the key of e is or how to tell if i'm there
Know anyone that volunteers free voice lessons? If I don’t sing I die it’s more then just a hobbie to me it’s sooths my soul
Thank you so much
