Good work on this. I've been trying to spread the same "DCS doesn't require a second mortgage" message myself with my "DCS on basic hardware" video. In that video, I tested Core i7-4770K/GTX 760/16GB RAM and you know what? It was fine!
I have been along the same route. Got a hp z400 for free and put in a gtx1060 6gb, because it was the best 6 pin card i could get. Also using open track with a ps3 and a homemade led clip. Together with a x55 it is a solid setup. Also build my own rudder pedals, just waiting for a pro micro from China. Good video, you have a sub
I have an X58 system I love as well. X58 is definitely showing its age with DCS, unfortunately, even if it isn't with a lot of other modern games. I love your setup--do you have a build log somewhere?
3 years later, but that AST windows 3.1 machine you violated with the USB cable was serious blast from the past from my child. Played HOURS of Aces Over Europe on that bad boy.
Doing the lord's work! such an in depth tutorial and deep analysis on if you should even go for this build after all that, and what scenarios make the most sense. Very well done sir.
The RX480 is amazing, I run everything on high, including msaa x4, and only ssaa off, flat shadows and no bokeh ofcourse. I get always an average 70/80 fps, with min max of 40/120 with a 4th gen i5, the only bottleneck of my setup on heavy missions
@@samuelson76 DELL Precision T3500. Intel Xeon W3565 @3.2GHz, 12GB RAM, Nvidia Quadro FX 3800. It failed to run DCS. No surprises there. I cannot install my GTX 760 in the Precision as there are no free power cables to power the GPU. Even with cable adapters not sure if the PSU can take the load, and did not want to risk it. I use this PC for learning CAD and was unwilling to put a gaming GPU on it or risk ruining it. DCS does run on an old Q6600 with GTX 760 with 8 GB of RAM. Strange thing is GPU load is much much higher than CPU load and I do not know what that means. I am looking into upgrading to newer system with my old GTX 760 and 16GB of RAM minimum. Not going to pay insane price for a GPU due to mining demand.
@@drdonvito After trying DCS with a Q6600 running at 3 GHz with 8 GB of RAM and a GTX 760 I can say it works OK at least for simple missions and training. This way anyone can try and decide if they like it and want to invest in better hardware, or not. The GPU keeps running maxed out, so logically it should be the first component to upgrade, but with the used GPU market currently being what it is, I am not buying. I am considering another used Workstation PC with massive ammount of ECC RAM (64GB), a 3+GHz Xeon and my existing GTX 760. But I feeel that with the GTX 760 I would not be able to see much improvement. And ECC RAM is a bit slow too.So maybe it does not make sense. What do you think?
@@drdonvito Moved to i5-3470 with 12GB RAM while keeping my GTX 760. Was not impressed compared to the overclocked Q6600. I had massive FPS drops in ground bombing or busy environments. Upgraded to 32 GB RAM. Finally I was not running out of RAM anymore. Then replaced GPU with RTX 2060 I found in really good price. This does not help much with FPS drops in busy DCS environment. Then upgraded CPU to i5-3570k. Noticecable difference in FPS for sure. Then did a mild overclock at ~4GHz. I have been using a cheap SATA SSD all this time. It's an OKish setup for DCS but I would say that my biggest dissapointment is the loading times. Maybe its the cheap SATA SSD. I am playing at 1920x1200 60Hz (max resolution & refresh rate of my monitor). At this stage it's safe to say that low resolution does require a very fast CPU. And moving to something more modern with 32GB of RAM minimum and PCIe NVME would make sense. I did upgrade my T3500 with 24GB of RAM at 1600MHz, but did not bother swapping PSUs and GPUs in order to try DCS in the T3500. The CPU single core performance score is much worse compared to the i5-3570k, so it did not make any sense. But I am curious I admit.
You know, i have been getting more and more intrigued by this game but reading through a lot of the facebook groups, discord etc. I never even bothered to try it. Even purchased an xbox one s for MSFS 2020 since it was cheaper than upgrading. Anyway, installed DCS world and it runs fine on low settings on my ancient a10-7850k, 16 gig of ram and r7 360 graphics card. Am tempted to do this as it costs significantly less than a current gen console and should be able to turn up the graphics a bit more. Will certainly be more than enough to run the game for long enough to be able to save to get something of a higher spec (and turn up the graphical settings even more) in a couple of years. Thank you so much for the video.
Great video! You could even save some more money by ordering the Thurstmaster T-flight HOTAS (which I've found to be satisfactory, and which has a few more stick buttons) and by using an Aruco headtracking setup for just the price of an old baseball cap I would probably put those extra savings towards a bit bigger of a monitor lol Thanks for your hard work!

The irony is i got interested in DCS while sourcing for a HOTAS for Star Wars Squadrons. I did not got into flight-sims out of the blue, I have been a hardcore PC gamer (mostly FPS games) for the past 20 years and already have a gaming PC. I have a Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS on order (my previous HOTAS was the Saitek X-52 Pro which i sold many years ago) after getting my hands initially wet by purchasing the DCS F-16C Viper & the Persian Gulf map. By now I also have the P-47D warbird + the Syria and Channel maps. My next purchase in mind was either rudder pedals or TrackIR but I think i'm going for the TrackIR. Back in the 90s it was difficult to get into PC flight-sims even if you have a fairly good midrange PC, I remember JSF, Falcon 4.0, AH-64 Apache Longbow etc. Back to the future, DCS World is a total game changer and Im glad i found it. Truly immersive life-like flightsim with realistic graphics. This is an expensive hobby alright.

Great video and analysis! Here's the system I'm currently using to fly DCS. I've had the CPU\MB since 2011, added the GPU a couple years ago and another 16GB RAM this year. i7-2600K 3.4GHz (overclocked to 4.2GHz) |~| MSI-P67A-GD65 |~| 32GB DDR3-1600 Corsair RAM |~| NV-GeForce GTX 1060 3GB (overclocked) |~| 2TB SSD space available. After I decided to go "ALL IN" during ED's Stay at Home sale last Spring, I was lucky enough to get a Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS Flight Pack (Stick, Throttle, Pedals) for $200 before the prices sky-rocketed. :) Found a great head-tracker with the The Puck IR from Grass Monkey Simulations for $65. It doesn't run well when settings are maxed but I've configured it now so that I can't average around 60FPS, (still trying to figure out what settings would be the best though). I've wondered if added a better video card would be worth it or just get a new CPU\MB\GPU, since my system is old enough already. I'd be up for some pointers on how to maximize my system, as it is now, if you have some. Thanks for the video and keep posting them, they are helpful more than you know.
still the goto video....ive got every thing else just aiming for the PC now, thanks ill reference from your great work and try and add 2.5 yrs to it.. Thanks again
Yep, I started on an OLD i7 2600k, gtx660 and a saitek x52pro. Far too many people in the DCS community state you NEED a certain spec of pc component and they are just not entirely correct. You can have great fun enjoying DCS on these types of pc. Yes it's not the immersion of VR etc but it's still fun.
Not to mention that the 2600k is STILL relevant in 2021. That is a monster of a processor and its lack of modern instruction sets is really the only thing that is holding it back.
Don’t play DCS but I love seeing benchmarks of stuff with it. This video is great. Eagle Dynamics just announced that they’re updating the engine to be more multithreaded so I wonder how this PC would do with that then.
Yessir, MT just came out and even though its a testing phase i can already tell the diffrence! Is really great and im quite hopefull what the future will bring to this sim^^
bruv that blue saitek was my primary for soooooooo many years growing up. Ran mine into the ground. AFAIK you went further than most regreasing it -- I did the zip-ties, but I think I went a little further than you did as far as how much tension I removed -- but the biggest problem with that stick is the lack of weight on the base. It demands to be bolted to the surface of a table. Also watch out for the grip adhesives to wear out quickly. I miss the rotary knobs on the throttle the most. The stick was cool, but the spring on the pinky trigger was wonky and it squeaked for as long as I can remember. ALL OF THAT SAID it was a massive improvement from whatever garbage stick I was playing MSCFS 2 at the time
Great video, can you list the parts in the description? I would still watch the video but don't have to write it down etc and is easy to do! Thanks for the recs!
So I’ve got a very respectful PC. 12th Gen i5 with a GeForce RTX 3050 8G, with 16 gigs of Ram becauss im running a micro atx ASUS motherboard. All I need is a HOTAS. I’m also good in the tracking department because I have a VR headset! God I’m so excited to delve 1000s of hours of my life into this
Fuck yes! Looks like I have learned how I can finally get into DCS, EFT, etc. Without going broke😅 Good shit bro! Thank you! Although I'm sure I'll have to tack on a couple hundred or more between June 2022 prices and Canadian Dollars... But still good deals!
Great video dude! i always try to help out new dcs pilots that they shouldnt buy the top notch super expensive stuff for a start ... a logi 3d pro is a good start stick :) anyway great video dude keep it up ;)
Thanks for the feedback Nubs... I'm going to have a video soon where I benchmark half a dozen sub-200 dollar video cards--this should be another noob friendly guide :-)
I'm been using thrustmaster t flight x for 3 years now and no issue at all, also I have bought delan clip because is cheaper option and it works very well, can't compare with trackir 5 because I have never used that one but for 50 euros I have a solid tracker with no lag or problems, all this configuration is worth 100 euro and is not that bad
Wow this video just made me realise I can actually afford to play these awesome games with my friends without having to use dark magic to transport myself to an alternate universe where money does grow on trees.
Hold up I’m at the beginning and what’s this pic gonna be running off of an apple and two peas? But pretty rad this is actually really helpful the only reason I’m here though is the joystick and throttle cause I already got a quest for head tracking , computer stuff etc
Thanks! I'm 57, know NOTHING about video games. I literally haven't played them since TRON arcade back in the 80s! I was busy! You see I was a real pilot for the last 32 years. I was Black Hawk pilot and then spent 27 yrs as an airline pilot. I recently retired early and while I don't miss airline flying, this stuff interest me. But, it is overwhelming! I wouldn't know a good graphics card from a bad one and am equally ignorant on how joysticks/throttles/pedals connect and you program all the buttons. Do you have a series on things like this for guys like me?
About the no ir track - I’m using open track with my phone via wireless connection through my router No latency It keeps track of my face really good And no shift whatsoever About the joystick Firstly I had the Logitech 3r extreme which was on the video as well But I wasn’t satisfied with it’s precision So I bought Xbox controller elite with extra buttons on the back Serves me very well in terms of precision and ability to bind many actions that I need in a F18C
Great video & I appreciate you showing a novice/enthusiast like me how I can easily try DCS out before taking the plunge. I know this video is 2yrs old now, any recommendations on a different PC that I should look for at this time? I appreciate all advice as I’m not a PC builder & not overly savvy with the specs of all the components. Thanks!
Funny, my highlight was seeing you use the same knife i have to open the box haha. Nice pocket utility knife that one. Id love to play dcs but alas i have no PC and not really a budget unfortunately, kids come first. Im not sure id be able to build a pc as window device mangler and me dont have a great relationship.
I’ve had cheap shit from the start starting back in 2008 with Black Shark and then over the years buying more stuff like rudder pedals, VKB joystick, VR, JetSeat and building a simple simpit. Now I can say I have a truly enjoyable experience and looking back I’m thinking how could I even fly without all that?! But that’s just me.
My setup is a just a tad more expensive. I picked up a hp z620 dual cpu machine at a bargain price. The dual cpu part is redundant as DCS and most other games doesn't know it exists though, Doom however does utilize the second cpu! All 32 threads! I got a pair of cheap e5-2590's anyway it had 48gb quad channel memory at 1333mhz an ssd and an rx 590 second hand. I have an x52 hotas which is ok. It works really well. I have a 75hz monitor. When flying really low over a big city I will notice it drop lower than 75 fps (msaa 2x) but even on multiplayer its marginally worse but really very acceptable. One day I will upgrade as I dip my toes into VR but I'm in no rush at the moment.
I built a dual CPU system out of the T3600's big brother, the T5600, just for funsies--32 threads of madness. Yes--some games like Doom and GTAV absolutely eat up all those threads, but DCS couldn't care less! Neat rig you built though!
There's a subscription service called Geforce Now made by NVIDIA and DCS is in the process of getting added to it. You can play it right now but you have to install it every session. I haven't tried it with VR or track IR with the joysticks since i'm poor but it works fine and you can play at 60 fps so you dont have to spend a bunch of money on a PC.
Criminally low view for such a great video. This probably took a ton of time and research. From a fellow pc builder, I gotta say you really hit it out of the park.

I miss the rotary knobs on the throttle the most. The stick was cool, but the spring on the pinky trigger was wonky and it squeaked for as long as I can remember. ALL OF THAT SAID it was a massive improvement from whatever garbage stick I was playing MSCFS 2 at the time
CFS2! Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time...
I would love to see an update for 2023. I want to dip my toes into DCS but struggle with the pc part.
Great video dude! i always try to help out new dcs pilots that they shouldnt buy the top notch super expensive stuff for a start ... a logi 3d pro is a good start stick :)
anyway great video dude keep it up ;)
Thanks for the feedback Nubs...
You are the man! Thank you very much.
Can u upload a vid of u actually building the pc I mean just installing the ssd and harddrive
Wow this video just made me realise I can actually afford to play these awesome games with my friends without having to use dark magic to transport myself to an alternate universe where money does grow on trees.
Although I still have no real way to make money, being under the legal age for a job in Britain.
Hold up I’m at the beginning and what’s this pic gonna be running off of an apple and two peas? But pretty rad this is actually really helpful the only reason I’m here though is the joystick and throttle cause I already got a quest for head tracking , computer stuff etc
I'm not gonna lie, I legit laughed when the picture of Karl Marx floated in the background
Do you have a series on things like this for guys like me?
id love for you to give that set up to me
i cant i agine how much fun you must have playing that game like JEEZUZ!
Hey, dunno if you have one already, but a guide on how to make that diy head tracking would be awesome ! :)
You're into retrowave/synthwave.
My man! 💜
At 12:08 u have some very intresting tabs open
WTF
About the no ir track -
I’m using open track with my phone via wireless connection through my router
No latency
It keeps track of my face really good
And no shift whatsoever
About the joystick
Firstly I had the Logitech 3r extreme which was on the video as well
But I wasn’t satisfied with it’s precision
So I bought Xbox controller elite with extra buttons on the back
Serves me very well in terms of precision and ability to bind many actions that I need in a F18C
Great video!!
Thanks!
underatted video nice job!
The real budget build
Underated fr!
You are sooooo underrated
I just came here to see how to set up a joystick with minimal fuss. Needless to say, I did not think to put it between my mouse and keyboard.
Thanks!
Ayo those chrome tabs at 2:15 😂
You might have saved my life :)
7:47 you forgot a Windows license lol
I am getting a x56 and I know it's not the best but BUTTONS AND SWITCHES FOR LIFE
This is just what I needed. Thank you very much. Any changes you would make in 2023?
you are so underrated
what a great video, am gonna save that till i test my laptop capability to run all that lol
i subbed, it was great, thats all i can say
Funny, my highlight was seeing you use the same knife i have to open the box haha. Nice pocket utility knife that one. Id love to play dcs but alas i have no PC and not really a budget unfortunately, kids come first. Im not sure id be able to build a pc as window device mangler and me dont have a great relationship.
Did someone notice 2:11 like 100 PH tabs opened? xD

For head tracking check out Aruco marker, it's a head tracker with no assembly, cables, works well in dim light, costs 0 pesos (if you have camera).
Thanks man
AItrack + opentrack works really well with PS3 camera without needing to modify it.
Great video. I’m lost on picking out a PC to get into DCS and MSFS. Is there a solid off the shelf PC you could recommend ~$1,000?
Gtx 1660 super builds
Ayyyy a REALLY good head tracker is smoothtrack on the phone. Its great and only 10 bucks
im not the only one who noticed the pornhub tabs at the top
Nice video very helpful. But does no one notice his tabs at 3:07
There's a subscription service called Geforce Now made by NVIDIA and DCS is in the process of getting added to it. You can play it right now but you have to install it every session. I haven't tried it with VR or track IR with the joysticks since i'm poor but it works fine and you can play at 60 fps so you dont have to spend a bunch of money on a PC.
