Ward Carroll getting more involved with DCS is such an exciting thing for the community. The more credible guys get into it and make videos about it, the more fun it becomes for us all.
It has finally come full circle. I stumbled upon this channel by looking for dogfighting tips when I first got into DCS. Still here for all the cool stuff he shares
Ward, please think about doing some DCS live events with the audience together, it will be great just taking off from a carrier, fly formation and goes back.

I work in IT , and have loved aviation and sims since i was a kid. This video was very informative and useful . Especially the USB part of it , ALOT of people miss that.

Hey Mooch. I've just listened to the Air Combat Sim episode with you and Casmo. I know it took you some time to learn the ropes of DCS. You are methodical and do it in a serious way. And I like that. Have (serious) fun with it!
I think a lot of people waited for this :) Great stuff and as always looking for your awesome content! Greetings from a German armchair pilot. Edit: Btw, I'm team VR. Resolution is worse obviously but the immersion outweighs that tenfold for me. Also tanking and stuff is so much easier :) I literally couldn't fly DCS on a 2D screen again, ever. But it might not be for everyone for multiple reasons, I get that.
Same and I was raised on old school DOS flightsims my favorite being Gunship 2000. When I see footage from that stuff now I cringe. Even a 4k monitor to me feels like tunnel vision. Full disclosure never tried a track IR because I already had my Oculus Quest 2 ready to go. Now I don't think I could go back to 2d even if I had to, like if my VR broke or something.
@@papawushutv Exactly, at first I switched to 2D for convenience when trying something out in the mission editor or learning a new module. But even for that I stay in VR now because I just can't ;)
I recently made the jump to the reverb g2 and the resolution is much better. It's still not as good as track IR on max settings, but I'd rather have good graphics and immersion than great graphics and 2d. With a great gpu and cpu you can get high res and 60+fps on the supercarrier in VR
Those on here that love DCS and know of Growling Sidewinder's channel, wouldn't you love to see Ward and GS do videos together. Those two would be unbeatable in a couple of F-14D's!
@@spryderplays5456 yeah I have a Valve Index and with enough resolution it's quite ok. My first headset was a HTV Vive and reading labels especially in the F-14 was nearly impossible. No issue in the Valve Index. But you need quite a beefy PC considering how "well" DCS is optimized for VR
Since seeing Top Gun 2, I've fallen back in love with fighters and their pilots all over again, which is kind of crazy considering I am pretty vehemently anti-war, but they're just so damn magnificent. Anyways, I've been getting into DCS videos, particularly Growling Sidewinder's channel. When I fully realized the steep learning curve and amount of "homework" learning your aircraft this sim demands to become proficient, I was blown away at the dudes skill in multiple aircraft. I hope to see some Mooch v. GS dogfights in the near future. Would make for some excellent viewing.
Ward, please keep us updated with your new set up (it's really nice). Maybe in the future you can work in a F-14 tutorial for all of us who loves aviation.
I've been waiting for this!!! I don't play DCS yet, but I love watching missions and tutorials. Have always thought it would be awesome to see Mooch flying missions in DCS, and here we are almost there!!!! Awesome video as always!!!!👍😊💥💥💥

Thanks Ward... I'm 77 years old and was a pilot in the Navy in the 60's. I flew the A4, so your video inspired me to see if I can fly the F14 using DCS. Who says old dogs can't learn new tricks...call the ball

Mr. Ward Carol sir. Being an aviation wrench I had to stop your video to check on your rudder pedal mounting. I'm pleased that you knew the old adage that all bolts point down and out. You did the mounting correctly as far as my eyes can see. I was looking to see if you mounted the bolts top down versus nuts up. Keep up the fantastic work. Live well, long, and prosper.
I had to do a double take. I have tons of DCS vids in my feed and to see one with Ward's name attached to it definitely caused some confusion. This is amazing! So stoked that you fly in DCS as well!

Maybe one day I'll get you into a helicopter 😁 Edit: A couple eventual recommendations: A stick extension will give you more precise control, and the damper mod for your pedals will make them feel even better than they do now. (Both of these are especially valuable in helicopters hahaha)
THANK YOU! I wanted to fly since birth, my bedroom was all posters of aircraft growing up. At 16 I drove myself down to the local airport and paid for a 30 min flight in the smallest two seater there. But from head to toe my body rejected how it felt to fly... the bug did not bite me, without a doubt, I wasn't a pilot. Now, I can get a little bit of that dream back, awesome! I am a student pilot in a university and I love Dcs so much. It feels like it’s improving my hand skills and very fun to perform air combat with the f-16.
Welcome to the rabbit hole “Mooch”! Yeah, VR, although not perfect it is getting better. OpenXR eliminates SteamVR, and is giving VR a much clearer picture. Most experienced flyers in DCS have used Trackir and have moved to VR (not Tricker…lol). There are a lot of great people in DCS, but as Toby Keith’s song “I Love This Bar” describes, this is still the Internet…Just have fun reliving your real life experiences now as an front seat Arrow Slinger! Oh, and teach Jester a few things too…lol
I started using the Ocular Rift-S with DCS and it is amazing, next is a motion platform for the "seat feel". Flying with the Rift, being able to turn your head and look around sure makes formation flying and target alignment very easy.

Thank you for this video in 2024. I never got into dcs in the past, and then i finally said, "Let me revisit it, and now im obsessed trying to lean the whole thing large learning curve." Comming from msfs not the flying the weapon systems. Not giving up.
Great review - we will share it with our customers who are planning on building a combat flight sim. One comment from our side (Volair Sim) - you may want to use the center stick plate (that came with your cockpit) for your center stick support. It is smaller and rounder which should provide a much better fit around your legs. The plate you have on currently is the side mount plate that is rectangular and larger.
A few years ago I made my own Track IR system using a webcam, spent film, and a couple of Infrared LEDs. I got it to work on FSX but was kind of a PITA. This stuff has come a long way. Awesome rig you have there.

Just a tip, Ward. If you usually wear your cap while flying, there is absolutely no perceivable difference between the Trackclip Pro and the usual reflective clip if you don't have any lighting issues. Except it's wireless. Also, there are now options out there that just tracks your face and don't require a clip at all, like the Aimxy head tracker. Looking forward to seeing you fly DCS in the future!

Back in the day, as a game dev, Thrustmaster sent me two massive boxes of stuff... flight sticks, yokes, pedals, thrusts, you name it (for the Mac, no less.) Really good quality. Highly recommended.
You are an F 14 guy...but don't forget the warbirds! Just taxying the Spitfire took me 2 weeks to get to the runway! Then the P 51 and the North American team got it just about perfect. Welcome aboard Sir! Oh, the advice about the addition of an Uninterruptible Power Supply is gold.
Just bought the F-14 in DCS few weeks ago while in sale. Great module, was defintly orth its money. Just need to improve my personal flight skills to get its potential unleashed!
I have a fairly old PC (16GB ram DDR3), no Track IR/VR and I use an X-52 PRO from 2007 plus pedals from a Thrustmaster steering wheel. Still does the job pretty well :D
I'm looking forward to a time when mere mortals can fly co-cockpit (online) as Ward's RIO! What better "training aid" than a real-life RIO acting as "nose-gunner" coaching the newbie at the craft, in situations that can be repeated until mastered? Well, done, Ward, I've been waiting for this to eventuate. Glad you're promoting ThrustMaster. I've been a customer of theirs since the early 1990's!
Thanks so much for this video Ward! I have a Volaire SIM pit as well and I could never find any good Rudder pedals that fit in it. But I think I might give those thrustmaster pedals a try with your mod! Thanks again. Hope it works!
Cool rig, I’m already thinking about that screen. A piece of software I find useful with the F14 is VoiceAttack to communicate with the RIO. It can run a macro from a voice command so, for example, if I say TACAN or ILS it flips all the switches and sets it all up.
Great rig, Ward! Glad to have you on board as an ambassador for DCS World! Keep the DCS clips coming! By the way, the G9 is also one of my latest additions, really nice, when you use it in combination with a headtracker. In terms of VR I can say that it convinced me when I changed to a 2x 4K resolution (Pimax 8KX). Needs a RTX 3090 to be smooth but that's the visual sound barrier to breach in order to solve the readability issues I had before with other headsets. I guess VR will definitely be a thing in just a few years but it's just not there yet.
DCS just keeps blowing my mind. I went with the monster tech flight chair, love it but I like the look of the set up for the monitor and pedals. I've never flown a fighter but I have a lapsed CPL with a group 1 IFR, also been to a couple full motion sims for training and DCS is only missing the seat of the pants feeling that they give you. Its incredible that they have made the level of immersion that they offer on a PC. Ward, given that your a real world f14 guy, perhaps some tutorials on F14 radar, weapons and countermeasures? Once you master the front seat to your satisfaction that is! Cheers!
Its nice to see you getting more invested in DCS and I look forward to some RIO (or other) tutorials from you. I feel like I should mention that your rig is "a bit" more than what you need for DCS. People have had a lot of fun with a lot less rig than what you have set up. Also important to note is that the client software is completely free (with 2 aircraft you may or may not be excited about) and every aircraft module can be "free trialed" for two weeks every six months. Finally, if the cost of the modules is too high I would suggest looking at the A4E community mod which is free and almost indistinguishable from fully paid modules. DCS can become frightfully expensive but equally true is that it doesn't have to cost that much if you already have a reasonable gaming computer.
Love your content Mooch. Just finished Punks War audiobook. Very good. I’d recommend taking that base plate off the bottom of your flight stick, and attaching it directly to your pit. It can’t be comfortable having that giant metal plate in your way. Keep the video coming please..!

Outstanding Ward. You’ve made some good choices. Still, to get the best experience in VR, you’ll want to upgrade that display adapter to a 3080 or better. That will put you “in” the Tomcat. As far as the resolution, a better GPU will allow you to run at higher res, and you get adept at turning your head instead of your eyeballs, due to the sharpest part of the image is in the center of each eyepiece. Another big part of that is getting prescription lens inserts for your VR goggles. Helps sharpen up the image remarkably. Seems like a hassle, but your improved depth perception gives you an advantage while in the grove or trying to plug-in to the basket. Rock on!
@@santiagopalacios3313 I'm not sure, because I've never owned a 3070. If you don't fly MSFS 2020, a 3070 will probably do. But I'm frequently glad that I have a 3080, and wish that it was a 3090. Especially when flying some of the excellent campaigns from Baltic Dragon and Reflected. BTW, the Reflected "Fear the Bones" (Tomcat) and "Paradise Lost" (Huey) campaigns are some of the finest single player simulation experiences that I have ever had in almost 3 decades of flying combat flight sims.
I've been playing dcs almost same setup. i don't have the pit but i have same monitor. i couldn't get used to track ir systems and reverted back to VR headset. i love it. i'm still learning how to fly and engage. i've got the air to air mostly down on the f-16 and f-14 (but i have to use the AI rio) hopefully i'll see you arround.
That is an amazing set up sir. If I might make a small suggestion though. I see you are using a standard power strip. I would recommend going to a full UPS back up with surge protection. It’s a good thing to have to protect your system against power surges and blackouts.
Be advised that the batteries in UPS units do wear out after a couple of years. If the UPS has a dead battery, the smallest power blip will shut down your computer. (New batteries are available online.)
second this, that's a lot of expensive gear. don't cheap out on the UPS either. this kind of setup begs for a short rack too. hide all that cabling etc. dual rackmount ups and dual redundant power supplies.
UPs is a bit overkill for a gaming system as uptime during power outages is not a priority, a simple surge protected power strip will suffice to protect the components.
Please post DCS content in the RIO role. Would be an awesome learning experience to geek out on and see more of the task in that position "first hand" so to speak. Glad to see you in DCS.

"Mover" didn't get along with Track-IR... he prefers VR. I've been using VR since long before Oculus era and wouldn't go anywhere without it. :)

Back in the day, as a game dev, Thrustmaster sent me two massive boxes of stuff... flight sticks, yokes, pedals, thrusts, you name it (for the Mac, no less.) Really good quality. Highly recommended.

You are an F 14 guy...but don't forget the warbirds! Just taxying the Spitfire took me 2 weeks to get to the runway! Then the P 51 and the North American team got it just about perfect. Welcome aboard Sir! Oh, the advice about the addition of an Uninterruptible Power Supply is gold.

Just bought the F-14 in DCS few weeks ago while in sale. Great module, was defintly orth its money. Just need to improve my personal flight skills to get its potential unleashed!

I have a fairly old PC (16GB ram DDR3), no Track IR/VR and I use an X-52 PRO from 2007 plus pedals from a Thrustmaster steering wheel. Still does the job pretty well :D

Thanks so much for this video Ward! I have a Volaire SIM pit as well and I could never find any good Rudder pedals that fit in it. But I think I might give those thrustmaster pedals a try with your mod! Thanks again. Hope it works!

Cool rig, I’m already thinking about that screen. A piece of software I find useful with the F14 is VoiceAttack to communicate with the RIO. It can run a macro from a voice command so, for example, if I say TACAN or ILS it flips all the switches and sets it all up.
Great rig, Ward! Glad to have you on board as an ambassador for DCS World! Keep the DCS clips coming! By the way, the G9 is also one of my latest additions, really nice, when you use it in combination with a headtracker. In terms of VR I can say that it convinced me when I changed to a 2x 4K resolution (Pimax 8KX). Needs a RTX 3090 to be smooth but that's the visual sound barrier to breach in order to solve the readability issues I had before with other headsets. I guess VR will definitely be a thing in just a few years but it's just not there yet.
The former avionics maintainer in me saw the cable management behind your computer and about hand an anuerysm.

DCS just keeps blowing my mind. I went with the monster tech flight chair, love it but I like the look of the set up for the monitor and pedals. I've never flown a fighter but I have a lapsed CPL with a group 1 IFR, also been to a couple full motion sims for training and DCS is only missing the seat of the pants feeling that they give you. Its incredible that they have made the level of immersion that they offer on a PC. Ward, given that your a real world f14 guy, perhaps some tutorials on F14 radar, weapons and countermeasures? Once you master the front seat to your satisfaction that is! Cheers!

Its nice to see you getting more invested in DCS and I look forward to some RIO (or other) tutorials from you. I feel like I should mention that your rig is "a bit" more than what you need for DCS. People have had a lot of fun with a lot less rig than what you have set up. Also important to note is that the client software is completely free (with 2 aircraft you may or may not be excited about) and every aircraft module can be "free trialed" for two weeks every six months. Finally, if the cost of the modules is too high I would suggest looking at the A4E community mod which is free and almost indistinguishable from fully paid modules. DCS can become frightfully expensive but equally true is that it doesn't have to cost that much if you already have a reasonable gaming computer.
Love your content Mooch. Just finished Punks War audiobook. Very good. I’d recommend taking that base plate off the bottom of your flight stick, and attaching it directly to your pit. It can’t be comfortable having that giant metal plate in your way. Keep the video coming please..!

Outstanding Ward. You’ve made some good choices. Still, to get the best experience in VR, you’ll want to upgrade that display adapter to a 3080 or better. That will put you “in” the Tomcat. As far as the resolution, a better GPU will allow you to run at higher res, and you get adept at turning your head instead of your eyeballs, due to the sharpest part of the image is in the center of each eyepiece. Another big part of that is getting prescription lens inserts for your VR goggles. Helps sharpen up the image remarkably. Seems like a hassle, but your improved depth perception gives you an advantage while in the grove or trying to plug-in to the basket. Rock on!

@@santiagopalacios3313 I'm not sure, because I've never owned a 3070. If you don't fly MSFS 2020, a 3070 will probably do. But I'm frequently glad that I have a 3080, and wish that it was a 3090. Especially when flying some of the excellent campaigns from Baltic Dragon and Reflected. BTW, the Reflected "Fear the Bones" (Tomcat) and "Paradise Lost" (Huey) campaigns are some of the finest single player simulation experiences that I have ever had in almost 3 decades of flying combat flight sims.

I've been playing dcs almost same setup. i don't have the pit but i have same monitor. i couldn't get used to track ir systems and reverted back to VR headset. i love it. i'm still learning how to fly and engage. i've got the air to air mostly down on the f-16 and f-14 (but i have to use the AI rio) hopefully i'll see you arround.

That is an amazing set up sir. If I might make a small suggestion though. I see you are using a standard power strip. I would recommend going to a full UPS back up with surge protection. It’s a good thing to have to protect your system against power surges and blackouts.
Be advised that the batteries in UPS units do wear out after a couple of years. If the UPS has a dead battery, the smallest power blip will shut down your computer. (New batteries are available online.)
second this, that's a lot of expensive gear. don't cheap out on the UPS either. this kind of setup begs for a short rack too. hide all that cabling etc. dual rackmount ups and dual redundant power supplies.
A very good suggestion.
UPs is a bit overkill for a gaming system as uptime during power outages is not a priority, a simple surge protected power strip will suffice to protect the components.
