Class 60 starts with an Epic noise at Patchway

  • An early morning at Patchway saw a DB Class 60 halting at Patchway near Bristol for a driver change en-route from Margam to Theale leading to quite a start up on the resumption of the journey. With most of the tank wagons still on the incline between Pilning and Patchway and the slippery conditions the Class 60 handles the task impressively!
In addition, an interesting IEP movement, working wrong line (although technically both roads are bi-directional lines) on a empty stock move from Stoke Gifford to Bath Spa.

What a beast. I saw my first 60 last week in the metal, I wasn't sure I'd ever get to see one - it made the ground shake. Awesome bit of kit.

Compared to other British diesels like the 37 and 47, the 60 isn't very loud when accelerating but it does have a cool menacing rumble to it.

The Class 60 sounds more like a Dash 8-40C but less aggressive sounding when powering up. Had these been fitted with the GE 7FDL16 power units like the Dash 8/9's. They would be even louder than a Class 56 on full pelt. Still. I do love these Class 60's and I am happy hear more of them are coming back into service.

Love the comments about the noise and 'epic' nature. Obviously, commentators know nothing of how a 60 demolishes any competition for starting a heavy train, the computer out foxes anything GM and GE have. Still the best and most efficient.

I do love the rumble and the chug of the Class 60's.

Er what noise 😂.ive heard louder milk floats !they were fitted with very large exhaust silencer which killed 90%of the sound .if you want an idea what they really sound like the 37901-4were fitted with a 8 cyl version of this merlees engine and the silencing was removed

    Hi Richard,

Hello Richard, it's been a while since we've heard from you but you are back with a beauty. I was wondering if the 60 was going to move at all. The thing I kept looking at though was the rain. We are so desperate for rain here. There has only been 30 mm since early April and the forests are parched and burning, we're in a mess and rain is the prescription but there's none in the forecast. I trust all is well with you?
    Regards, David.

Interesting. First the heave, and then it looked like a stall but it heaved again, and he was on his way

Proper reporting headcode for the Margam to Theale loaded tanks is 6A11 if you wanted to change your caption

Doesn't have that amazing scream of a 56 or the rumble of a 68 it also doesn't give the same sense of power as a 70 so pretty good but not the best

That is the thing about a class 60 , it doesn't need to scream or shout, it uses electrikery to do it's thing. Far better to work on than any v engine, still superior to any diesel loco yet to be built for this country. Just like the last steam loco BR designed they got it right but no one appreciates what they are capable of doing when looked after properly .
