I wish I could hear a fully loaded Deltic accelerating south through Low Fell from Newcastle again. There was a service that headed down south every night and that was the soundtrack of my childhood. Running them on low power, or revving them for a few seconds isn't the same as 5 minutes of full power from Gateshead to Lamesley yard and on towards Durham. You need both engines running to get the beats from them being slightly out of sync.
The noise from the Deltic is truly unique. In my 60's I have travelled thousands of miles behind these iconic locomotives, and loved every one of them. I even did the 'Night Aberdonian' back in the day with Deltic haulage from EDB to KGX. Great video.
Just got home from this tour and feel so lucky to have these memories. Engines on display through the windows at night - doesn’t get much better for me. They must have been so proud, and so am I!
I love these old grunters, I miss the old days when cars were actually nice and comfy, with cabins and ash trays and real light bulbs. And them trains ran thru ice and snow no matter what! Sometimes the doors were frozen and needed some persuasion, so be it. Only in summertime it wasn´t so nice because opening the windows would only do so much but at least they were to open! Todays ac´s are nice- when they work and it isn´t too hot for them. Then they go "No, thanks" and we are left to rot in them ovens. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, wish Y´all the best
Fantastic! I got to see this as i passed through York en-route to Newcastle from Kings cross 24th November 23. It was like rewinding the clock back to 1981 great times spent in my youth.
i love how old engines bring alot of attention cause they had more style back then in my opinion same with steam engines they where way better than the modern trains of today
reminded me .met dad aged young8/9 ish(a guard king x)arrived on his train cadged a lift to Finsbury pk yard on a backwards King George 5,he clocked out and got a lift back on a Deltic ,
I worked at Wimbledon TMD for 5 years as a train engineer and we had a wheel lathe there. That meant we got in many visiting locos, coaches AND PRESERVED Deltics to have wheels skimmed ( this is done with the wheels still on the train they just drive over the lathe pit and each wheel is turned by itself). KOYLI always sounded beautiful. Those Napier Deltics purring away. My late father was on the team that put in the witing foe the prototype DELTIC and later production ones. So whenever I see one I am reminded of him. The old Whistlers were awesome as well I just wish they had retained some as station pilots like they have done with the mighty 37's I travelled many times on the ECML behind Deltics in service and at 100 MPH they sound AWESOME. EEEURGH 66 YINGER awful piece of rubbish sounds like a blender
I am old enough to travel behind these when in regular service. I have been in york station with a north bound and south bound deltic at the same time , now that is thunderous .
Been on all the deltics in the driving cabs and worked with them all in my job. Moving at speed not just watching and yes I have never felt a power push when both engines are running could not use them on freight as to powerful.
Yes it was but very noisy I spent 25 years as a freight guard so I would act as the second man and was there to couple up or uncouple the train from the engine. I was based at Holbeck in Leeds so all the different locomotives would come on for fuel and service.
hello train video 2023 fun fact I was watching this same video that came out on the 26 of November 2023 and I was watching this video live on York railcam and I did see my favourite class 66 numbered class 66413 and I do like the horn on class 66413 when she tooted her horn at 9:51
The noise of solo RSG departing north with vigour (before returning to connect with it's coaches) takes me back to Sunday evenings in the 1970's when I'd regularly catch a Deltic hauled service to Newcastle......before locals living near the track complained and drivers were told to depart with a light throttle! Did these people have no soul?
I used to work as a locomotive engineer (driver) for the Soo Line/Canadian Pacific in the Chicago area (now retired). For a while I took trains from our Bensenville, IL yard to another railroad's yard on Chicago's south side. Most of the time we'd be held out by a stop signal on the Grand Trunk Railroad (Canadian National) to await our turn to enter the yard we were destined for. This would be in a nice neighborhood with pleasant homes. Once while stopped in the wee hours of the morning a woman from across the street from where our stopped train's locomotives were idling came out up to our train and asked if we could move our train a little further down the tracks as it was causing her home to vibrate. We took her up on her request and moved the whole works up the tracks. After that experience we always stopped our train a little further from her home and she became known to us railroaders as "the woman with the vibrating house."
@@robertp.wainman4094 I do indeed miss running a locomotive, the people I worked with and the money I made (still have a good pension). I don't miss the 12-hour days, working nights, the constant removal of yard jobs you could hold, getting "bumped" by someone with higher seniority (for better days off ... yes, I did the same) and the long drive to work (24 miles) especially in bad winter conditions.
Can't beat a proper train loco and coaches none of this bimode multiple car nonsense. You just can't beat all the vast variety of diesel design in this era. Still remember getting the train to Bournemouth and getting out to watch them hook up a diesel engine to pull the rest of the journey as we reached the end of electrification at the time

I think with the heritage diesels/steam locos they are cleaned by hand whereas with freight locos such as a class 66 they have automatic washers! Thanks for the comment!
That's nothing. I was on Kings Cross Station back in 1981 and they started up a Deltic on the stabling point. It took over 30 minutes to fire up an engine and by that time the whole of the station / tunnels and running lines were totally obliterated by thick white diesel fumes.
hello Train video 2023 dr's class 37s have been withdrawn from service and I like the drs class 37s Iike my favourite class 37 which is drs class 37422
Nice classic locos for sure. Would just not pass any emission limitations and rules of the day. Oily grey smoke all the time out...more dangerous than that of steam locos.
That class 40 pulling off was the equivalent of a chav doing a burnout to impress his friends. Love it 😂
There is no other sound on Earth like the Deltic. Unique, distinctive, pure music to the ears....

@FishingFan2 Try the Taurus from Siemens. The singing locomotive. No diesel stench, pure electrifying synergy.
@@Langevloei-NL Very weird though!😀
This is simply astonishing !!! Massive thanks for posting !!!

The delic is a beautiful machine in my opinion the best looking locomotive ever built
I agree, thanks for the comment!
That was nice of the 40 driver to showcase how fast a light engine diesel can take off for the fans!
Yes the driver did the same, with the same class 40 at Carlisle in my last video!
Thats how whistlers used to be driven, a very distant memory now. Superb.
Absolutely beautiful locomotives, lovely.

The sound of the Deltic takes me back to my spotting days at Kings Cross. Happy memories!

Hauled by a Deltic in the 60's and 70's - was always a highlight of a rail journey........nothing compares nowadays!

Great credit to everyone that helps to maintain this Deltic.

Napier Deltic sounds not from this world. Just incredible.

I think "Deltic Point" would be a good name for the new Network Rail building in York, as it references the York triangle & former railway works.
