03:10 Even though they have a Diesel engine, the Deltic has a characteristic, more revved up sound, which looks like it is going to explode, just like the Chieftain tanks. Typical of 2-stroke engines with opposing pistons. Nothing sounds like them. Fantastic compilation. It takes a lot of patience and love for trains to be waiting, no matter if it rains, snows, or 40 degrees in the shade.
As an American, born and raised, I find British diesel locomotives to be extremely intresting and boy do they make a growl!!! And they look so cool!!!!
I remember back in the 80’s living about 3k away from the ECML in Northumberland and hearing 37’s and 56’s at nights probably coal trains. I now live close to the same place and hear Azumas and 220’s. Thanks for sharing.
Greetings from the States. Love how a number of folks stick their head out the passenger car windows. Can't do that over here for fear of someone getting a fleck of dust in their eye and suing the railroad for negligence!! Love your thrash over there.
great.can't beat that EE sound of 'tractors'.my favourite location in the UK is Burngullow Junction, mainly in the '70's for 'tractors' coming off the ECC sidings with clay 'hoods'!
Great video, I remember the 37's double heading the iron ore trains up steep gradients to Consett steelworks here in County Durham, sweet music, nearly as good as the 9F's in the days of steam.....
Really the 9f was the height of Steam, after studying steam loco's around the world, all having their faults, the standard 9's took every innovation available to them , as well as all the tried a reliable methods, systems etc, and put it into one package.. It seems to a T all engineers and drivers loved them, they just worked, steamed well, made great power, and easy on the fireman.. those locos are legends in their own right..
Great work. I particularly appreciated the radical change in setting composition around 7.35. The water, overhead concrete clutter then the panning to scrub scruffy. Well done, you have the eye. John Kennedy.
WOW, great sounds in all the clips, especially the 16 minute 35 mark, it reminds me of the sound of a Lancaster Bomber flying over. Without sounding pathetic, it's choking me up, same with the 6 minute 35 mark, that one sound like a spitfire.
At 03:10 you see a British Rail Class 55 "Deltic" locomotive. They have a sound like no other Diesel locomotive due to their unique opposed piston triangular build.
Used to drive the class 37s every day when I was a fireman working with BR out of eastfield traction depot springburn Glasgow 1974 onwards 37 was a fantastic workhorse hauled many coal trains on a triple header 37 out of barassie in Ayrshire 45 wagons
Totally agree, the Class 37 has been great servant to the railways for over 50 years. They always bring a smile to my face when ever I see one at work.
Hey Thomas, I had an uncle that worked out of Eastfield, Cowlairs I'm sure he started as fireman then went onto driving Electrics out of Bridgeton, they called him The Captain and I worked in Cowlairs signal box for about 9 months in the late 70's as a junior logging times, delays, signaling faults 😊

I have a question, sorry if it sounds silly, but when there are two engines, either in tandem or one at both ends, how do both engines operate the throttles in unison please? Always wondered this since being a kid, I’m now 46 lol. The intercity 125 started that thought. Thanks in anticipation.
In the case of the HSTs (Intercity 125) both power cars are under power as there is an electronic connection via the carriages. With diesel locomotives in top and rail mode this varies, sometimes they work in unison sometimes it’s just the leading loco working.
14:40, is that loco hauling ex BR ntercity 125 coaches, because they look like they are with the narrow rectangle window Mark 2F's. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Railways_Mark_2#/media/File:Taunton_-_Riviera_Trains_Mk2f_3356.JPG And a couple of Arriva MK 2F livery. .
came because I heard what sounded like a helicopter going down the rails by my house, the only thing I could think it would logically be is a diesel train!
@Lineside South East fair enough would be good to see them on the mainline though never seen one running is there any updates on that class 45 they were trying to refurbish for mainline traffic?
British Railways ceased to exist in 1997 when the railways were privatised. There are now many different train operating companies that run train services on the network.

Britain used to create the most stylish locomotives
They definitely look better than any other European classic Diesels, I especially enjoy their take on the Bulldog nose.
@@penskepc2374 Mmm. The 37/40/peak/55 are why I like the EMD F/E series diesels.
The latest foreign imported diesel locos from Canada, Spain etc have become more and more box like although I quite like the class 68 appearance.
I suppose it's not fully British but the class 68 is very stylish in my opinion for a modern train
And now we create nothing the government has ruined manufacturing
Love the sound of those 37's! Brutal machines!

Window hanging used to be a lot more common over here in the past. Can only really be done on private preserved railways these days.
I'm pretty sure you can still open the window on the Conway Scenic in New Hampshire.
The best sound in the world, diesel train engines
Awesome bit of video here. Love your earlier UK diesels.
The 37 class always sounds particularly awesome

That 50 Thundering through the country side
Love that class 37 sound reminds me of my early years going to Newcastle to visit dad working on the docks with my mother loved every minute. ❤
What is the train at 13:02 please? Love that grumble
50008 working the 5Z21 Wembley Lmd to Bristol Barton Hill empty stock move.
These behemoths are the real workhorses & the rumble of their engines gives me chills 👏🙏🙌🇬🇧
Awesome! I watched this a few years ago but I've come back to rewatch it! I'll have to make a thrash compilation of my own.
Thanks for the rewatch.
Fantastic video, not much beats the sound of full throttle diesel!

These modern loco's aren't a patch on the old ones for sheer grunt... These 66's and 70's just can't compete with the Deltic, 50's and good ol' 37s
True, although I think the 70s and 68 do actually sound quite good when being worked hard.
Lineside South East it’s just that they’re so powerful they rarely work at full power.
Ben Jared That’s very true, I’m sure there lots of noise regulations that modern locomotives have to comply with as well.
3:30 I really like these type of diesels
Excellent selection, well captured, the only favourites I missed would have been a Deltic on both engines and a class 40! I enjoyed this!
Many thanks!

Is the diesel engine pulling an Elizabeth line train at 2 minutes 15s?
Yes, a Class 345 Elizabeth line EMU.

Class 42 Diesel Hydraulic "Warship" number D821 "Greyhound" on the Epping and Ongar railway in Essex.
Why wont they put the 42 and the 35 back on mainline would pull in a fortune
Getting a heritage diesel back to mainline standards would also cost a fortune. It would take many years before you made your money back.

what does Thrash mean in this context?
A diesel engine working hard, pulling a heavy train up a gradient or running at high speed for example.
Hello! May I ask you, do they still operate under BR or different operators? This was something I've always wondered.
British Railways ceased to exist in 1997 when the railways were privatised. There are now many different train operating companies that run train services on the network.
Not sure why but British Diesels seem to have a certain charm and style American Diesels lack.
Cos ours are better!
What is *thrashing*
A diesel engine being worked hard and making a lot of noise.
Where's the thrashing?? Nice footage though.
Definitely the best cheers.
