I live near to the west coast mainline just north of Crewe, I recall lying in bed at night as a child in the 70's and just could hear these for miles, especially in the summer nights.
Me to, same. on a calm summers night you could hear them approaching from 3 miles away. i know that because i lived high up on a hill and i could see the tracks they rode along. was 3 miles away from my location at the time.
Well the where built at a time when our Rail industry was at it's peak British engineering at it's finest. You gotta remember a lot of these so called 'modern' trains are built abroad anyway, sadly a lot of our rail building capacity has diminished and successive governments choose to invest in cheaper made products from abroad , mostly Germany / Swiss or Danish brands. With any luck this may change with this new Labour governments commitment to re-nationalize the rail network, and hopefully kick start British production once more. These bad boys where built to last good ol class 37
@@DannieGemz Just to counter your point, there's nothing innately wrong with trains made in Germany, Switzerland or Denmark. They are still solid machines, but I do agree that we should restart our heavy industry and make our own locos again because, mainly, it will open up a LOT of skilled engineering jobs locally
Used to take them for granted back in the day and ‘oh it’s just another 37’. Will we ever feel the same about a 66 as we do now about these vintage workhorses?
@@trainsplanesOh yes you will. I said the same about diesels and steam. Now I'm watching those same diesels that displaced steam having been displaced themselves. Great shots and sounds. Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
Lovely video of an iconic Diesel. Lovely to see Donny Pete with Charlie, Shame what happened to Charlie, glad that Donny Pete is putting out his videos.
The sound of the double headed C37 iron ore trains labouring up a 1 in 35 stretch at Annfield Plain in County Durham heading for the steel works at Consett in the 1970's still resonates in my head, you could hear them for miles, the best sounding locomotive ever built in my opinion...
Old enough to collect their pensions (most of them) and still useful engines. I love any 37 but two together in large logo livery 😘👌 Thanks for uploading, perfect video for a relaxed BH Monday 👍
When I was young they used to scare me a bit - the snub nose, darkened split windscreen looked a bit satanic, and that pulsating growl as they ticked over! I miss them now though 😢
great video mate always love a tractor you cant beat em you ask donny Pete nice to see him on the platform at derby with the belated charlie thanks for sharing matey take care a t b syd 👍
Absolutely well done great camera work as usual I am really looking forward to seeing your next video I hope you get a nice video next time also when is your next video going to be on RUclips bye for now Philip
In Italy we have loco FS Class D345 and D445, with a 63L V8/95L V12 Engine which revs up to 1500 rpm: they sounds amazing, but are very muted compare to these beasts. I can only imagine the 37 exhaust on the D445; it will probably destroy all windows at every station.
60s - built in obsolescence, 37s - built! In modern terms 'over-engineered'. Going from rail to road, and I remember chatting to a driver of a CVG-6 in the late 70s, who said that it was the conversion to one man operated that would drive those buses to extinction. And it did indeed do that. Almost any spare parts could be put together in a local workshop...
Class 37s were built to meet a standard / specification. Now things are built to meet a price. The difference is an extra 30+ years of useful service life, so maybe it turned out to be the best value after all. There is a lesson in there methinks 😊
A bit like Triggers brush 25 years old, had 15 new brush heads and ten new handles , those diesel's will have had many engine, wheelset replacements ,great none the less
Id like to see this modern 💩💩 last 60 years I'm 80 and I saw these out of the wrapper great sound those growling 37 omg sound great on my surround sound thank god in I'm in a detached house
@paulcaswell2813 it's incredible to think that with today's technology they haven't been able to build anything better if they had they would be long gone its a testament to the engineering & design they are still in use 60 years later

I love the irony that these 60 year old workhorses are still used to tow broken down modern trains

Dane here. We have not had any production of railway material for more than a couple of decades now, so I wonder what we might have sold to the UK.
These should never be scrapped. Absolute icons on the railways. Remember them very well seeing off my dad at train stations in the 80's.
Used to take them for granted back in the day and ‘oh it’s just another 37’. Will we ever feel the same about a 66 as we do now about these vintage workhorses?
Unlikely I’d say but some appreciation of Sheds will likely grow as they start being phased out in the future. 👍
Yeah because most locos in the future will be battery operated and sound crap
Best work horse diesel loco ever existed and still going strong till this day never skipped a beat 💯👌

Can’t stand ying yings a 37 sounds awesome compared to them
37 always my favourite diesel ⛽ love the heritage & wonderful purring engine noise 👍👏🚊
Even 40 years ago they looked like something from another era... and they're still there.
Lovely video of an iconic Diesel. Lovely to see Donny Pete with Charlie, Shame what happened to Charlie, glad that Donny Pete is putting out his videos.
Found memories of 37's inthe 70's on semi stoppers london to cambridge, standing in sworders field as they struggled out of Bishops Stortford
Beautiful just beautiful.
60 years old & still going strong same as me. I was born 2 months before the first Western was introduced, lasted a lot longer than all but 7 of them
Just gotta love the sound of the Class 37. Cheers from eastern TN
Fabulous coverage, really enjoyed thanks 💕
The Transit van of the railways. Childhood memories of these pulling coal trains to and from the Welsh coal mines.
I used to live in Caerphilly and I remember watching them go up and down the valleys from my bedroom window
My favorite class 37 was 37509 which was featured in a tv ad but was scrapped at Cardiff Canton.
They need to be kept going forever
Awesome collection of the tractors in action 👌
Fantastic compilation! Thanks for putting it together and sharing 👍
Excellent video my friends awesome 😮fantatic locomotive Greeting 👋🏻 😊

fantastic footage as always
I bet every driver gets int he seat of a 37, looks at the power handle and thinks, "Yeah, lets pull it right back!"
I know someone who has driven a fair few 37 in his time, and he couldn't agree more with your statement.
Old enough to collect their pensions (most of them) and still useful engines. I love any 37 but two together in large logo livery 😘👌

Actually that Europhoenix top and tail was pretty special too
I’ve seen 37884 tow a class 321 and a class 377 at hanwell, which tells me it’s still going good
Drooltastic, mate! High-quality filming, to which others should aspire.
Great collation and a nice tribute to an iconic loco.
👍🏻
Nice to see a 37 pulling a 66 and a 67, something tells me they won't be around for 60+ years.
Excellent footage - well done.
Great video montage & the rumble is the stuff of ligands even by todays standards 🇬🇧👏👍🙏

I love how the 2nd to last 37 set the car alarms off lol.
Good collection of Growlers, I wonder how many are still around?, ironic when you look at those 60’s parked up already and the 37’s are still going.

Things will have come full circle when I see a Class 37 in the nationalised colour scheme of Great British Railways.
They actually look intimidating !
Up there with best diesel platforms ever built. Just something about the size, sound and shape that makes them perfect.
💯👍
Awsome😊😊

Agreed - Cost is king nowadays unfortunately.
12:25 That Is What They Should Do In The E&CR (The English & Celtic Railways)
The quality of products coming out of the Vulcan works in Newton Le Willows. Sadly, all demolished, just the workers' village left.
A bit like Triggers brush 25 years old, had 15 new brush heads and ten new handles , those diesel's will have had many engine, wheelset replacements ,great none the less
@@leswall3061 How much of Flying Scotsman is original by now at 100 years old, after all it's rebuilds, lol 🤣
Rather ironic since they would have had EE Brush alternators.
The only original bit would be the worksplate ;-)

Just goes to show that the politics within BR didn't work when they went away from EE. They got it right though with the C 37
Unpopular opinion: The new LORAM livery looks awesome on a 37!
#Savetheclass37
how do you tow a modern train? Get a british one :)
I wonder how long their lifespan will be?
They’ve outlived expectations already I’d say 👍
@@trainsplanes yes they have but it would be nice if they had a few more years to go.
Until someone spots just how much dirty exhaust they emit 😱 !!
@@trainsplanes I'd have given their original intended lifespan as something like thirty years. Forty absolute maximum.
@paulcaswell2813 it's incredible to think that with today's technology they haven't been able to build anything better if they had they would be long gone its a testament to the engineering & design they are still in use 60 years later
When they double them up then.....
Lucky bastards
wow that whole line of class 60s parked up, why not stick a new engine and brake pads on them, Who signed off on the 68s? god they are ugly as hell
