I have seen similar a number of times when I worked at Tyseley TMD CSD back in the 80s. 40106 was one such spectacular start, not long after regaining her green livery. 👍👍
When I was a kid and these first started being used we all used run the couple hundred yards from home to railway siding to watch them start up absolute beasts each one had its own sound and growl loved them and riding on them.
The Cardiff Canton just passed us while we were walking the dog on the beach, Nth Wales. Could tell it wasn't the usual engine passing just from the sound. I'm not a train buff, but even I enjoyed seeing it pass 😊
Its the firing order that make these sound like they do.V12,s or V16,s firing two pots at a time running down the crank.Glorious noise and pigs to start for the same reason.
@@davidvines8141 The idea of two pots firing at the same time increased torque on the crank .A generating set needs alot of torque to produce high voltage. These engines (English Electric) only ran upto 1800 rpm but produced huge torque.A generating set gets much harder to turn as it produces more volts and so forth. The Deltics and their Napier two strokes used two engines to generate that level of torque. The class 37,s were brutal pulling machines.
Dirty Noisy Smelly Old Tractor they have a soul and bags of charisma, the starter motor sounds like that long haired bloke who won the Eurovision song contest.
I believe US diesels have a drain cock on each cylinder so that the accumulated moisture can be blown out of the cylinders before starting the engine . This does not appear to have caught on un the UK.
It may be that we don't have the extremes of heat the US has and the complexity of another of point failure, for an infrequent use item was not worth the risk? I don't recall seeing anything on the Swiss designed Sulzer units either - I could be wrong. That said the US was well on with Boiler Water chemistry for steam trains for years prior to the UK getting involved with it, and the UK had to use a US designed bogie for it's MK1 coaching design.
Hi there Again it is Mr Cannadine T. Boxill-Harris, I have another interesting idea for most of us Class 313, Class 314 and that also is including those interesting Class 315 Fans out there, rather than scrapping most of those Class 313's Class 314's including the Class 315's maybe you guys can convert them and including the refurbishment into those Leyland 510 Engine, Volvo B10M Engine, Gardner 6LXCT Engine, Gardner 6LXB, Engine, Gardner 8LXB Engine, Class 313's, Class 314's and the Class 315's and convert all of them into a 2 Carriages and Three Carriages of the Class 313's, Class 314's and that is including those Class 315's for most of us Class 314's and the Class 315's Diesel Train Fans Pretty PLEASE. Yes, the masks were for Covid reasons. I think the compulsory wearing of masks restriction had been lifted at the time but a lot of people were still wearing them through personal choice.
spectacular and fun to watch but as a diesel mechanic this shows a badly maintained/set up engine, it should fire straight up on all 12 cylinders. they used to leave locos ticking over all night just incase they took too long to start when needed in the morning, wudda been easier and more economical to just fix the issues in the first place, typical br (and british logic on the whole)
Although similar in shape and built around the same time this is not a Deltic. There were over 300 of these Class 37,s built, but only 22 Class 55 Deltics. I will be posting a video of one of the few remaining Deltics in action shortly so you will be able to compare the 2 types of locomotives.
There is pleasure watching these big diesels stumble into life.
And a lot of pollution.
A bit like me waking up in the morning. Lots of coughing and farting, finally stumbling into life.
No matter where you are in the world that delicious aroma never changes
Don't let Greta Thjunberg see this! Lovely video.
😀
She's a clueless fear mongering puppet.
If these machines were equipped with pre-heaters they weren't to blame as environmental disasters.
If these were equipped with preheaters I don't think many would watch this
Greta would be down for the railways, so much better than cars!
I love a grumpy EE cold start. One cylinder at a time.......
Love that whine of the starter motor on first turnover. Some power there!
I find this so deeply satisfying...
I've no real idea why

These are dinosaurs from the late 50's using engines designed in the 30's. The latest diesels use american engines
No pre heaters on these hence the smoke
I believe the driver had just got back from a trip to Manali... hehehe 😅
These a British engines which are beasts not American imported we made trains 1st

Best loco ever
That'll make greta cry
Doing its best impression of a steam engine
this is so great 👍
Plenty of smoke and noise, but sadly no flames. Anyway, I am glad that my car doesn't start like that.
Superb! I love the farting and hunting once the diesel is running.
Me on a Monday morning
Two cylinders are firing just fine. Now for the other ten...

Jeez. Glad I'm not standing anywhere near those fumes. Impressive power but f*ck those old engines are filthy
Why does it sound so cool! I don’t get it. I’m not even into trains🤷🏻♀️😅
This was the start up before taking delegates to the green party conference!!😂😂👍
how dare you 🤣😂
It like heavy smoker clearing their lungs
2:05. Were they covid masks or clag fallout masks. Lol
Why does it increase and decrease revs when idling?
cool to see
sounds like an old tin ball engine. If the bullet is red, we go.
Classic stuff. The folks wearing the masks, is that for COVID?
Yes, the masks were for Covid reasons. I think the compulsory wearing of masks restriction had been lifted at the time but a lot of people were still wearing them through personal choice.

Don't they warm the oil and the coolant up?
No

PM2.5 up in the 300+?
why does the idle chop like that?
I am not technically minded but I believe that it is something to do with stale fuel evaporating. It also occurs on old diesel bus engines.
