You are absolutely right that you have to be thankful that no one was hurt and no damage was done to other boats. Your son is to be commended for keeping his cool because I'm sure it was pretty traumatic to see his dad slip and hit the water and not knowing if the truck ran you over too. That was a good looking truck so I'm sorry for your loss. Also glad to hear that this accident won't keep you off the water!

    Thanks for posting Man, I used to be one who enjoyed watching those boat ramps disasters, after 40 years of boating plus 10 years more with my dad before that I ended up with my truck semi submerged. At the time of it happening I was like "no no not me i'm not in my life this only happens to others". I had for the first time purchased a 4x4 truck (so I though it was) a 2015 RAM Laramie 4x4, what I didn't know was that the transfer case only engaged the front wheel when you press the gas pedal. I had been talking with Dade police for about 5 min with my truck parked on the ramp at Crandon. They had just controlled the boat for safety gear etc when we returned with my wife and kids and they were still there when I returned with the truck and backed the trailer in the water so we were just making small talk. Truck was in "4x4 low" mode, parking brake applied and trans in "Park". Sea was very low tide and my rear was sitting on algae but hey I've got a 4x4 with my front on dry cement so nothing to fear. I turned away from the cops and started to walk towards the boat that was moored at the end of the dock, now remember the truck had been parked in the same place already 5 minutes, suddenly the cops started to shout, I turn around to see my truck running to the water with the front free wheeling... I jumped in but my feet were slipping as if on ice. I managed to get to the front door, the window was down, the water was already up to the seats, there was a strong smell of electrical burned, engine was still running, no way to pull it out by hand or putting in gear, I shut it off and opened the bonnet to disconnect the battery. I called my wife (luckily my phone was on the boat) and told her to come back and park in front of me up the ramp, she was there in no time, I ran to get the anchor line and started making few runs of line between the truck and her rear axle. it is at that time that the cop asked me the vehicle papers and I thought "that's it if I don't control myself I sleep in jail tonight" so I just told him the papers are in the truck just go get them in a tone that would not be appropriate speaking to the police. Above all I can tell you the biggest lesson I received that day came from young people passing by with their trucks. As old folks (like me) were laughing and telling me to call my insurance 2 young lads seeing me and my wife trying all we could to get the truck out of there just dropped their boat and trailer and came to park at the ramp so I could tie my ropes to their truck, (my wife's car didn't have the power to do that). They did get the truck out on the dry while the police was shouting that we were not allowed to do this by ourselves and we had to wait for their special team. AAA sent me a truck and load my truck onto it and delivered at my place, A friend came with his truck and we attached my trailer and pulled out my boat and drove home. I dismantled the truck completely the next day and treated every corner of it and rust never developed. replaced few electronic modules that were fairly cheap on ebay. Those 2 kids who gave their time and efforts to me they gave me more than that htey demonstrated that there is human feeling for one another in the new generation maybe even more that in older ones. I thank them with all my heart whoever they were. So yes it is pretty funny to watch this on videos but not funny for the people whom truck are in the wash, yes it can happen to anyone, shit it happened even to me haha... Respect to you for posting man!

    All of the ramps I launch from in NY have jagged, unfinished concrete on the lower portion of the ramp to prevent exactly this issue. Algae is not the only issue for smooth, finished concrete. There is also OIL from trucks/cars AND boats, mud deposited from the trailer wheels as it comes BACK UP the ramp, and of course other contaminants that settle on the concrete! Before I even get out of my truck, I TURN THE WHEELS completely towards the the ramp, so if by chance my truck slips, the back will turn into the ramp instead of straight down. I also apply my emergency brake before I get out my truck.

      Yes, your analysis of the ramp surface is exactly right. Launching a boat on a ramp that has smooth concrete is asking for trouble. Someone needs to file a lawsuit against the jurisdiction that is responsible for that boat ramp because it is clearly a public safety hazard.

  • @annteve
    @annteve Год назад +1

    I always check the ramp for algae before launching and experience has taught me to always wear non-slip runners-never bare feet or flip-flops. A backward fall risks a _very_ serious head injury or a Colles Fracture (broken wrist). Usually there’s beach sand nearby to grit the ramp surface if there’s a lot of algae. With rising water temperatures and pollution, algae is becoming a greater problem. You might even consider mounting a wire brush on a handle to scrub a tire path down the ramp free of algae. Sadly, that’s kind of a horse and barn door situation, for you. Great video.

    Eddy, I just found your video. I’m glad you and your son are okay and that nothing else happened. Well that same day I lost my 2017 Denali 2500HD 4x4 at Matherson Hammock. It was me and my wife alone in the afternoon around 4pm. There was an storm while I was pulling the boat towards the trailer when I saw the truck going back into the water. Also on the right end ramp. Well I run and was able to open the door and press the brake but by doing that more water got inside so all the electronics underneath of the driver seat got wet. The engine was still on but the 4x4 didn’t engage so another good person helped me with his truck pulling out. Long story short since all those electronics got wet and everything stopped working the insurance paid me off ( the truck was fully paid ). I ordered a new one also and just got it last Friday. I also bought a new custom trailer designed for my boat because I don’t want the rear tires to touch the water. I’ve been trailing boats and jet ski for over 20 years and never ever had any issue out there. Like you said, this can happen to anyone. It’s a really bad experience!

    Salt water ramp’s definitely claim allot of tow rigs. Also Pickups being light on the rear axle are quicker to slide than heavier trucks like SUVs or trucks with campers etc. I’ve seen three go in and they all looked just like your experience. It happens quicker than people realize. Add how damn slick the ramps are in ts hard to move fast to get back to the cab.
    Solo launching when you need to leave the cab is something I really try to avoid given this can happen to anyone. I’ve even rigged trip lines on the bow ring so I can trip it loose from the drivers window and pull up some to clear / dry pavement, before chasing the boat over to the dock.

      I knew posting this I’d have tons of people talking crap. The people that know me, know how safe and meticulous I am when it comes to doing anything that has to do with my cars or boats. This was something that happened because of my trailer and the new weight distribution of my boat after I had it restored. Simply engaging my 4x4 would have saved my truck. We live and we learn. Posted this mainly because some people were posting the video stating things that were completely false and I wanted to at least help one other person not go through this by stating the importance of not getting comfortable at the ramp.
      Not sure what happened to you, but hope you’re ok and that everything turned out alright.

    Most people think a 4x4 is four wheels pulling bad misconception. Most four wheel drive vehicles are one front and one rear wheel pulling at any given time ie open differentials which is the majority of trucks. Lockers will lock up the differentials to where all four wheels pull at same speed same torque at all times. In 53 years I’ve owned all types but currently have a two wheel drive with positive traction which means if a wheel slips it locks the differential and both rear tires pull at same speed and torque. I launch every weekend at multiple waterways and ramps and have seen many big fire breathing trucks pulled into the water and sunk. My truck has never ever spun a tire at all on any ramp I’ve ever used. Also it’s a lot of the drivers technique and knowing how to control the throttle.

  • @randym4917
    @randym4917 6 месяцев назад

    Would have been helpful to post what the traction rating was for the tires you had on that truck. The traction rating is stamped in the tire sidewall, and also provided in the specs from the tire manufacturer. Probably too late now?

    Seen couple vehicles saved bc the boat was able to help keep it from going under.
    But with ur fall, dont think thay would of helped enough either.
    Also, seen an old ford & old jeep Cherokee E-brake cables snap & rolls in.
    growing up fishing in SW FL, gets bad on the ramps Especially low tide.
    Cant believe its not grooved at all tho.
    Noticed newer or redone ramps are grooved around low tide area & further out.
