I really appreciate the fact that you fella’s report real heavy duty truck facts…. Not just mpg and interior seat cushions…. We buy these trucks to use ….
Yeah...real heavy duty stuff...man...where are all these crumbs coming from?..........
THANK YOU!!! I'm a structural engineer and have been so frustrated with the internet not knowing that payload is not really capability but a legal restriction based on class. Subbed and liked for that and making it a point.
For a complete noob when it comes to towing this video was super helpful thank you !
Huge kudos to you guys for explaining this in understandable language. Way too many big truck and big rv reviewers don't understand the registration limitations and how those affect that door sticker. If you want to go even further into the weeds you can look at US DOT classifications and begin to realize why some owners want full capability with (on paper) a low GVWR.
As a true truck enthusiast and a diesel mechanic, i already know this information but I enjoy your channel so much, i just watch your videos anyway!!! Thank you guys for the best truck channel on the internet!!
@justinclark6053
NOT!!!
Class 1 railroader here and I can tell you these trucks hold up well in some of the worst conditions. They are loaded down from day one and normally see anywhere from 25000 to 40000 per year until they reach 275000 miles. This is minimal preventative maint, extended oil changes 10000 to 15000 miles no transmission maint and no rear axle maint. We stopped buying Dodge trucks for a while except for half tons.
I went with a 2024 3500HD and traded in my 2020 2500HD to get the added payload. I tow a fairly heavy 5th wheel from NY State to Florida and back each year and I was right up against the max weights with the 2500HD. The 2500HD was more than capable but if I was ever in a wreck and an attorney decided to weigh my truck and trailer and I was over weight at all, I would be in trouble so I opted for the 3500HD. I went with the LT instead of the LTZ 3500HD because all I cared about that the LTZ offered over the LT was the LED Headlights. So I saved $3,500 U.S. on the MSRP and then bought LED bulbs for $250 and installed them myself.
and you dont need a cdl?
@@aksauce614 No, not in NY State where my permanent residence is. I do have to have Commercial License plates/Registration though which cost a little bit more than passenger vehicle plates. That was true with my 2500HD as well because they weigh more than 6,000 pounds.
@@robh063I have 6500 tow trucks man it’s expensive 😂
@@cristianadame4352 You have 6,500 tow trucks?
So from what I can understand
The 2500 w/max tow, can actually handle the 3500 payload, except on paper they have to classified it in a different category? " so the only difference is on paper "
Bingo
Appreciated this video. It confirmed all my suspicions over the years of purchasing trucks for myself and my business. I always go just 2500. I had an older knowledgeable sales man years ago explain the very minor difference. He told me “kid, get whatever has what you want. They’re the same otherwise” lol one of those overly simple answers that is often lost today.
But they're not the same...
@@evocati6523 yup, minor differences especially depending on the options the 3/4 tons have. It was a great video showing those differences.
Great video. Just bought a 2024 2500HD and was curious how many differences there were. The number differences when it comes to towing and payload capacities are all over the place lol. I was comparing mine with the 2500 in your video. For our current RV purpose and future plans, the 2500HD is more than enough truck. We went from 2011 F150 working at about 80% capacity to 2500HD at 35%. Can't wait till camping season. Again, great videos and thanks from fellow Ontarian.
Thank you guys. I've read numerous blogs, watched tons of videos... you're the first to give a clear breakdown of the differences between 2500 and 3500. Love your content!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video. You explained a lot about the differences of the 2 trucks. I have a 2024 2500 HD Custom. Its got all the stuff I needed. I love the truck so far.
Without a doubt, best video I’ve ever seen if you want to know about truck differences, but also what the different weight ratings mean, especially when it comes to licensing and registration. Nice work gentlemen. I’ve been in that boat where I bought a Ram 2500, didn’t pay attention to the fact that it only had 1900 lbs of payload, sold it after 3 years to specifically get a 3500 dually to get the payload I needed to tow a big 5th wheel. Have since stepped down to a SRW 3500 Chevy. Also nice to see that the steering column trim on your truck is crooked as well…..
Don't feel alone, I ended up doing the same thing, with lots of "constructive criticism" from my spouse. 🤣🤣
man I thought my 24 3500HD was out of alignment because the trim is crooked in mine when the wheel is strait. Only reason I havent had an alignment is because my tire guys said they cant align this new of a truck yet because of the lane assist BS they put on and Im not one that likes to let the dealership put their hands anywhere near my new vehicle.
Thanks for taking the time to create this excellent educational video. I have owned both and am now far more clear over the differences!
This video is absolutely awesome, not only did it answer my simple question, but it gave me more awesome information about these trucks and motivated the hell out of me about both trucks.
Such great trucks! The best HDs on the road especially the ZR2.
😂😂😂
i just got my 3500 ltz without a sunroof, didn't want it either. Thanks for the great video!
Sun roof is a repair in the making, not if it will leak its when
Thanks for clearing all of that up...I recently bought a 2024 2500 with Max Tow that I absolutely love...and then started looking at 5th wheels and thought I made a mistake. My 2500 has a GVWR of 11750, payload of 3505, conventional trailer rating at 20K and gooseneck/5th wheel of 21600. It's nice to now know that I basically bought a 3500 SRW without the 3500 badging!!!!
Great video! As a GM employee i had an idea in the differnce between the two but your video is spot on!
thank you SO MUCH for this video and explanaining the differences between 2500 HD, 3500 HD, and the 2500 HD max trailering
Love your content gents. Keep it up!
I am sold on 3500 because I want a truck camper and I want to stay below legal payload.
My big question is long bed versus 7 foot bed. I prefer a short bed but how the vehicle handles when loaded can be impacted by wheelbase and where the center of gravity is relative to the rear axle.
Can you do a video with max payload in each truck and see how each handles?
I recently purchased a 2024 Silverado 2500HD LTZ, and I can frankly say that the Max Tow Package came as quite a surprise. The window sticker explicitly says the Max Tow Pkg comes with "3500HD frame, leaf springs, 12" rear axle, HD shock package". Literally the only difference I can tell between my truck and an identical 3500HD SRW are the badges on the outside. This is my third 2500HD truck in a row from Chevy (2004 and 2013 prior to this one), and I can say that the evolution of these trucks has been remarkable.
Great video guys, great comparison and explanation!
Great job guys! Thank you. I’ll check with my state to see how those differences effect me. You earned a subscription.
Great review and comparison - getting the technical numbers interesting.
Great video. Clears up a lot of questions between the 2 trucks. Trying to find answers from the dealer or Internet is a run around. Buying a new 3500 soon.
Great job on expanding the difference between the two trucks keep up the good work
Thanks 👍
This is extremely helpful info thank you!!
Good video guys. One thing worth mentioning is how much your payload can be affected depending on the trim. Case in point, that high country 2500 has a 2,890lb payload because it’s loaded up with lots of lipstick and shiny bits. My 22 2500 WT CCSB Z71 has 3,520lb payload because it doesn’t have all the fancy stuff but 600 pounds of payload more is significant. Also any difference in height of about an inch can be attributed to heavier spring packs with the camper and snow plow prep packs. My 2500 has both so the springs are heavier. 5600/6600 so that’s where the inch can come in.
That’s right. I have a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD SE. IT HAS 3300 LBS of payload because of the lower trim level.
Weeeee geeeeeeet it...... You couldn't afford the 3500. No one cares. The high country does not have 600 lbs in leather and chrome. Nice try though. Apples to apples, wt to high country is not 600lbs. Carpet does not weigh more than rubber. You may be referring to more sound deadening, thicker glass, better build. If you think a WT vs high country is just "lipstick" you have never watched one get built at the plant....
@@clinth1636weeee geeett it. You’re not great at critical thinking or reading comprehension. Payload is just made up in your world 🤡
@@Lq32332 Projecting a little bit there, bud? Where did I say payload is made up? Quite literally my main point is 600lbs is not accurate, and the difference between WT And high country is not "600 lbs of lipstick." Someone has to call this guy out on his bull crap stating that the real reason he got the entry level is because of cost and the higher payload capacity due to no "lipstick."
@@clinth1636 lmao you are a very dumb person
According to GM specs with the 2500hd, the GVRW IS 11,350 LBS. When you add the Max Tow pkg, it increases the GVRW to 11,750 lbs. Then of course, the 3500hd has the 12,100 lb GVRW. Just to clarify. I looked at all of these before ordering my 3500. I really enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work.
Which really makes them both class 3 (10,001 to 14,000 lb) trucks. A lot of the 250/2500s are no longer class 2B trucks.
This is how my 2022 Silverado 2500HD LT came: 11,350# GVWR, 3400# Payload. The 3500HD SRW had a slightly higher GVWR and payload.
That's cute. My 2020 Ram 3500 HO GVWR is 12,300. ;-)
I have a 2023 with a GVRW with 13150 is that no longer a option
@@freddievanfleet1259 I have never heard of a truck having that close to 14,000 lb GVWR without being right at 14k. Which 2023 do you have?
Great video, very informative! Truck King is king!
Great review on the differences, thank you so much for that!! One interesting thing here - In British Columbia Canada we pay a PST based luxury tax (additional 3%) on the 2500 series, which is not applicable on the 3500 series due to the fact that the 3500 series (at least here in BC) is considered in a commercial class, thus the luxury tax does not apply, even though it may be more luxury equipped. This tax applies to almost any passenger type gas/diesel vehicle in BC that are valued over $55,000
Great explainer. Now if only you can get the big three to discuss how they calculate their payload numbers.
I'm pretty sure they take GVWR rating and subtract weight of the truck and that results in payload. So, trucks with more packages and options weigh more with equates to less payload.
Payload is simply GVWR minus Curb Weight. GM no longer offers a 10K GVWR package which matters with registration in some states. They must no have many takers like Ford does.
Nice job explaining both trucks. It's hard to find someone that explains the numbers so a person can understand.
Me, I went for the gas duel rear wheel. Payload is my big concern. My fifth wheel puts 3800 pounds in the bed. Then the weight of the hitch, the driver/passenger and so on, things add up quickly.
My truck is a 2024 GMC, same truck drive train wise. Yes, I ordered it with no sunroof.
Keep the shows coming I enjoy them.
Thanks
Thanks for this info, am trying to decide between the two and it all makes more sense now. I appreciate the video.
Hey guy a big thank you for explaining to us the difference between GVWR and tow ratings Also telling us about the max tow package, which is practically a 3500 again, thank you for the great explanation
Great video and great explanation on both
Great video, with all the right information. Do you do a 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton version?
Thank you. 2500 Custom 2024 Silverado 6.6L gas works for me towing a 34 foot Coachman Freedom Express Ultra light 292BHDS. Only extras I asked for was bed liner spray on and the same steps that's on the High Country. Kept the price reasonable at just under 57k. No sales tax in New Hampshire. I don't need frills and grills. Great presentation!.
price under
Thank you, that was an excellent tutorial.
I have a 2500hd max tow, it was spec’d out as a “crummy” (slang term for a work truck for a logging company around here). I didn’t know it was a max tow when I bought it but figured it out when I decided to buy a 39 ft travel trailer.
Some benefits I accidentally got was a higher payload because my trim and options packages were on the basic side as a work truck. I can load a bit more than a one ton because of it. I still have all the muscle, breaks, suspension, better mirrors, and so on but it’s not fancy on the inside. Just my style. Oh and much much cheaper!!
Must be an easterner lol
@@sprucegoose1016 Pacific Northwest Oregon and Washington
I haven't heard that term in years!
I also have a 2024 Chevy 3500 HD (got it in May of 2023) LTZ without a sunroof. I did get the heads-up display (through the electronics package). I absolutely love my truck!
One month ago my 2500 LTZ crew cab long bed finally came in. I'm like your dad in the fact that I didn't want the sunroof. Option wise it's loaded. So far, I'm enjoying it very much. The reason I went with the 2500 is, that the max I'm towing is 13k-14k and my cargo weight capacity is less than 500 pounds less than the 3500.
I got the same thing in June of 2020. I wanted all the options but no sun roof and wanted white CC LB and don't like the high country white bumpers, HC wheels, stock wheels, and a couple other things. They had 3 LTZ trucks with every option but sun roof and 5th wheel prep and z71 for the same sticker price as the HC. Orders weren't getting filled during the pandemic and I really needed a new truck when I finally went looking. With back and neck problems I didn't want a harsher ride and there were mixed opinions on the ride of the 3500 plus komnifornia would have just charged me more for tags and my needs were easily met with the 2500. I love mine and added the banks pedal monster which makes even more difference than the derringer tuner. It can get 20 mpg on the freeway at 85 mpg and tows 12-14k pounds with ease.
Very informative. Thanks!
Awesome video for an inexperienced tower looking for a truck. Thank you!
Thanks for specifics - been trying to figure out exactly what the Dif is 1500HD vs 2500HD vs 3500 for a few weeks now. Best comparison I've found so far.
Remember there are big differences between years as well. In the early 2000’s the 1500hd and the 2500 were identical, you didn’t get a diesel option in those because it was saved for the 2500hd as well as the full float rear axle and frame.
Also If you compare a 2500hd from the early 2000’s to a single wheel 3500hd they are identical aside from more leafs on the 3500.
Great video thank you. I'm with your dad, I am not really one that likes to have the sunroof or moonroof and have always tried to find the options I want without being forced into getting the glass over my head. With that said I have a 3500HD DRW LTZ without the glass roof. And In my opinion the interior looks very nice and has a more classy look and feel to it compared to the lower trim packages.
Awesome explanation. I always thoughts there were more suspension differences between the two.
Good job, my trucks always start with WT
Great vid, here in Alberta if you’re using your pickup commercially the DOT doesn’t use your manufacturer max load they go by your tire max load.
This is such an outstanding video! Great info guys, easy to digest and very helpful. THANK YOU!
Thank you for the information.
Great job.
Great info on the 2500 vs max tow/3500. OEMs love making things a bit convoluted so nice to hear/see a breakdown between them all.
They are complicated, I agree. But, I can also assure you that all the Government (s) & different agencies have more to do with that then we can imagine. Having dealt with the government both professionally & personally their is absolutely no doubt that they are the main reason for the differences in numbers & engineering for these (and other) trucks.
Thank you for the video. This is one of the questions I had and you answered it perfectly. Now I know for sure that I want the 3500 vice 2500.
I learned tons on this video.
Damn I’d kill for either one of those beautiful machines. All comes down to insane truck prices nowadays
Great video. Very informative.
Sweet, finally a great comparison, love it
Money no object... 3500 Dually. Great vid guys.
Watching from NORTHERN ALBERTA, absolute love my 2024 2500 at4 hd with the 6.6 duramax , truly an amazing work vehicle
Nice info guys !
Great video! I love the few clips from the GM assembly plant. The larger rear end ring gear would be a nice benefit from 3500 or 2500 max tow, but for what i do, not needed. It will be a few years before im ready to spend $100,000 on a truck but that will be fun when i do. Right now my 2003 1500HD does the job.
Thanks, I went with the GMC 3500HD SLT CC LB gas, love it!
Great explanation of the difference between the two classifications of trucks 🛻. You really hit all of the points.
I don’t have a need for either actually but I like to learn, even though I sold Chevy for a year and some change. The main thing that I don’t like about the LTZ vs the HC outside of price is that I can’t stand big chrome bumpers. But if I had to pick a Chevy HD truck 🛻 I would just get the ZR2 trim.
Hey Howard n Steve...love the date on the door.. 11/23' Fresh build!!! You got me looking at long trucks now Howard. 4 dr long box
Fantastic video thanks guys
There are tax implications in British Columbia. One tons are exempt from the luxury tax, which kicks in at $55,000. Because of this, virtually every HD truck from every brand is a 1 ton here.
Hah! Great example of govt bureaucrats or politicians being clueless. Nice backdoor.
@@M22Researchthe goofy part is the government set it at $55,000 about 20 years ago and hasn't increased it since. Virtually every full-size pickup is over that price now.
Holy shit!!i saw boatloads one tons last i was there 2 years ago
This might be a strange comment. But I really like that son still calls him “dad” in the video. Much respect.
I got a 3500 gasser 6.6. Decided why not have the extra payload if I need it?
Awesome video. I would love to see a video about dually trucks.
Excellent, You and Father are just full of valuable information, Thank you, Robert
Our pleasure!
Amazing informations! These trucks arent even sold here, but i like searching about. Greetings from Brazil!
With General Motors, another difference is if you want the max tow in the three-quarter ton it only comes with the diesel. If you want the gas motor and the higher towing, you gotta go with the 1 ton truck.
Thank you Truck King. I have been asking different guys who actually drive trucks this question but they never give a simple and clear answer. It's almost like they are trying to keep you in the dark and demotivate you to buy one of these awesome trucks. WTF???
My truck is a 22 High Country 3500 LWB.I think if you are going to tow, especially 5th wheel, or Gooseneck, you should choose the long bed instead of the short bed. The short bed, whether you choose the factory Puck system or go after market install, you will have a hitch point that is about four or five inches behind the axle. This because the factory has placed a crossmember on the bed where the hitch needs to be. The long box does not have said crossmember at the axle centerline. With the hitch behind the axle, the heavier the hitch weight, the more weight you take from the front axle, granted it is not a great amount, but you need to add a little weight instead of removing from the front. The factory don't seem concerned with this, as a conventional trailer Max rating of 20,000 lbs, you have a hitch weight of 2,000 lbs, that is going to take weight off of the front axle.
Excellent video as always!!! 😁
I'm not sure if current trucks are like this but historically 3500's came with the heaviest duty rear AND front axles. The 2500's with the heaviest tow package came with the same frame, rear axle and rear suspension but the front axle was lighter duty by about 1000lb load capacity.
This was true for many years, all the way into at least the early 2000's.
Even my 1977 K30 vs my 1976 heavy K20 (it was a special order chassis cab for use as a tow truck) is this way. Both have the same full floating HD 14-bolt rear end but the K20 has a Dana 44 front axle (or GM equivalent) and the K30 has a Dana 60 front axle.
What is the difference regarding the front axle and front suspension in 2024 2500HD vs 3500's?
Dad and son, 3500 and 2500, dopplegangers with differences. Great video!
One thing that most people don't know is the 2500s are Torque limited in 1st gear, which GM originally admitted to but has worked to destroy the evidence of that admission. Their original marketing said something like "with a 12 inch ring gear 3500s get full torque in 1st gear" or something like that, so it was implied in their marketing and confirmed by one of their engineers.
Also of note, the 12" ring gear is only available on Duramax powered trucks, 3500 Gas trucks still have the smaller 11.5" ring gear axle
I wish that I had known about the 2500 Max Tow. I have the exact truck as y’all’s 3500 except for that DAMM Sunroof.
Good exhaustive comparison. Your Dad has great 3500 Silverado. Greetings
Glad to hear you bring this to light , my personal feelings are that we should either stay at the 10 k hard cap or the government should raise the weight classifications to reflect modern heavy picks so as a business owner you can still drive your 2500 diesel a few states away to pickup something without having to do a log book and in service times dates and stop at weigh stations. FYI any 2600 at 10,001 gvwr or higher is a class 3 1 ton truck as defined by the us dot ,and fir insurance purposes. That 2500 emblem is a lie
I have a 2023 3500 HD, single rear wheel, LT trim, crew cab, Duramax. Loving it. Replaces my 2006, 3500, SRW, regular cab, WT trim, Duramax.
Really enjoyed this information
Steve, great content and presentation. It’s great to see how you and your dad are close and work together so well. Question about the ring gears. If you say it’s true I’ll believe you but I thought that 2500 diesels have the same axle and ring gear as 3500 diesels. Is that incorrect? Second question the one thing I didn’t hear you mention was electronic torque reduction. Is there any torque reduction in the 2500s or 3500s and is it related to ring gear size? Thanks in advance and keep up the great content.
2500 diesels (non max-tow) have 11.5" ring gears, and 2500 max-tow and 3500 diesels have 12". 2500 max-tow and 3500 diesels do not have torque limiting in first gear (which is only enabled if you have tow-haul mode on, otherwise all the trucks start in 2nd gear)
Awesome info, glade I found your channel as I am currently in shopping mode. I will be buying either a 2500 or 3500. I do want to make sure the 2500 is max trailering other than that, LTZ package or if I go GMC either AT4 or Denali.
I have an Iridescent White2500 LTZ with Max Tow with no sunroof, mine also has the overhead cab lights as well
!! I agree with your dad, not a fan of sunroofs!!
A great example of load bearing stickers.
Am more confused steve😂😂 love the information guys
On the Ford side, I’m like your dad. I got a 21 F350 Lariat 4x 7.3L, the same config in F250 was slightly more $. I didn’t want sunroof because I run a law roof lightbar. I got the 7.3L rather than the diesel, saved $10k right there.
When I bought my 3500 chevy in 2006 I found exactly what you were talking about with numbers and weights. I bought a single wheel long bed. I really enjoyed your video and the explanations you gave. My truck has over 300000 miles on it and I'm starting to think about buying a new one. I can't get over how much they have gone up. I paid $41,000. out the door for mine and the same.one today is in the 90's to 100,000 depending on what you want. Can you do a video on the new Duramax? I would like to know if the new ones are as good as the one I have now. I have heard that they have made some changes that were not good buy that is only rumors. Thanks again to you and your Dad for a great informative video
Good comparison, one item is that the 2500 with the MAX Tow has a GVWR of 11750, verses the standard 2500 of 11350. I have the 3500 LTZ, without a sun roof. LOL
Thanks Guys.. With my 2011 chevy 3500HD I pay over $200 for registration in the state of PA. I was always curious of the differences. Thanks for the info.
I like these comparisons most other RUclipsrs don’t do it like this like TFL
Thanks for another great video! I have a question… what’s the name of the colour on the 2500 High country? TIA 👍🏻
Great Content boy's. I'm a new fan of your channel.
Welcome aboard!
Stephen and Howard, Please, LT Zed!!!
Nice vid , seriously.
You’re right about the “ packages” when whittling away or adding features on trucks. I Have to ask, the last truck in video. Is that color exclusive to the higher end like LTZ or high country? It’s pretty sharp would look just fine on an LT, imo:
Thanks !
