I like that Julie tastes while Jack explains. That's quality viewing and not drawn out.
Yeah, it's a great format.
We did a taste test in Italy, the region of Tuscany, during the carefree travel days....How you described it, is exactly how we approached the tasting and we all had our favorite. Of course we were in the middle of Tuscany, on a warm sunny day, surrounded by olive trees, amazing company, good wine and incredible cheese, so may have influenced our entire tasting experience. Non the less, I don’t view olive oil the same anymore and have found that the Kirkland 100% Italian Extra Virgin, cold extracted olive oil from Costco is quite nice for the price.
I couple days ago I got a bottle from my friends in Umbria. The oil is green as most olives are. I wish I could take a pix and show it to you. These olives were handpicked, the entire batch was not mixed with any other olives from the region or even from the neighbor's tree, all where taken to a frantoio and cold pressed with a stone wheel! It's so good!
Why can't you ?

I appreciate these taste tests. As someone who is admittedly ignorant of sooooo many things culinary, I find the ATK suggestions a good place to start. Often after a purchase I don't agree with the top choice, but the runners-up sometimes work for me. It helps me try something new without forming my opinion based on a lower-grade sample.
@Bo Zo Right on. Same thing with Beer and Liquors.
This isnt real olive oil its american crap
@@whitealliance9540 What exactly makes it fake tho?
@@silvergarcia9897 the american manufacturing process makes it fake. They didnt press olives like they do now.... Thousands of years ago they pressed olives 1 way to make oil. Some handmade oil and middle east oil is real. But this crap is crap. Real olive oil is so good you can drink it from a shot glass... Its creamy, rich, clean aftertaste. Low earth tones. And sweet.
@@whitealliance9540 Just because the oil is extracted differently doesn't mean it's not olive oil. And let's be honest the current supply and demand wouldn't support olive oil if it was hand pressed only.
Nick Stellino has a cooking show on "Create". He's Sicilian. I recall one thing he said on one of his shows, "The best olive oils have a slightly sweet taste." I remember my Sicilian grandmother. Even during WWII she had olive oil sent to her from Sicily. It was superb for her sauce, which was outstanding and great for dipping. I remember the olive oil she had wasn't oily, had a nice smooth flavor and it wasn't peppery.
Sooooo glad you ladies are still rocking the show👍👍😊!

Very informative. I really enjoy your videos, keep them coming!
I'm using a lot of olive oil grown and bottled here in southern Mexico. I get it at the local organic market and love the taste. I use it in place of butter and drink it during the day from tablespoons.
lol, who told you to drink oil?
I've been using the California Olive Ranch olive oil for years and even though Ina Garten recommends something else (LOL) (much more expensive and hard to find) this is definitely my go to for everything. I'm happy to see the experts agree! Love your videos and watching you on Create TV.
It would have been interesting if you sent samples to universities to perform tests on the authenticity of the EVOs

There are labs that are certified for testing olive oils by the international olive council (ioc). These labs have very specialized equipment and have trained tasters (like myself) that determine if oils have any levels of defects.
2 years late, but according to the review they have! They sent it to the official olive oil council which said that all but 2 were disappointing and had critical flaws. They also sent them to a lab (in another tasting I believe) to test for if they were extra virgin or not (which was defined by certain amounts of aromatic compounds I believe)
Interesting, will try the top 2. Thank you for posting interesting taste tests.
I'm excited. That's the one I buy for everyday! Thanks for your great show. I love it! 💚
They should definitely redo this test now that the main offering from California Olive Ranch is the “Destination Series” which is a blend from a number of different countries (and the 100% California olive oil is now a premium product with a pretty label so they can charge more for the same olive oil they were already selling.)

I've tried many and tend to gravitate to Cento. The EV has a nice, snappy olive taste and their regular olive oil I find great for general cooking. Priced right as well.
I've been using the Cento for some time now, really like it. I got it cause it was on sale, but, I remembered, it is one of the sponsors of Lidia's kitchen on PBS.
I just bought a bottle of the California Olive Ranch oil based on this video. It says 100% California on the front label, a sticker on the front, on the back label, and has a number of certification seals on it, and a Dec '19 harvest date.

In the past year, I have switched to the California oil based on ATK's recommendation and like it very much but, I would have liked to see my previous favorite, Colavita, included in this taste test.
Colavita Premium Selection Extra Virgin Olive Oil came in 6th of the 11 oils tested, and got a "Recommended" rating. They wrote, " 'Mild, buttery, neutral, not superdistinctive, but perfectly fine,' this 'gently peppery' oil was described as 'middle of the road,' 'smooth,' and 'subtle,' whether it was on beans or dressing a salad."

@@eugenesedita Yes it was. It got a "Recommended" rating.
Love these video taste testing. Thanks
When this test was conducted, California Olive Ranch really was purely from California. I know that because I always bought it. In the ensuing months, it is now blended with oils from other countries, sorry to say, probably to keep the price steady.
UPDATE: the California version is now available in the New York City metro area, and that’s what I’ve been buying. Definitely a higher-quality product than the other mass market brands.
Yup...I smelled the difference right away...they fucked it up.
The reason they sourced olives from other countries was because of the poor olive harvest last year in California. Hopefully things will return to normal this year. As far as olive oil is concerned.
@@derfnoslein1178 I cant see them going back to more expensive olives...once they go cheaper that's it.
Oh their own locally grown California olives are less costly and usually higher quality. You have to add transportation costs to the imported stuff as well.
No they take pride in their product and have noted all the complaints. I think they will return to standards with next harvest.
I’ve used the California Oil since they’re last test. Very good, not all that expensive either.
I'm a fan of ATK; RECIPES, EQUIPMENT Evaluations; Taste tests...I bought some cookbooks and continue to follow your C re are and PBS shows... Thanks mucho!!!
Yes! Just bought my first bottle of California Olive Ranch! Delicious! Excellent taste with that bit of peppery slight burn at the end. I have found my forever Olive Oil.
I'm an EVOO snob, having worked in a boutique. California Olive Ranch is an extraordinary, lovely domestic oil. I've used it since it launched.
i dont care for the taste of grass. prefer oils from older trees and old school.
@@horsepastetosy2587
They have a variety of oils, all different.
Such as the Greek Koroneiki olive, some olives import a grassy quality, some peppery, others buttery, etc. The process is of utmost importance, though, and theirs is solid.
You are correct about age. One reason Cali oils are finally becoming worthwhile is that the trees are finally coming of age!
@@BantiarnaMacRaghnaill Stage of ripeness tends to give more to the flavour than age of the tree. Old trees, old vines are marketing ploys.
Early harvested fruit tends towards green (think Vinho Verde) whilst very mature fruit (think German late harvested grapes) is softer.
ycart tosy, if you don’t like grassy tasting olive oil then don’t buy Italian olive oil because that’s the prominent note from Italian olive oil.
i started looking at that brand a few years ago because of ATK recommendation. but i have never seen a bottle that was harvested less than a year before i was purchasing it.
I was using an olive oil and then I purchased California Olive ranch several years ago and The taste difference was transformingly amazing!

I used to buy half liter bottles of California EVOO at Aldi---unfortunately no longer sold there. I refuse to buy their other so-called olive oils bec they are too low-priced to be trusted so I've had to do without.
@@rolex84 Yea, I wrote them an email and they said they had problems with supply of domestic sources They do still carry the foreign blend "Destination" so look for "Every Day". Your very welcome.
Only the destination series comes from other parts of the world. I only buy the 100% California. Says so on the front label.
I really like Pompeiian olive oil on veggies and salads. It smells and tastes a little fruity, like raspberries. But I use avocado oil for most cooking because it has a higher smoke point.
I did a similar test of 7 different olive oils; California, Tuscany, Spain, Morocco, Greece, Sicily and Lebanon. Certainly was not a benchmark because within each of these countries there are many olive producers. It was a blind test and remarkably the Sicilian oil from Trader Joes was the only one that stood out. I use it exclusively now. Also the best bargain of the group.
Awesome video and thanks for sharing your tips 👍
Great Job but I live on the east coast and would have liked to see a couple more options!
I used to use California Olive ranch until they went to the "destination" series. Now I use Partanna from Sicily. It's non GMO and has the harvest date on the bottle.
Albert Motyka there are no GMO olive oil. When you buy that brand with the non- GMO label, you are essentially paying extra for the label.
Thanks for this update and clarification on the “Destination” series. I use this brand, and didn’t know this!
@Albert Motyka
Joining @Linda Hart in thanking you for the update. Sorry to hear California Olive has degraded their product.
Redd Green please do your research first. By default, olive oil is non-gmo as no olive varietals exist that are gmo. However, the reason some oils use the label are that enzymes are used during olive milling, and these can be gmo or non-gmo.
Furthermore, whether you (or the brands) like it or not, some retailers require non-gmo certification regardless of if it’s warranted or not, so some brands will obtain it because they need to in order to access the retailers they want.
MasterShake9000 The topic is Virgin Olive Oil, by convention the label Virgin Olive Oil requires that oil is processed from the olive drupes using mechanical processes only with no chemical treatment (where is the enzyme there?). Further, producers pay for the non-GMO label, which is not an insignificant cost, especially for small operations. These costs are passed on to the consumers. I do not dissuade anyone from buying non-GMO, it is their choice, but they should know that there is an extra cost for their choice.
Very informative. Thank you
I’ll look for it! Thanks for the information
Could you please make a video on balsamic vinegar taste testing?
Berio bought in the gold n yellow tin can, after opening it never lasted more than six months. Stays fresh as it is packed air tight.
Question. If you are using the oil to make a garlic confit, should you go for the best or just use a standard olive oil?
Thanks for the heads up.
I bought some California Olive Ranch a couple years ago after seeing it highly rated on several sites, I was not disappointed. It turned out I had never tasted good olive oil before, as I had been buying a very cheap brand for years. First off I noticed it smelled fruity I thought, and just tasted good. I keep running out as I now use it on so many things.
Granted California Olive Ranch is good👍 But Carapelli is better😋
@@DangerousParent I'd like to try it but i haven't seen it in the store here, also i noticed prices have sky rocketed, and California Olive Ranch is the most i will pay.
@@MaxStax1 "Skyrocketing prices," yep👍 The only grocers here selling Carapelli are Kroger's, it's a-dollar more and worth every penny: one of my guilty pleasures😋I buy the California brand when too angry about jacked up prices to spare the extra dollar😉Fortunately I'd stocked up "On sale" before inflation hit🥲
I've always been told it depends on what you're using it for. Cooking vs Drizzling. I've been taught that for cooking you're better off with a cheaper oil.
From a money standpoint, a cheaper oil makes sense, but from a culinary standpoint there's no reason to not always use good EVOO. I like having fewer bottles with fresher oils in my cupboards. See: ruclips.net/video/l_aFHrzSBrM/видео.html
Excellent and very accurate information! Bravo ATK!!
We tried a lot of Extra Virgin olive oils, both domestic and imported over the years looking for a good one. Only a year or so ago we decided the best EVO we had tried was the same as your winner, California Olive Ranch. Excellent.
Her reaction when he "aspirates" the oil was my exact reaction.
If you come to Italy this is how we taste the oils!
Me too!
I'm so glad they did this taste test. I am so overwhelmed with the choices. Thanks 😊
Be aware that this test is from 2017, and things do change with time. The winner in this test, for example, has been discontinued and replaced with a multi-source equivalent. ATK plans to do a new test in a few months. (In the interim, they tested the new California Olive Ranch "Everyday" oil, and still recommend it.)
Thank you 😊 Glad for the education.
The California olive oil is the one I have used for years. Glad to know I picked a good oil. Thanks.
9 TIMES OUT OF 10 THE VIDS HERE, AND THE SHOWS, ARE SPOT ON WITH MY TASTES. THANKS!
Hello. I just went to my Supermarket today and found the recommended California Olive Ranch extra virgin olive oil but it was labeled Destination Series and the label says that it came from four different countries (California, Argentina, Chile and Portugal). There were 4 different varieties including the everyday version). Can you clarify why this information on different from that of the video (the country of origin)?
Thanks
Pretty sure California isn't a country!
Craig Spiegel California used to be single sourced but maybe due to costs changed to destination series which I no longer buy and am still looking for an affordable single sourced brand. Going carnivore I cook more with butter but will use olive oil cold for flavor
Craig Spiegel
Yes, that’s just another choice. Clearly stated and dated too.
Demand forced them to come out with their blend, Destination. But they still sell several varieties of their purely Calif. oils, Everyday, Arboquina, Arbosana, Robust and 1 or 2 more. Go to their website or to Walmart on-line and order it. You can get single bottles or 6 packs. This seems to be one of the few that can be trusted without it costing an arm & a leg. We know now to always look at the label.
I see people upset about CA Olive's Destination series. They new oils are clearly labeled on the front of the bottles with the countries names. If you don't want a mixed oil buy the one the test kitchen recommends it's 100% from CA. No one is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. It's very clear which ones of their oils is from a variety of countries.
Madre Sicilia and Al Koura are my go-to’s. I keep the Sicilian for Sicilian specialties and the Lebanese one for general application. Of course both are huge containers but in my home we go through a couple liters per month.
Looking at your name I can see why but I would never use that much olive oil in even couple of months I use more avocado oil van EVOO
I wish you would have sampled Costco's brand, Kirkland.
I agree, they’re constantly sleeping on the Costco brand and they do a very good job of sourcing their Kirkland brand. I’ve always gotten excellent evoo there. The last time I purchased oil there they didn’t have the Kirkland brand but they had one called Tasso which was also excellent.
Kirkland is in a clear plastic container. They said it should be in a coloured bottle.

Haven't watched yet but my vote is definitely for California Olive Ranch! It's what I always use and recommend.

I love pompeian oils and vinegars… I have not tried this California oil, but will try it. As an aside when on trips to chile we were treated at wineries to a lot of oils and vinegars we ate with bread. Best I have ever had, because it was seriously fresh from the source.
By sheer coincidence, California Olive Ranch is what I buy. I found it at my local Wegmans, liked the taste, and have been using it ever since.
California olive oil manufacturers are trying to replicate the success the state's wineries had versus the European brands. It is good.

I now use California Olive Ranch oils exclusively and I love them. At first it was all pure Calif. olives, then they came out with a blend, Destination, Argentina, Chile, Portugal & Calif. olives. But they offer a half dozen oils that are purely from Calif. olives, Arboquina, Arbosana, Robust, Everyday. They also sell an Olive/Avocado mix oil but it is with the mix of olives.
Sadly the Everyday series of oils have been replaced with the Destination series, which comes from different countries.
Hello, I enjoyed the olive oil comparison. Thanks
I know now what to look for in olive oil. Thanks
Watching this a year later, the California Olive Ranch one has been discontinued due to "the state [CA] could not produce enough olives to meet demand" so they get the same style oil from Portugal, Chile, and Argentina and mix that oil with what little they can get from California for a replacement I'm not sure it's Product name from California Olive Ranch, I had Bertolli the 3rd in this segment but now I think they consider it #2 due to some recent quality improvements. This always happens with all products, Beard shavers, Microwaves & washing machines, they make one good run then once people hear about it they switch to lower cost versions and coast on the one good run.
I just bought 2 bottles from Walmart "Robust" and "Butter" from california olive branch. Best I ever had. (4th time I bought this brand and I live in Ca.)If you shop hard enough you can get the str8 up CA oil and not their destination blend. Bertolli is over processed.

I've recently done some research on RUclips concerning olive oils. I found that many brands are fake or adulterated. I found the California Ranch brand and it is a wonderful tasting pure evoo.
Wao what difference, Thanks .
Best consistent olive oils for the western Canadian market are coming out of California. They seem to have a more honest approach to olive oils.
I would have liked to have heard more about a larger number of Olive oils. They didn't even mention that some oils are not 100 percent olive oil. I heard that awhile back. You'd have thought they would have addressed that.
His tip on looking for country of origin can help avoid this issue. Even better look for varieties or singular varieties on the bottle. Common varieties in Spain for example are Hojiblanca, arbequina, cornicabra and picual. Just like you would look for a wine that had merlot grapes;) Always look for extra virgin olive oil. Good luck!
That omission jumped out at me also, since it's been fairly widely reported that even high-end products at pricey, allegedly health-conscious stores have been found to be adulterated with poor-quality oils. There's even an outfit (olive oil hunters?) that sells subscribers quarterly shipments at about $40/bottle after screening producers in person. Taste guidelines provided in this video may be useful, but there are serious health benefits to using good olive oil....
A couple of years ago now I read a story about olive oil cartels & how they were mixing & adding to cheaper oils & passing them off as pure. The article said that in the supermarket the only 2 brands not involved in this cartel were Californian & Pompeian. I’ve only used these two since although I prefer the Californian in salads or a drizzle...either good for cooking lower temperature foods. Although the claim is that olive oil can cook up to 350, I only use it for lower temps.
My preference has always been Spanish olive oil. But in pinch Italian or Californian. We have an excellent variety of competent brands.
Yes, the best olive oil does come from Spain.
Which brands do you recommend?
Team Spain
Why can I only find the California "Destination Series" in stores now? I started buying this brand because it was U.S. produced and single-source, but now they're sourcing their olives from three different South American countries.
Because the stores only stock what will sell to their customers . If you cannot sell the premium Cal produced oil , sell the imported blend . It is not the producer , it is the customer that demands cheap goods .
Love it to know about this imformation...cuze is hard to choose the right olive oil and good quality to cook with... or just to have when you need it for whatever you need it. Thank you! 😊 by the way I love your show!
Recently just added the California OO to our pantry as I actually had a near identical experience to Julia's. And thought wow, that's good for a non- Italia oil! lol.
I'm pretty sure they did purity tests on extra virgin olive oils and Whole Foods and Trader Joe's were both near the top along with Kirkland brand, all of them at relatively low cost.
The Trader Joes extra virgin is the closest thing I have found to what I can get in the Mediterranean countries. That California brand they touted is meh.....Also they criticized oils coming from different countries. Well, Spain produces inexpensive oil, so other countries such as Italy will buy from Spain and bottle it in their own countries. That doesn't mean the quality of the oil is not good, so that guy is wrong about that. Also some oils are really underrated. For example, olive oil from Tunisia which is cheap and flavorful.
@@jaime8318 I don't think he said oil from other countries is bad, rather one bottle made from olives from many countries. But if the oil is from other countries you lose freshness because of time getting here.
