  • It's an empire built on testing new dishes and putting kitchen gadgets through their paces, using both staff chefs and food stylists, as well as 17,000 volunteer cooks from around the country to test recipes. America's Test Kitchen, based in Boston, is featured in two TV shows, magazines and books, and has built its success one meal at a time. It's paid a visit by Martha Teichner who, like their ravenous viewers, truly eats up their advice.

    ATK and Cook's Country are my version of Saturday morning cartoons. That is to say, as a kid I looked forward to Saturday morning cartoon with great anticipation. Now as an adult, it's ATK and Cook's Country (plus This Old House and Ask This Old House) that have me glued to the TV every Saturday morning. I could binge watch all those shows and be a very happy camper.

      Same here. The Food Network has turned into nothing but sports and games with food. I don't want that! Just give me good old food recipes, tips and food related products advice and suggestions.
      A truly great recipe starts with quality ingredients. Essentially, the same can be said about a good foodie show and ATK has all that.

    America's test kitchen has two hundred employees? No wonder PBS is always asking for more{ dough}

      They don't depend on PBS for funding, two magazines and cooking books. Heres a quote from wiki. "Kimball was a co-founder and has been editor and publisher of America's Test Kitchen, which produces television and radio shows, and publishes magazines, including Cook's Illustrated,[6] which Kimball launched in 1993. It also publishes Cook's Country magazine, which was launched in 2004,[1]. The company's revenue comes from its readers, rather than advertisers, which differentiates them from the competitors"

    I was waiting to see how Dr. Praegers did! I haven’t tried them yet, but Dr. Praeger’s “All American Drive Thru” burgers are my current favorite fake burger and I live off them. I eat meat, but I don’t miss it with these. I’m not into the weird genetic anomalies that are beyong and impossible, but Dr. Praegers makes a great thin patty burger that really hits the notes of beef without just being fake smoke flavoring added to cardboard like so many. And the texture is great. I just love them.

    I’ve been a fan since the beginning. I get the magazine and use their recommendations when making purchases. Since kimball left, I am less fond of the show. It lost a lot of what it was that drew me in.

    Nice piece but it did start out slow. I'm glad I stuck with it. A good insight on a very trusted food/recipe & kitchen/grilling equipment institution of major importance. All the Best...All the Time. RMH/Ohiio

      I thought he started the whole empire back in 1980, so was confused why he'd be forced out. I know it happens with corporations, etc. (Papa John's Pizza), but still wasn't clear as to why Mr. Kimble had to go. Thanks.@@madthumbs1564

    ATK, Cooks Country, and Steven Raichlen are the only three cooking shows worth recording these days. Made the Cast Iron Baked Chicken recipe and it was delicious! Would like to see Chris come back.
