My high school in San Francisco was next to the Ghirardelli chocolate factory, and I can still remember the smell that permeated the building once in a while. At 17 it put me in a good mood. So Ghirardelli is my favorite

I don’t know why they even put Hershey in the taste test it’s inexpensive chocolate that your mother could afford to serve to a crowd when camping or having sleepovers and it’s never had a reputation for being quality chocolate and I don’t know why they included chocolate that costs $18 a pound in this test either. They should have included brands that are more affordable and obtainable at your local grocery store in the candy and baking aisle like the brands that you mentioned.

I'm surprised how annoyed I've been since watching this, since I know it's not actually that serious a thing. But if I'm looking for the best milk chocolate, why would I pick the one that even the judges said doesn't taste like milk chocolate, but like dark chocolate. If you would think that it was dark chocolate if someone didn't tell you it was labeled milk chocolate, then it's not the best milk chocolate.
If I were wanting dark chocolate taste, wouldn't I buy dark chocolate? Shouldn't the winner of best milk chocolate actually be milk chocolate, rather than dark chocolate or bitter- or semi-sweet chocolate? It seems like there was some category fraud going on here, with some brands mis-categorizing their chocolate, but I'd have hoped the judging panel would have weeded that out (maybe including the non-milk chocolates as recommended with reservations). It seems like something is sub-optimal with the judging when a customer who wants the best (actual) milk chocolate would need to go to the fourth or fifth entry on the full list before reaching an actual milk chocolate. And, the actual best milk chocolates (that are recognizably milk chocolates) aren't the ones featured on the show. I've finished venting now, thanks.

What kind of a testing was this? No cleansing of the palate between sampling? The whole concept was poorly constructed. This test should be for which grocery store MILK chocolate bar tastes best, not which one tastes closest to bittersweet. Bittersweet is already a distinct category. If I want the bittersweet ratio of sugar to cacao, I'd select among them, not choose a milk chocolate that comes closest to the bittersweet proportions. Also the sample selection (as it has been for a long time now on ATK) is severely restricted to three. Couldn't the much more common milk chocolate bars such as Dove, Cadbury, Nestle, Lindt and Ghirardelli, be compared to Hershey.

Cadbury in the USA is actually just Hershey which bought the name/right to make/distribute in the US. Hershey felt so threatened by the British version that they actually made it illegal to import the British version. For me it’s a night and day difference in that one taste just like I am literally eating a bar of sugar versus actually tasting chocolate. But then again I grew up in the land down under so I am probably more use to the British version of the chocolate treat.

I didn't like dark chocolate either as a kid for that reason (also I got a nasty headache from eating it). I learned later in life that the higher cacao percentages are the ones that aren't good. The lower ones aren't that bad, but they don't compare to milk chocolate, or even white chocolate, which does taste good if you pair it with vanilla or eat it with sea salt or some kind of fruit [I prefer pears and berries].

Interesting that they didn't address the major differences between American and European chocolate; Butyric acid which makes American chocolate, especially Hersheys, have that tart taste that people say is reminiscent of vomit. Lots of other American chocolate and candy companies have added it to mimic Hershey's so it's difficult to find a large non artisanal brand in America that doesn't taste like that. European chocolate is far less pungent and more milky and smooth tasting.
In my opinion I can't even stomach American chocolate, and it's what I grew up with. With my whole life I just hated chocolate and people always thought I was crazy, but chocolate cake, ice cream, chocolate chip cookies... nope. I hate it.
I actually enjoy certain European chocolates and candies like Cadbury bubbles. I realized I didn't hate chocolate, I just really don't like American chocolate with butyric acid and it soured me on the stuff permanently and I've been learning to enjoy it now that I'm older and have access to different kinds.
Sp hopefully this helps someone who is from America and hates Hershey's and thinks chocolate is gross... you're not wrong or crazy, it's not you... it actually does taste like vomit. Butyric acid is in vomit, parmesan cheese and a bunch of other non-chocolate stuff.

Lindt might make the best milk chocolate truffles, the red ones, but their milk chocolate bar is no match for Cadbury's. And I expected Lindt to be the superior bar, but no. Ghirardelli's always had an odd chocolate flavor, I rate it at the bottom of all. Dove is decent, but it's main feature is how fast it melts in your mouth. Ritter is meh. I would like to see exactly how they did the test with the audiance so the Endangered Species came out on top. I trust Julia's palate. If she says it's waxy, it's waxy. Why would anyone vote to eat a candle, even a chocolate one.
