During the pandemic, our local grocery stores were frequently out of JIF, but the Skippy shelf remained full. I think JIF definitely wins the popularity contest in our locality; despite the fact that there seem to be 50 different nut butters available.

@@Goobie77 I remember it well. I had just bought three large jars for my pantry. But I was not referring to those days in my comment. The problem persists to this day every time there is a rush on pantry staples - such as just before a snow storm. The JIF jars disappear and the SKIPPY jars remain. It just seems like JIF is, locally, the more popular brand.

There is another important distinction they neglected to mention between both the "natural" with palm oil and "traditional" with hydrogenated oil vs the ones that are just ground peanuts: dry roasting. If it doesn't say "dry roasted", it means the peanuts were cooked in oil and essentially fried. This can really change the flavor and satiety one might come to expect if they were raised on non-dry roasted peanut butter, like I suspect most of us were. I've actually gotten quite used to the natural dry-roasted peanut butters they grind fresh at my local natural grocery store as they have such an intense peanut flavor and are healthier. However, they will admittedly never give me quite the same sense of satisfaction as the more ubiquitous ones I grew up with and especially with a father that would only allow classic Jif in his house.

I started eating Teddies natural PB to get away from the sweet hydrogenated PB (Skippy) that I grew up with. I love, peanut butter. But I don't want it sweetened or hydrogenated. You don't have to have a runny mess with natural PB, if you let it sit and when the oil separates, pour a little bit off. After a while you'll learn how much oil to discard but still keep your PB malleable. I now buy Teddies, "unsalted" crunchy PB and to me it's absolutely the best. I must have it daily, yum!!!

In Canada, I have always used Kraft . The one closest to your hydrogenated salted sugared is what I grew up with. It is called Kraft Smooth Peanut Butter. Some years ago I switched to Kraft Unsweetened Unsalted Peanut Butter. I wanted to avoid the salt and sugar. In the past two years, I now MIX the original salty sugared, with the unsweetened unsalted, AND an organic crunchy. I get some texture, a bit of salt, its thinner, than the original, but not the runny mess of the all natural. I pour off the head of oil into a separate jar, and use it for frying, and that flavour is amazing. The first two jars go into a stand mixer, and get a good beating, then the crunchy goes in, and stirred just enough to get it all to blend. All goes back into the original jars, and into the fridge. Low salt, low sugar, tons of flavour, with a little crunch ! Yes, you will have a little extra... because of some incorporated air... time for a sammy... I am getting hungry...

Koeze's Cream-Nut Smooth natural peanut butter from Grand Rapids MI is the best. It's a natural butter - Virginia peanuts and salt only - with big peanut flavor. I mix it and store it in the fridge so it doesn't separate. Just 15-20 secs in the micro and it's perfectly spreadable. The smooth version has a very fine texture of peanuts so it's not completely smooth.

I wouldn’t mind the peanut butter I have to stir so much if they provided more room at the top of the jar for proper stirring. So many brands fill it to the top so when it is stirred it spills out down the sides and on to the counter.

Candy used to be made with palm oil until the soybean and canola lobby kicked them out. More saturated fatty acids I believe. Tastewise, I think it's superior to other vegetable or seed oils. It's also great on your skin.

Hydrogenated oil developed by General Foods for their dry mix products involves bubbling Hydrogen through Soybean oil that creates Omega 5 that the body has to convert to make use, but the process often does not complete which leads to harmful trans fats.

I grew up eating Skippy b/c that's what mom bought. But I have been buying my own for over 30 years and it is always Smuckers. I like that there is only peanuts and salt. It's messy to eat, but I'm not getting any sugar or artificial crap. And forget about the sandwiches. I just eat it straight from the jar with a spoon.
