The winner is canned at Furmano's in Northumberland Pa. They process plum tomatoes for this label. The SMT branding was done on to make you think you are buying San Marzano Tomatoes. I worked there from 2010-2014.
Interesting, thanks.
OP - Any chance they package the same tomatoes the same way under another name?
Awesome. I love Furmanos!
I swear by Tuttoroso. So good, whole, crushed diced, sauce, paste. All SO GOOD
Been wondering if those are good.
@@klkiley2922 the whole line is great. Whole tomatoes, crushed, paste all great!
I've never seen this brand in the stores.
@@sukioki6983 I live in the northeast USA....they are in most supermarkets here
They always pick the one that nobody can buy in their local markets and that costs $$$$.
I so love the test kitchen. Thanks for your work in getting the right recipes.
Love Brigette! So funny! Have loved watching her sample food for years.
Me 45 days ago:" Shelter in place will give me plenty of time to catch up on those projects. I'll fill my time."
Me today:" I'm watching a canned tomato comparison"
#metoo 😉
Right!
Soy sauce too 😂 I’m in!
Me too!
Going stir crazy, aren’t we!
Hunt's was the brand used by my mom and family decades ago. When I make certain old family recipes, I find I also must use Hunt's to recreate the taste I remember. I miss Hunt's tomato juice in a can. I don't know why it was discontinued.
I always appreciate you doing the testing-it saves me money! Well done! You have my trust. 👍
In my own personal 'taste test' the Cento brand San Marzano whole tomatoes are far and beyond the best! Even if I need crushed
tomatoes I will use these and crushed the whole tomatoes for my recipes. The flavor is intense, somewhat sweet, rich, thick... every-
thing I want in a tomato sauce. A little pricier than most brands but well worth it!
All the cento products are excellent that’s all I use if I’m gonna buy hunts it’s gonna be ketchup
Agree
Cento or Mutti for me.
Muir Glen does actually make crushed tomatoes with no basil. I wonder how those would have performed. I'm personally a fan of Redpack. And actually, the house brands from Kroger and Whole Foods aren't bad either, not to mention they're easy on the wallet.
YES! REDPACK is the best. Can't get them in South Florida.
The last time I made spaghetti sauce I used the Whole Foods store brand for all three canned tomato ingredients in the recipe (crushed, sauce, paste). I have used the same recipe for years but tried different brands of canned tomatoes, not using the same brand every time. The Whole Foods brand made the spaghetti sauce very bitter, so much so that I didn't bother saving the leftover portion. One of the best results I've had was when I used Hunt's brand canned tomato products in the recipe.
@@Runningfromtheherd It is my understanding that the brands Tuttorosso and Red Gold crushed tomatoes are claimed to be the same as Red Pack, just marketed under different names. All three are supposedly made in the same plants in the Midwest. So this could be a regional marketing difference. I live in the South and Tuttorosso canned tomato products are available where I shop.
My mom was a fan of Redpack. I will buy them occasionally or whatever is on sale. Tuttorosso is good, and is from the company that makes Redpack
I always thought Muir Glen was a good choice, and still do. I just don't understand why they chose to use the one with Basil when they CLEARLY don't want basil in the taste test, Muir Glen has a variety of products to choose from. Simply buying something with basil means you normally don't have or want it on hand, but want to use it once in a long while, so you use that.
This taste test made no sense to me at all.
Came here to say this. The plain Muir Glen crushed tomatoes are really the superior choice, easily beating SMT in my personal taste tests.
@@johnnygraz4712 👍
Hello, I really enjoy your channel. Lots of information!
I've been buying this brand at Safeway (on the West Coast) for several years. They have the whole rang --, whole, crushed etc., and they're all good. Nice to see your tasters and your professionals agree. ;)
I have SMT in my supermarket, but I actually prefer Cento San Marzano tomatoes. They taste as if they're barely cooked, and while they come packed with basil, the flavor is very subtle.
I was going to make a similar comment. They are wonderful! The Cento San Marzano... they cost more but well worth it.
Is Cento the one in the yellow can? On the note of basil, I feel like it's almost always subtle, but I guess it varies
Agree, this is the only brand I buy
@@cynthiaromero2658 agreed and the Cento brand wasn't part of the test? Odd. But check SMT brand label it says San Marzano style. but in the ingredients it only says tomatoes.
@@cynthiaromero2658 Cento also makes non-certified or something other tomatoes without Basil. They taste the same to me only without Basil. I buy both at Stater Bros. in SoCal. Both taste raw which is great on pizza but not so much in other dishes that rely upon a cooked sauce but when cooked into a Marinara sauce they are tasty .
I love these videos, I love their magazine!!!!
Love these taste test. Thanks
As usual, that's an interesting and informative test.
I'd love to see you folks do a test on whole tomatoes. I've hear so much about the D.O.P. San Marzano canned tomatoes from well-known chefs that I'm wondering whether it's really worth it or whether those particular tomatoes are actually as good as many claim.
Thanks for your many helpful posts. Cheers.
SMT is the brand I use also. Glad to know ATK agrees! You can really taste the difference - even between it and other high quality brands. I’m on the west coast and they have them at my corner market.
You are always the best in what you bring to us keep it up i would like to see something on noodles good and bad
I enjoy Jack Bishop's analysis.
I literally have tried every single brand offered in the 7 grocery stores in my area. SMT was my fave as well. Who knew?
I've used SMT many times and they do give a wonderful base to begin with or just as they are out of the can.
I“ Shluttered”when I heard her say “soldered” 😬😬😬
Mmmm lead.
Until this moment this woman never heard the word nor read solder/ soldered. I have seen mooks spell it like it's pronounced , sodder [ˈsädər ]. The Brits use to pronounce it sooder. I bet though she does not pronounce salmon ~ sal -mon or castle ~ cas tle . Silent L's & T's....crazy engrish.
American English pronunciation has more mispronunciation than people think. It usually occurs regionally. "Saul dur" is never correct for "Saw dur" it's just misunderstanding the word "Solder." Americans pejorate tons of words. Cellulite as fat cells, are currently pronounced "Sell YOU lite". That's incorrect, it's "Sell you leet", "sell you lite" is insulating material.
"Meh zo thee lee Oma" is actually "Mee zo Thee Lee oma". Americans love to change words because of lazy pronunciation. Like, you know what I mean, ya know?
They find a way to destroy a lot of words on this show.
@@Pete_952 saul-dur/soul-dur is correct and accepted in the UK. Why are you saying it's an American pronunciation issue?
red gold are my favorite!
Barber0611: Mine too. Are you from the Midwest?

I would have liked to see more brands tried. My favorite for flavor has always been cento. I will try the SMT if I can find it. And compare.
Would love to see you compare the winner to a California organic brand I recently discovered named Bianca Dinapoli. They’ve so much flavor and natural sweetness that I switched from Muir Glen (I liked the added basil).
Hold up! Are those M & M cookies in the background??? I want one!!!
Just watched the new episode of Good Eats, about chicken parm, which includes info about San Marizano tomato and that in the US it's basically all for marketing, not enforced. Kinda interesting stuff.
They can say San Marzano style but like Cento actually says San Marzano Tomatoes that means they are grown in the San Marzano region of Italy! When the brand tries to sneak one in on you they lose me as a customer forever! Hate that BS! Have to read the labels!
My favorite crushed/ground tomatos of all time are the cans of 7/11 made by Stanislaus out of California. Absolutely favorite tomato flavor. It's generally only available through food service wholesale outlets, but totally worth going out of your way to get in my opinion.
I love America's Test Kitchen
I usually use a house brand on sale and store them. Then I add my own seasonings and spices. I grow my own herbs then dry them in the fall to use during winter. I splurge now and again and get San marzano. BTW you're the cutest Bridget!!! 💟💋
Good informative video! Thanks.
I did like the information comparing thank you
My grandmother’s sister used to cut vegetables in southern NJ in the 1910s. From her stories a lot of young girls and women worked for them. It’s funny you would think it would be an awful job but she really likes working there. She also had amazing knife skills and could chop up any vegetable very quickly.
You should test Red Gold from Indiana, they are outstanding
Those are my favorite. That's what I would use when I lived there.
I just took a look at the full write-up on the tastings. They tasted (and recommended) Red Pack, which they noted is sometimes sold as Red Gold. It was also the cheapest of the brands. Now that I know it has a different name, I'll see if it's sold on the east coast.
@@NotContinuum FYI, RedGold is also sold as Tuttorosso brand.
Agreed, thats what I get. I always look for Red Gold, packed not far from home.
You ever been to their plant? It's a case of the plant being built and a town coming up around it in the middle of a huge cornfield. I drove a truck and had to find that damn place to pick up a load from there at night!
I really like the SMT brand. Will always reach for this brand when I can't find the San Marzano DOP.
Love those girls..great program...my favorite cook show..HATS OFF TO YOU LADIES..!!
Two favorite hosts. Like hair and makeup adjustments. Nice presentation..
S&W Premium Crushed Tomatoes in Rich Puree... best I've ever used!👍🍅
Yes, Smith & Wesson! They also made my Revolvers!
I can my own from the garden so I'm spoiled. Still keep some Hunt's on hand for long cooking sauces since I like it when it's even more concentrated.
Try Contadina. It beats Hunts by a league.
For everyone complaining that only Hunts is the only recognizable brand in this video, the link in the description lists a few more brands that are more widely available than the SMT crushed tomatoes they recommended. (Red Pack, Cento, Contadina, and Pastene.)
We don't have SMT here in North Carolina 😔 I usually just buy San Marzanos and do whatever I need to with them - dice, fine dice, chop, puree etc
The Harris teeter store brand ones are really good and cheap.
I get them at Safeway. If you don’t have a Safeway in your area Safeway also owns Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb, Carrs, Albertsons, ACME, Jewel-Osco, Lucky, Shaw's, Star Market, Super Saver, United Supermarkets, Market Street and Amigos.
Pa. & NJ has the best summer for growing tomatoes
YOU GUYS ROCK
$3.50 a can?! I can use fresh tomatoes cheaper than that. I will stick with my $1 Contadina (Del Monte?).
Not surprised but disappointed that Red Gold wasn't included. I find them excellent and when they go on sale, we stock WAAAYYYY up on them. I strain them for pizza sauce and when I make spaghetti and a little splatters on the floor from stirring I have a hard time not dropping on all fours and licking it off the floor. I don't but mostly because the dog beats me to it.
Interesting. I am a gardener and I purchased seeds from Rutgers for the original Jersey tomatoes,...Rutgers and Campbell’s KC146. The Campbells tomato was grown for them exclusively and valued for its taste and reliability. I have been growing Rutgers for years because of its rich taste. Unfortunately as time went by producers wanted tomatoes that shipped better and had more disease resistance (and consequently had tougher skin.) Luckily these and a few others were bred back to their original state. It is part of the “Rediscover the Jersey Tomato “ project. Look it up. Totally worth it.
Please test peeled pomodoro that's my favorite to cook with I have my favorites but I'd love to see what you guys come up with watch your show all the time wouldn't miss it for the world
Love you vids👍
Why do these taste tests always seem to have regional brands that can’t be found everywhere?
Other than Hunts, I've never seen any of these brands either. Even in a specialty shop.
I live by Philadelphia, 10mi from Jersey, and have never seen the winner that uses PA, NJ & OH tomatoes, here or in western PA. I shop at large stores and small markets, though no super-Italian ones where I might find actual SMT (San Marzano tomatoes).
@@armeyf go to whole foods

Hello. I love Test Kitchen
Never seen the winner but I can settle for 2nd place, thanks
SMT is Sold at whole foods
These videos are addicting
I've never heard of the winning brand of tomatoes. Finding decent tomato products nowadays not easy. Thank you for this video
The canner is in Pennsylvania and the tomatoes are from New Jersey. New Jersey apparently is known for producing good tomatoes. A lot of the acclaimed pizza shops in New Jersey, New York City and New Haven use New Jersey tomatoes. When I was in college I heard constantly about how New York has the best pizza and it's because of New York City tap water and New Jersey tomatoes.
I’m always learning from ATK, always!
I live in PA and never heard of the brant from here! I use hunts because it is consistent in quality and never watery. The past doe not taste pasty.
Great video
Wow, I never heard of SMT-not sold in my grocery store. I wish Cento had been in the test.
Apparently, people don't realize you can follow the link in the description to see the full lineup of the taste test, which included several more brands.
For a good choice that's widely available, Hunt's is a great brand. Their ingredients list crushed tomatoes. If you read the ingredients of many brands, the first two are tomato paste and water.
Haven’t spotted SMT yet at my grocery store. Will be definitely on the lookout for it. I love you America’s Test Kitchen. You make shopping so much easier for us . I note down all the products recommended by you and buy only those. Thanks s lot🙏🏽
I'll have to look for and try SMT. But I always buy San Marzano DOP.
I like America`s Test Kitchen. it`s the best most informative cooking show on!!. Keep up the good work.
At my supermarket, I generally find that Hunts is the best quality/price canned tomato, and have to wonder why they would use Muir Glen's tomato with basil, when it is readily available without...
Wrong imo. Contadina, ty me later.
where is Red gold/redpack? Why did you leave your runner up out of the video?
Get yourself a partner the way Bridget looks at crushed tomatoes
I like Red Gold and Muir Glen (minus the basil). The Muir Glen fire roasted diced tomatoes are SOOOOOO good!
Muir Glen fire roasted for the win!
I buy the Muir Glen fire-roasted crushed tomatoes by the case. They are my go-to for everything (unlike basil in every application, I DO want the fire-roasted flavor in every application lol)
I've never even heard of the SMT brand. Don't think it's even available in my area.
It's at Whole Foods Market or any natural food store.
We have them out here in CA. They are sold right next to Centos at Sprouts. However, real San Marzanos are never sold in diced and pureed form according to all the info I've seen and read. But I think don't SMT actually tries to claim they are real. I think the label is just a marketing thing to catch your eye so you don't read it and just assume because of the picture.
Amen_ Ra Fresh Market Stores in Central Florida sell these. We have been using them for awhile!
Available on Amazon, a little pricey.
@@chaseglaser5888 NO they don't have them in every state. You're welcome to come to Albuquerque, NM, and try and find that brand in a Whole Foods store - they don't have them.
Me: I need to learn to cook more.
**starts with watching a tomato comparison video**
Me: Still haven't learned to cook more.
Middle aged Italian American woman here, I live and breathe tomatoes ... My faves are 7/11 ground tomatoes... Not easy to get but you'll never go back. My Italian deli sells them to me. Red pack crushed is my other fave. Redpack has a clean fresh flavor. They really are the best.
That last "I'll see YOU later" at the end got me intrigued
Thank you...
Best ones I have found, that are actually not specialist, are "Parade" brand at Menard's. Most cheap tomatoes (including hunts and most store brands) often have a tiny bit of a rotten flavor to them.
Helpful
What about cantania brand(hope I spelled it,rt)? Seems they only chose one regular brand and the rest obscure ones that hardly anyone knows about.
I used to process my tomatoes with a hand-cranked "Squeezo" machine and froze the skinless and seedless results in Ziplock bags. I found I could take the frozen blocks of tomato puree, suspend them over a bowl, and a golden liquid would drain out leaving the very rich, deep red, tomato pulp in the bag.
It wasn't hard for me to guess which liquid in the video had been cooked less.
Red Gold is my favorite canned domestic, sweet with low acidity.
For imported PDO San Marzano, brands like Mutti, La Valle, or Sogno Toscano are hard to beat, but the prices are rather high. There is a lot of counterfeit brands from Italy too, companies that import tomatoes from other countries and label them as San Marzano.
Actually - the "San Marzano" can refer to a place in Italy where some small amount of Tomatoes are grown and canned ONLY WHOLE - there are no true Crushed,Paste, or Puree that is true San marzano. BUT - San marzano is also a type of Tomato seed. It is perfectly legal to use them and say so - but in Europe they cannot claim they are grown in San Marzano Italy unless they are. And the consistent winner of taste tests over the decades has been Rutgers Tomato Seeds - both Plum and Heirloom. These originate from New Jersey (Rutgers is the NJ State University) and when vine ripened they produce superior Taste and Texture. SMT Tomatoes use these and much of their tomatoes are grown in Central or Southern New Jersey. Southeast PA, and Northern Delaware. Remembering the Tomatoes came from the New World first, the idea that San Marzano Tomatoes are the "Original" tomatoes is false. In fact, the Original Canned tomatoes were from NJ.
you girls are the best,
Ha ha ha ha SODDERED!
Soddard. Not SolDard
I guess I'm a winner, I use SMT crushed tomatoes for my sauce. They do have a version with basil, but it is whole leaves of basil not dried basil.
Why include a no salt one in the test unless you require all of them to have no salt?
Of course, it would be bland.
Kind of like comparing apples and oranges same with having one with basil.
Muir Glen's organic whole tomatoes are what I keep on hand but I'll try some of those winning ones if I can find them around here. lol
In Canada, no one makes the best diced, and crushed tomatoes like Unico does. These are always my prefered canned tomatoes. Freshest tasting, not acidic and defined chunks with no excessive juice runoff.
I grow organic San Marzanos and they taste better than any other plum tomatoes. I grow mine in the winter time where I live in southwest Florida
We use red gold. They are great.
san marzano canned tomatoes are HANDS down the best.period
HANDS!
None of those are available in my area. We have aylmers, hunts, a yellow canned one i buy i forget the name, i just got one off amazon called 365 something was pretty good, and a few others. But thats good to kniw about the temp. I will check mine too for the fun.
Bummer, the Hawaii Walmart doesn't stock this brand, nor can I find any other store that does.
Never seen the brand you picked.
Redpack is my favorite. My mother made the best sauce and she only used Redpack.
I’ve never seen SMT tomatoes in any grocery store I shop at. Where can you find them?
Did you find an answer?? I'm still looking!
I've seen them listed as options online at Whole Foods and Walmart.com. Albertsons branded groceries only seem to offer them online through their home delivery channels. I've never seen them in person and I'm in the Mid-Atlantic which should be close to their packing plant.
Also any temperatures over 185F is the point that breaks down the pectin in the foods.. that is why on pickles you get crisper ones if you PASTEURIZE at 180-185F instead of regular canning at 212F
Alta Cucina is the king of tomatoes in America IMO. If I can't find those I use Cento as they're readily vailable in most areas. SMT I would have to order specially.
Nice job.
I have long been a fan of Muir Glen, which is organic and has a deep tomato flavor, better than other brands I have tried. I do avoid the "recipe-ready" products, which includes the Muir Glen you included. They do have diced tomatoes, fire-roasted crushed tomatoes, and other products that might be more appealing than the one you used, although admittedly they do not have a plain crushed tomato product without the basil. An immersion blender or food processor will quickly make the diced tomatoes a good substitute, though.
I love your videos thy are very informative, easy to understand and just the right amount of personality. Thank you for them. Now if we can the lady put the spoon in her mouth without sticking her tongue out to greet the spoon 😛 they would be perfect 👌🏻
