      Why do you say this? I'm not trying to be condescending, not at all. But how could they be not important? Why does this surprises you? I have 275 trees and while I loose money on them rather than making, I cannot imaging myself without them.

      @@ZPUTSAM yup...people here in Greece can make a living and maybe above average with at least 300-500 trees if they treat them with care and understand their nutritional needs. Based on the variety that I'm growing an olive tree will yield a good harvest every 2 years because they need to "relax" for 1 year but I'm not sure if that's for every variety

    The thing I like about Greek olive harvesting culture is the engagement of newer generations. The fact is that many families in Greece, regardless of their permanent residence, they own, somewhere, a piece of land with olive trees. Regardless of their job, age or strength, in November-December they are going to schedule some days in order to harverst their trees and get their oil for the year. And this keeps getting passed on, along with the land, to newer generations.

      Well, thats not really true that everyone regardless of what has an olive grove or land, but its actually pretty close, they have family member with olive tree land or friends, and they buy olive oil from people they trust who make it themselves

      One of the oldest in Greece is a named tree called Peisistratos' Olive, estimated to be 2.500 yrs old. It's so big a lot of people pass by it not realizing it's an olive.

      I have seen olive trees in Puglia, south east of Italy said to have been planted by greek colonists, way before the Romans, it was more like a circle of small trees where the inside had disappeared over the centuries.

    Great video, I like how they outline that the olive is not just business here. There are tons of families like mine with small groves 100-200 trees strong. Harvest season is like a mini immigration, people will swarm the country for a week or two to make the year's oil for the family.

      @@tpop3723 Many factors. We have 150 trees, and all are very young (oldest 50 ones are 15 years old). We also don't groom them professionally to produce consistently. On a good year, our 100 most productive roots will give about 7 oil bins, 17 litres each, so roughly 120 litres. Worth to mention here that olives are biennial, meaning they alternate between one productive year and a poor year.

      @@JohnYannoulas My relatives live in Lamia and they have 2 olive groves...They are starting out this year because 2 people of their family died and they had to go back on all the work..I can say that the oil that we used to get was delicious and 100% genuine....not like the one that is sold in super markets....if I didnt know better I would have thought that it could even be tampered with....at least we know the difference !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    My family is extremely fortunate here in Australia where we get annual allocations of large tins of this exact olive oil from my late grandfathers farm one hour drive from Kalamata, near Methoni. It is liquid gold and a source of extremely familial pride and a loving memory of my grandparents. No other oil comes even close to its flavour…. Yes I’m biased … ❤️

    I am half from the northern part of Peloponnese and I still recall my grandfather who used to work in the orchards and produce his own olive oil. I don't know if that olive oil is better than my grandfather's which I am grateful for still consuming yet there's nothing like fresh extracted olive oil. The aroma and the taste are just heavenly. Thank you grandfather, may you rest in peace.

      It's actually quite unpleasant. It's needs time to mellow enough to be palatable. If your preference is for extremely pungent and peppery oil, it might have some value but for the vast majority of consumers it's not a great experience.

      @@TheofilosMouratidis I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean the oil in the video? The one that made her cough? She didn't seem to enjoy that as do many of my customers that eat high polyphenol oils for the first time. Freshness matters but right out of the olive, a good oil will be unpalatable. I have access to on avg 8 different oils twice a year; the northern hemisphere in the fall/winter and southern hemisphere in late spring/ summer. While there is a market for very intense early harvest oils, the vast majority of people who do what you say end up coughing and asking for water. That's why I miss the Greek oils from 10+ yrs ago. They were always buttery and smooth, perfect for bread dipping. But since the market has obsessed about polyphenols, these Greek oils have been harvested earlier and earlier making them much less distinctive from their Italian and Spanish cousins. Sad. On the positive side, there has been a lot research showing the these peppery oils do better at 'high heat' cooking than previously thought.

      @@raskov75 I agree that fresh olive oil is an acquired taste. The early harvest of Greek olives has other reasons such as the labor shortage because people prefer to work in the tourism industry and there are a lot less immigrant workers than the past, so the ones who work the fields have to start collecting olives earlier in order to finish before all the olives fall on the ground. Another reason is the price a producer can sell olive oil is connected with it's acidity, not it's aroma or taste, and if the olive stays long on the tree it gains acidity so the price per litre falls considerably: for example, this year a litre of extra virgin olive oil can be sold around 3,20€ per litre while high acidity oil can be sold for as little as 0,50€

    My mother's family had an olive grove in Greece (near Sparta) and for decades we got a big can of olives, in the oil, every year fresh from Greece. I never realized how lucky we were.

      She was thrown off when she said "that's the olive oil" which is kind of untrue as olive oil needs to be extracted first, which removes the very bitter compounds that are in the olives. She said it's good but trust me, it's very bitter.

      This world is rapidly passing away and I hope that you repent and take time to change before all out disaster occurs! Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20.
      Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13 over the course of 1260+ years. Revelation 17 confirms that the beast is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God.
      Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!

    Koroneiki variety = best in the world. My family has also olive trees in Hleia region and I feel blessed to consume this olive oil. It s not only food, it is pure natural medicine!

    This olive oil from Greece is surprisingly mildly spicy. Its purity and flavours are just unparalleled if you compare against mass-produced olive oil of Puglia.

      Italy is the biggest buyer of Greek olive oil (and other Mediterranean countries) they mix it within italian oil and bottle it in Italy. If its 20% (or 30%) and bottled in Italy its regarded as Italian olive oil...

      @@RealOrbit-Australia that's so true... i remember an old video where some1 related to olive oil trading said that olive oil from Italy can be up to 40% imported from Greece...but of course since they can sell it in higher price bcs of better marketing they benefit from buying low from Greece,because Greeks lack on promoting their product.

      A friend's father told me a story of how, when he was a boy, his family was staying in a country house with an olive tree right outside his bedroom window. He tried eating the olives right off the tree and they made him sick. He's ninety-six now and he still can't stand the taste of olives. I did the math and this must have been in 1937 or '38 in those magical summers just before the start of World War 2.

    I have never seen olive oil so green. I am very fond of olive oil. I have been wanting to try some; early harvest, hand picked, cold pressed extra virgin olive oil for a long time. I tried some, very expensive olive oil from amazon and was very disappointed. So now I have ordered some from the website mentioned here. Messinia olive oil. I am very excited, I so hope it is awesome.

    I love the fact that you mentioned the dirt is washed off so that it doesn't give the oil an earthy taste, and not so that it's not contaminated. Two birds with one stone here for sure. ❤️

      I would bet willing to bet a large sum of money that in a double blind taste test, you couldn't tell the difference.
      The same is true with wine. Some of the highest ranked wines are super cheap from Napa Valley. Not from France.

A while ago a guy played a prank on people by giving them water and telling them it was the Swiss Alps ancient volcano spring and all that nonsense. He was actually taking a bottle and filling it up with a garden hose from the city municipal supply. But the people thought they were drinking something special and they were talking about how "pure" it was.
      One of my favorite foods is salmon. A while ago I bought a super expensive wild caught sockeye salmon and cooked it. It was so gross. It was super dry and had a really fishy taste and smell. Give me the cheap farm raised Atlantic salmon please.

    Claudia is such a good host/presenter. There is something very genuine about how she interacts with the makers especially when she tries the end product. No pretense, just curiosity and what comes across as truly being in the moment. I didn't realize I was tired of the overly enthusiastic pathologically upbeat male presenter until now. Thank you.

    Omg. I absolutely love a good grassy, peppery, slightly astringent olive oil. It makes your tongue dry slightly, like putting loose leaf black tea on your tongue. Or licking the skin of an almond. Such a distinct feeling.

    The idea of harvesting Olives from trees that are up to 1000 years old must give the orchard workers the most incredible sense of connection and perspective of time & place.
    To know that your ancestors were almost certainly here harvesting for Millenia, on some of the same trees even. That's incredible.

    We live just down the road from an Olive mill. Queen Creek Olive Mill. They sell oils and other artesian products along with breakfast and lunch. Lovely place.

    Now when you are talking Greek foods, I give 2 ❤❤ because I love the lemon soup, chicken souvlaki. The lamb shank looks delicious, but I can't seem to abandon a good chicken souvlaki for all that other great foods on a Greek restaurant menu. In Astoria, Queens, NY where many Greeks settled in NYC they have a nice culture.
    There are souvlaki's on a specific street cart and people line up around the corner for this guy. They'll block the bank around the corner. His souvlakis are unbelievable. Better than the restaurant around the corner. He dominates and he really doesn't move around. Everyone comes to him. He's old a probably rich by now. Very nice people the Greeks.
    That olive oil looks perfect.
    I should go to Greece to see the ancient structures.
    Grape Leaves! I forgot about grape leaves, they are such delectable appetizer. The Greeks like their onions, so make sure your partner eats the same level of onions or you won't get a kiss for a day of two. 🤣

    A friend of mine, when I was growing up in California had an olive grove. I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to eat an olive fresh off the tree.
    It a once-in-a-lifetime event because it is something you only do once in your life!
    There is a great video of an American woman vacationing in rural Italy. She is talking about how beautiful it is when she mentions eating fresh olives right off the tree. The video ends at this point for some reason.

      You have a very poor bottling industry and the "made in Italy" brand is widespread, of course they do. They don't buy Portuguese olive oil because we actually have a proper bottling industry.
