Raleigh Police Officer Shoots Armed Suspect During Domestic Assault Call

Raleigh, North Carolina - On February 10, 2024, around 10:30 p.m., Raleigh police officers responded to a call of shots fired in the vicinity of Vardaman Street and Hightower Street. After not finding a scene at that location, Officer M.L. Berg proceeded to the 800 block of Rock Quarry Road, where he heard multiple gunshots coming from the opposite end of the parking lot around 10:50 p.m.. While Officer Berg was conducting an investigative detention of an individual in a parking lot located in the 800 block of Rock Quarry Road, multiple shots were heard from the opposite end of the parking lot. Police said Officer Berg transmitted a notification of a “shots fired” over the police radio, drew his duty-issued firearm, and began to head towards where the shots were fired.
Within seconds of the shots being fired, Officer Berg saw a man wearing dark clothing, and what appeared to be a firearm in his hand, quickly emerge from between two parked vehicles. Officer Berg orders the man to drop the gun and place his hands on his head. A man, identified as Ranses Vacramontes Vargas, continued to walk away from Officer Berg. He eventually runs behind a red pickup. Berg then shoots several times, hitting the truck before backing away. Berg then notices movement inside the red pickup. Inside the truck was a bystander not involved with Vargas. Berg's gunshots hit and injured the bystander in the truck.
Backup arrives, and the driver’s side door to the red truck opens as Officer B.W. Keaton gets out of his police vehicle and draws his weapon. Both Berg and Keaton yell for the people in the truck to show their hands. They find Vargas lying on the ground beside the truck with gunshot wounds. A gun can be seen on the ground by Vargas’ right leg. According to the police, officers recovered the gun as well as an additional magazine and rounds of ammunition. Vargas was treated for those injuries on the scene and at the hospital. Officers also found two women who they say Vargas shot before officers arrived. Vargas has been charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

She was talking about the innocent bystander in the truck with her. Not the perp. Officer didn’t pick up on that because he hadn’t cleared the truck yet.
Officer Berg didn't see her probably cuz she was knobing him in the red truck, and didn't pop up until OK Corral opened up around them, and both ducted back down after seeing Vargas using them as cover or was trying to yank the door open on them. A nasty dirty move by Vargas who had already capped two other females, he didn't give a shit who got in the way, so he'll be charged for that in addition to shooting the two females.

You have the luxury of being a couch cop. When you've been in an armed altercation come back and tell us how straight you where thinking and seeing at the time.
@@henkondemand He even said something like "He's in the car" afterwards even though he didn't see that, lucky the other cop thought about it first and didn't just blast the car. Talk all you want but we've seen thousands of videos here and cops tend to try and not fire into civilians. He mag dumped into the car and wasn't aiming for the suspect (because he clearly couldn't see him behind the car) and more so started suppressing him, which resulted in someone else getting hit. That's why training is so important so you can abstain yourself from mag dumping into cars possibly with civilians. He wasn't even getting shot at either. We can comment and we will. When cops do well we say they do well in the comments, but when they screw up or do badly we do as well, cause it matters and training matters. Good thing the civilian didn't die though.

Because police train to be tactically aware, especially of their crossfire. They are held to higher expectations than criminals. You don't mag dump into an occupied vehicle that is between you and the suspect.

He fired more shots into the truck as he was strafing, than he did when he had clear line of sight of the suspect at the back of the truck bed. There’s an initial four shots at the suspect, brief pause as he loses line of sight, then he starts emptying into the truck. Im guessing he saw the silhouette of the innocent bystanders and thought it was the suspect. Which is no excuse, he shouldn’t be mag dumping into a civilian vehicle because the suspect was running away. The officer also took cover behind occupied vehicles in the parking lot, endangering more civilians. If someone wants to argue that it’s hard for police because it’s unknown, I say that doesn’t apply here because it’s their job to at least be able to determine basic things. If you’re trusted enough to carry a gun for public safety, but not held accountable when you do dumb stuff, this is what happens. Instead of using tax payer dollars to pay out constant lawsuits, it needs to start coming out of the police union and the negligent officers own accounts. Then we can spend tax dollars on proper training, where common sense stuff like not shooting into a civilian occupied vehicle is known.
And that is why Andy took away Barney's bullets.

A citizen is not obligated to act against an armed suspect, whereas officers are. He made a split second judgement that is gonna be Monday morning quarterbacked by everybody. So no, the officer is not gonna get locked up as there was no crime committed by him.

Officer with no good cover, no backup, armed suspect non-complaint, once the suspect gets behind cover & the officer has none it's pretty much over for that officer. Also, there's tons of people and the suspect could've killed them. It's an unfortunate chain of events, but let's not just blanket the details because it's more juicy of a storyline. Maybe the people in the vehicle were already ducked down when the initial shots went off, which would explain why the driver got hit with very low & the lady didn't get hit at all.

A lot of law firms won't touch this because it involves the police but one firm is now pursuing it. The cop car plowed into another car as well. They won't be suing the police but instead the city & the city will probably just throw money at it with an out of court settlement since what do they care, its not their money.

It was not a different intervention where the cops suspected that guy of a different crime, it was all part of the same incident.
