San Pablo Police Shoot Man After He Charges at an Officer With a Metal Pole

San Pablo, California - On Friday, September 8, 2023, at 1:39 p.m., San Pablo Police received a 9-1-1 call from a female reporting party in a residence in the 2600 block of Dover Avenue. The reporting party requested officers assist with a mental health evaluation for her husband, who was later identified as 44-year-old Andre Smith. The reporting party said Smith was showing signs of schizophrenia. The reporting party was concerned about how Smith would react to the police response. Upon arrival, Smith had locked him inside a room of the residence. Officers made attempts to communicate with Smith, but he refused. Officers learned Smith did not live at the residence with the family. The reporting party said Smith was not acting violent at that time and agreed to call the police if he exited and needed further assistance.
At 2:52 p.m., the reporting party called 9-1-1 asking for the police to return, as Smith had exited the room and was harassing her. The reporting party said Smith was outside of the house, and she did not want him to return. As the Dispatcher was on the phone, Smith was overheard in the background yelling comments that he would kill police officers and make them kill him. Officers learned family members and children were still inside the residence. Officers arrived on the scene and began communicating with the Smith in the front yard. Smith refused to listen to the officer’s orders and, at one point, concealed himself along the side yard of the residence. At one point, Smith began throwing brick pieces at the officers. The officers deployed less lethal measures with Tasers and bean bag rounds.
These proved ineffective as Smith grabbed a folding chair as a shield and raised a three-foot metal pole while charging at one of the officers in the front yard. Smith swung the pole at the officer, who ducked to avoid being hit. Another officer fired one round from his service weapon, striking the man in the upper right leg. Smith was subsequently detained, and officers immediately began providing medical aid. Smith was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. He survived his injuries, and has since been released from the hospital. The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office subsequently charged Smith with two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon upon a peace officer, with special weapons enhancements. This case is pending trial.

Selection bias. Videos where the suspect gets bean bagged and imediatelly surrenders aren't as likely to gain popularity or even get featured at all in channels like this.
Probably a bit of confirmation bias at work. We're less likely to see video if there was a peaceful resolution after bean bag vs if deadly force was used.

One of my close friends has "teh skitz" and he stayed with me rent-free in the mid 2010's for 2.5 years just cause he's fun to hang out with, and loves mountain biking. He never had to take a single medication while he was there, but had to get back on meds shortly after moving out. A couple years ago I asked him how he was able to go without meds for so long, and he said "cause I was having fun every day and didn't need them."

@@alexyancey-watters4318 Crisis teams travel in pairs. They also get referred by 911 via 988 diversions. Look up mobile crisis teams. California, New York and Washington state are creating them all over. If its a potential domestic violence they'll roll with a cop for protection, otherwise a lot of the time they'll show up and assess how bad it is first then make a call either way for detainment or a less restrictive alternative

I was raised in San Pablo, it's borderline a ghetto and it's almost always had violent crimes, rampant drug use, mental health issues and domestic abuse. I'm glad I moved out over a decade ago but this sort of thing is becoming tragically more common everywhere else in the Bay Area too.
Ironically East Pablo Alto is having a renaissance and has had no homicides all year. But San Pablo is right there next to Oakland & Richmond you can’t escape the crime. Sad really.
I think it's terribly amusing that you think violent crimes, drug use, mental health issues and domestic abuse don't happen EVERYWHERE.

Charged doesn’t mean convicted. The court may determine he should get mental health treatment rather than prison. Probably not though since mental hospital beds are very hard to come by.

@@Gnvdth Well it was a big part of my job as a female security officer. And it’s why the female officer was doing the talking in this video. Although like someone pointed out, the dude was mad at his woman so.. might not have been the best choice to handle this situation.

It's because you can watch every public breakdown on your phone. People have always been troubled, but it wasn't recorded almost every time and disseminated to the public. Crime is down but people are more afraid of it because they see videos of it several times a day.

I would like to add my 2 cents. Social workers don't even care anyway. My experience is that all they care about is their damn paycheck and that's it. They will not hear out about the key issues involved, nor will they accept evidence. If you're lucky, they'll have made up their minds and won't care to meet with you halfway.
