When I was in high school, they played nearly every backyard party that I went to!
They played at our high school during lunch (Oct. '75). : )
@@zzyzxx13 WOW!
What songs did they cover? Awesome Band!
@@jamesjames1716 It's hard to remember since I was usually pretty stoned, hehe! It seems like they mostly played their own stuff, with maybe a few covers thrown in like "You Really Got Me". They hadn't quite refined their sound yet, and I actually got tired of seeing them every weekend, hahahaha! That was '73-'74. They polished up their music when they started playing clubs. Of course, Eddie's guitar work was always mind-blowing! Michael Anthony is still married to an old high school friend of mine.
You've never been to a backyard party. I would have seen you.
SO STINKIN COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These kids are going to make it!
10 seconds into the song and Ed's tone has me shaking my head in disbelief. Still! Just blistering.
You can hear how important Michael Anthony's backing vocal is to the VH sound.
RIP Mr Halen, we remember 🎸🎸🎸🎸
Listen to that guitar TONE!!!!
The Pasadena Civic shows are soundboard and sound amazing for that era.
Without the echo/reverb of the studio recordings, kinda reminds me of the Angus Young tone from the first few AC/DC albums, especially Let There Be Rock. Still totally Edward though for sure. Awesome to hear.
Only 88K views??? Come on VH nation! What a national rock and roll treasure!
You can tell that's EVH, all right! :)
Did not know that they did _this_ Kinks song. Now I'm imagining them doing a medley of this and "Destroyer" (which is impossible for 1976 since that song came out in 1981).
I really like how Mike’s Bass Guitar comes through this recording. Classic balanced sound from the club days through Fair Warning that’s an early VH signature.
Michael Anthony is the GOAT
This is epic. Thank you so much for sharing. I love when Halen play Kinks. It just works so nicely. I can't wait to read the new book!
The Ultimate Party Band!!!
Awesome find. The solo is a foreshadow of the epic solo on 'you really got me ' on the first album
Greg, You Sir Unearth The Type of "Historical Treasure" That I Love and I Thank You! #VANTASTIK
love Roths voice, he's king
FRIGGIN AWESOME! Thanks for sharing this gem!
AWESOME BOOK Greg! Thanks for that and this!
Awesome!!
I’m looking for me in the crowd in all the pics.
Thanks dear Greg!!!!!Bellissimo!!!
VH really liked the Kinks!
Who doesn’t?
Ed was such a great “improviser”. He undressed any song and made her his own.
Not really. He worked out all these arrangements and solos well in advance.
Righton another gem! Thanks man
El mejor grupo de Hard Rock,,, Van Halen
Awesome, sounds great.
Great audio clip Greg!! - love these rare gems!

@Aerodude73
So cool. I could hear just one lick and it's so evident that it's Eddie. Even that early in his career. This reminds me of some of the bootleg Randy Rhoads recordings with Quit Riot in that he played licks that ended up on Ozzy albums. Several of Eddie's licks in that solo are absolute classic Eddie-ism's. Same for the Queen song. Kind of like traveling back in time and seeing Van Halen on Sunset Strip...
these images and the original sounds are freaking amazingd
I’m so glad they went with “You Really Got Me.” Not that this is bad, but “You Really Got Me” is much more suitable for radio.
That was Templeman’s call…a good one too.
Dave says if I have to do it I should do it all day and all of the night. I believe him. Dave wouldn't lie to me. Or you. Do it indeed! Solo sounded familiar.
Hey Greg,on this song I think they’re also doing that thing they used to do with the guys grabbing drumsticks and playing drums with Alex.
Its so strange that hearing a college/club recording on youtube after almost 50 years passed after it but Van Halen always sounds great💯💯💯
Awesome , another gem from early VH . Alex with some nice kick ass drumming in there too
This is a billion times better than the version which later appeared on their album.
Kinks song!
This 70’s VH stuff with Roth is way way better than all the stuff with Sammy many years later. LOVE every bit of it.
Sounds better then anything VH has produced in years! Thanks for posting!
THANKS FOR SHARING THIS VH GEM GREG!!!!!! EDDIE IS KING!
3:48 did they have the RWTD car horns on a button to play at will?
Must have been because I thought the same thing. That makes 2 of us.
2:33 very similar Chuck Berry/Kinks lick used at the start of the Panama guitar solo.
Never heard this one Greg very cool
Greg, the book is Van-tastic!
I'm just now watching this!! I swear I'm related to the guitar and drummer!!
Condolences, man. I heard about Edward.
Hey Gregg, I love ALL your VH pix you post on Twitter
Dave's not even out of the first verse and he's fucking up the lyrics !! Still love ya, Diamond....lol
Tune it in Resonance
Greg, Thanks from a Pasadena boy from the keg party days.
Torrance over here bro circa 1981 !
Michael Anthony and those back I got vocals / harmonies! 😎
Dave's banter in the early days reminds me of Paul Stanley a lot.
It's a lot like Peter Wolf from J Geils
How did it take so long to get this band signed?
7 years. After Pasadena show, Warner Record signed up the Van Helen.
@@r38658 Not according to Warner Bros.' Ted Templeman. "The Van Halen"? lolol
@@r38658 This show is in 76. They got signed in mid-77 after Ted Templeman saw them at the Starwood and immediately called Mo Ostin to see them, who then signed them on the spot. They played their last show at the Pasadena Civic Center in early Feb 78 just before starting their first tour to support the release of the first album.
Alex’s snare sound is already there.
Hey Greg, when's the movie coming out?
Un earthed? Was it buried in the ground?
This is sick sick playing ... sick I say.
😝💯💯💯
Did you record this Greg? Very cool and nice quality!!!
+the artist No, I was 7 in 1976!
+Greg Renoff It can happen! LOL I'm going to pick up your book, can't wait to read what you've been able to unearth!
+Greg Renoff .... ... I was ... sweet 16 !!!
+matttm Yeah I recognize that, I was a live-sound engineer back in the day and yes I do, I have some okay quality VH from I think their first trip to England, really great to hear the energy they put out back then, I saw them in the clubs about a dozen times before they got signed. I use to have a DAT of VH at Anaheim circa 1980-something that was really fun, but my DAT player stopped working. Do you collect? (my favorites are Pink Floyd, the Animals tour) Really like your icon photo btw!
+matttm Love the videos on your channel sub'd!
Typical Roth…forgetting the lyrics 😂 Love it!
Still weird that is song recorded on a van halen album
That was toxic masculinity and I miss it.
Fuckin A! 😂
Saw these guys 3 times at The Rock Corporation in Van Nuys in the mid '70s. Gotta say they were no better than the rest of the garage bands they had there.
Fortunately, history has proven you very, very wrong…😂
@@glengamble526 Did you see 'em there? I did and I stand by my opinion.
Kinks version is better
Van Halen isn't Heavy metal
Dave Whalen c'mon man, I'll wait and jump is the heaviest metal you will hear
On fire, romeo delight, tora tora, girl gone bad, early version house of pain...VH was heavy metal when they wanted to be, they were just too good to ONLY be a heavy metal band.
terrible cover
tommyau2006 No, terrible comment.
They did it their way. So what ! And then they went to bigger and better greatness. And the rest is history
Must be a Wham fan
Damn this sucks!
🧠n't?
@@blurredthirty-two6445 I feel safe at night knowing Eddie will never be able to butcher this song again :)
@@JoryKorvid poor baby ! 😅
You're a Wham kind of gal.
