RUclips videos receiving Emmy nominations? That's incredibly intriguing. On one hand, it lends legitimacy to RUclips, but on the other hand, it elevates the relevance of the Emmy Awards, acknowledging the significance of visual arts contributions from independent filmmakers.
Ok so I actually brainstormed how episodic content could possible work on RUclips as a theory and this is it. I think that instead of looking at TV shows for episodic content like limited series or sitcoms etc we should look at TV soaps. Every episode usually ends as a cliffhanger. However the next episode doesn’t usually resolve the cliffhanger at the very beginning and opens up normally. This is because there can be like 50 seasons with 100 episodes in each season of a TV soap. So new audiences have to be considered for every single episode as viewers are not gonna start back at season 1 which was made in the 1960s. On RUclips if we can create episodic content. Go on a cliffhanger but have it were each new video anyone can pick up the story instantly. Then you are landing on a goldmine of stories and content.
Alright Ive kept this tab open and delayed watching it for about a day but now that I've finally gotten around to it... Wow. The first minute alone, it's really good to see that you guys, not only take your own advice, but you show how to do it effectively. This is truly a engaging video (at least from what I've seen so far), good job!
ya got a good point lads the last 70 ish vids ive built are all created for tv viewing,i try to take people on the adventure with us it feels more real to watch the grandeur of the environment we explore on a big screen im kinda loving it just hope more people discover these films one day too
Well I clicked on this one pretty quickly! Awesome insights, fella's. Also, I see that reMarkable tablet. Such a sick device for planning and writing. Glad to know I'm not the only RUclipsr using one haha.
6:56 It's also good to point out that RUclips you can directly engage with the creator and the community via comments. Netflix and other Streaming platforms dont have that option.
I enjoyed this topic and it was very insightful. When I do live videos, I plan to use RUclips Live over Twitch or other platforms. I watched this video on my phone and did not get the feeling that I needed to watch it on my television. However, I primarily do watch RUclips on my TV.
32:36 I feel like episodic content can actually work on RUclips or at least I think people are hungry for it they're just not that interested in waiting for it. A good example of this working out can be seen in the animation side of RUclips like with Helluva Boss and Murder Drones. Both shows that carry a high viewership but struggle with uploading consistantly cause those teams are basically making 22 minute films every month. The reward is small for that level of effort but I think there's a home for it on the site.
I've been watching RUclips on TV since I found out about RUclips 😂. I had a pc hooked up to my TV back in the day. Had a wireless mouse and keyboard on my couch. I remember watching old avgn and top gear clips. Good times. Hulu was free back then, too.
Interesting at the end based on episodes. I recently did a 2 part video on whether I could cycle from London to Paris in 24 hours. I wanted to do it as 1 long video but was afraid of the length of video would put off new people. So I split it into 2. The first video was the peak. And obviously the second video has no where near as many views. But it’s all about learning 😊 Just a shame as a lot of effort went into the video!
The idea that mouse-over previews are now becoming our version of movie trailers is really interesting, because it forces you to evaluate your intros without sound. Will it be intriguing without dialogue and music?
The issue with TV viewership is that while it may increase watch time... no one checks descriptions, clicks links, etc. So it hurts affiliate links, sponsorships. Etc. Which... I'm not mad about personally but it's going to hurt revenue for RUclipsrs
Johnny jigs editor here, i watch a ton of content from sports fishing to niche gaming concepts.. often i find a mixture of both stand alone content like history on a specific topic or one off videos like mini docs which can be compiled into a single series, work just fine. As well as episodic content like progression videos etc. Iv found, from a viewer stand point, that they all work depending on the mood im in. So do i agree that episodic content can work on youtube absolutely... but in the same hand, i agree with Paddy saying its a "user behavior" issue, not the algorithm. I imagine this concept relates back to the previous interview/sit down with Paddy where you briefly discuss audience types. Who are you making content for? At the end of the day, if the audience is receptive to themed content such as a series, i imagine they would be just as receptive to a series that follows a more episodic structure such as a tv show, as opposed to the to single videos that touch on a specific topic. Do i think those videos are good, of course, evergreen content is a blessing and all creators starting out should find there search term videos for optimal searchability, but once youve discovered your audience or rather.. your audience has discovered you... if the idea is to build that trust and viewer to content creator relationship, then a series, such as "progression", would in theory build a stronger bond thus creating a stronger following. I suppose then, the question falls back to the "are we trying to go viral or are we trying to make a video that is ideal for our current audience". At the end of the day, even if the audience is not fully receptive to content, you can train your audience to digest this content by slowly introducing it into your flow, and building a personal relationship with your audience.... but to wrap this long winded comment up, id say, you miss 100% of the shots that you dont take, so for those looking or interested in making episodic content on youtube, give it a try.. you literally have nothing to lose. Love the video, thanks for providing a ton of good information!!
It's crazy that this is a conversation. I thought everybody watches RUclips on TV when they are at home. And I'm with that 12 yr old. I watch RUclips on the TV so I can still use my phone. I get home and queue up a bunch of videos from my watch later list and sit and enjoy. Even shorts I'll queue up.
18:44 love Hayden calling Paddy out on a BS "cheap trick"😂 I feel exactly the same way when I hear this sort of thing. Paddy is one of those gurus who says 50% fundamental important and correct advice, and 50% total BS that exemplifies everything that's wrong with YT today. I still think we have him to blame for the most unremarkable and copycatish era of MrBeast's channel that, I think, damaged the MrBeast brand in the long run
RE: the whole episodic discussion This highlights yet another problem of the "Mr Beast Model" of RUclips in that.. not EVERY video needs to (or should be) the "biggest impact" for every possible new viewer.
oh they talking about me ...yay i feel nice to know that you don't imagine things an there really is market for longer hi-quality videos that arent educational or documentary.
I have a theory that im working on about the next evolution step in content creation/consumption. I wont tell the secret but i can tell that the future will be NOT niche down channels. The best ranked creators will be the ones having videos about lots of "random" disconected from each other subjects BUT with a catch.
34:00 ish… Bro that’s too long for the payoff! We would’ve forgotten the cliff hanger by the time the next video comes out. We all follow so many creators in various niches as a viewer and it’s unrealistic to remember that one payoff in that one video… Maybe Jimmy can pull it off, not others.
We are using YT 50% of the time on a 65" TV... maybe is 80% at my bf user behaviour. I use it a lot on my phone in bed too 🤣🙈 And i would not say that there is a separation from tv to phone in case of video length. When i am in mood for a 5min vid then it does not depend on the device. Often times it depends on how stressed i am or what kind of information i want. When i wanna learn something i mostly want a short video. But when i am at "netflix mood" i even watch 90 minutes on my phone 🙈
I watch one unlawful traffic stop video before bed (makes my blood boil seeing cops body cam footage, but I got sucked in) and now youtube thinks I want to see violence to get to sleep.
I watch YT on TV 90% of the time. The other 10% is on my phone only to go to sleep. My phone is for work and communication personally and I don't want to interrupt either. And I am typing this on my phone as I watch on tv 😉
27:35 re: retention danger zone. i have noticed mrbeast do these map transitions in his more recent videos (both in his experiments videos & his $1vs videos) where he reminds the viewer there's still 5, 6, 7 payoffs still in the pipeline.
What about content like that of Sam Sulek? His videos are 30+ minutes with very little cuts and no real hook at the beginning just chill genuine conversations and knowledge. People love that style and seem to favor it over the fast paced “mr.beast” type of videos. They say it feels more authentic and not just made for the “crowd”. Seems like this genuine style would also fit TV better
I think episodic content could work well on youtube. Like what's the difference between series on Netflix on youtube, and youtube? On Netflix no one would ever start watching lets say Outer Banks from episode 5, ever, they will start from episode 1. But how will they know is that series great? They will know because someone will recommend them that series, or they will hear that it is so good from people that have already watched it and because it is way longer than movie, or youtube video, people that watched it are waaay more emotionaly interested and connected to that series, that they would be if its only a 1h movie. Like my younger sister was begging me to start watching Outer Banks for over 4 months, and after I finally started watching it, I also emotionally invested and I am recommending it to my friends. Like see what happened with Ryan Trahan, yes probably if he would upload only 1 video of those 30 days, it would have like 30mil + views, but would they talk about that video as much as series, would people recommend to other friends? Because of that series even though I havent watch hall series, I heard for him, and since then, subscribed to him. Imagine if MrBeast would make banger series. Everyone would talk about it, and recommend to their friends, and with that he would reach new people.
Im 38 and i have a podcast playing on the background while i play a game on my phone and one in my pc at the same time and when suddendly an idea or doubt comes to my mind i google it at the same time as listening to the podcast and playing the 2 games and if the google result is a video i play it at 2x speed OVER the podcast listening 2 videos while playing 2 games at the same time. This is NOT a kids thing. Is an ADHD thing IMO.
I tried episodic content and it didnt work well for gaining new viewers. You have a much better chance of growing if you release 1 long banger video than 10 short ones. Sure you can do little recaps in the beginning of each episode but the storyline structure becomes so complex if you want to satisfy existing viewers AND new viewers. Keep it simple: make one great story that has a satisfying ending and therefore make new viewers and exisiting ones happy.
I guess for the mainstream. I’ve probably watched as much on TV vs phone/laptop for the last 7 years. It’s already big. But a more traditional episodic series with seasons is something I haven’t found, who’s doing those?
Oh there's plenty of web series on RUclips. Especially from the days of youtube red. They definitely aren't as prominent as they used to be but they are still out there.
What he’s talking about at the end is exactly what Physical 100 does. Every episode ends at 95% done. Then the next episodes first 5% is the end of the last. It works but it’s annoying
To your point about The Avengers movie... I felt the same with Game of Thrones. I stopped watching the show immediately after The Red Wedding. They killed off half of the cast, and I was mad! I haven't watched it since!
Shame on me for not watching every single one of your guys videos. I’m about 55% of the way through and have to stop to go revise my recent scripted intros. The algorithm will learn this is a common practice when I watch the editing podcast and then I’ll return to finish the video
The Mr beast suggestion also doesnt work because we dont actually care about the participants of the challenges. It's not like a tv show where I love and care about the characters and want to know what happens next to them. With mr beast videos, I dont remember any participants 5 minutes after I've finished the video, and I really dont care about what happens to them as individuals. So 24h or 1 week later, there is no chance I remember about them being about to win or lose a challenge. Mr Beasts video are like fastfood. Enjoyable on the moment, but not something that stays in my heart/mind for a week.
Interesting. I almost always skip over intros and get annoyed by "previews" of what is to come. I've either searched for a topic, read the video title and taken in the thumbnail, so I have enough info to know that I at least want to start watching the content. So, I'll skip ahead 30-60 seconds (or more) to get into the video. If people are going on and on I'll skip ahead. I mostly watch RUclips on my TV so I'll most likely have the remote near by or in hand, so it's easy to skip forward. Maybe that's viewing things as a video editor?
We stopped watching the shock face videos, short form videos are a favorite with some........ Understandably we would stop watching cliffhanger videos.
Let's be real, you should not edit your RUclips videos for TV unless your entire channel is designed to be played on the TV. Also, that is probably a terrible idea because even though tv has grown it is still a super small percentage of how content is consumed on the platform. You don't want to niche down on how people consume your content. You want to niche down, typically, on what your content is about and get it out to as many platforms, edited for each one, as best you can.
I also don't think that RUclips will be great for series. Very simple. Netflix recommends shows starting with episode 1. RUclips doesn't. Means in the end, RUclips will ruin chorologicals and thus kill the clicks.
It's quite sad that people are addicted to stimulation that you need to change how you edit to get the "hook" on the viewer in the first 10 seconds. It's just utterly sad imo.
Thats why all these ASMR videos or calming videos work so good. Because of the 30sec intro. All those titty vids work so good as well... because of the intro you should care about. Come on guys, stop it. Every niche is different. Not everyone is or wants to be Mr. Beast.
I watched this on the tv so I could comment with my phone! Amazing Convo
Aside from this podcast, you have got some very interesting content 👀
Hayden and Jordan are now becoming Colin and Samir of the editing world
Wish they could do it as long as them...
they already are lol

I love listening to this podcast
It's LITERALLY a goldmine for video editing, youtube and storytelling in genuine
I think it’s good but sometimes limited to only specific types of video
Fantastic tips love the time to value customer metric idea!

I don’t think I’ve clicked on your podcast faster! 😍👌🏻 hyped to get through this one with Paddy!

i think you guys are right
Wow... found this interview very insightful. Thanks! I just ordered the book you mentioned too about storytelling.
Well I clicked on this one pretty quickly! Awesome insights, fella's. Also, I see that reMarkable tablet. Such a sick device for planning and writing. Glad to know I'm not the only RUclipsr using one haha.
my favorite guest on this channel
6:56 It's also good to point out that RUclips you can directly engage with the creator and the community via comments. Netflix and other Streaming platforms dont have that option.
This has to be one of the best episodes
"I QUIT MY JOB TO BE AN ARTIST" is a great "RUclips on TV" documentary from Creative Jargon. Very inspirational!
you're commenting about your own video lol
Jet Lag: The Game is so good at the cliffhanger ending... I CANNOT WAIT for the next episode every single week
And when I first found the channel i absolutely binged everything
I enjoyed this topic and it was very insightful. When I do live videos, I plan to use RUclips Live over Twitch or other platforms.
I watched this video on my phone and did not get the feeling that I needed to watch it on my television. However, I primarily do watch RUclips on my TV.
If a creator is doing episodic and I come in on episode 3. If it catches my attention im mos def going back and watching the rest.
paddy looks like and sounds like an actor. patiently waiting for his foray into that realm
I noticed all the points in this video are layered to the edit of this particular video. The video editor Is literally learning on the job.
32:36 I feel like episodic content can actually work on RUclips or at least I think people are hungry for it they're just not that interested in waiting for it.

We think so too!!
@@EditingPodcast Holy crap! thanks for replying, I'm glad you agree. Also big fan of both of you guy's work. I just love everything you make.
This is probably my favorite podcast now. Hahaha

Just a shame as a lot of effort went into the video!

Thank you paddy and team editing podcast :)

21:10 Lol, I also completely didn't get the first story. Needed to rewind and put subs on.
I zoned out so hard as well
Great video! Solid information! Thanks for making this!
edit like Walter Murch and you'll be ready for IMAX

My friends’ kid does that all the time: he puts long RUclips video on a tv so that he can watch shorts on his phone or tablet at the same time
Very interesting information guys 👊🏻💥👊🏻
RE: the whole episodic discussion
This highlights yet another problem of the "Mr Beast Model" of RUclips in that.. not EVERY video needs to (or should be) the "biggest impact" for every possible new viewer.
Wow Cool Patience Endurance Pays 🏆
The same as that Avengers example is the end of the LOTR, the story is wrapped up, but I'll still be watching and crying for the next 30mins.
But holy shit Hayden, just watch the Godfather god-damn it!
55% of my views come from TV and now I'm looking at making content that can be better watched on TV
Tried to reach out thru email a few times… when will you be dropping the course again Hayden?
I enjoyed the section you spoke abou tthe Cliffhangers, Hayden you both should check out Jet Lag, it uses that perfectly
oh they talking about me ...yay i feel nice to know that you don't imagine things an there really is market for longer hi-quality videos that arent educational or documentary.
I have a theory that im working on about the next evolution step in content creation/consumption. I wont tell the secret but i can tell that the future will be NOT niche down channels. The best ranked creators will be the ones having videos about lots of "random" disconected from each other subjects BUT with a catch.
For the subtitles in the intro, is there any way you could make the white text grey before you make it black? Really not too pleasing for the eye imo
How does Hayden get an RUclips page overlay w/ title for his vids?
This is good news for me!
50% of my viewers are from TV. I make gaming videos. I was shocked, didn’t expect that at all when I saw it.
34:00 ish… Bro that’s too long for the payoff! We would’ve forgotten the cliff hanger by the time the next video comes out.

yeaah i was hoping for it to come out too but rip
Kara and Nate do good at making their videos more TV friendly

Yes he is youtube made for TV (for me at least)
I agree at 19:00 - When people sound too youbery at the beginning. "it will shock you etc..." - thats a red flag for me and I click off the video
Agreed
Most shocking moment of this podcast was finding out there’s someone who actually enjoyed Ahsoka 😂

I mostly watch RUclips on my TV so I'll most likely have the remote near by or in hand, so it's easy to skip forward. Maybe that's viewing things as a video editor?
What's with the first 1.52 minutes intro? Just start the video !!!!!
I Will Upgrade , Yes That Was Me i Didn't Know, I saw On Tv Whoooo what wuz that thats Me a Hot MessvLol to Message Better PUMP IT UP 🚀🌱🎵
Why are so many things repeated?
We stopped watching the shock face videos, short form videos are a favorite with some........ Understandably we would stop watching cliffhanger videos.
Let's be real, you should not edit your RUclips videos for TV unless your entire channel is designed to be played on the TV. Also, that is probably a terrible idea because even though tv has grown it is still a super small percentage of how content is consumed on the platform. You don't want to niche down on how people consume your content. You want to niche down, typically, on what your content is about and get it out to as many platforms, edited for each one, as best you can.
I do not want RUclips videos to start having CliffHangers! Who else agrees with me?
All in the edit & story telling. It's better then shorts. Shorts are turning pls brains to mush.
Hello sir, I am from India, will you be my friend?
Hayden attended film school yet has never seen The Godfather. Bro, go ask for a refund!

Beast.
