I've been thinking about this for a while ever since Jimmy first said "All I wanna do is make the best videos possible." Does creating fast paced, emotionless videos with no real "why" or intention qualify as the one of the best videos? Take his most recent video where he crashed a train into a pit. What was the point other than trying to create a video that looked cool? I believe that if he focused more heavily on the story or motive behind what he is creating, he would only then create a 10/10 masterpiece video.
Art, Spectacle, Story, Change - there are so many different ways and reasons to be part of this whole “RUclips” ecosystem. What makes me happy is that the ability to share your voice has been provided to almost anyone. I see Mr. Beast in the same way I see the billion-dollar block-buster niche in the traditional film industry. Those are enjoyable, but my absolute favourite content tends to be some pretty small channels that have a passion for their specific, narrow niche - call it the “Indy” part of RUclips. What’s really nice is that we can have it all 😊

"AI is enhancing mediocrity" - great quote. I think the competition on RUclips is also enhancing the need to grow out of mediocrity as a creator. long gone are the days where filler videos were rewarded.
Thought about interviewing sceen/script writers? I feel like they are telling stories and setting out the stories which is what creators might be thinking about before/during the editing process.
You should definitely learn about storyboarding and animatics (what Pixar does) It's actually the only reasonable way to work on animation since even a single second of animation could take hours we develop a workflow that builds and refine the story incrementally (script>storyboard>VoiceActing>Animatic) and it's only when we have a good cut of the storyboard with sound and dialog (what we called an Animatic) that we start animating each scene carefully. This workflow is used in movies too, more on the ones that need everything planned (Superhero, action movies) I think it's something like the oposite to recording footage and then build the story on the editing.
22:53 beautifully worded "new creative renaissance" many factors such as free accessible tools, etc I can see a hopeful beautiful future for online creators in near future
I was having a conversation with a friend a while back about this topic and we came to the conclusion that this next era of RUclips will likely not be shaped by one creator. It not likely anyone passes Jimmy in viewership or subscribers for the foreseeable future. Instead it is more likely that the next meta of RUclips will be shaped by many different creators who will take retention and view risks by creating great stories just because they love doing it. It’s going to be beautiful.
I love seeing more storytelling in video game content, it’s just here’s the best action packed clips or funny moments. It actually has characters and a story, where they wanna go or what they want to do. Not everyone has got story telling down yet but it’s become more of a popular thing to use.
I love that you mention this. I edit gaming videos for lots of clients, and one of the things I specialize in is identifying an emotional through-line to build a story off of. So many gaming videos are inaccessible because it's just a bunch of random action packed clips, like you said, to the point it becomes confusing to watch. It's also a skill to identify which game mechanics don't adapt well to a non-interactive video.
This is my favorite episode of the podcast yet. I love storytelling discussions. I imagine these conversations were happening in circle of the movie industry 100 years ago before filmmaking techniques were established and here we are experiencing it again but with RUclips.
It's great to hear you explaining things like "chair content" why it actually worked. This episode helped me a lot with my content/subs connection struggle.
Funny that I was just talking about Dan Harmons Story Circle with one of my friends this morning while working on my book. It a timeless approach and I will love to see it in more RUclips videos. That's when RUclips really becomes more than just a place to watch “how to” videos.
I really like Mr beast during his interviews and podcast, he is really motivating but the Mr beast on youtube is so soulless and dumb IMO. I forced myself to watch some of his videos and analyze his thumbnails, I don't think people over 20 are enjoying his videos. It's probably for people below 12 or even less and I hope it's not the future of RUclips.
Yeah, but his target groups is very very profitable. Children are re-watching the same videos multiple times. My daughter keeps watching the same videos all the time. No wonder they have so many views.
People over here 20 not enjoying his video? Every people have different taste. Every content have their own market, if you don’t like mrbeast content, that is fine, but don’t generalize that people over 20 follow your taste. 🤣
@@edasiminek Yeah that's exactly how I imagine it, so much dopamine for kids, it's like watching cartoons. But for adults it's extremely boring content.
29:45 the comparison between MrBeast’s old style videos and Ryan Trahan is so apt! I think of Mr Beast videos like a catchy pop song. Its got a great hook, great melody, keeps you dancing the whole way through. But you dont really pay attention to the lyrics…
It's an interesting reality about influence and content quality. It was mentioned how many RUclips personalities are making content that hits the storytelling target in the bullseye but they aren't as popular as other creators. On the other hand, an already "famous" person can delve into making YT content and have more subs and comments than established channels with better quality. I love how Jimmy is coming around to the storytelling aspect to shift the focus of what makes content worth watching. For new channels getting into the space it takes time and it's a grind to get a subscriber base, and hats off to those who do the work to get there.
Where is your part 2 this - you pixeled out half of the headlines at 0:41 so would have expected that the other topics would come in a follow-up video? But I couldnt find it?

I argue that they are, they just dont know it, and treating them like they are, they will enjoy it, even if they dont get all the details. And those videos are usually the most successful. Just stay away from the comment section afterwards. 🤭
that part of mrbeast brining in the daughter i think he got from big brother. the show has a challenge where every member of the big brother house has to stay still and not talk, and a loved one comes in. in the show the contestants have been staying at the house isolated from the world, for example iv seen a dog come in and owner of the dog started balling her eyes out, because she couldn't, move and touch her dog. the point of the challenge is for you to quit and hug/ talk to your loved one.
I actually heard about the trend going from mrbeast-y content towards more storytelling contents months months ago (maybe even a year ago)from surprisingly, anime RUclipsrs, specifically Blue banana podcast. It's cool that they predicted it too
30:58 Agreed, RUclips is the best distribution platform and average people telling a simple story about their life is the best content. Story and character rule on RUclips because they've been ruling the world since the beginning of recorded history. About 5000 years ago.
Ive been struggling for a long time to learn story telling it really is tough to learn. The difficulty is probably why so many people dont push that hard.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the interview, the first time I watched the interview by Colin and Samir I thought for the first time too, that jimmy actually doesn't know all of it. He is still learning and I could feel that. Meanwhile other times it wouldn't shine throught.
Creative Renaissance, I genuinely hope we see this happen over these next few years. I know i’m finally hitting Play on my own content and I hope more people decide to do the same

Also to the person who is reading this especially those with RUclips channel. Let's not give up on our RUclips channels. It's going to get better 🥳
Making great videos is a waste if nobody clicks on them. Storytelling and packaging go hand in hand so make sure not to overlook a good title and thumbnail. After looking into your channel I can definitely tell you that your videos will get a lot more views if you worked on those titles and thumbnails. Watch a few videos on how to get better at that. I'd recommend Paddy Galloway, was on a podcast where they dived quite deeply into that. Good luck with your RUclips journey and stick to it!

version 1, version 2, some might use WIP1, WIP2(work in progress) as your revised edit to sent to client. And easier for your reference when editing, if let say you have sent the client V2 video, and they were asking to make a changes referring back to V1, so I think better to duplicate each project you have export and sent to client before you start to make a changes on your next edit
Fantastic insights, this is the first podcast I’ve caught but I subscribed right away after finishing this video. I’m a creator on another channel, and I’m very encouraged by the idea that storytelling could be making a resurgence on the platform, as great stories are what drew me to be a creator in the first place. I will certainly continue to develop my own storytelling ability further on the back of hearing all of your thoughtful analysis and commentary, well done! I look forward to hearing more.
I think it would have been even better if they had a story for 52 so people could feel for both sides and choose who they want to win. Although it’s hard to do since the last two are kind of random
Great Episode 🙏🏼 What I dislike most about mr beast type of content, is that they are so heavily depended on the topic of money. This type of sensationalism just doesn’t sit well. Also money already has a way to important role in this world, that just funnels into it.
For me the beast philanthropy channel is the best and I’ll go as far as flagging specifically why….Dan Mace. He is a genius when it comes to storytelling and in time jimmy will shift more towards the way of Mace rather than beastification.
What makes MrBeast famous is not about strategy. It's about his name, his brand. He built it from the ground up. Everyone knows how Ford, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Chanel operate, but only a few can replicate them. It's not the strategy, it's their brand.
I have been thinking this way for a long time, that we are all wired for stories and connection, and that's the real power of RUclips. But you guys are explaining it so well it's like I found the fountain of youth or something, and I am trying to consume all of your content at once, LOL. I'm curious if anyone has thoughts on this: I know that story is not always literal, and I think almost any genre can use story to make more compelling content. But how do you think creators should go about it if their niche is not overtly narrative? I'm thinking about educational content, mental health stuff, for example. I know story would make this type of content 100x more engaging, but I'm wondering how to best approach it. Anyone seen some good examples/inspiration?
Ive been preparing for this moment. I have videos with millions of views but they were not fulfilling to my creative soul and instead were attempts to game the aglorithm. To show myself that i could create viral videos. Ive hated the beastification of YT and the hate filled content that goes viral on this platform. Really hope this wave is actually us turning the ship around as a viewerbase and sharing our own stories.
Oh my! Hayden, last week I posted a bunch of questions on your personal channel, and this week you are answering each one in this podcast. Thank you for that!
I watched 2 minutes of Mr. Beast’s most recent video Train vs. Pit and had to shut it off because so much was happening but at the same time nothing was. I was bombarded by fancy cuts and transitions but I just didn’t care about anything. Retention editing at its worst imo.
Top podcast! I’m a year into my journey as a content creator and want to add story’s to my content. I think I’ve got a decent bit of it but I want to become more of a priority
you really clickbaited me with Mr beast in the thumbnail but he iam happy I know you always make it worth the time and I know for sure jimmy will be here in the future
Absolutely, when you played that clip of the daughter again, i cried and remembered that I cried when I saw the video itself. Its insane that just in the seconds you played the highlights of the story I was brought to tears again, i dont even know why, it just works on my monkey brain
This is unbelievably engaging. Exactly the topic I was looking for. Your intro was genius. Tease a few items, show the promise, then cut it off so I keep watching, piggybacking on Mr Beast's authority. Love it. I was hanging on for that first principle, top of intelligence. Just genius...
so true about "vibes." videos with less popularity which have the creator's personality and vision directly impressed into them are a million times more worthwhile than videos with a million views. I haven't watched mrbeast more than a handful of times since he first began to explode in popularity. his current content feel like advertisements which are clearly meant to appeal to the lowest common denominators among people. it's so gross to me. the fact that he has to wonder why someone wouldn't want 100MM views is indicative of the type of videos he's creating and the motivation behind why they're being made. regardless, i respect mrbeast a ton and was a big fan of his back in 2015, and keep up on his podcast appearances because they contain much more personality (something missing from his channel uploads) and contain a lot of useful info.
Our bellies are full of sweets and easy meals and yet we wonder why we feel malnourished. I think WALL-E nailed our current situation. I hope the need for meaningful stories isn’t just a wave. I hope it is a lasting movement.
“If you can master character you can make content out of a garden chair” that couldn’t resonate with me more. Put that on a freaking tshirt

I think it would have been even better if they had a story for 52 so people could feel for both sides and choose who they want to win. Although it’s hard to do since the last two are kind of random
Loved this. Great video!!!!
Wow - first vídeo That i Saw from you guys and it was Amazing - going to Share it with my scriptwriters 🔥
finally somebody said mr b videos give you nothing
This was amazing. So helpful.
I like the idea of editing podcast. It keeps the essence but it's shorter and straight to the point
This was very enlightening thank you!
Thanks for the value, appreciate the value, from México legends
Do you have any examples that you can share or talk about with great story telling in educational content?
Ive been preparing for this moment. I have videos with millions of views but they were not fulfilling to my creative soul and instead were attempts to game the aglorithm. To show myself that i could create viral videos. Ive hated the beastification of YT and the hate filled content that goes viral on this platform. Really hope this wave is actually us turning the ship around as a viewerbase and sharing our own stories.
Can someone recommend resources that educates on how to become a solid storyteller ?
Oh my! Hayden, last week I posted a bunch of questions on your personal channel, and this week you are answering each one in this podcast. Thank you for that!
I love this channel! Greetings from México
What a wonderful thumbnail you have there ❤
Your insights are priceless ! (As always)
When creativity meets story telling ability you get FANTASY 🎉
Just genius...
keep it coming pls
Phenomenal perspective, I took alot from this
33 mins well spent 🙌🏻
Guys why is the ad so much softer than the podcast
Surprised at how much of this is second hand content from the Colin and Samir podcast
so true about "vibes." videos with less popularity which have the creator's personality and vision directly impressed into them are a million times more worthwhile than videos with a million views.
Fingers crossed!
30:30 technoblade is a great creator who can make you watch his videos 13 times :D because of the great storytelling
Watching your videos is like going to film school. Thank you!
This piece of content is a piece of amazingly useful information, thank you guys
Our bellies are full of sweets and easy meals and yet we wonder why we feel malnourished.
I think WALL-E nailed our current situation.
I hope the need for meaningful stories isn’t just a wave. I hope it is a lasting movement.
Cool this is very much
oh boy here jimmy goes again :)
How can engaging storytelling be utilized in talking head videos?
Surprised Hayden not drinking PRIME
Since he helped Logan so much🤯🤯
so much value!
