If a video really was that good, it would also have high watch time, engagement, satisfaction survey ratings, and return viewers. RUclips is not going to ignore all those signals and kill the video just because it ended a session. It's more likely that the algorithm can identify that this signal correlates with high satisfaction.
@@Levi_Allen Low views with high CTR and AVD is typically because the video was only recommended to your most loyal viewers which are more likely to click and watch
The distraction test is hilarious. I used to have a friend watch my video while over my shoulder and anytime I got the urge to say "hold on, the next part is good" or "It gets better" I knew that I needed to cut it
Great tip, ive done that a few times, mindlessly waiting for the viewers to be exited for the good bit, but they just lost engagement before hand, cuttt
22:00 (that part where u lost a little retention, may also create a better relationship with the people who stuck around, leading to better retention for a long time on future content on youtube)
Personally I feel like the flow of my videos disappear if I edit my clips too short. From what I have learned about subtitles, the audience needs more seconds than you do (as the creator) to take in everything they read. So you might read a subtitle in 1-2 seconds, but your viewer reading it for the first time needs maybe 4-5 seconds. I believe the same goes for videos. You can keep the clips on the shorter side as long as they are long enough for the new viewer to get all the information they need from the one clip.
That discussion at the end of whether or not too _much_ quality is a bad thing and session times was so intriguing! Session times and average video watched per viewer are always pretty much neglected statistics when it comes to talking about youtube so it was amazing to hear your guys' thoughts on it in correlation with the quality vs quantity spectrum Also I peep the vidsummit wristbands👀 Hope you guys had a wonderful time!
I think it can be combatted (and maybe why we see a big rise) with bingable content that you can watch two or three before clicking off, thereby telling YT that those videos WERE good, just you have something to do, you know?
Just discovered your podcast through this episode as we're big fans of Paddy! Absolutely loved it - now subscribed and will be catching up with the rest! THANK YOU!
I am still just so blown away that this exists. So thankful for this podcast. Such VALUE! Thanks for another great session, fellas. Awesome info. Cheers.
How can a short-form creator start creating successful long-form videos? I struggle so much with this thing about not trusting the audience and I try to create a super fast-pacing on the videos, it kind of works for short-form but for long-form, since I don't have a team or lots of cameras, I run out of footage super quickly when creating a fast-pacing long-form video.
I love this podcast! Every time I tune in Im inspired to keep pushing my content further and find new ways to improve. Thank you guys for taking the time to make these episodes!
Love how there are great points and counter points for clicking off YT, and how everyone is open minded to amend their views on how things work and what affects the algorithm. Excellent discussion! Thank you for sharing!
Just discovered this channel - such an interesting conversation! Love it! I feel like many other videos on RUclips on this or similar topics are extremely short, and pretty much all about the same things, same advice. I felt you really went deep and also gave so many new ideas and insights. My session ends here though hahaha, but it's also probably where my next session will start.
I love your videos so much! I'm a month behind on watching them because I always want to make sure I can actually WATCH them and not just listen. And maybe be able to take notes. I need to just start scheduling 'The Editing Podcast watching time' into my Tuesdays. 😁
hey im trying to learn video editing on capcut. What are some advice you could give me from your experience. im interested in learning every type of editing.
Great episode! To address the last conversation about session time, I’d say from my experience I leave platforms like RUclips or Tik Tok when I’m dissatisfied. Especially Tik Tok when you feel like you are wasting your time. I’d side with Paddy here that human nature is to keep watching more when they are enjoying something. But it does bring up a good point of crafting videos that leave your audience wanting more. David Dobrik did a great job of this with his 4:20 format
I watched this video twice in a row and plan on watching it again so I can improve my editing skills. Your video is making editing look so interesting to learn! I'm deeply passionate about sharing my spiritual insights from the universe, and this passion motivates me to learn even about the aspects I'm not particularly interested in, such as editing. What a great piece of content! Thank you so much for sharing.
Good video. There are so many factors that go into a videos success. I’m definitely going to start being more surgical with my intros and storytelling. Thank you all for this video.
Amazing interview! Loved it so much that I will be watching “Baby Shark (10 HOURS)” for the rest of the day to maximize post-viewing session time for the algorithm. 😂
The topic of a good video ending a session is fascinating. One of my favorite videos Hayden has done is the Finding Nemo one (which I've watched at least five times in it's entirety), and I've always found it interesting how it underperformed. That video changed my view on RUclips entirely, and I always do end "the session" with it because it's a video that resonates with me so well that it serves me in working on my own content. I think from a purely analytical perspective, both RUclips killing and promoting the video make sense. My two cents on that theory is that educational content that resonates with a viewer would be more likely to end a session than an entertainment one. From a viewer's perspective, I wouldn't be able to consume so much educational content, so if something is really striking, then that would end my session. For entertainment, no matter how fulfilling it is, I can always watch more because it's less demanding mentally. Anyway, great video you guys!
Paddy is the awesome … Hes videos have helped us creators more than he will ever know … and im glad that we have now reached the point where we talking about how videos are becoming too fast and loosing soul ! Love this Podcast 😍
Great video...I'd like to say that if I watch an entire video of a creator RUclips is now bombarding my homepage with that creator's content to see if I'm really interested in watching them again.
Great seeing paddy here. Paddy your work is Jhus great and awesome the tips you share about growth are really helping on my channel am glad that you were hosted. I hope to learn more from you.
As someone that creates faceless videos, the pacing is really important, because really its the only thing that keeps a viewer watching, but I literally dont have a friend who can watch my content for me to see how they react to the pacing. I love the idea of getting a cow field, a cat and a book Ive been putting off to distract me, Im going to give it a try for sure
this was so interesting and informative. i’ve been stuck on a video i’ve been editing for a while now and this was exactly what i needed to move forward. thanks!
"Creators try to tell story & they tell it badly, retention goes down, What does it teach them, to don't do it again. So the rule should be keep tryna tell the story until the graph goes up, it's not about cutting out the story it's about telling it better" - Hayden Hiller Smith 2022
I found this very informative regarding the most basic aspect of editing. Keeping the viewers interest. If retention drops then that's the point interest is waning a little. (You expect to drop a little but if the curve is down trending before the end of the video it's too high). I'm just thinking of how to apply this to Live streaming as well. - The content still needs to be planned to be interesting, whether it be stories or clippings of articles or just chit chat with the chat
guys why did you cut the interview? I would love to see this conversation in full. I admire all you 3. Thanks for this great podcast. I know it's an editing podcast so Pun unintended. Give us the full cut :D one of my fav videos online is Hayden talking with Eric and Mac. (full version)
This was a great conversation! I love listening to fellow filmmaking nerds talk about editing. I have a question for you all, do you think there is a place on RUclips for cinematic miniseries/web series? Can there be real filmmaking on RUclips while we fight the audience retention and CTR?
18:44 that's so true. so many creators these days are creating such patronizing, fast paced videos like mrbeast, without understanding the actual reason/science behind it.
This is main issue with my editing - wrong flow and too fast editing. It's hard for me to add "air to breath", pauses and do it naturally and to not destroy the rhythm
Guys You are such an inspiration. Great to see such love for the craft itself from You. If I’ll pull this of (i.e. my RUclips career) You need to be ready with Your Polish 😎😁
When I watched really good video it's not like "ok I have enough", it's more like "who is this guy/channel?" I remember this feeling after first Ryan Traham video. Maybe I left, but I returned. And when you leave a like and subscribe, RUclips works with that information.
I'm only the 102 LIKE today. It is a treat to be one of the early subscribers to a channel that offers so much. (They do need to however work on the lobby. The candy dish is not filled again......)
As i film student what our prof. always told us was the editing and cinemat should be hidden on the first watch, if a viewer is noticing cuts and editing style, he/she is not at all immerged in the story. Pacing is the most important thing, good pacing will always carry which highly depends on the sound designing. When i switched to youtube editing for some clients they would want very fast adhd friendly cuts that would bother me . And still it does to the point i stopped editing for youtube :((
everything from direction to story boarding to editing is to immerge the viewer into the story, getting to aggressive over one thing usualy ruins the project
I’m enjoying this video! I have a suggestion. Your closeup on your guest has such a shallow dof that his mic is out of focus, and I actually found that really distracting, it almost looks like you were censoring his mic. I can see he’s close to the background but still a little bit deeper field might be better! This is really funny to me because I definitely prefer widest possible aputure 😂 this is literally one of the only things I’ve ever had throw me and I’ve been filming for a decade!
The theory with youtube killing a brilliant video because it ends sessions is really interesting
I’ve felt that before. 8% ctr, 7:50 view duration, and then incredibly low suggested recommends. A real bummer when that happens
@@Levi_Allen I must say that I have felt that too with my new channel but everytime I try to at least learn something from every failure
