Wooo! Happy to see team MK on here! I worked with them for a while and I will say that out of all the RUclipsrs I edited for in my years, they were the most organized. They didn't just dump footage on an editor and say good luck. They knew the footage as well as you did and gave actual direction. They don't just leave it up to the editor to be the story producer on their own like most creators do. I think that's another reason why their content is so strong, because it's a lot more intentional than most. It has a reason to exist before the camera even starts rolling and the audience can see that too when the episodes drop :)

The thing that struck a chord with me was when they were talking about the marathon video. They kept referring to that video as an “episode”, and the fact that their mindset is that each video is just an episode of a much larger story taking over the entire “season”. It’s something not many RUclipsrs touch on, but it’s definitely what makes their videos so captivating.

i was really glad to hear how they recognized and responded to the comments criticizing the hyper edited mini episodes. I was one of the subscribers to comment and say please go back to storytelling. One thing to note here, good editors should hear critiques and sit at a table with editors better than them to learn, but youtube remains a different space still from traditional tv, because youtube also caters to and is deeply connected to the audience. youtube editors are learning their craft, but also learning how to build the channel and trust. Id say a great editor does all those things youve listed… a great editor in youtube also reads the comments. So many youtube teams that just don’t read the comments, or atleast dont see the need to adapt to their audience. however it IS what builds that trust and allows me to say I am going to watch this 30 minute video. Anyways, great videos team and thanks for being responsive in your style and editing.

Nice vid. Thank you for focusing on storytelling. These guests were great explainers.
When Ed (Film Booth) interviewed YT influencer Leon Hendrix regarding infotainment channels, Leon said to focus 80% of the vid on WHY [the thing that the vid is about] is important. Leon said just focus 10% on "How to" do the thing that the vid is about.
Please, pretty please, talk about this. I can't find ANY other creators talking about this on YT, and I'm a major YT content consumer.
There is a major content cap on this/Leon's approach. And given that infotainment channels comprise a massive amount of YT channels, this can benefit so many of us infotainment creators.
    Thanks!

It's good to hear that retention editing isn't really needed. As someone with a small channel, who also works full time, I have been trying to find ways and techniques for creating content that is both informative and effective. Seeing more creators have success with more story based content is inspiring. I prefer less flashy and fast paced videos myself. So it's encouraging to see that I can draw viewers to my content with slower, story based content. Great interview filled with inspiring ideas and suggestions. Thanks! Subscribed.

Retention marketing is an approach to marketing that focuses not on gaining new customers for your brand, but on how you can market more effectively to your existing audience in order to drive high retention, deeper engagement, more consistent monetization, and better overall results for your business. Retention editing takes the theories/rules/strategies of customer retention and applies them in the editing and content creation process.

There is a reason why I myself don't do "retention" editing on my videos. And that's because a.) I also came from a traditional background (film school grad); and b) I myself have a terrible retention span IRL and editing for long periods of time takes way too long, so I just focus on making the video make sense rather than force comedy (I'm also terrible with humor anyway).

Awesome video. I am fascinated that you did not title go for an SEO title such as: Michelle Khare Hates Retention editing...was there a reason for that?

Ngl when they were talking about potential moments and preparing the shots in case they happen, it feels a bit Black Mirror-y to me

Is anyone familiar with the musical instrument library they referenced to add a punch to edits. Back when Hayden did his breakdown of Logan's Pokemon Card video, he referenced it as well. Is it a library you'll need to build yourself or build it from a music creation program. I primarily use Envato Elements for editing assets.
