So great to see your process. Sometimes self doubt creeps in for me and then I see that top editors like you are doing the same things really makes me feel more confident. Thanks!!
Absolutely LOVED this interview!! I’m glad to have discovered your work through this @ybchangofficial 😍 Super creative and strategic… the perfect left & right brain 🧠 mix!! 🤓👏🏼 xx Tania
Great to see YB featured! When I worked on the Try Guys videos at BuzzFeed they were pretty big on making sure that the talking head shots were always pushing the action/narrative forward instead of commenting on the past (aka post thoughts). They wanted to keep you in the moment and not narrate so heavily that it feels like a fleeting moment to the viewer. So it makes sense that they got rid of the post thoughts entirely. Although their shows still follow the traditional outline and tropes we used at buzzfeed (cold open, hard cutting music on funny moments, relying on showing opposite things on screen for comedy "hey don't do this thing" then showing them do that thing haha) the Try Guys do have backgrounds in filmmaking/ acting respectively. So specifically Eugene and Zach used to leave heavy notes on how to make small changes to a video to make it feel more like a tv show and veer away from the usual BuzzFeed content as much as possible. They used to also take the edit and experiment with tweaks themselves to see what was and wasn't working. So that is a big reason why their edits now feel more TV-ready because they've intentionally put a lot of work over the years into getting it to feel that way. And it's now the norm. They genuinely care about that. It's been great to watch their videos and see how they've evolved the style over the years to take on a life of its own but still being grounded in the frantic BF style that they started with.
I am BEYOND STOKED you interviewed YB :D ever since her first editing breakdown of a without a recipe, she's been a major inspiration to me as an editor. Her determination and organization is relentless :)
LOVED this video. I haven’t watched a single Try Guys video but I gained soooo much insight from this interview! Some fave moments: 1. Talking about pre and post thoughts 2. YB’s organization and workflow (so crazy and admirable!) and how the organization helps with handing over the project to another editor 3. YB going over the editing, feedback, and reviewing process for a Try Guys video 4. The tips on music - only use for 30 seconds max and the hard cut during a joke Also thank you for the extra visuals in this episode! Helped visualize the lessons and concepts
I work as the only video editor at a multimedia production company, also i'm working on my RUclips channel about video editing on the side and I can't thank you guys enough for this project. This channel really feels its made by editors for editors. Excellent guests, questions and stories make this one, hands down, one of my favorite RUclips channels of all time. Thank you so much, and keep the content going!!!
This was amazing. My timelines always look like a tornado dumpster fire. Hearing about how she is so meticulously careful about keeping everything organized is awe-inspiring. Thank you so much!
YB has such an interesting take on this! I don't particularly care about editing and still listening to her talking about her art is fascinating. She has such an enthusiasm! Thank you guys for this interview.
22:10 everyone is rightfully triggered by this download folder malpractice! (love the variety of people you all are highlighting - makes your show so useful)
Color Coding is VERY!!! important it saves me so much time and makes the timeline "searchable." I couldn't imagine changing music every 30sec it takes me 3hrs minimum to find "THE" song. I for some reason find it hard to reuse the same song because I fear it makes the viewer feel like they've seen the video before.
Just wanted to say thank you so much ! I’ve been following your videos on your main channel (Hillier Smith) for a few weeks and I’m always looking forward to a new one. Very instructive, no nonsense, fun, honest … please don’t stop before I pass the 100k mark and give you a shoutout for it!
tHanks for the details of how a video is pieced together by a team.......and tHanks for the human moment at the very end. Great video...Great Podcast.........It is time for breakfast....oh, That's great too!
Just posted 13 minutes ago!!!! Fantastic!! .... I told my secretary to hold all calls! (Wait...I don't have a secretary....that was my cat....same difference)
Normally in reality tv they get subjects to speak in present tense in their post interviews. For the reasons you outlined. Just to keep the audience in the moment.
One of the main reasons why film/tv industry still uses Avid is because of its stability. No unexpected crushes which is very important if you work on serious projects.
If anyone ever needs animal shots, let me know, that’s all I have 😂 Sorry, I’m laughing because it’s my niche so what a great intro for me specifically haha. Just sitting back to watch this episode now- somehow I missed this one, I swear RUclips didn’t send me a notification! Regardless, excited to watch!
You should tag them as creative common licensed so people who are looking for stock footage on RUclips can find them easier. Maybe that can get you some exposure.
Would like you guys to check out a movie called "Thallumaala" specifically for its editing . Want to know what you guys and other editors watching this think about it !
I use CapCut! 🤭🫣😂Haha! I have never invested in a video editing software, but I hope to sometime soon to open up my options with variability in editing.
Thanks for having me!! I love doing behind the scenes 🥰
You use more colors than I do lmao. GG

I gotta say that I’m really happy to see the variety of people getting invited to the editing podcast ❤

one of my favorite videos from you guys! very fascinating to learn how methodical the editing process is for YB
The way she laughed at CapCut was like a dagger through my heart 😂
Capcut's good for editing fast and simple content for social media, but for big projects, hell no!
This has been the most valuable video yet! I love learning from these editors 🤘
22:10 everyone is rightfully triggered by this download folder malpractice! (love the variety of people you all are highlighting - makes your show so useful)
when she said she watches in 2x speed I feel so validated I always do that yesssss
I love how she avoided saying the man who shall not be named
Y.B. are the whole Try Editors team are crushing it.
This felt like 5 minutes! Really enjoyed this 😊

Love it!
Normally in reality tv they get subjects to speak in present tense in their post interviews. For the reasons you outlined. Just to keep the audience in the moment.
hell yeah!
This video is gold
Another great episode!! I took some awesome notes!
I think this interview proves that this channel and its community could probably benefit from a crash course in file/sequence management.
Wait not all professional editors are oragnized? I guess I am special too lmao
what a skill. thanks for the upload, guys 👍
Three of my faves!
Awesome video!! Great tips!

Could you guys break down some of your Mr.Beast Edits? Like you are going to interview each other? :D
ayooo u should get mack and eirc or johnny harris and his editors on the pod. both prob the best editing on youtube right now

This is such a quality podcast. Coming from Jordan's channel and I really shouldn't have been surprised lol
I think stock footage can be scary for new editors because we don't have a sense of how copyright works for it.
This is amazing content
I LOVE YB!
When are you two going to switch to Davinci Resolve?
I love this channel but it always bothers me how the faces are blurry on the wide shot lol
Would like you guys to check out a movie called "Thallumaala" specifically for its editing . Want to know what you guys and other editors watching this think about it !
lolalolalola
What do you guys think of Davinci Resolve? Have you tried it?
Reason for the Turkey?????
Not meant to offend anyone, but Women In general Edit way better than most man (if not all)
Yeah, you're right on this one. Being an editor was a woman's job in Hollywood years ago.
I use CapCut! 🤭🫣😂Haha! I have never invested in a video editing software, but I hope to sometime soon to open up my options with variability in editing.
