Getting that *Perfect* Fit on My 18th Century Gown

  • Hello Friends! This week we are finally tackling the 18th century dress repair that i have been avoiding for like nine months! Last year I went to see Abby and Nicole and they essentially tore apart my 18th century Robe Anglaise (while I was wearing it!) and put it back together with a much better fit. Unfortunately, when i got it home, I had no idea how to deal with the alterations they made and how to preserve those alterations while I unpinned everything and tried to put it back together. This week I finally decided that it was time to stop being a big chicken, that I was indeed up to the ask, and to get it done. And so I got it done, and it looks amazing. Please come on this time-traveling adventure with me as we visit footage from past Noelle and make this thing happen.

Fun Olympic story: I got to hold the Torch when the summer games were in Atlanta! The relay came through the area I was living in at the time so my parents took my brother and me to see it. There was a retired teacher who ran a leg of the relay and he made it a point to let as many kids as he could in the audience hold his torch. It wasn’t lit at the time so no safety issues lol. It was heavier than I expected, but I was also 8. Each runner gets to keep their torch after they pass on the flame. I saw part of the relay for the Salt Lake City games too, but I didn’t get to hold one there.

I also got to hold an Atlanta Olympic torch! One of my mother’s coworkers was a torch runner through Athens, GA and ran through part of UGA south campus. We were part of a huge group from the office there to cheer her on. She let us all hold it and be photographed with it afterwards and was rather heavier than it looked. Must have been even heavier before all of the fuel burned out! Those games were fun - I was 15 and taking advanced swimming lessons at the newly opened Ramsey center that summer. I got to meet - and have my picture taken with - the Swedish diving team and the Danish wrestling team. Met some of the Hungarian team at a coffee shop locally too. It really was so much fun and makes me feel very sorry that local people at the last two games could not have similar experiences because of COVID.

Nope, I love the inner diatribe of Noelle. Don't ever change. You think just like I do. The gown looks amazing BTW.
FYI the romance in DoW should make more sense in book two I think. It made more sense in the TV show. There are reasons.

*Squeel* 🤩 having the gown rebuilt while still wearing it sounds so cool, can under stand the feeling like a princess! back in the 18th century if my knowledge serves me right, they built the gown on the client. It sounds so cool to me.

I do love me a Doctor Who reference!! 🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉You finished your 18th century dress!! *insert Kermit’s Muppet flail here* It looks so good. It’s incredible how much a perfect fit can improve an already lovely garment, and you’re right about your new stays. They’re very flattering!! Oh, and don’t worry about weird. Some of us deeply appreciate weirdness!
I’m reading “Yarnitecture” by Jillian Moreno. It’s a highly entertaining and very well written book on the structuring of hand spun yarns and how to spin what you want. I’ve made the spinning rabbit hole my permanent address, apparently! I’ve been learning to spin with a Russian spindle, and am so thoroughly hooked, I’m shopping for a spinning wheel. It’s so meditative and fascinating to take loose fiber and turn it into yarn/thread. I’m a happy maker, for sure.
Looking forward to seeing your witchy photos!! The best things are always worth “exploding” for. I have the same problem. 🤣 I’m still ignoring the mess from my last nail art adventure. Be well, and have a fantastic week.

I had a great experience with a friend who knows fitting (I really don't) but lives in a different city doing Zoom fittings when I went to make Sewstine's Kefta... she could see what needed to be done and communicate to me how to do it (although it did require several exchanges of emailed photos of my pattern pieces returned with digital scribbling on them). And now I have a princess seam bodice block and the possibilities are endless!!! It was way WAY better having her present during a visit to help me dial in the changes I need to make to my half-corset mockup cause she could stick the pins in while I was wearing the thing with my arms down and it was a lot less dithering around, but enh, you takes what you gets, right?

The gown is so beautiful ❤️❤️❤️. I somehow like it better than some of the heavy silk ones. That surprises me, because I love your bustle costumes. But the dainty print and ruffles... Anyway, Well done! It's not easy to pick up an old project like that.

Would having a "button hole roll" be helpful? Then you could put them all in order of size and roll them up for easier storage and access? Or even put them in a pencil/knitting needle roll?
I watched some of the figure skating but I was really in it for the curling (first ever Aus team!!!) and the skeleton. My favourite thing to do with sports is make up the names for equipment or moves, and attempt to learn the rules through observation alone... often wildly unsuccessful but amusing for me.

I, for one, have been having a great time watching you finish up projects and make things all tidy and neat. Been also loving the Instagram photos. They came out so cool.
Reading Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs by Caitlin Doughty (Ask a Mortician here on RUclips, though you probably knew that already) and been listening to You're Wrong About (which I learned about from one of your vlogs).

As someone who is just starting my journey into historical costuming i'm delighted to see and hear about your own journey and learning. It's nervewracking to start something so new where many of those you see who share the hobby is so far along (the imagination of every one else being perfect).

You know...if you had a table that fit over/or a cubby that it could go in, you could have access to the big basket AND have a place to put the massive thread case. The basket is already taking up floor space, give it a permanent home that can house the other massive thing. I've been watching this video with MANY interruptions. I've seen the first half, like seven times just so I can get back on track with the costume's fixes and progress.

I enjoyed the books - the first 3 anyway - the romance part doesn't bother me and I didn't feel like they were that long. However, I listen to the Outlander books and they are MASSIVE. I watched the first season of the show, and it was ok - but the 2nd season really irritated me (partially due to the costuming). I also have been waiting for all the episodes of The Gilded Age to start it - but hearing the costume designer didn't think the audience was smart enough to understand the costuming of the era is very disappointing. Ugh.
Please keep vlogging whatever you're doing. We just like checking in and spending time with you each week on your vlogs.

First, thank you for taking my mind off of the world right now. Second, now I very much want to see the end of the figure skating just for the drama (yay for the Japanese girl getting a medal!).
TW: Pet Health Issues (I totally understand if you want to skip this part. I just need to say it.)
Third, this week has been the most difficult time in recent memory for me. My sweet baby has been diagnosed and he'll have a few more months with us. It's gut wrenching and horrifying and a whole bunch of other things that I know you've been through. I wish we didn't go through these things but I guess that's how it goes when we welcome such wonderful creatures into our homes. Your compassion has always been a wonderful light in a sometimes bleak world and I just wanted to thank you for all of your love and kindness. It's gotten me through some dark times and I suspect it'll get me through this one too, no matter how impossible it seems.

Oh no! I am so so so sorry and my only advice is to spend every moment you can with your baby and give him every creature comfort possible. It’ll make him happy and it’ll make you feel a tiny bit better. We let Dakota sleep with us and made her special treats and let her eat wheat thins (what a weird cat). Anyway, hugs, and this sucks and I’m so sorry. 💖💖💖

This was a really great watch; I'm so happy for you getting your dress repaired! It can be hard to delay working on a project that long, but sometimes you need to let it calculate in the back of your mind for a while. I have been rereading the Abhorsen series from Garth Nix, it has been so good to revisit that world especially with the new context of the new prequel book. I haven't been watching much stuff otherwise, though I've been watching a podcast from four people in game industry talking about all kinds of things. It's called Play Watch Listen (on Alana Pearce's channel) and it's so random what topic they actually cover, because they come from different areas (writing/music/journalism/acting). They often disagree on things, but don't argue or avoid the topics, instead just share their perspectives and points, and often change each others minds without that being the goal, which is so much more interesting.

I'm listening to you while I work from home, so it's not too quiet. Except right now I'm a bit overwhelmed at work, and instead of banging my head against the wall I hit, I'm clearing my mind for ten minutes by seeing if the drop spindle I threw into the back of a drawer in a fit of frustration magically works better now I've got wool that doesn't fight me while drafting, and I've also gotten some practice on a better balanced spindle and a simple wheel. It does. Things that are hard and intimidating are possible... So I should probably see if that also applies to work.

I know space is at a premium, but those hatpins and buckles looked interesting. Maybe go on Amazon to buy some clear lucite (tumblers or pen/pencil cups or small vases) containers so those items can be displayed, up high...somewhere? Caveat emptor as sometimes the category you look in (such as makeup brush organizers/holders) can be a lot more expensive than a storage/desk accessory department.
I have only watched 3 episodes of The Gilded Age. Things kind of got real in episode 3, not as much fun as previous episodes. As for the costumes, they are beautiful (FYI loved the fantasy of Bridgerton), but I wonder about historical accuracy.

Thanks for a nice video at the end of a hard week...Dr Who theme was fun. Watch out formfrixion pens. They are temperature sensitive. My two favorite olympics moments were when Lindsay Jacobellis and Nick Baumgartner won their Snowboard cross races, because they've been working so hard at that sport for so long. I also really enjoyed the ice dancers (I feel like a lot of the artistry has been taken out of the other types of skating).
Also, I never thought of the idea of what happens to steamy scenes in books when you are listening to an audiobook instead of reading it. Awkward.

I used to really enjoy the Olympics and always wanted to watch them but never seem to catch them as an adult.
I am picking apart the hem and cuff of a curtain i thrifted to make a wearable mock up of some shorts. The curtain is linen Rayon so it will be perfect for my Hawaii trip I think. I am just waiting on some interfacing for the waistband and then I’m gunna cut it out and sew.
I may also consider printing another pattern I got and taping it together and making a mock up of that pair since they will take less fabric than the others.
I have been kind of taking a break from audio books cause i tune out and then come back and have no idea what’s been happening for X amount of time. I am still in process of reading HP5 it’s been slow going mostly because my husband got us switches so I’ve been playing games on that and on PC.

At least where you are, you will never have the Minnesota Frixion pen problem (where the marks come back in extreme cold-they iron right back out, but it’s a thing. Which also means if you ever lose them prematurely, you can put it in the freezer and they come back). I have two of the F & M hampers and I stack them. They are full of fabric!

Yay your gown looks great. I have one I need to alter to be bigger. I also have the problem of my petticoat and sometimes my stays showing at that spot on the waist.
Right now I'm working on an apron and my first self drafted dress.

Another relaxing, just hanging out and getting things done video. Do think that you should definitely find a use for the F&M basket as it is too lovely and useful to be given up easily. Besides you may want to use it for a lovely themed picnic in the future. Would recommend making a liner or interior support frame for it depending on the use you put it to but make it so that it can always be retrieved for its original use. I have a similar dilemma with a tall round cheese box that I bought from an antique store - shaker style. I did not want to alter it but it was impractical for its original use. Presently I use it to store my vintage hats and have a re-enforcement frame inside with my dress form on it like it was a platform. It’s very useful and gets the form to a better height for me to work - especially on hems.
Finished the All Souls trilogy and Time’s Convert - endings felt bit rushed and wished for more on secondary characters - but overall fairly good. Not sure I’m going to rush out to purchase copies for personal library. Am now reading F. Dugan’s Hidden Histories and Ancient Mysteries of Witches, Plants, and Fungi. Interesting archeo and ethnobotanical study. Just something to fulfill my need for “and now for something completely different” after marathoning an entire series.

P.S. - definitely with you on the whole Adult Twilight and cutting back on the Romance sections. Personally was more interested in the characters (especially secondary ones), the histories, etc. Just one of those series where the concept is interesting but the execution is just not on par (for me) with that concept. Still, was definitely worth reading and books better than tv series.

My favorite parts of this video: the Doctor Who transitions and the Georgian buckles. I just finished reading GNOMON, by Nick Harkaway. I read Discovery of Witches a while back and was really disappointed. I loved the way it started, with alchemy and scholarly stuff, and the story only went downhill for me from there. I may have given the second book a try, but didn't finish. Not a fan of the flavor of romance in them, so I headed back to reading fan fiction for that sort of thing.

The dress looks fabulous. Yay on finally getting it done.
Noticed on your list that you have boob crescents . Or as i call them bust buddies :) I'm seriously needing some and cannot find any instructions or vids anywhere. Which has surprised me.
I'm trying to work on my Regency outfit. Made a complete hash of the short stays (how i don't know) I'm now trying to figure out how to take out a lot of skirt fabric and shorten the dress as the amount of fabric in the skirt and the length is not going to play nice with the wheelchair. Found a pattern and some vids on lazy stays. Going to make some of those. Aoden has decided that they want a 17th C. Kaftan, so have spent the day washing and ironing 5 meters of cotton drill and 2 meters of extra wide cotton sheeting. They can be such a tart when it comes to Historical ish Outfits 🙂
Mug of tea and vids of my costubers is the order of the evening. Listening to the wind howl and rain beat on the windows. Snow forecast tomorrow so should get some sort of sewing done.

Congratulations on fixing your 18th century gown (now I just need motivation to tackle my own mending pile, which is much less tempting than all the shiny new projects I want to work on). I'm making a vest using couture methods, which is presenting all sorts of new challenges since it's my first tailoring project. I'm reading "Heart of Flames" by Nicki Pau Preto - it's the second book in a YA fantasy trilogy about phoenix riding warriors. Also just started reading Ovid's Heroides (because I'm also a classics nerd), which is basically a set of letters from the women of Greek myth to the men who wronged them.

Great job on fixing the 18th century gown.
I currently have three different sewing projects going at once, two of which are almost done, and I am struggling to finish even one of them. The chemise just needs the neckline done and the apron just needs a pocket, but I am so over dealing with white linen that I can't find the motivation to just finish them. The flannel PJs still need to be assembled, which will take a while. Maybe I will manage to finish them before winter is over.

All my sewing plans are on hold due to my little mishap, so I will be living vicariously through all the incredible people who document their sewing journeys on RUclips and Instagram for the next 6 weeks or so. Hopefully I’ll be back sewing sooner than that, but it will depend on how quickly I regain full movement of my arm (because of course it was my right arm and Im right handed)

Sorry if you cover this later in this video, but before I forget: If you want to keep the old straps for patching, but not necessarily in this drawer (and someone you'd know to look for them), I've heard you can always baste them on the inside of the garment or something like that. Might not work great for this as I think the skirt is unlined, so not sure you could do it invisibly and they'd get some extra wear in the bodice (and might show, but thought I'd mention in case it gave you any cool ideas :)

    Yay for finishing the dress!!
I do like romance (either as an a or B plot), but I’ve found I’ve gravitated towards fanfic for that fix because the authors I follow for fanfic tend to handle it better without being cringey or hitting me with elements that I’ve realized are suuuuuper problematic.
And I finished the last embroidery piece I was working on , and now I’m working on a pair of pies to represent my grandma. One is a slice of a chocolate pie that was a family favorite she would make, and the other is a full covered pie and the pie plate is colored to represent one she used all the time (that I have).

Yay for finishing the gown and it looks lovely.
I am listening to Graphic Audio's version of Ordinary Magic by Devon Monk (a movie in your mind :) is their tag line, Audible has some of their releases, too)...seems a bit more like a genderflipped hard boiled in their version, but gods on holiday and mysteries and such, with vampires and weres and the like with conspiracies and more :)
I finished my dress' final seams by hand instead of being lazy since the fabric is really pretty and I didn't want visible seams running down the edges (did that while listening to Bones of the Past by Drew Hayes). It's a bit chilly for me to wear it since it's sleeveless and I don't quite want to wear my 10yo hoodie over it (it has E. A. Poe's The Raven on the back in the shape of a raven and I love it soooooo much...it's faded, and the left hand pocket is a little loose and it's not quite as sweatshirt soft as it once was, but I plan on wearing it until it's all holes (none so far that don't belong, knock on wood)).
    Anyways, have a wonderful week.

I didn't watch the Olympics. I don't care any more. I can't say why, but I don't watch either summer or winter Olympics even though I volunteer at several events that contribute to the advancement of competitors in certain sports.
I did watch the first episode of Discovery of Witches. I haven't decided whether to spend the money to continue watching.
I have a top drawer that looks like yours. It is cutting tools, and measuring tools, and fastening tools, and marking tools. Threads are in the bottom drawer for now.
My grandmother and mother taught me to sew and both were using tracing paper and a tracing wheel. Tailor tacks were something I learned on my own later. There is a tracing wheel in my marking tool arsenal.

Congrats on getting that dress done and that it fits you the way you want it to fit!!! All of the work was worth the time and trouble. It looks so pretty on you. I hope you will be able to wear it soon! You had said that you wanted to make some clothes for you to wear in your everyday life, so how about choosing a T-shirt or a pair of jeans for the next project? Something that won't take so much effort and time. Much less stressful. I love the Olympics and completely agree with what happened in the figure skating competition this time. There is some talk from the Olympic Committees of several countries to ban Russia for a period of time due to their blatant use of banned substances. It wasn't the skater's fault. Her managers/trainers are to blame and that is why some want them banned, Plus the President of the International Olympic Committee said the way her coaches treated her was offensive and certainly not in the skaters best interest..For God's sake, she was 15 and depending on her coaches to make sure all of the rules were carried out and they did nothing of the sort. I watched all of the curling games that were on. That is my favorite, then skating, then hockey and bobsled. I do like the biathlon too, but I didn't get to see that this time. I was watching the competition live, so I was up at all hours, sleeping 2 hours and then up for some other competition! It was crazy, but a very fun two weeks for me. I have been going through withdrawl! Thanks for the fun video and again congrats on completing the dress!

a relative is spawning so lots of baby knitting, in the past week I'm like a conveyor belt of tiny things, making a stashbuster blanket so lots of audio books, I polished off Wylding Hall which is nicely eerie and am working through The Providence Rider by Robert McCammon which are great detective books set in the very early 1600s new york, as I'm on book 4 I have to recommend them [they're 24 hr ones too]. I've fallen in love with Xianxia so I've polished off pretty much all the danmei on Netflix [the untamed, word of honor] and more on youtube and am currently watching the wind over louyang on iqiyi [which is like britbox but for Asian tv]. I have actually got to the stage where I can knit stockingette and garter whilst watching subs - the blanket has shaping in every other row so I can't watch it atm. I'm rereading Weaveworld by Clive Barker because I had a carnival mood when I needed something else to read and I had read the night circus more recently [if you haven't read the Starless Sea by Erin Morganstern yet I SO rec it]

Looks like a really productive vlog. I also feel the same way about romance in books. It doesn’t really add much for me. I did find what I saw of the show kinda cool though some of what they did with the horses made me feel like the actors ain’t done more than pony rides beforehand.
I’m still in drafting limbo with my 1890s trousers but, I’m coming to understand the logistics of how each line works.
I’ve had a lot derail this week cause my shoulder decided to dislocate and now I have to make a decision on whether I should cancel a duct tape dummy plan I had with friends or like trust I can handle the process even tho uh I can’t raise my left arm and I can’t really put my chest compression on that I’d be wearing with most of the clothing and costume items I’d be using it for. I don’t know what to do.
