I actually did this project exactly a year ago as a birthday gift for a close friend (that I'd watched Our Flag Means Death with). His favorite color is pink so I made it out of 100% cotton pink fabric and a pink and purple butterfly print. I drafted my own pattern from his measurements after looking at online examples. I'd stumbled on the B&T video and decided to go with their method of construction (machine sewn on my surger). When I got to the "turning portion," it was mind bending, and I think I watched that portion of the video something like 6 times as I was going through the steps. I do feel like it saved me a lot of effort in the long run, but wow - it's hard to keep track of the steps when you are used to modern "bagging" techniques!
I used that same pattern again later, as he'd commissioned me to make another robe for him to wear to the Mexico City PRIDE parade, out of an embroidered floral net material. I only used a single layer of the fabric (unlined) and used bias binding tape on the outer edges to finish and stabilize it. This also came out great and the love the way this pattern hangs.
I have yet to make one for myself... but I have plans to!

I'm in the midst of Halloween costume making. My son wanted to be a Jedi and he decided we should all be Jedi. His costume is done, I'm struggling with motivation to get mine and my husband's done, but I'm cautiously optimistic!

Every robe I have ever purchased has left me just a bit disappointed. My mom made one for me in 1970 that I loved and wore until I wore it out. It was perfection. I made one in 1980 that was almost perfectly satisfying. You have inspired me to make one again. I love yours. It is just what a robe should be. Robe/wrapper/whatever! Thanks.

I love it. The color is to die for. Very elegant. I hope you have a wonderful trip.
I don't know where the little snip in the fabric ended up on the garment but it can be a fun excuse for a bit of embroidery. A small feather 🪶, butterfly 🦋 or bumblebee can be a cute cover for a little fabric oops. I've even done it over a stain that refused to budge. 😊
I hope you have a great time seeing P!nk !! I love her and am totally jealous except I'd die in a crowd. I'll live vicariously through you 😊

    • My heart felt for ya about that tiny hole cut into the copper, but agree it will likely be unnoticeable.
Regarding your questions at the end:
    • I’m currently making a vegetarian potato and corn chowder (and missing adding ham or sausage -so M can eat it.
    • This month, we’re mostly watching a movie from our giant list of Halloween movies. Last night, M & I watched Dr. Dream (The Shinning’s sequel). Also, Loki and The Golden Bachelor and Survivor…
    • I mostly listen to scary/spooky/paranormal story compilations, such as those from Mr. Ballen.
    • I’m mostly reading my iNews feed and am still deciding what new book to read. Prolly gonna me a period haunted murder mystery something. 😉
Lastly, hope you have a great time at Pink!! 💚

Looks great! I love those tricky techniques. My grandmother used to tell me how she never had a sewing machine and did all her mending by hand. She would say how a stitch in time meant less work later. She always checked her kids clothing when she washed them, also by hand. She used to say “wash you smalls in the sink at night and they will be ready to wear again the next day. She had lots of those sneaky tricks that blow your mind because you never would have thought of doing it that way. Now I know a good way to make any kind of robe or dressing gown so everything is enclosed on the inside.

mental blocks are different for everyone. nothing wrong with a cut and paste, just follow the directions, kind of project. i get that way with my cooking.
i don't personally know anyone does historical costuming, in fact most of the sewing in my community is quilts, so i never feel bad about using my machine. i'm a beginner who is teaching herself and some of the hand stitches just don't make sense to me.

So I'm frantically sewing bat wings and letting out 18th century breeches for kids' Halloween costume.
And also working on work clothes... and knitting a sweater... and trying to clean my house.
Audiobooks wise... I'm doing a comfort reread of Ken Follett's Kingsbridge series and the Century Trilogy.

    3) I love how the dressing gown turned out and it really suits you.

Yes, I understand about brain function being off. The carbon monoxide leak from the water heater affected mine, but I increased my Benfotiamine vitamin B1 and feel better. I started taking Benfotiamine after being prescribed Metformin which causes subclinical Thiamine deficiency. So Thiamine Benfotiamine has helped my blood glucose control and my brain fog. I don't take antidiabetic meds anymore. I also have Celiac disease which lots if diabetics have concurrently. Up to 90 percent of diabetics have thiamine deficiency and doctors aren't aware. Benfotiamine and Allithiamine have helped me. Dr. Derrick Lonsdale and Dr. Chandler Marrs have explained subclinical Thiamine deficiency in their book. Hope you feel better, too.

It's okay to off load brain function to a pattern, especially when you're working on getting a lot done and getting your brain behaving again. Never feel bad for it.
Also, have fun! (or I hope you had fun, whichever is correct).
I'm reading The First Bright Thing and it's very good. I got it at the library but I added it to my wishlist to get a physical copy even though I'm only about 1/5th in. It's about a fantastical circus traveling the US in the mid-1920s and also the Great War era in NYC and how the lives of people were changed by something that became known as 'spark' affected them and how 2 people in particular seem to be at the nexus of the matter...and also about trying to stop another great war. Very good. Tomorrow, I shall read more ^^ (reading physical books is quite a bit more taxing on body energy than audio books [same for ebooks, too, which is weird, or maybe it makes sense, not sure] so it takes a lot longer to do so, so the books have to be really catching).
I have a plan that should give me me-sewing time in November. I'm hopeful for it. I am happy about the commissions I've gotten, but I want me-crafty time, y'know ;)

Feeling pretty bleh also currently. But I've been working my way through my sewing repairs and alterations pile and hoping to get that done soon. I haven't allowed myself to start anything new project wise as the repairs pile was massive. I do all those for my sister and her family (husband and two kids) plus my mother, my partner, and myself of course, so it piles up quickly. But getting back at diminishing that pile feels good. Though there's a few rather tricky things I've been putting off: my partner accidentally let my bunny into our closet and she ate holes in 2 of my original 1950's kilts. I've fixed holes in things before by recreating warp and weft with thread (victorian style!) but with the patterned fabric I'm a little hesitant. Though repairs are period acurate! We've been watching (the sometimes bad) 1930's-50's black and white films. Most recently 12 Angry Men 1957.
Hope you get your so-jo back!!

I also have tickets for the opera that I got suuuper discounted, I could never afford the actual price, and I have to finish sewing the dress I want to wear there. Very interesting but being very dyslexic I will stick to bag lining things.
I am about the start a project for my son-in-law, 17th century musketeer outfit for his fencing persona. I have the fabric for the shirt. My stash is mostly exotic silks which he doesn't want and I agree, it will get dirty and roughed up when fighting. My viking costume worked well and was comfortable for the event last weekend.
I am just rereading old murder mysteries. And building a shed.

    • @m.maclellan7147
      @m.maclellan7147 11 месяцев назад +1

You may want to take 2 sets of measurements for his fencing outfit !?
One "at rest" & two after a work out and in the most extreme body movements!
I fenced a bit, maybe a half a years worth before my wrists said, "HELL, NO!"
I found it surprising how INTENSE fencing is, and in a very short period of time, you are sweating & your muscles are "bulked out"!
Anything that might feel fine, at rest, might feel VERY restrictive once fencing !
Also, be aware if he is doing actual competition. Modern fencing competition requires wires & gizmos !
It is a sport I wish I still could do, but I couldn't even unlock my car door some nights as my wrists (ganglion in each wrist) were SO painful !

    • @lenabreijer1311
      @lenabreijer1311 11 месяцев назад +2

@@m.maclellan7147 thanks for the suggestions. This is not modern fencing. He has been rattan heavy combat fighter for years but due to some issues with his back he is switching to fencing with the blessings of his physiotherapist. So going from Norman to early musketeer.
I tried fencing when I was a lot younger but my wrists weren't up to it and the fencing mask made feel like I wasn't on the ground. All those little squares made my eyes and brain go squirrelly.

Nicely done and thanks for sharing your sewing journey. It is nice to see what others are working on and to get ideas. It would have driven me nuts to have to piece that bottom. Sometimes it can't be helped. If all fabric could be 62" width lol.
I thought of a red velvet robe with the same pattern and a black satin lining. Some decorative stitching here and there too.
Am on a hiatus from reading right now. Nothing is interesting to me. I do some news and such but that's it. I don't feel like rereading anything either. I burned out on Pride and Prejudice variations and sequels. Oh well.
My own sewing projects are just sitting there as I've taken in mending and alteration work. Sometimes the customer has bizarre ideas about what should be done and to do it would make the garment way beyond ugly. I won't work on dirty clothes for mending and really have to put my foot down about it. The upside is that I will be able to the projects dancing in my head sooner.
Watched The Lost Boys last night and it was a nostalgia trip. I think that tonight will be a Dark Shadows marathon.
I wish that I could go see the Winchester Mystery House again but I'm 1,800 miles away.

Oh my, the color of this robe looks amazing on you! You did a good job explaining the pattern, once I saw you start doing it, I understood. An interesting technique! Watching Loki, rewatching season 2 of Wheel of Time and immersed in Halloween and Fall cross stitching! Have fun at the Ball!

It looks amazing!!!!! The colors remind me of a silk kimono my grandma (or maybe great-grandma) brought back from a trip to Japan many years ago…stunning!!!

That turned out really well! I am doing all of the Burnley and Trowbridge sew alongs, but I haven't gotten to the wrapping gown yet. I have my material already, though. It's helpful to see someone go through the process in advance.
I am excited about new Our Flag Means Death, too. I think more episodes are being released today, so yay!

Looks like a great project for an easy win! Hope you're getting your sew-jo back. I ordered some more silk on buy-one-get-two so am slowly stashing something to use when I do finally crack and make something I can't wear everyday, I think I'm up to about 12m in several browns that are hopefully complimentary... Definitely won't be until after I've had some success with either stays or a corset. I finished my shirt except for trim (which is in the heap of sewing stuff behind me on the sofa) and got the boning into a vest that wasn't sitting right, am halfway through mending two pairs of pants then once I darn some socks I'll be making a Swiss Waist to wear to an event in early November. I'm going to try to make it reversible black and purple, maybe with piping, but we'll see what I actually find in the stash once I've done a mockup with the purple canvas I'm using. as the strength layer.
I'm not watching anything except the yootoobs these days, I can't even commit to watching a movie. Blargh. I want to re-watch the Crow since it's my favourite spooky season movie but I haven't watched it in three years. Then again, if I just play the soundtrack, it pretty much plays itself in my head.

Ok. So I watched your video. Then I dutifully watched B&T's. It seemed to me that yours was the clearer one. So I just watched yours again...yes. I think your explanation of how to do the flip trick is much clearer than B &T's. What is not clear to me, however, is if you just draw the pattern on your fabric from the measurements how do you get the size for the neck/collar piece? Yours turned out beautiful, so elegant! Thanks.

Oh I just measured the back of my neck! It doesn’t need to be exact, so ballparking it is fine!

Love this! I want to make one of these so badly. I will get to it eventually. Still walking the picket line in solidarity with SAG. Watched “The Thing About Harry” & a Norwegian TV show called “Skam.” To the end.

Love this and definitely have to look into putting a pin in the pattern for later! Right now I’m in the middle of pinning my ponies Halloween costume for a show next weekend. I decided he’s going to go as Zero and I’ll go as Sally. And because I’m completely insane I’ll make both costumes. Oh… and I bought the fabric today lol. Wish me luck!

What level are you at in June's journey now?
I played years ago and picked it up this year starting from scratch already at level 400. 'Been playing it a lot when I have sewing productivity block.
I know this is made and done before I see it, but when i saw your addition on the sleeve I just thought "add trim/lace (like how some Victorian skirts sometimes have a band of black velvet several inches up from the hem) but turning it under works too. Also prefer your add scrap then cut shape of pattern after.

Okay so I know I'm a month behind here but like. Is it laziness that had you print the pattern or is it wise use of your resources so you can spend your mental energy on other things? Don't talk down about yourself, it's usually not true.

    • @Costuming_Drama
      @Costuming_Drama  10 месяцев назад

For this particular one, it actually was laziness. It literally would have taken me less time, money, and energy to draw a curve than get that pattern printed, but I just didn’t feel like it! Usually I agree with you tho!
