  • Hello Friends! This week I decided to reform my dress form to be more like me. I brought her over to Nicole Rudolph's house to have a buddy help me sculpt her down and pad her back up. In this video you get to watch basically the entire process, in case you would also like to reshape your dress form to better suit your contours. I am have a little fabric haul and an introduction to my newest kitties! I hope you enjoy!

My favourite part about Dress History/Costuming RUclips is that being made to adhere to impossible dimensions is normalised. Why should someone feel upset that they can’t fit into something that was never designed for them?

This is excellent timing. I just got a cheap dress form that’s a lot smaller than I am and a whole bunch of foam padding. Because of this video, I’m going to be taking a lot more measurements and be more specific about where the padding needs to go. Much love to Winchester and to Pompo. ❤️❤️❤️

Your kitties are so cute! Regarding Winchester’s diagnosis, I’ve heard of many cats living years with FIP, so you never know, he might surprise you. Either way, it’s wonderful that he has a loving home and will be comfortable and happy for however long he has left, which is all any of us can hope for.

That little giggle when you guys cut the boobs straight off gave me life. I'm looking at similarly drastic dress form surgery in the somewhat near future (after actual surgery), so I'll definitely revisit then. Mine's not foam, but it is adjustable so hopefully I can set it to match in the chest and pad out the rest. Hopefully Nicole's book will be out by then so I can have the same body block experience, it sounds like she's solving some of the struggles I have with fitting stuff. And it's nice to hear you talk about how fitting something like this can be confronting and working through that, that's a recurrent theme in my crafting server. I definitely save fitting for good days.

🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛😻😻 The two new house panthers are lovely! I hope Winchester keeps healing well. I'm so happy he landed in such a great home for his remaining time.
The dress form came out really well. It's good that you can use it with your corset, stays, or as is. Yay for teamwork with a friend!
I'm still knitting away for all the kids in my family. No major issues so far, except I had to order one more skein of yarn for one of them because I came out just a couple of yards too short to finish the ribbing around the hood. I'm going to undo the hood ribbing that is already started, and redo it all in one length of yarn, rather than risk having a visible join right next to kiddo's face.
I'm rereading a book called Labyrinth by Kate Mosse. It is interesting, an intertwining of three plots-- two set in modern times, and the third in the year 1209 in what is now southern France. It involves intrigue, secret societies, and of course history. When I first read it, I was completely unfamiliar with fashion history. I still don't know much, but I'm noticing it a lot more on this reading, now that I've started watching dress history RUclips. I think it mostly does seem to be in keeping with the setting. (There are some questionable decisions, like wearing one's best cloak and indoor slippers to gather herbs by the river, but nothing actually impossible, fashion-wise, that I can spot.) The one thing that has really bugged me so far is an anachronistic mention of a spinning wheel; a drop spindle would have been what they were actually using, but perhaps the author thought not many readers would know what that was. Anyway, despite any slight textile-related shortcomings, it is a good read, focusing mainly on religious conflict and persecution, and some interesting linguistic history.

Thank you so much for this video and normalising an actual woman's body. I just turned 62 this week and have been struggling again with the 'shape I'm in'. Hearing and seeing you (and Nicole) represent your real body was very helpful, as I could see aspects of myself and hear them as acceptable. It's hard to explain. I don't even know why I'm being so honest here, as I've not spoken about it with anyone else. But your willingness to be real and honest is greatly appreciated. Thank you Noelle.

❤ you're being honest here because the costuming part of RUclips is super accepting at awesome. And you need to know that you are loved and supported at any age no matter when your journey to body acceptance happens.
I recently had to square with the fact that I literally have some very strange still sold deformities that weren't detected for a really long time and it makes it impossible to ever achieve even what I would want my body shape to be because my bones are literally screwed up. And squaring with that has been a major Journey. I would recommend you watch Bernadette Banner she has scoliosis watching her has really helped me. It's okay to say that the mass-produced fashion isn't for you to get the proportions they wanted without damaging their body or constructing their movement in everyday tasks. What people see on the outside doesn't have to be your actual body❤ especially late eighteenth and early nineteenth century is super good for learning these tricks❤
You need to love and accept your body and figure out ways to achieve what you want to feel like and present yourself as without damaging it.❤

It is to take apart my favorite unicorn blouse (sadly damaged) and make a pattern from it to recreate it. This blouse has the right sleeve length, hangs from my bust, not my belly, and is just the right length for my torso. At this time, I am watching, learning, and planning. The fall/winter will be soon enough to jump in so that I can enjoy the summer. Thank you for your lovely and entertaining content. Congratulations on your new kitties!

OMG I have a very similar torso shape - my side view is a COMPLETELY different body shape from my front/back view! all of my "waist" in is the front and much lower than my actually waist. I may steal your phrase and start referring to it as my seedy underbelly! Also I have ZERO hips - my ass is actually concave. (I'm not kidding, there is absolutely no junk in my trunk) Someday maybe I'll have a dress form and the room to keep it in.... Also, what a SWEET BOY!!! and such a slinky girl!! 😻😻 new kitties are awesome - discovering their personalities and watching them grow and change is the best!! We recently started watching What We Do in the Shadows. We've definitely been missing out..... Sewing wise I have a couple skirt projects, still working on my bodice block so I can make my dress and I just bought an entire spool of cording for a future (probably never going to happen) project. So you know, if anyone needs some 1/8" cotton cord, I've got 450 yards of it....I guess everything will be piped now for the rest of my life! And we're going to Montreal in like a week and a half, which is kind of sneaking up on me!!!

Kitties! I love them. I'm glad your form is more appropriately shaped now. My mother-in-law keeps trying to lend me her 'adjustable' form (the kind with dials in it) and I keep trying to explain that no matter how big it goes, I am a fat rectangle, I am not curvy in the slightest. I actually think I might be better off trying to find a dress form meant to be for a man and just add a belly, because I have very square shoulders and a hug rib cage.

  • @ShinySarah44
    @ShinySarah44 Год назад +1

This was such a good process to see; I've been mulling over how to do similar for my dress form but it's one of the hard shell type so it'll be trickier. Particularly with the boobs because oh boy are they Modern Ideal Size/Shape/Placement which is Not what I necessarily am aiming for. But the waist and belly are the main thing I need to change as it has weird bumps and dips from the mechanism of lengthening the torso which makes fitting a waistband very strange. Seeing how the padding was wrapped over then covered; and using the bodice block to test fit as you go; all really handy for me to think it through for when I finally get to doing it.

The end notes about relative squishinesses of different parts and such was also really interesting. I have an adjustable one, but have hopes that if I adjust it to it's smallest size (I'm actually larger then it goes) it'll give me the space needed to pad it out to have my short waist, sway back, no hips, and a belly. Which sounds like a lot of work and so I keep putting it off. Perhaps this year I'll actually convince myself to do it.

Haha, accepting what your bour body is is the first step (I have decided my body shape is "dad-bod with boobs" cause I get that belly hanging over the waistband or else my pants fall down). I'm still at the "learning how my measurements lie" stage of self-fitting, stuff like my hips measure 39" but if I wear pants with a waistband bigger than 35" they'll fall off without undoing the button. And every time I've measured my boobs for a drafting project (40") I've had to take in two to four inches cause mine are wide and don't stick out much. And I need to use a different waist measurement if it's loadbearing from if it's a dress, my "natural waist" everyone tells me to measure at is 32" but it's above the bottom of my ribcage and is a very uncomfortable place to have a waistband that has any weight on it, so for a skirt or pants I have to go two inches lower to where my navel is and it's about two inches bigger, but if I tense my core it gets smaller and my waistband slides down so even something that seems simple like fitting a waistband takes a mockup.

This was an awesome project! Really highlights the idea that it’s not just measurements that make good fit but how the body is actually shaped. I inherited a Uniquely You form from a friend and it was no where near me, but it made a perfect base for a Bootstrap cover and then I just padded and stuffed until she was me! When I posted her on a Facebook page someone thought I’d messed up because the boobs basically dip in and then morph into my belly. But I reassured them that indeed, this is my actual shape! These techniques are also helpful because our bodies change and who wants to get a brand new dress form (or can afford to!!) Great project!

Definitely need to get onto this myself. My old dress form is closer to my body shape, but her boobs and shoulders are completely wrong which is a pain for fitting historical garments as you found... I bought a smaller one so I can pad her up to the right shape and not just the right measurements. I hope I can have as much grace with my body as you have had :)

As I'm getting more comfortable with my sewing skills the more I realize I really need a dress form. I'm squishy, so I know I'll have to do a lot of padding out, but I know it will be worth it. Now I need to figure out which base to start with. I thought I wanted one from Joann, but another costuber hates hers and she and I are basically the same size, so...
I'm making Ora Lin's pirate pants, men's shirt, and Victorian belt and I'm also knitting a ribbed hat out of wool that was in my stash. Without intending to, it looks like I'm going to be a pirate for Halloween. I just need some shoes that are appropriate for not only the costume but October in San Francisco.

That's so awesome, I'm glad you finally have an accurate virtual you to work from! Doing that is something I REALLY need, because just like you, standard measurements sure don't tell the whole story! My problem is a wide ribcage - so like I'm 35-28-36 (Yeah, NOT curvy at all) but I have this bizarre wide bottom of my ribcage and I'm super long waisted (like, point of shoulder to front waist is 18", and I'm only 5' 2" tall!!!) so the absolute most I can corset in is two inches because every corset I've bought rubs on the bottom of my ribs. Even all the stays/corsets I've made do the same thing, but I've not figure out a way to account for that in patterning a corset. Sigh. Someday maybe I'll figure it out! Can't wait to see what all you make on your "new" you! :D

That is so funny that your two new kitties are black. Back when it seemed like EVERYONE had a grey cat, I ended up with 4 Russian Greys and a Russian Grey Siamese, all brothers. My oldest took one of the greys, and the rest now live in my house (because they're too stupid to live outside.) We had two outdoor cats: a little old lady black and orange on white calico, and an orange Tabby. Every one is fixed, and over the panana, our little old lady, Baby Snow, passed on. She was the grandmother and great grandmother of everyone else. We figured, Welp, nothing but fixed boys, I guess we're just going to ride this out. So the indoor cats are 5 and the outdoor cat is 6, almost 7. and then, over Thanksgiving, we had two tiny babies just show up. Both, barely weened, still a little clumsy, and the outdoor cat, who comes ino the heated garage when the weather is bad, got very worried. So we managed to get just close enough to these two Ghibli Studio soot sprites long enough to catch them -- and now they live full time in the garage. Alias Smith (Smitty) and AnDonovan "Baby" Jones. Both Tuxedo cats. Baby is a long hair with two white tufts behind her ears like flowers and a line of white on her hind end that makes it look like she's wearing a single white petticoat among her black skirts.
And Smitty -- WOW, what a surprise there. You know how the Medieval artists catch a lot of crap for not knowing what a cat looks like? Well, they may not have been wrong, after all. Alias Smith (or Alien Smith, as he is sometimes called) has got a Medieval face. It's kind of flat and upright like a human's -- and yet . . . well, like a badly painted Medieval cat.
Dress dummies-- my old one served me very well, for a little over 20 years, and she died suddenly, so I got a new one -- Kim. I never named my old one, but I couldn't help but name my new one. Very similar shaped above the belly button, and below the belly button -- let's just say it's a good thing I'm into antique clothes, and she definitely doesn't need a bum pad.

You are correct, it's a seedy underbelly. BUT! Only when garments down fit well on the stomach area. As you are doing here, you're tailoring everything so that your clothes actually fit BETTER. So, then a belly becomes a belly. It's other people who have the problem, not us. More of us to love!

I work very slowly and sporadically, so it has been taking forever. Now I just have to finish sewing on the pieces of ribbon I am using to mark out my waist, hip, bustline, etc. It's really awkward sewing the ribbon on and I really tempted to just skip marking the bust and under bust lines.

It’s interesting how hearing someone talk about their body shape makes you think about yours.
You pointing out you are narrow from the front but wide from the side made me think about my reflection and realize why I weigh what I do but don’t look like I weigh that. It’s in the front to back weight not the side to side weight.

A me shaped dress form would really be helpful but it's something to save for in the future. This will be a great resource for then, not just for the techniques but for also reminding me that a me shaped thing is a good thing. Me is good. I don't have a seedy underbelly but I've always referred to my upper belly bump as my chevron, because it's kind of chevron shaped with the apex above my belly button lol.
