Hello Friends! I decided to hop aboard a group challenge this month and tackle #ShirtwaistSeptember with a CUTE dress pattern that i bought ages ago and have been itching to make every since. The PatternSewciety Frances Shirt Dress was a dream to sew up, with almost no pattern alterations at all, and is absolutely so comfortable! Highly recommended!

Loved this concept so I decided to join the fun. I'm almost finished my shirtdress. It's made from a collection of my son's discarded shirts. I'm so happy with it. Very casual and relaxed fit but feels crisp and feminine.
Btw, I'm an Australian size 20; definitely plus size. The key for me was a higher waistline so that the skirt falls from that point and skims over everything.

So, update. I can walk again. It's just a matter of time building muscles. Importantly, we found that the constant pain I'm feeling is not from my feet, but my back. Yeah, back!
And, I, too, am doing Shirtwaist September. I have a shirt dress that was given to me years ago that is WAY too long in the torso. It has been living in The Pile TM, and I thought that this is the perfect excuse to get it trimmed and re-fitted. I have several vintage patterns for shirtwaist dresses, but right now, I'm making a chemise a la reine and French jumps for a couple of my daughters, and the re-fit is all I will have time for.

I haven't had a shirt dress in years but you've convinced me to make one.
I did make a flannel button up mens style dress shirt before with a total cheat pattern ( I took apart a shirt that fit just right but was on its last leg) I had to guess what to sew first and didn't even think about interfacing.😂 In the end it came out really well for a first try at a garment with sleeves and buttons. Although the sleeves did shrink up a bit after a few washes in spite of the prewash.

It has not sold 😢 way to big for me now due to bought it when I was at my biggest. But it was way to big to try adjust. But it was defently plus size and from store. They fit all Bosses. • @Needleandfur
    @Needleandfur 18 часов назад

The only thing that is unflattering to someone's shape is...well the cut of the clothing. I'm very high waisted which means I can't wear anything off the peg - and even most patterns I buy I have to adjust to bring the waistline higher otherwise I look like a badly stuffed sausage, no filling at the top with everything squawged around my stomach and hips. The wrong length of hem can make you look squat, and high neck line can give the impression of no neck. If people used the energy in learning about their body shape as they do jumping online and mashing the keyboard - they'd probably feel so much better about themselves.
Sure nobody can where everything - that's just life, but work out what you can wear and get on with life. It's short so enjoy it whilst you can.
Lookin' good btw and love the fabric choice *chefs kiss*

Thanks for sharing the tricks with french seaming, my brain always spins in place when I try to figure out what has to go where and how, and adding pocketses to the equation just bluescreens my brain...
And I have 20m of two colours of flannel, this is a really cute way to make a dress (I literally said, "holy shit that is CUTE!" when you twirled in it, I didn't think I'd like it as much as I do). Though I'm not awesome at buttonholes and currently none of my machines that are theoretically capable of it want to do buttonholes. But realistically there's no reason I couldn't make it with a zipper and fake buttons, or only have holes for the buttons I NEED to undo to get into it. Curious how it'll work with flannel, which is (to quote TheClosetHistorian) very floopy.

This looks amazing. Regarding the need to put a little tuck in the back while attaching the collar, while it looks good and works, check the seam allowances for sewing the collar. For some reason, a lot of patterns used to narrow the seam allowance for these areas therefore making the collar bigger. I foresee more shirtdresses in your future and if I am correct in the seam allowances, your sewing might be easier. I would also make a different pocket pattern so it attaches to the waist seam without the need for adjustments. Look forward to seeing the plaid made up.

I’m pretty sure I will! I need to make a practice hood first, but then I’m on it!

Thanks for sharing. How long did it take you to make your shirt dress?

    • @Costuming_Drama

Maybe like 2-3 days if you sew a fair bit! Not very long at all! The most time consuming part was the hem!

oh honey to fix the outside button stand, you clip the seam allowance on the waist and swap the seam to the outside. If you do it about a half inch deeper in than the folded edge, the top stitched stand will cover up the seam showing and on the inside, the swap over is a half in in from the edge. xo

STUNNING! Looks fantastic and I really do need to learn the French seams on pockets and seams thing; I tend to flat fell them. But I’m now keen to try that. I do have a theory on how pockets themselves could be French seamed… 🤔
When it comes to the blind hem stitch, being the recently medically retired nurse that I am, I remember it as the one that looks most like an ECG trace on a monitor 😂

Oh the method I used did French seam the pockets as well! Check out kittenish behavior on YT for her tutorial!

When we did our shirt module in fashion construction at design school, we were told that folding the button plackets to the outside generally signified a more casual, day-to-day style (perfect for a shirt waist dress), and folding to the inside was for formal/dress shirts. If the designer wanted an outside “fold” but their fabric had a wrong side, they could do a pin tuck, or a “sewn on” placket (as opposed to a “grown on” like the Frances Dress).

Oh yeah, that makes sense! I guess I could absolutely do that! I didn’t even think of that!

Oh yay I’m so glad to be helpful! Your dress looks fantastic, and I love that now that you’re familiar with the pattern you’re already thinking about things that you’ll change/adjust for the next one. I agree about adding stays to help support inseam pockets; I did something similar recently with a Style Arc pattern for some loose pants.
This is the first I’ve heard of Shirtwaist September, but I love the thinking behind it. As it happens, I very recently bought the Jenna Shirt + Dress pattern from Closet Core, but I don’t think I’ll have it sewn up by the end of the month. I have however just finished my first Closet Core Pouf, inspired by your video! 🎉
