I’ve been making these shirts for over 10 years. Good job! If the shirt pulls to the back, move the shoulder seam forward in the collar(less gathers in the back, more in the front). If the collar pulls away from the neck (towards the shoulders), increase the distance from the shoulder to the neck. I always do the collar last and with a fitting for this purpose. A 1/4” forward or backwards can make all the difference.

I made a pirate shirt for my son-in-law last summer. I need to make another one because it is already partly destroyed because he uses it for his fencing. I have a folkwear pattern from the 80s for the shirt. And i have made many simplified versions for myself. I would add a gusset at the slits in the sides. That is where mine tears. I would also cut the neck down lower in a curve in the front, that is not period but it will help your issues. Luke doesn't have the problem because he wears a fencing vest over it that keeps the shirt in place.
Regarding the move, i have moved cross country at least 5 times, and the packers have never said they didn't pack up kitchen cupboards. The last move was about a year ago. I had 2 estimates, one via video and one with a warm body walking through the house. The video one was much too low so i didn't take it. The life one came in a bit lower at the end.

Thanks for sharing this journey. Wonderful outcome.
A note about the back sliding away from the front. If you have a look, your head isn't exactly in the middle of your trunk, it's slightly to the front. That means there is a tendency for the back to need more length and I think you have sorted that bit out. The front of your neck curves around to the front which causes a displacement of the fabric. Making the collar longer will help. This is the main reason we don't put our men in this type of shirt anymore; the neck opening is curved in modern shirts to allow for that displacement. I look forward to your future experiments; if you go that way.
    Thanks again.

Ty for this video. Speaking of the underarm gusset, I watched 10 zillion times, any video I could find on them. My spicey brain turn it in to a yarn ball after a kitten had play time. I just could not wrap my brain around it. Until I cut them and placed them against the body and suddenly my brain clicked. With no video playing haha it was like ohhhh I get it suddenly. Apparently it was the concept that befuddled me. Anyone yours is on of the greatest pirate shirt videos. Ty.

You need to round out the hole towards the back. My creations did that, I rounded out more and more until they stopped. In the center back my hole is about four centimeters from the ironed crease going the other way, and then another centimeter or so for seam allowance. Hooray for the finished pirate shirt! As one who shares almost all your measurements, I suggest making larger underarm gussets to give yourself the bust width you need without having to make the shoulders so wide. Some wide is good, of course, to get the off-the shoulder effect, but on me that means they’re almost mid-bicep and I find the quarter bicep spot looks better, but then I’ve got to get that bust width from somewhere so I just make the underarm gusset bigger. I’m about to start my corset for a fitting with Michelle, and I need to do that before school starts again!

Shirt Sliding hack: I have three. I use crochet cotton or very fine ribbon for these. Works for both modern and historic undergarments.
1: If there is a neck slit, I add two thin ties at the very bottom on the inside that I can ties around the center of my bra/tucked into corset/attached to busk posts. Keeps it generally from sliding back.
2: If that isn't possible or won't look good, I add small ties that I can have at the shoulders/shoulder seam to my bra/corset strap. Sometimes it works on the head of the shoulder to the strap and others I put it so it ties around the top of the cup on the strap. It can depend on the neckline type and where it can hide the easiest.
3: If threads dangling on the inside of the shirt aren't your thing, you can make a thread bar and pass something under it to tie off onto your undergarments.
The one I don't do as much but has worked as well is loops with snaps. Snaps sometimes are visible or can come undone. A thin tie from fine ribbon or crochet cotton works a lot better in my opinion.

I'm still dreaming about what project is next, though I really should be looking at adding some padding to my canvas arms for under my armour and maybe that kirtle I've been trying to get to for over a year... I did at least get my husband's final swimsuit done for his birthday, and got a wearable mockup done for the swimsuit I'm copying for myself. Must remember to mark down the changes I need to make before I forget though!

It could be the weight of the collar causing it to fall back. You also could need a little longer collar. Try attaching about a dozen clear seed beads in the inside by the point of the slit. Then wear the shirt. If it fixes it, you could hide weights in that tiny reinforcement triangle, with decoration, or adding buttons. My mom used to stuff the points of collars with seed beads to keep them laying down.

This post came out at a perfect time. I'm in the middle of sewing my first pirate shirt, and I have not cut the shoulder and front slits, yet. I'm glad you brought up the shoulder shifting to the back because I am worried about that as well. I remembered instructions from "Fit for Real People" by Pati Palmer and Marta Alto about forward shoulders. Their instructions adjusted the shoulder seam to run in a straight line from the neck to the center of the shoulder. Then they have you set the top of the sleeve in at this new seam point that that is shifted forward. Very hard to explain without pictures. I also don't know how to adapt this to the pirate shirt. I'm hoping you figure it all out and let all of us know. Thanks for the great post!

I believe it’s sliding back because the shirt wasn’t designed in the day to be worn open. One would’ve had a cravat tying it closed. And would also have had a waistcoat over it providing friction at the back as well to keep it from sliding down. When you take a garment out of the context it was designed to be worn in it will behave differently… you know how we get upset when we see someone complaining about how uncomfortable it is wearing a corset next to their skin? Yeah, ‘cause that’s not how it was worn in the day? Ahem…

    • @Costuming_Drama
      @Costuming_Drama  Месяц назад +4

I would argue that they probably did wear it this way outside the context of extreme wealth or formal occasions. Pirates, farmers, factory workers, etc, did not go around on the daily wearing cravats while in hot weather and heavy working conditions. I think the fit issues have to do with my body and the construction needing to be tweaked, as all fit issues are.

making the collar closeable will help with the sliding back, also see if you can have someone watch you move your arms and stuff around in it to see if it's catching in the back. Another possibility is that it's just that even though it's big and billowy it's not cut for busts. I have that problem with just about every men's shirt. The fabric slowly creeps up because of the chest bumps, and then falls back over my shoulders.

You have to have at least one WIP that is years (plural) old! The sewing gods demand it ;) But well done for finishing it, and you have also reminded me that I need to get on with my own shirt (with extra protection in the shoulders). I wonder whether there isn't much you can really do about the shirt slipping back when worn. As I should imagine back in the day men would have had at least two more layers on top the shirt which would have kept it in place. You could try sewing a line of buttonhole stiches along the opening of the neck line to keep it in place, which kinda defeats the object of having a wide open neck. But could work - I'm going to try it for me shirt when I get around to making it. But keep up with the chaos vlogs they are always a lot of fun to watch and makes you stand out from other sewing RUclipsrs x

Oh man, I too have a like modern pirate shirt going on right now and I recently set it aside for a bit because it’s turning out very large (because my hips are wide and I honestly overcompensated for it) and I haven’t decided how I want to deal with it yet. I am in the midst of trying to convert my wardrobe to natural fibers because it’s been such a miserable summer for me and we have many miserable summers ahead so I’m getting into my stash of nice thin billowy cottons and linens to reproduce some of my favorite but very sweaty polyester blouses and do some bounding type pieces too.
For my shirt I wanted it a little more modern so I cut the neckline smaller and instead gathered the excess into the shoulder seams and I will just have like a small curved collar piece. The body of it is just really big and since I won’t be wearing it with stays or something shapely over top, I’m debating gathering maybe the bust area into a smaller band kind of like a shirtwaist? Idk, time will tell

I would try making larger neck gussets. The neck gussets are there to accommodate for the slope of your shoulders and keep the neck of the shirt on your neck. I imagine the small gussets are good for people with more square shoulders and larger gussets for more sloped shoulders… Possibly? I just finished two of my own pirate shirts, so I am also trying to figure out the geometry and how to get the fit I am looking for.

I’ve been trying to solve the collar sliding back for the last few months!! My current theory is that we tend to measure in the middle of our necks. But with this style of shirt the bottom of the collar sits at the very base of our neck. Think about what it’s attaching to! Those neck gussets and shoulder reenforcement are on our shoulders! That’s the point where we have to measure around for our collar

I started this last night, then my cat demanded I go to bed with him, even though he doesn't stay in the bed with me, so I finished this morning.
Sometimes, fabric do be like that, not straight, even on the grain lines. I think the shirt came out cute. As to a way to hide the ends of the shoulder reinforcement, what if you sewed in the opposite side gusset, then the shoulder reinforcement, then the same side gusset on top of it? That would hide the end of it between the gussets (I haven't checked to see if someone else suggested this). It came out cute, though, I agree with that, and looks like a nice thing to just throw on when you want to be cool, as well as when you want to pirate it up.
I am currently in the middle of a book called Human Errors: A Panorama of our Glitches, from Pointless Bones to Broken Genes by Nathan H Lents. It's informative and amusing. I'm also rereading the Wicked Witches of the Midwest series by Amanda M Lee. I have my library all set up again and counted my books for the amusement of a discord server.and I have 363 books on my physical shelves, which is about 27' 1" of books (I have 25 Kalax shelves full of books, and each shelf is 13 inches). That amused me to find out. I also got $3 of credit to use at the Friends of the Library store from the summer reading challenge and used that to get 7 new to me books that are in that number....I will read them soon....or eventually. They all sounded really interesting, though 2 I got I'd read before (The Invisible Life of Addie Larue and The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O).
As to watching, I'm pondering rewatching Psych or Dead Boy Detectives. I tend to rewatch more things when I can craft, which I should be able to start doing (slowly) at the end of the month. I'm so excited for that. It'll take about 6 months for my wrists to be fully healed, but I should be at the point where I can craft for a bit at the end of this month as it'll be 6 weeks out from the second surgery.
My longest WIP is 4 years (it took me 4 years in college to crochet a lap blanket because who has time and I took summer classes 3 years and really, who has time during those?) :) So, I get the feeling of "This needs to be done, I don't care how, but it must be done" :)

Dropping the neck down by an inch in the front is the right idea, but if you then center the sleeve on the shoulder re-inforcement, all you have done is make the back longer. To drop just the neck forward, you need to center the sleeve over the old shoulder line, i.e. an inch or so above the shoulder re-inforcement strip. If you fold the shirt completely flat, the neck should not be on the top fold, but sit an inch or so below, and the front and back hems should align. Hope this makes any sense, good work, though - Arrrrrgh!
