One year for the 100 days challenge (which starts Feb 18th this year - I think) I challenged myself to spend time in my sewing studio. Some days all I could manage was to walk in, turn the lights on, turn the lights off, and leave again. But it re-built the habit I'd lost during a challenging time. It worked - my sewing studio is back to my happy place and has been for the several years since. I hope you continue to get better!

As someone who had dealt with chronic fatigue for 25 years now, it is heartbreaking to see so many have to deal with long COVID. I hope you are getting informed care and are patient with yourself. Just having health insurance is a good thing. Will be happy to see you here when you can! P.S. "Take all the classes I've already paid for." That sounds sooo familiar! 😄

OH! There is this building in Kyoto that does all of the costuming for period dramas. They have this showroom, called the Costume Museum, with a very intricate display on scenes from the Tale of Genji. It takes them MONTHS to get the display set up, so you have to plan around their exhibition schedule. I went one time last year, and then again this week when the showroom opened up again with a Springtime display. There are dolls accurately dressed for the period, and furniture, and hangings, all these things to tell you about aristocratic life in the Heian Period. They tell you about the fabrics used, how the fabrics were made and dyed, and a few life-sized examples. There was a display this time about the different colors men wore to display their rank at court. It was my first time to see all the ranks and fabric.

Hey I'm planning on going to Japan in 2025 (fingers crossed), and I very much want to go to the Kyoto Costume Institute, how do I keep up to date with their exhibition schedule? Is it just a matter of keeping an eye on their website, or do they have a newsletter or something? (I also follow them on Instagram)

As someone who has a chronic illness, I can understand giving yourself the leeway for the days you feel good enough to work on a project and know when you just don't have the energy to do anything but take care of yourself. I'm glad you will not get rid of the channel, but also that you are learning your limitations right now. Best wishes on getting better. 😊

I have long Covid, too. I've found that the first couple of weeks of the semester are rough, and then it evens out. I spend a lot of time sitting while lecturing which helps. Listen to your body. Generally, I spend from 8 pm on just sitting in my comfy chair, resting. Sometimes it's more of a nap. Eventually you'll find a system that works for you.
And don't worry about how often you post. You put out content, we'll watch it! Hugs!

@@Costuming_Drama@Costuming_Drama I'm lucky that it's not too bad. I have a friend who can barely walk for more than a few minutes before he has to sit and rest for half an hour or more. I'm counting my blessings that I'm lucky enough to have a very mild case. It's still annoying, though! We can do this!

I liked Fool Me Once on Netflix. I started a 2024 temperature quilt, spending all of December gathering a rainbow of 24 fabrics, and I hand stitch them in English paper piecing hexagons. Minnesota has been so warm that I have very few cobalts and periwinkles and way too many mustards and chartreuse - - my 2 most detested colors. I hope the oranges and peaches of spring will make me like it more. Sending you loads of healing wishes… 🤗❤️‍🩹

Glad to see you are getting better. Good luck with the new job! It literally took me 10 months to get over the side issues of Covid for the most part. The fatigue just added to what I already had so that and the throat/lung damage got to a standing point, meaning no worse or better well after a year. My voice never recovered. Whatever you decide to do is up to you & the rest of us will be here to see what you're up too.

I really, REALLY feel for you. Despite my P-100 filter mask, my gloves, the constant hand-washing, and back in 2020 the damn Tyvex suits...😩😩😩... I got Covid 3 times. And I'm asthmatic. Let me just say it is sometimes all I can do not to want to travel to China, (and EVERY country that is testing germ warfare-looking at YOU U.S.A.), and systematically do something I can't say here on RUclips. I mean I'm THAT angry, and it takes effort to push past that sometimes.
Now, when I get sick, which is every 5th week, my lungs IMMEDIATELY become inflamed and for the first time in my life, I get serious, (nearly hospital worthy), bronchitis. I have lost so much work the only reason I haven't been fired is because I'm only a part-timer, (who does 48 hours a week, lol). I am getting NOTHING done, the house is a disaster, so much for my raised garden beds, my hobbies...grocery shopping. I'm just sick and exhausted. I have ONE week in between illnesses where I feel good.
So, I COMPLETELY understand!! And, again, I really, REALLY feel for you.
Nicole, you do whatever you can to keep happiness and a sense of accomplishment in your life and DO NOT WORRY.... PLEASE.... about our take on it. Covid is life-changing for so many people, and yet I'm willing to be every single one of those people DOESN'T want their life to change. Resentment can build, and a sense of disappointment in oneself. As pat as it sounds, accept the new normal, hope it doesn't last, but rearrange you life so that you don't see all the things you aren't getting done and only see the things you are. Otherwise, you might wind up like me, using precious mental and emotional energy NOT getting angry with your life. You are too happy and outgoing a person for that!
    Love ya, woman!!

Sorry for the weird one word text! My keyboard is being awful.
I am so happy to see you and hear how you are doing. I have so much empathy for you ❤ I have had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, diagnosed by 4 doctor's and a psychiatrist, because I was in serious denial! As a Psychologist you would think I would have been better equipped to handle it. Nope, its an awful disease to deal with. The depression that can come to join the party, along with exhaustion, pain, brain fog... Plus, the content voices from well meaning or ignorant people is hard, and the ones who say to just get over it, it's in your head... Ugh
I am very hopeful that because of "long covid" more advancement in treatment will be coming. Prior to long covid, CFS was ( fir the most part) a woman's disease, and often ignored, or mis diagnosed. Okay, this is starting to sound like a rant. Really I just wish you well, and I truly do understand. I am grateful you talk about it.
I would watch any of the crafty thing's you make! Embroidery, knitting, box making ( that was fun😊) and sew on. It's your personality and intelligence and talents that have me constantly tuning in.
Congratulations 🎉 I am happy you have a job you like and health insurance!
I am going to read the comments to see if someone has a good movie or TV series recommendation. I can't find anything worth watching lately. I am reading a great book ( so far) It is called Noon at Tiffany's. It is based on real life. It highlights the woman who actually created Tiffany Lamps. Based on her letter's that were found. The letters were written between herself, sister's and mother.
Wishing you happiness and improvement in your health.
    With hope,
    Audri

As a person who experiences chronic fatigue (not long covid related)--I get it. It's all you can do to get out of bed some days. Sending you all the good vibes for continued recovery. Also sending you lots of permission to just sit up in bed and watch sewing videos like I do on many occasions. And also I found myself not going in my sewing room at all, so I moved all my sewing essentials to my bedroom. It's right there now...as is my bed. If I need to lie down, I do. I'm sewing much more.

Hiya. I have long covid. It's been 14 months. By the 8th and 9th months, I was a lot better. I got covid again in month 10 and it got worse, but it's getting better again.
It's definitely possible to get better.
I've spoken to a lot of people with long covid, and loads say they improve or get entirely better.
The consultant think I have an autonomic issue, POTS, specifically. My heartrate spikes when I stand up and is generally running fast. I get dizzy when I stand up, get out of breathe easily, I'm fatigued, have poorer coordination, migranes, brainfog and memory problems.
The consultant said not pushing it and having a relaxed body and mind is what will get me better. Ie training my body to not overreact to everything. So trying to take it gently enough that I don't get out of breath, or push up my heartrate unnecessarily. Which is helped by not standing still, not keeping your arms above your head, avoiding stress, doing things that make me happy. And I should try to avoid catching viruses.
Not everyone has this disautonomia, it is one of the things long covid can be. It's all quite new to doctors.
I'm saying this because I wish I could hear more of different people's long covid experiences to feel less alone, hence sharing my experience so others can read mine.
I'm happy to watch any content you post, sewing, organiaing books, knitting chatting whenever ad hoc videos might come out.
Sending lots of love Noelle 💚 congrats on your job! It's great that you like it! And are sort of managing with it. Go you!

One of the most helpful "hints" I have ever received is the use of a timer. I have one that is preset, so I just choose 5, 15, 30 {etc) minutes in a single step. I use this for decluttering (especially my sewing room) and , because of it, I make a lot of progress. Like you, I have the option to do more if I feel like it. Specifically knitting. I can lose hours sitting and knitting and, while I accomplish a lot, I don't do my back or knees any favors. Again, the timer is my friend! I hope it is for you also. SELF CARE!

    • @Costuming_Drama
      @Costuming_Drama  7 месяцев назад +1

i use the timer on my phone all the time for this same reason! I call them "sprints" and try and not do anything but that thing for however long, but then when it is over, it's time to get up and move around.

Regarding pants,Tricia from Tricia's Creative Costume Academy had a "how to fit pants" thing that I'm hoping to be able to use this year, I too have no hips and my pants fall down. I discovered that waistline for pants or skirts =/= waistline for dresses for me and my measurements, my "natural" waistline is 2" higher and needs an inch or two of ease, and my waist where pants actually go needs -2" ease or they fall off my hips. ...which turns out to be the same measrement, but with 2" shorter rise.
That said, this year I'm doing my version of Secret Pants but mine are based on a hakama pattern I've made several times for martial arts, for the prototype/wearable mockup I'm taking the bulk of one hakama that got a bit trashed with use, shortening it to remove the damaged bit at the top and then making pockets in the side vents. I escape the whole "what size is your waist, anyway" because these tie on.... am considering the next version I make being similar to the coquelicot skirt but the front fastens first so I can drop a bum flap to use a toilet instead of having to completely undress like I do with a regular hakama over gi pants.
Glad things seem to be improving for you, congrats on the job (and insurance).

Sorry to hear that COVID is still kicking your butt. Uncertain as to how much natural light you are exposed to. Living up North, full spectrum sun lights are crucial for survival in the winter. I wish you all the best in your job and sewing.
I finally cut the fabric for the gauchos! Now working on making all the marks and the prep stuff before sewing. I'm not too happy with the front pockets, so I considering making welt pockets rather the scoop patch pockets. I also been thinking to add welt pockets to the back.
My feline boss lady Sabrina is impatient for me to get to working on my sewing. When I'm pinning the patterns she uses her paw to point out where to pin next. She sits perched on top of the serger as I sew on the conventional machine and then hops onto the conventional as I sew on the serger.
It only took forever to finish the black jeans made from the Coe trouser patterns. I'm glad that I cut it the way that I did because the wearing ease in the seat was non-existent. Odd because I have a rectangular figure and my non-existent butt is the hardest to fit. I deviated from a fly front and made it button fly instead.

Good to see you back. I remembered that you had had Covid, but I didn't realize that it had become Long Covid. I'm sorry you did, and I'm glad to hear that you've been slowly getting better. I am very slowly getting my sewing area cleaned up and more organize. It didn't help that I acquired a whole bunch of beads and beading supplies from a friend. Her older sister loved to make beaded jewelry. Unfortunately, she was also a hoarder. At the end of August she fell and couldn't get back up. She ended up in the hospital where she died on Sep 1st. So my friend, along with around a dozen friends and family members when to her apartment to clean it out. As a result I inherited about a quarter of the bead hoard. So it has taken over my sewing area. I tried cataloging it, but there is just so much. But it has to be done or I'm gonna go nuts. Oh, and it doesn't help that my sewing area is our living room. We have a 4 bedroom apartment and I couldn't use one of the other rooms because they're all being used as bedrooms or my best friend's workroom or a TV room. My best friend's husband is a couch potato who is gradually going deaf. So the TV is always on and at full volume. The TV room is now on the other side of the house where the rest of us can't hear it. Ya know, I am always a tiny bit envious of folks who have an actual room for sewing... with a door... that they can close. I had one once. ( le sigh) It was wonderful.

Congratulations on the job and health insurance! I have also been leaning into the taking care of myself vibe and doing more relaxing. I have been crocheting a blanket, which seems to give my brain the i did something productive feeling even when I am relaxing watching movies, just trying to take care of myself. I am in the opposite as you are with balancing job life stuff where I was recently laid off and now trying to figure out what my days and time look like for now while I am in this stage of things. I have also been working on learning pattern drafting, and my big sewing goal for the year is making tops that fit well, are flattering, and I enjoy wearing.

After loosing one of our sons in '22 I have found it too difficult to just go up stairs to my craft room! So mostly I have been knitting, love doing socks on double point needles, also have patterns and kits I haven't been able to face starting, but have one shawl 3/4 done and a shrug I'd intended to do for Christmas almost done too. So would love to see your blanket This year I intend to get more sewing done, should not be difficult!

Hi Noel, great to see you again. Reasonable goals, I should catalog my books, but it gives me the shudders thinking about it. I'm afraid my ocd will take over and I'll then catalogue everything else, dvds, cds, my husband's vinyl, you know. I've got no sewing space at the moment, because we are remodelling that part of the house, so I'm writing instead. I would love to do pants, but I've thrown quilts in my path instead. I still want to make that 1882 late natural form outfit from my novel, but I'm not giving myself any sort of deadline on that. Reading? My own novel for the umpteenth time while rewriting/editing. Watching? All the things my kids thought were bad, like Halo, Whatsis Moon, and actually enjoying them. Also reruns of Friday Night Dinner, which is a must see.

Sorry to hear that you still ha e long-covid. Some of the symptoms of it (extreme fatigue, brain fog, etc) are symptoms of an illness I've had for 20 years. So I totally understand the impatience of wanting to do something, but just not having the energy. So I really do hope you recover soon.

Dear Noelle, I've been wondering how you are going, & hoping that you are coping with the essentials in life, & not worrying about the extras you may not be able to get to.
I have fibromyalgia, & am trying to reapply for residency in Czechia, where I've lived for the past few years. Yesterday, the MoI turned down my request for extra time to get my documents in order. It feels like every bit of my energy goes straight into bureacracy. Kafka was right, it's endless.
On a happier note, I have some Netflix recommendations: 3 Body Problem (8 part scifi series), Suzume (anime film), & Nyad (docudrama with Annette Bening & Jodie Foster).
    Best wishes from Brno

Glad to see you again! A job at Apple sounds exciting and needing health insurance is unfortunately a good reason to get a job. Looking forward to more of your videos, especially if they have knitting.
I’ve had a rough holiday season. My mom passed away right at the end of the year. I’m relieved that I don’t have to worry about her declining health anymore. To keep going I’ve made myself get more active and social by taking Lindy hop classes. I dance 3 times a week and that’s been great. I would love to see Dandy Wellington again and actually know how to dance this time.
Not really much sewing being done here. I made some vintage outfits with Mickey fabric for an upcoming Disney cruise we’re taking the kids on next month. I listen to Morbid podcast for some true crime stories while working on stuff.

Whatever you do with your channel will be just fine; its like a crafty lucky dip! Its interesting that I was discussing change with my sister on the weekend, as she struggles to know what to do, as her current hobby no longer holds her attention. Its fine to pivot, and change your focus, but remember that while some skills transfer, for others you will go back to being a rank newbie, and so will ..... well ... you might suck at it for a while. Thats ok, because you know that you already have perfected all these great skills and knowledge, so it will happen for the new stuff too. Just keep plodding along at the speed you body will let you, and you will get there.

If you can think and learn - specially the learning I think you have a good chance to recover. One tip: physical exercise that you like - your body needs to be strong to be able to have the energy to get back to your old level.
