  • Hello Friends! This week we are making a cute Boho Hobo Bag and then experimenting with fabric dye for the first time. I found a great creator who has awesome patterns for free (linked below), so i followed her instructions to create a very useful bag. I had fun learning to dye fabric by myself and even threw in a couple bandanas to try doing some different things with the dye. I hope you enjoy coming on this adventure with me!

Noelle, I appreciate your philosophy. A lot of RUclipsrs put so much pressure on themselves to crank out videos at the cost of their mental health and relationship with whatever craft they're passionate about. I understand for many they rely on the income, but what a breath of fresh air to hear your honesty and compassion for yourself. I appreciate you!

And they don't dare to split up prodjects in several videos and maybe have small things in between the main prodject they make sure they have more time for so they acculy get the resoults they want and going to use. Way to many times I seen them crank out things in a few days and it never seems like they ever use it becouse they don't like the resoults becouse it's not finished nice enoth

Two ideas/suggestions here: check out The Closet Historian's take on ice dyes and also if you like silk and can get 100% pure silk yardage or big already roll hemmed squares you can use water based silk paint, vinegar and a microwave to tiedye it with stunning results. Fast, easy and after standard cleaning you can use the (glas) container for food again no problem.

Seconding Closet Historian's recent dyeing videos - she started off with cotton tshirts from memory. Also you won't get a hard fuchsia (cool colour) with a cream (warm colour) base fabric. It will throw all your colours off slightly. I seem to remember someone using a product that takes any colour out of the base fabric before dyeing which might be worth looking into? That may have been Bella Mae. She was doing the dip method for her ombre. For the strap - I would just fold a little half pleat and stitch straight acron you current seamline. Will give a nice detail at the shoulder too! Happy to watch you sewing anything but how about going back to a TnT? You enjoyed sewing your flutter cross over blouses and your kaftan? Both could also be fun tie dye experiments!

I am getting back into sewing after almost 40 years of not sewing... I have found I get discouraged easily! Trying to make tote bags. I added a divider panel to a simple tote bag - only to discover I attached it outside the bag, rather than inside the bag, so I had to seam rip... And it took two weeks to want to tackle that job... I eventually did finish the bag.
I have discovered I love playing with fabric colors and planning quilts more than the actual sewing - so I give myself permission to just play! And I jump around from project to project as the mood or whim strikes.

Yay! Dyeing is my favorite thing EVER, I'm so happy you've finally taken the plunge! (😆) Ombre's hard, you did good for not really dyeing before!
As long as you're using Rit or another all-purpose, it'll fade. They're not washfast. 🤷‍♀️ When you're ready, fiber reactive is colorfast, and gets you intense colors. I use it inside all the time. The dyebath deteroriates as time goes on and it gets "spent," so it won't stain when you dump it. Bleach bathroom cleaner will take stains if you drip, too, on everything that's not cellulosic. Rit's a little riskier, because it has a lot of types of dyes in it, you have much larger chance of stains. You'd have to be suuuuuper careful.

I’m so glad you learned a lot on your first experience using dyes. Back in the 90’s we were doing tie dye with children and I learned about procion dyes. The mixed color is stable enough to keep awhile and is easy to apply in a squeeze bottle. I still wear my old t-shirt for a pj top and it’s still bright! The place I know to get them is Dharma Trading and you will get the vibrant colors you love. Also, you basically have a single bucket with soda ash solution and your applicator bottles for far less water and mess. You let the dye set for a day and then rinse in their soap and enjoy years of cheery colors.
Always great to have a visit with you!

  • @lenabreijer1311

I took a dye technology course back in the 80s. The colour you get depends on the amount of dye, water and fabric. To get a more intense colour you need more dye and less water. Also each item you put in the dye will exhaust the dye for the next piece you dye so the intensity of each piece depends on the order the go into the bath. When we dyed pieces we worked with the weight of the fabric to be dyed to calculate the exact amount of dye and water to be used.
The amount of staining in the room depends on the exuberance of your movements.
I am currently knitting a hat. My studio is ready for use but there is lots of things still to be done in the new house. It is amazing how much time and energy is required to hang pictures. Decisions are exhausting.

Hats off to you - I've only ever re-dyed my jeans black using Dylon in the washing machine. That worked really well however I'd never dream of doing more than one colour. I think the bag is really pretty and, bright side, if you do decide you want to change it, you know you can just re-dye it again! Also, just to say I loved this different type of sewing video. Its just another spoke on your wheel. We've had historical sewing, museum tours, organisation/destash, bed chats. Love them all. Do whatever you feel in the mood for, no pressure on forcing yourself to do something you just can't face until you're ready.

Just finished a commission of Regency Short Stays for a friend and sent it off. Now I'm back to my attire for the PEER's picnic. I tried everything on yesterday and (posted on Insta if you want to see it) it fits!! (Woohoo no alterations.) I still have to hem my skirt, put sleeves, collar and snaps on my shirtwaist. Make my friend's shirtwaist and Eton jacket. I also need to finish my hat and make a ripple jacket too... but the jacket is a stretch goal. Reading still working through contemporary romance books. I'm also working on a set of embroidered pillowcases for my nieces birthday in a few days and knitting a summer blouse for myself (its taking a long time).

That said, don't splash all over (although I have had issues and done it) and you shouldn't have a singe issue cleaning up. Enjoy the new process!!

I’ve used Rit and Dharma Trading Co Fiber reactive dye and prefer Dharma’s dye. I’ve done both single colors and tried my hand at ice dyeing (which turned out fabulous). If you get a chance to go to their store it makes for a really fun trip! Just be prepared to walk away with an armful of dye, a silk scarf, some soda ash, and a lighter wallet. :) As I’m typing this I’m stirring a big pot of dye with a yard of cotton velvet and a medieval linen hood in it. I’m looking forward to seeing how the cotton and linen take the color differently.

I lost my sew-jo too! three concurrent projects all hit a stumbling block... well not actually a stumbling block more of a I-don't-wanna block :D Bodice sloper that I have to recut and trace and fiddle with and a dress that I have to adjust the fit on after making a top version of it (both involve having a bra on and taking clothes on and off and just UGH) I also have a wrap skirt that the test run was WAY too big. Yesterday I finally forced myself to figure out why. Turns out I didn't actually cut all the fabric to the pattern and left about 3" of "extra" on the the front straight edges. So figured THAT out and today I watched you while I seam ripped. Whoohoo!!!

I just realized that bag is similar to another bag I just sewed using a pattern I got at a thrift store. I made it wider to hold a plastic box. The handle became to wide - I made a leather grip - 5" long and wide enough to go around the handle - sewed velcro to the leather so the leather grip wraps around the tote bag handle and the velcro attaches to itself. Also consider ties instead of the magnetic snaps. I cut the selvage off the lining fabric - 1.25" or so... Sewed a tube and turned it, cut it in half, sewed the tube halves into the seam as I sewed the handle seams.

bought a cheap stock pot (colloquially known as the 'baby cooker' in our household) and it serves quite well for the stovetop method, much easier to keep a consistent temperature. The older smaller pot we used to use does double duty as a transfer vessel for soggy projects so i can get it to the sink for rinsing without dripping all over the place- do put something down to protect the counters.

Idk what sort of quick projects would work for you, but, bags for friends sounds like a great idea.
    My condolences on the "orangey"/coralesque🙄
All the (useful) suggestions I could think of seemed to be well addressed in the comments. Especially, don't let any splashes set (setting fuses rhe color). If there's a surprise/ accident/oversight, try applying some of the rit brand color remover directly, like with a q tip, tiny brush, makeup sponge, dropper... anything precise & let it sit awhile (anywhere porus). Its especially designed to work with dye, so, it may work better than bleach.
I would suggest taping heavy plastic over the places you think you will be dying. But, the adhesive of the tape itself may be problematic to remove.

Pinch the center of the strap along the seam where you joined the two ends and stitch it. Either that or wrap a scrap around the strap at the join to pinch it together so it won't cause irritation on your shoulder.

As someone who is also new to dying, I'd suggest getting on the fiber reactive dye bandwagon; you will get MUCH better results than with Rit. The colors are much more concentrated, and it's honestly not difficult. Dharma Trading has all the supplies, and a BUUUUUNCH of tutorials. The first time I did it, it took me 6 months to get up the courage, and then it took me all of 20 minutes to dye my projects. I suspect you'd be just fine!

  • @Angela-hn6mb

I mostly dye yarn, fiber reactive dyes for cotton and acid dyes for wool. You can do it inside, just make sure everything you use is dedicated for dyeing. A cheap shower curtain makes a good surface to protect counters while you're working and as long as you clean up spills immediately nothing is usually ruined. A cleaner with bleach (if your surfaces are okay with that) is really great for the cleanup.

Clean your iron after that. I'm not sure, but I think the color change you saw could mean it is reactive enough to transfer to other things like the iron with the heat. And after that to transfer from the iron to your next project.
I find dyeing fabric tiring regardless. It's full-on, old school laundry. So I'm sure you build up muscle and endurance if you do it frequently, but otherwise it's work we just aren't practiced at anymore. A long stirring stick is nice when you are submerging. Long = more leverage. But it still needs to be smooth to not catch on fabric. A big canning pot can be nice too. I want to try a beer making kettle for outside lol.
For ombre, there's a video where they add a little more dye at a time with different heights to hang and they soak it lower each time. Little less of an arm workout, but still lots of dipping. I'm thinking I'll try this over the stove with one of those vertical hanger holders on a stand to get different heights. ruclips.net/video/gFChB5KdMkE/видео.html
I'm thinking of trying Jacquard dyes next for possibly more vibrant results. Yeah RIT can be disappointing in saturation. It's often several shades duller & lighter when it dries.

I was working on my most recent bag, and decided I wanted a wider box bottom - so instead of two inch squares, I did three inch squares - forgetting that when you add the seams, you get a seven inch edge once you add the seam!

I dyed 3m of super thick fuzzy boiled wool in a rubbermaid tote in my kitchen.... thankfully, linoleum is easy to bleach if incidents happen but they didn't. First Rit dye project I did was a shirt, and I used a stock pot on my stove, worked OK but even though I used the fixative, it's not very UV stable, the inside of it's still pretty vibrant but the outside is badly faded. Prpobably going to pop it in the next dye bath I wind up doing that's a similar colour.
I get losing yoru sewjo, that's some of the stuff that's in my UFO pile. We just need some time apart to think about what we've done to each other. I needed a break from... whatever it was I thought I should be working on, and instead decided to make a stays mockup. You may be partially to blame for this.
Oooh, bandanas made of linen? I must try this now when next I have spare linen. Good excuse to see if I can use any of the rolled hem feet extensions that came with my hand crank sewing machine. And then I can tie dye them. Woo!

Maybe look into wax resist dyeing or using bleach to remove areas of dye? Wax resist doesn't work on wool because you need high temperatures, but it should work well on linen and cotton, and I've used bleach to paint patterns on dyed fabric with great results (you can then also overdye it to play around with colours more). You might enjoy it because it's less back and forth with buckets, you can just chuck the fabric in and let it take the dye, all the detail work is before hand (with wax) or afterwards (with bleach). I've had good results with Dylon in the washing machine for base colours as well, even mixed colours to get the tone I needed. Never had an issue with the next load of laundry (although I've always the instructions of doing an empty wash in-between).

RIT is flat and faded. You will have to try fiber reactive (procion) dyes. You can buy smaller quantities or get them on sale. Just get one deep purple and you’ll never go back. 😂 Find one that breaks/separates as you dye and you can achieve multi color in one guy. It kinda addictive. 🌈🌈🦋🦋

I may have missed this in other videos, but what dimensions do you make your bandanas? The generic "off-the-shelf" ones are always too small for my head so I was going to see if I had some decent sized scraps to make my own.
Thanks for another great video! I definitely understand being in a "sewing funk". I finished a commission for a friend and I need to work on my reversible corset / bodice thing for Renn Faire in 5 weeks. I have the mockup cut and pinned. My experience with Rit dye has led me to believe that it is a garbage product and the colours they promise are a lie. Having small, low consequence projects to have fun with is a great way to relieve the stress of big projects and bring back the sewjo. I just bought a house yesterday! We are downsizing and I'm super excited to be debt free as soon as all the electronic money gets moved around. And then there will be painting and decorating and so much cleaning and packing! Ok, full disclosure. I've never had anything but bad experiences with Coats and Clarke thread. Easy breaking, thread tangles tension issues, etc. I'd have dyed the fabric, then sewed with better thread. Also, since you often go places like costume college with your sewing, I'd suggest looking up Natalie Quiltessa, she has kits for the absolute most awesome, beautiful carry all bags like you wouldn't believe!

I've lost my "sew-jo" as you call it since march =,= I've done tiny modification/correction/mending to premade items but no sew from scratch stuff.
edit: I did a natural dye recently using soda ash to scour, the aluminum acetate and oak gals for mordanting linen fabric, then dyed with wood and leaves I'd collected over the years. The mordant phase makes a big difference (in the linen at least) in how much color it will hold.
