  • Can I find the elusive Yugo and Montego Estate? I also find some other gems, including a Volkswagen Golf Cross Country, the oldest roadworthy Morris Minor van in the UK. Lots of amazing autojumble too, and we sold some!
    HubNut merchandise available at hubnut.org
Huge thanks to ‪@UPnDOWN‬ for his help over the weekend. It was great to see Hilda on the road!

Thanks for the video. I grew up in Tring Hertfordshire before moving to Wales. The Moss family had a farm called White cloud there and it's widely known in Tring town Pat Moss use to drive round like a lunatic speeding like she did in the rally cars. There was actually a Fulvia being restored near you in the garage behind the petrol station on the cross roads in Penparc/Cardigan that Cyril Morgan and his wife owned. It was a brown car Cyril died around 2001/02 ish, I know his wife was still there in 2004 when I last visited from Canada. My guess is he never finished the car, as it was still far from being done when he used some of our workshop equipment while doing it in 99/ 2000. As I was interested he'd show me the progress when I called in for fuel, and being early days of not everybody having internet, i'd search for parts for him sometimes. If his son doesn't still have it, it's out there some where. I'd love to know and see a picture of it if it's finished. Take care .

Great report. I'm sure there are parts on sale at Beaulieu that were bought for a project, turned out to be the wrong part or not needed. Sat in someone's garage for a few years, then went back to Beaulieu. Got sold to someone else, sat in their garage for a few years.... and repeat....and repeat....until the end of time.

Year 2 1991 VW Golf Country Syncro. Sent to Graz as a Golf Syncro CL and then built up at Magna Steyr for VW. Built for 2 years. All were LHD. An old friend in Derbyshire brought a few into the UK and converted to RHD and some fitted with a TDI engine. I flew to Munich in 2002 and drove a black Year 2 car back to Wigan. The development team behind them were given silver versions to GTI spec!

I've a soft spot for Singer Gazelle's, we had a 2 tone green one in 1976 when I was 6 yrs old, at that age I thought it was a luxury car! We only had it a short while, a drunk in a Marina hit it when it was parked up and it was replaced with a Hillman Minx, don't remember much about that, I must have thought it was bland in comparison haha!

My dad’s first car in 1967 when I was 4 (he came late to 4-wheeled transport in his 40s having owned and ridden motorbikes, motorbike/sidecar combos and motor scooters) was a Series 2 Morris Minor with trafficators that he drove for 3 years. Later, from 1975 to 1977/78, he owned a 1967/68 Morris Minor 1000 - love the sound and interior of the Minor, would love to drive one someday. Nice that you gave the Ital, Montego and Allegro your attention. The 1964/1965 Triumph Herald and the A35 saloon and van versions were lovely to see too, as were the Ford Thames and Leyland-badged J4 vans, but then there were so many lovely vehicles to see there. Thanks Ian for a great tour video of the event. 🙂

The straight 6 civilian Land Rover FWC was not a large seller. It caught the attention of the MOD, who in conjunction with Land Rover developed the V8 FWC artillery tractor and the ambulance versions. A PTO driven ammunition trailer was also developed. Had one of those for my camping gear, towed behind my PTO equipped ex MOD LR LWB station wagon, an ex communication vehicle with 24v electrics, the space for the 96v radio batteries was where the rear side bench seats would have been. Charged by the 24v alternator via a transformer.

Another top video Ian. Lot's of cars that I think we all took for granted back in the day. Unfortunately most have gone now, those that have survived tend to be the 'special' ones with poverty spec cars long gone. Such a shame really as these were often the bread and butter cars for many. The car for me was the Hillman (or was it Chrysler by then) Avenger Tiger with a close second of the Capri Laser. A shame you didn't track down the Yugo but at least the Montego was discovered. Many thanks for sharing.

Great video...I have a custom Morris 1000 pickup, but also had an RS body kit fitted Scorpio back in the day, with 7 spoke RS alloys,...The head gasket was on it's way out, so sold it for £450! I also had a Mrk 2 Charger kit car...The earlier ones were called the Challenger, which looked slightly different...The only drawback I had with my Charger, was hitting my head on the door getting in and out, and at being 5' 8" tall, that was a rarity to ever happen, where i would hit my head on any door top. :D

Whenever you're looking at an "odd" Land Rover, the first thing to do is look and see if it's sat on leafs or coils.
Couldn't see the springs in your footage but, based purely on the Defender rear crossmember, my guess would be that somebody's got hold of an old 300tdi Defender, taken the body off it, fitted the 110FC cab onto it and (perfectly correctly) kept the registration that goes with the 300tdi chassis.
There's a very nice "Series 2" appearing at shows that's sat on coils and has a 1950's registration.
That means the owner has either modified the S2 chassis to fit coils OR he's fitted a Defender 90 chassis... and, in either case, that's actually a bit naughty.
On a similar note, there is/was a company buying up old Range Rovers, taking the shells off and dropping them onto modified Discovery 4 chassis', leaving them registered as 1970s RRs and selling them (for £150k and up) as "tax-free resto-mod classics".
If they were sat on an UN-modified D4 chassis they should be registered as rebodied D4s or, with a modified chassis, they should either be on a Q plate or on a brand new plate if they've been built with new parts and type approved.
An interest in kitcars AND Land Rovers has taken me a long way down the registration rabbit-hole. 🤕

I'll just put my pedant hat on at a jaunty angle and point out the Minor van is the oldest post-war van in the UK. There are still quite a few surviving pre-war (1929-1940) Morris 5cwt Minor vans around I've been a passenger in a 1938 GPO Engineer's van at one of the Pre-War (Morris) Minor Network's Summer Weekend Tours. I like smells. I go to these meets because I like the smell of oil, petrol and diesel. My favourite smell is a well used public lavatory. I like the smell of some factories, bus seats, greenhouse interiors and car tyre depots. I walk around inhaling. If I see something that I believe will have a curious smell I spend quite some time with it. I got into a scuffle with one seller at this event. He got angry because I was just sniffing his starter motor for 20 minutes. He told me to sling my hook but I told him it's a free country. He got up and threatened me. My name is Richard. If you have something that smells curious get in touch as I may be interested.
