Here’s an idea from an old seamstress. This is worth a try for any new quilters; see if it works better for you: Place your pins perpendicular to your sewing path with the pin heads hanging off the edge of the fabrics to the right. This accomplishes three things: • Your fabric will be less distorted. • It’s easy to pull out your pins as you go. • if you do sew over a pin your needle is likely to hop over the pin so no damage is dune.
I put my pin in like that too but I place them back a bit with the tip of the pin faceing the seam so that your machine is not going even going to even run over the tip of the pin
We appreciate the fact that you make big quilts! There is nothing more aggravating to find a pattern that you love but it’s only a throw size and you have to figure out how to make it larger. Love your videos. Glad you’re back. 😀
I love you man! I have diligently watched so doggone Bargello videos, and no one has taken to time to explain this like you have. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! 🤗🤗🤗🤗 No one has explained why to switch directions. Who said men don't follow directions? OMG! You stand the entire time you work? 👏👏👏👏 Did I thank you?
Thank You so much. I Love your Channel it’s great because you let us know that quilting is not only functional but it is also an art form and everyone should quilt like they want to. “It is just fabric and thread”😊
Bargello is named after a pattern of needlepoint embroidery found on chairs in a palace in Florence. this gives it its other name - Florentine work. In Florence it is known as Hungarian point, because they think it came from Hungary. it is also known in the UK embroidery world as Hungarian work. it is a pattern picked up by quilters because it is so versatile and makes amazing designs.
If you put your thumb under and your fingers on top of the 2 strips and then rotate your hand 90゚ away from you, you will prevent the bottom layer of fabric from being pulled through faster then the top layer. This is a technique used in the garment sewing industry because they do not use pins. Glad to see you back in the game!
I love the pistol in the back of your machine. 😂 I watched the video of how you got started, and u won my heart. I bawled my eyes out. Men have this thing of quilting is “women’s work”. And how u took it head on to help u get through tough times is a great testimony. God bless you and I can’t wait to watch more videos. New subscriber here 😎🙌. Stay grateful thankful and blessed xoxo
I do a lot of strip piecing with 2-1/2 in strips. I totally understand your frustration about keeping the strips from bowing.. My husband (a Marine) seen how much of a hard time I was having with my strip piecing and purchased me the longest metal ruler the hardware store makes.. I believe it is 46", sorry, I'll have to go look and get back with you..It cost about $10 bucks... However, It's perfect and helped tons. You just butt your strip up to the ruler and Iron.. Also, sew a row, iron with lots of steam using ruler, and make sure all our seams are going in same direction.. --- New to your channel and have fallen in love, (waves hello to your lovely wife), watching all of your fabulous video's. --- Glad to see you quilting again.. Stay strong, and know "We got your back"..
The reason you switch sewing sides is that the feed dogs do pull on the material. The bias of the material will stretch when pulled. Even though the strips are small there is a little give from the bias being pulled.
Looking great. I made my first bargello a few months ago and learned (too late) to shorten the stitch length when sewing long strips together. As you are cutting strips into sections & sewing together, the shorter stitch length helps keep the edges of seams from coming loose.
So glad to have found your station on You Tube. My adventure in quilting just became easier. I'm not experienced in quilting but I soon will be. Thank you for the encouraging videos. When you say "Its just fabric and thread" ; puts me at ease about starting. So many others make it scary and overly complicated to begin quilting . They start with the measuring and the fractions and they soon lose me. I was never good at math. Therefore, I've been apprehensive in even starting. but with you no more. Thanks to you.
I lost track of you for a long time, but I am so glad I found you. Good to see your videos again. I had subscribed once but my current status did not indicate that, so I subbed again. You all stay at home and stay safe and well. Love from Memphis.
I am sooo enjoying your video’s...i was on your sister’s live video today and said that I would share your page, and I did..I sent it to many of my friends, and will do more tomorrow...Hoping you get to 10 K soon...Also you have taught me sooo much and I am sooo excited to get back into quilting again..i;ve mad a couple of one day quilts at a class many years ago, but have always wanted to do more. Thank you very much. I also have some money saved up and found on E-bay a few of the machines like you have..I might be able to get one soon. Thanks soo much for your teaching...smile
Thanks Mark..I've been wanting to make any bargello so I'll be watching u for sure...so good to see you back and yr wife too.best wishes always....be safe and take care
G'day, Regarding strips morphing and twisting. It's due to the feed dogs stretching the fabrics. This is made worse by most fabric cutting the strips across the grain from selvedge to selvedge. The biggest stretch in most woven fabric is on the bias (45 degree), but the second biggest is on the crosswise grain (selvedge to selvedge). The lengthwise grain (parallel to the selvedge, the grain most clothing is sewn on) has almost zero stretch. A simple test you can do is to hold a piece of yardage in your hands or on the table and gently pull it on the bias, then the crosswise grain then the lengthwise grain. If cutting yardage for quilts, it's worth the effort to cut stips and pieces where the longest edge is on the lengthwise grain. Makes the pieces far tamer and less likely to warp. When using triangles in a block, try to make sure that the outside edges of your blocks are on the straight grain (not bias), doing this makes the blocks sit nicer. Another hint is to acquire a metal yard stick (actually 48" is better) and keep it on your ironing surface. You can then butt your strips against it and steam out any warps as you go along. Thank you again for your video. God bless you and your family, now and always.
That’s a great tip just use them right in the order that they are put in the jelly roll. I have color placement issues so that’s a terrific thing for me to know
So glad you’re back. I discovered your channel about the time I started quilting and have appreciated your progress over time. The bargello was actually one I was considering for my next quilting project so I will be following along. Again, glad y’all are back. God bless.
Hello Quilting Marine. Thank you for doing this bargello series. I made a small one years ago and I loved the experience. Thank you for explaining the seam direction, change starting point top/bottom, to keep the quilt from warping. Good to know. I think I did it right only by accident. I will keep this in mind for the future. You've got good tips for construction, sewing, taking your time. Sometimes I rush things because I want instant gratification. You remind me to enjoy the process. I am subscribed and working my way through all your videos. God Bless. Semper Fi. SueB., Randolph, MA
You can use your wall for the strips. lower that quilt bar and put them over it. do sets of 3 strips and number each set and put back up on the bar until you need to sew the sets together. this will also help stop the curving. Glad you are back. Stay safe you two.
I'm new to your channel. I love it. Haven't sewn since school. I might make a quilt this winter. I love that you always include the beginner quilters and explain everything that you do. Many thanks. Best wishes to you and yours from Ireland.
I love your videos and you also do a super job of teaching . We need more men quilting. I'm curious to know if you took lessons at a shop or learned online because you do the one thing I always forget to do, which is press and set the seam before I open the seam. Your American Beauty is a beauty. It's a quilt I've avoided doing because of the curves but I might make one with four blocks just make them for the heck of it. Also your scrap blocks are something that my mind just cannot work around making. But I have a friend who does them exactly like you do. I tend to cut all of my scraps into three four and five inch blocks for scrap quilts but one of these days I'm going to make scrap blocks like you and my friend do. And now I may have to go dig all those little leftover pieces that I threw in the trash back out today. 😅
I am SO glad you’re back!! I’m only half way through your tutorial and you’ve already taught me several things. I now know why my quilt top last night turned out like it did and I’ve been working on it what seems like forever.....it’s now finished. THANKS for all your help

My favorite part of this video is that you carefully did not disturb the sleeping dog, even though it was right under where you were working.
Here’s an idea from an old seamstress. This is worth a try for any new quilters; see if it works better for you:
