I have a tip on seam ripping. Flip your fabric to the inside and on one side of your stitches just cut every 5th stitch. Then on the other side of your stitches, use your seam ripper to lift up your unbroken thread. Once you have enough to grab with your fingers, grab the thread and pull it out. It does not matter if you pull from one end of your stitches or from the middle. This method is quick and easy. Another tip on keeping strips in order is to take a straight pin and start at the one end (the last one you want to sew) and from the back, stick the pin through. Now proceed in order sticking the fabric on the same pin. When you have them all on the pin you can use a clothes pin to keep them together until it’s time to see. Be sure to leave the pin in. This will allow you to lay your bundle of strips near you while you are sewing and still keep them in order. Love the way you describe how to make the cuts in this type of quilt.
An excellent Bargello series tutorial! Thank you for explaining this pattern so well in detail, it was very helpful. I appreciated learning all your tips on this pattern and all your other outstanding videos. Thank you for sharing your time and expertise ❤❤
Thank you for this tutorial. I really like your delivery. Your instructions are matter of fact and straight to the point. It’s very evident that you are military! My family is as well. Blessings to you and your family.
To The Quilting Marine from a Green Beret quilting wife........HOOAH! I love your reminders to everyone that it is only fabric and thread! I also make my quilts only to give away and be used. Once I give it away I don't worry for one second about how or how often its used. Hopefully used until its threadbare and tattered but I don't care. It's excellent therapy for the quilter! I name all of my machines masculine names since my GB is always gone and I need a strong man around. haha I am sew happy I just stumbled upon your videos! God bless.
Love your quilting videos!your calm and explain in simple terms. love your" your sewing machine, your room, your rules" Proud Texan watching. Keep up the great work..
I bought jelly rolls with the intention of making a bargello quilt but I have been so nervous about starting it. You inspired me to give it a try! Love the “ it’s only fabric and it’s only thread”. Thank you not only for the video which is great but Thank you for your service !!!
I find repetitive sewing peaceful too. I love your attitude with patience & ripping seams. As a long time stitching Momma I've done some backward sewing mistakes myself. A seam ripper can seriously be your friend. But gotta say never heard of someone sewing something to they're own shirt, lol loved it. But that didnt stop you from moving forward, awesome!
I forwarded this to my g son who is a marine. I use to teach him how to sew when he was younger. I bought all my g children sewing machines. lol So glad I found you . Your so laid back. tu
First off. Thank YOU for your Service. That means a lot. I have Marine An Army and a Navy kids so I know what you have gone thru!!!!!!! Thank you for being here and showing your quilting. I'm chicken to start a Bargello but think I can do it now. I think I have a jelly roll hidden away too. :) That cracked me up!! I found your cooking videos too.. Great job. The quilt for your mother in law is just beautiful. When you do the one for your whole family I hope you film that for us. I'd love to do it along with you. Keep on keepin on Marine!! WE all are in your corner!! :)
Thank you for your service!!! I totally enjoy your channel. Bless you for your motivation of helping other vets and/or new quilters!!! You both totally rock!!!
Good to see you sewing again. This is one I've wanted to do for a long time so it's on my list of to dos. Right now I have 4 quilts going. Two are waiting on a new walking foot. Yes, I will be quilting them myself on my brother for the first time. Thanks for joining me on my quilting journey.
I just found your channel and I've been binge-watching it today! Don't be offended (I have a house-Marine of my own - Nam era) but you are absolutely adorable, and I love love love your laid-back approach to quilting. I subscribed!
This is great. I can't wait to see the finished quilt. I wanted to share a tip with you. Nearly anytime that you have to sew strip sets and you number the strips, if you keep the even number strip on top when sewing the seam, you will automatically sew each strip in opposite directions and this will help keep you from making a curved strip set. This will work with the first step as well as when you start sewing the last strips together to form the top. I hope this will help someone like it has me. :-)
There is a retired guy here in Australia who makes those seam rippers Anitra and Mark. He is on FB and it’s ‘Allans Pen making’ i think. I will check. He makes lots of different colours. Travels around the country... or did until CoVid19!. The exchange rate will make it cheap for you in USA. I loved your video and explanation especially the direction of sewing. I will check out the others. What is that strange background noise? I loved your colours. What size quilt? I will try a bargello one day. Thankyou from Melbourne. God Bless.
Have a jelly roll that I'm going to give this quilt a try. Thanks Mark for explaining it so well. Have a great Sunday. Stay safe and healthy.💪 The Ridge is rising.
I just recently found you on RUclips. I’m so very happy that I have, you have such a calm voice and love the “ it’s only fabric, it’s only thread” quote!!! Your videos are wonderful!
OMG Mark WOW It was amazing to watch your process to get the strips ready to sew together. I watched intently because it truly was fascinating to see how the quilt strip went together it really is quite the process and to see the gradation of the colors come to being was a WOW!! then when you got all done with the one set of colors I was so intrigued as to "WHAT NOW: and the as you grabbed up the strip that started with the green and placed it where it needed to be to start seam ripping it was an "AHA" moment and yet still so in awe!! You are one heck of a spectacular teacher....you are so precise with your direction and it includes the visual that is like non other and you really, REALLY make sure it understood..and you include very precisely you tips and tricks to make sure it all works out!! I totally get your analogy about you get your "HIGH" from making it then once it leaves it's on it's own and it is an outstanding feeling I know that someone is going to be either surprised or just in awe over what you've created and this is the bestest!!! Thanks for another Awesome video.. YOU SO ROCK!! Joan Smith
I sewed my first strip quilt all in the same direction. Was very wonky. Cut it up into 6in squares and made a quilt top. Was weird but I liked it and didnt have to pick it apart.
Love your sense of humor, We’ve all hid fabric from our spouses! You make this look so easy! I’ve always wanted to make a Bargello and since watching you I may just give it a try!👍
You Absolutely crack me up ... once it leaves me it’s on it own 😂😂😂😂 love it... want the sizes - I’m not that guy 😂😂😂 I love wen quilter don’t take their art too seriously 👊🏼 it’s just fabric ... 😂😂😂 keep them coming 🇬🇧
There's a less stressful way to rip seams...leave them together and pull out the stitch from there instead of pulling apart the fabric. Try it; it's way better and quicker. Have a great day - love your teaching style! I'm ready to try my first bargello!
Raynene, would it depend on the stitch length, or can you still rip a tighter seam that way? I find that sometimes, especially if there’s a lot of bulk, my stitches get tighter, even set at a 2.5 - 3. I’ve only ever learnt to pull the fabric away from its buddy, then rip from the inside of the seam, so I haven’t tried your method.
I love your attitude about quilting! You are an insperation! I would like to do this quilt and I am intimidated, but you have spurred me on, thank you!!!
I’m so happy y’all are ok! Your instructions are so easy to follow. Thank you. I think I will make this for my daughter. That is when I finish the one I’m making for my son.
Oh Mark I am covetous of your seam ripper! Is there a vendor we can approach to purchase one? I wear mine out🤭🤦🏻♀️. I need to keep them sharp and fresh for all of the ripping I do. Sometimes I have to retire “Jack” young. 😔 I love the freedom a bargello quilt pattern gives the Quilter! I think the way you demonstrated it visually was very beneficial. Having a surface big enough to lay out your pattern is a blessing as well. This was a good instructional. 😎 You do you. Quilt as desired.
Tfs! I was kindof scared to make this, it looked like it was hard to do. Especially where I go to get fabric I get ladies that have there pinkies up & they ask what your making. I use to be truthful now I just tell them Im not sure. Otherwise they try to give advice as what to do with my fabric. But I am constantaly trying new things. Even though it sometimes turn out wonky.
Your seam ripper needs sharpening. I brought a new one and I fought out how dull my old one was. There is a UTube on how to sharpen a seam ripper. I haven’t tried it yet, but plan to
Love your energy, wisdom, compassion. Plus the quilt is looking good. Im thinking of using the 'bargello' technique but using strips all the same width so it is just simpler - all 4" squares or such. Seems like a good way to play with color and have a top come together quickly... it would not look as sophisticated as yours but the color play could still be really fun. Wish I could send you a picture of the top Im working on right now. Thanks!
On this part I seen them number them, thing I'll have to do that so I don't get lost. Ok I seen you did. Maybe I don't have patience to make one lol are I should just hold my tongue
Hello, Hello, Happy Sunday and God Bless! Where did you get your map? I have been wanting one like that forever. Like that seam ripper, does your friend sell them? I will order one if he does. You are very brave, I think that kind of quilt looks real scary. Love your videos Thank You for sharing.
I have a jelly roll that I took apart and mixed up all the strips for another project, however I never started the other project. can I use this jelly roll with the strips not in factory order? Should I make sure I have lights and dark mixed up? also can a design be used instead of plain fabric?
You know you’re using your seam ripper upside down AND the wrong way round - yeah? That little ball bit is to pit into the seam so you didn’t cut the other side, then you just side it down.

I figured out that you have to sew different directions the hard way as well. I sewed up an entire king sized top and it was all crazy.

Love the tips! Going to try this. Thank you!

Love the way you explain things and your calming voice and tone. Thanks for making these videos for all of us quilters, new and experienced
That is so super cool! I hope you guys are doing well. Give my love to them for babies keep some for yourselves and know that we love you💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
I sewed my first strip quilt all in the same direction. Was very wonky. Cut it up into 6in squares and made a quilt top. Was weird but I liked it and didnt have to pick it apart.
Omgosh...I have always been scared of that quilt type. You make it so doable 👍🏽 Guess it's time to cowgirl up!tfs

Thanks for this tutorial :D I never made anything with a jelly roll...but this makes me want to try !
Love that term jelly roll. Still makes me laugh, thought it was a jam sandwich! Love from Scotland. X ps colours are devine. X
I just got to see this an it is Beautiful. Keep up the great work. And thank you.
Pretty quilt.
Love it!
I have always wanted to learn how to do a bargello, Thank you!
THANK YOU
If you can do it I can, I have always been intimidated by this type of quilt.
Wow love the red one
You know the little red ball if you turn your seam wrapper over and slide that right across it will take all your stitches off is so much easier

gorgeous thank you new to your channel, and love it
Sounds like a rip sound!😁 I’m not a quilter & I don’t think I could be! Do you crochet like your momma does? Stay safe!🙏🏻
You give me the confidence to try! Please tell me you label your quilts
It is looking good. How did you get into quilting? Maybe you can do a video and let us know.
Are there any more jelly rolls laying around? They seem to be very handy!
On this part I seen them number them, thing I'll have to do that so I don't get lost. Ok I seen you did. Maybe I don't have patience to make one lol are I should just hold my tongue

No go for it how you want its gonna turn out great
Dianne Zeigler your quilt, your rules. Do whatever *you* like. Whatever *you* think looks good.
Made the tube, laid it out so here we go, just stop making me laugh!
You know you’re using your seam ripper upside down AND the wrong way round - yeah? That little ball bit is to pit into the seam so you didn’t cut the other side, then you just side it down.

I Ike the name stitch ripper better
Too much work to rip out the stitching. There must be another/better way to contruct this quilt.
