  • Hello again, it's turned cold here in Wales and I'd really like my very own lap quilt. In this video, I'll show you how I design quilts, estimate fabric requirements, and how to piece it together. Using squares is a great way to practice the basic bargello technique before embarking on a more complicated pattern.
The quilt I'm making is 11 x 5" squares by 13 x 5" squares and will be finished with a 5" border. If you want to use fat quarters you will need 13 for the main design and extra fabric for a border and binding.

Very nice, I appreciate how you speak to all skill levels and explain other methods in case tools are not the same. It's also helpful you had it all graphed out. I can't wait to see the finished quilt !

Just curious: as a dressmaker myself (first), then a quilter (later) - don't you think the seams in a garment have much more stress on them, especially if the garment is at all fitted (plus are washed much more often than a quilt)? I just don't understand the whole "seams pressed open are weaker" philosophy.

Hi Robin, in answer to your question, I think it very much depends on whether or not you intend to use your quilts. We tend to think of quilts lying flat, but sleep under one with a partner or child and you quickly realize that they get pulled and yanked in a way that clothes almost never do. Then if you take into consideration the shear number of seams across even a small quilt there are far more than in any garment. Lastly have you ever washed a quilt? They are heavy when wet and all that weight can literally pull the seams apart. The stress areas of garments such as armholes and waist tend to be double stitched or bound, the only area that is standard to press open is on a paneled skirt which would almost never have two people having a tug of war with it.
