  • Pick and gut of Abloy 330 padlock with Sentry core. Quite a long pick this one (sorry), where I spend about 90% of the time with it nearly picked searching for the last disc to move.

    Wow excellent work 👏 can't believe it I've just bought a load of these padlocks and was looking at videos for it and then I happen to find yours and you're using my pick and tray 😀 awesome 👌 you've done all the hard work for so thanks very much 👍

      Thanks! Your pick us really good btw, I especially like the adjustability of the tension nose which really helps. And that collar, easier to use than handles for me. It's also nice to have a hole in the front that'll take 6mm tube, making custom tensioners without a lathe quite easy. If you ever do a mk2 I could suggest some minor improvements if you're interested.
      I do think it might be a bit easier to pick one of these with rear tension, but harder to make the tooling. Whatever, that design did work! Let me know how you get on, I'm curious.

    15 minutes to get in, and with a LOT of patience! I've not seen a 'Sentry' type opened before, but imagine if it was attached to a shipping container, especially if it was inside the little box unit in the centre of the doors! Excellent job there!!

      Thanks! Well done if you had the patience to actually watch it. Not my finest picking for sure, but for all practical purposes this is a very secure lock. It takes special tools, detailed knowledge of the design and quite a bit of practice. I can't imagine these ever getting picked in use, a bad person would take a grinder to it for sure.

    Very informative video! I just picked up one of these locks, my first disc detainer lock in fact. Wondering now who i would have to make friends with to convince them to make me a pick that could get into it lol

      😆 that's a very tough first DD. I recommend getting some easier DDs picked first and work up to this. Picks wise, Yan at RWB custom picks will do a tensioner for you and supply a pin you can use to make your own tips. Good luck!

      No worries, seems better than those previously available and I wanted to make it so others could copy. A few folk have now with mixed success, easy to break but works fine if gentle. Still a tough pick though!

      Hey, glad you enjoyed! The stock pick is from RWB custom picks, you can find them on Instagram or just email rwbcnc@gmail.com (I should start asking for commission!) You could probably do similar mods to a sparrows DD pick too, bit cheaper.
      Obviously the tips are custom, but they are actually quite easy to make, just takes time, care and some basic tools (vice, files, hacksaw, bench grinder). I bought the elector pins for the tip from AliExpress, the other raw material from eBay. Give it a go, opening a lock like this with a home made tool is a cool feeling!

      Thanks! It did feel pretty tricky to me, as you can see! Frustrating at times but I do enjoy the process of getting a lock like this, understanding it, thinking about different ways of picking it, making the tools, getting used to the feedback and finally getting the open. Easy locks are boring

    Nice work! I think you should try to put some more lights while picking to improve the video quality. Without enough light video cameras generate lots of pixel noise with destroys the image quality during the video compression.

    • @crispix

      Interesting. Thanks for the tip. The fact I'm filming on a cheap phone probably doesn't help either

      @@crispix The cheaper the camera, the more critical it is to get more light. Even the cheapest webcams output pretty good image if the light levels match the direct sunlight outdoors.

  • @MikkoRantalainen

    Could you simply file the tab off the front disk to convert this lock into a rear tensioning one (still working with the original key)? That would make creating suitable pick much harder because there's practically no space for the tensioner arm with pick design shown in this video. At minimum, you would have to cut half of the picking tip away which makes rotating the disks even harder.

    • @crispix
      @crispix  Год назад +2

      Sorry Milko, only just seen this.
      Yes, I think you probably could do this as you describe. The DSS bars interacting with the discs would become the limiting factor on rotation of the front plate. Lock would still work fine I think. Hux has some examples of Sentry with a smaller front tab so it rotates past the gate, which I think would achieve the same outcome.
      A lock like this would definitely be harder to tension. I think a tensioner down the side of the keyway and a centred Y shaped picking tip would be needed, so harder but still possible.
      As an aside, at some point I will make a challenge lock based on a Sentry which will (I hope) be wildly difficult to pick

    • @MikkoRantalainen
      @MikkoRantalainen Год назад

      @@crispix Yeah, if you create tensioner from the original key blank (or a key because blanks are not publicly available) you can obviously correctly tension the lock. However, with a single sided picking tip (Y or S shape for the tip) the tolerances in the lock cause parts to move ever so slightly unpredictable, IMO. That wouldn't prevent picking but it would make it even harder.
      If I've understood correctly, the symmetrical nature of the key works as a self-centering element for the disks which makes the lock behave more accurately even when some free space must exist between all the parts to allow free movement.
