King's Quest V - All Game Overs [Extended Cut]
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 мар 2017
- This video contains all the different ways you can lose in the CD version of King's Quest V. The clips in the Extended Cut also contain various other actions, lines, and narrations that (mostly) pertain to the deaths as well (including many of very helpful Cedric's very helpful warnings).
If you prefer a cleaner cut without all the extra stuff and just want to watch Graham dying a bunch of times in succession, you can instead watch the Condensed Cut here: • King's Quest V - All G...
I made videos similar to this in 2007 and they're still getting a good number of views so they sorely needed an upgrade. Not only is this one now in HD, but it features the MT-32 MIDI module, so the music sounds much better as well.
Dead ends are included in the Extended Cut, but a few cases were excluded because there's nothing to show. Many times a dead end will occur if you leave an item behind and cannot go back to pick it up. Sometimes the game will do something special in response to these cases (e.g. the iron bar), in which case this video will show what happens. But if the game does nothing special for that item (e.g. the golden locket), then it didn't make the video.

The most infamous part of the game is that you can eat the pie and don't know you've made the game unwinnable until much later in the game.
Same as the elf who steals quest items in the cave in kings quest 1 😄
It’s what made games like these great.
@@Demendred "Great" yeah that's what we'll go with. 😆
Stuff like that is why I never got into Sierra adventure games and stuck to Lucasarts.
And yet, compared to activating a power-transfer machine with a piece of moldy cheese from a prison cell that can only be retrieved with a fish hook, it almost seems logical.
"Thanks again for all your help"
"What are you?! A Spy?!"
*Stabs Graham*
*THAT* wasn't a smart move!
that wasn't a very smart move for graham to make
I can't help but feel like Graham's line here might have been a subtle, snide jab at the player just before dying a very stupid death, thanks to the player. XD
“Well, off to visit your mother!”
''Mamma mia! A wooden boy!''
Something is so uncanny about Graham's endless positivity in the face of danger contrasted with the narrator's sadistic enjoyment of his death
Heyyy: the narrator does feel sad when King Graham gets killed by Mordac
@@ultimapower6950 I mean yeah but he's happy to see him get eaten alive by the harpies lol
…Maybe I'd like to watch that too. 👀
"These pies cost 1 silver each."
"That's nice, but can I make my game unwinnable instead?"
"Sure!"
The carefree way the pie vendor goes "Sure!" when offered the wrong item always amuses me. It's like he's an innocent bystander in this exchange, blissfully unaware of the doom the player is placing themselves in. He doesn't care; he's getting a golden heart out of the deal!
Never trust a bad guy, Graham
"GRAHAM! DON'T GET SO CLOSE!"
"Wait wha- AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"
No graham stay away from the edge
2:28 That bear has got the eyes of Mohammad Alì.
And the butt of Bea Arthur.
Uh-oh...that last step was a doozy.
Cedric: "Let's turn back!"
Also Cedric (if you try to turn back): "Ooooooh, I think I'll wait here until you come back."
22:26 Thanks for playing kings quest 5.
Mocking the Player. XD
''Cheer Graham. At least you can practice your game of Tiddly Wink.''
JonTron: Hey f*** you man.
Narrator: Thanks for playing King's Quest V.
Paw: What?! No smarmy answer?! Come on, Mr. Narrator, I- Uh... (Incoherent Babbling) Okay, let's try again.
i think this might have been a placeholder meant to have been replaced with a more appropriate death quip but the devs ran out of time.
i say this because of how much of a non-sequitor it is.
"Excuse me, can we talk?"
(Gets grabbed by yeti)
Yeti: "Sure. Do you want me to start eating your arms or legs first?"
Graham: No Cedric, I'll figure this out.
*proceeds to walk off the edge*
Cedric: No, Graham, don't!
@@jakebarnes8404 Notice how he says "No, Graham, don't!" instead of "Graham, don't get too close!" Does he actually think Graham is committing suicide?
4:44 "A spy! Get him!!!" Oh man, the delivery of the line and the movement of the horses gets me every time.
40:47 "No, I'll figure this out!"
*walks off the cliff and fucking dies*
No, Graham, don't!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLL!
Uh-Oh...That last step was a doozy!
Yeah lol. What an idiot 😂
Man, Graham's screams as he falls will never not make me laugh hysterically, lol.
12:16 Back in the day, I had a bug happen here where Graham never stopped falling. As soon as his scream stopped, it started over again. He just kept screaming as he fell forever.
I remember that
That last second of fall scream @23:42 is hilarious. :D
"Uh oh... That last step was a doozy!"
29:19 That's so mean haha
Thug Life Graham XD
Not just mean..... RUDE
29:37 How could Graham be so uncaring by finishing off the remaining half of the leg of lamb in front of a starving eagle?
No joke.
“HOO, STAY AWAY FROM THOSE BEES.”
*proceeds to go to the swarm of bees, and dies*
bee seeing you
How can bees kill you? Is Graham allergic?
At least he said it before he was about to get stung instead of WHILE he was being stung...
Graham was starring by Nicolas Cage (Wicker Man era)
21:08 He’s so cold his shirt turns blue!
If I die in some kind of accident, I expect a witty epitaph from this game's narrator.
"Stay away, this is my path!"
-Graham fails to stay away, gets bitten-
"That wasn't wise, Graham. He who speaks with forked tongues should never be trusted"
But...
He *warned* you to stay away.
So you actually *should* have trusted him. And stayed away.
well i mean he doesnt legally own the path hes guarding, so he still is lying and thus cant be trusted.
It's also strange that the bear death has the narrator tell you not to feed the bears, when feeding him is actually the right thing to do.
Amazing, uploading this was a very smart move for you to make.
I never knew the snake had dialogue and a character portrait, so this is pretty mindblowing to me - thank you for the enlightenment!
Love the midi module you used for this too, gives a whole new dimension to the music. Given I watched the old set of videos for KQ5 (and KQ6), I'm thrilled to see this updated version.
Thanks again for all your help!
Also wanted to add that if you ever decided to do another playthrough of this to upload, I would love to hear the whole game with this sound system!
Yeah, the snake only has that one line, and it's triggered by the hand command instead of the talk one like you would think. That's why a lot of people don't know about it, and really the only reason I showed it.
And yep, the KQ6 videos need an upgrade too. However, its soundtrack was not composed on the MT-32 so I'll have to figure out something else for that.
I actually have considered making a full walkthrough of the game in this format. I've also thought about making a Let's Play in the format similar to what I'm doing with Space Quest IV right now, but at the moment I don't see how I'd come up with enough material to keep it entertaining and informative enough throughout.
I never knew you could talk to the cat in Mordak's castle. (Not that it's a good idea to do so, as the cat will report your presence to Mordak, causing your inevitable death usually by the next screen.)
5:45 I mean... he's just being polite. Lolololol. xD Which ultimately leads to his downfall. xD
I’ve actually found through playing the game multiple times that, if you're especially unlucky, there’s a random chance of bumping into Mordack in his bedroom or in his laboratory (10% and 30% respectively). In those situations, he just kills you instantly as soon as you enter the room. Worst of all? There is no way to prevent it from happening; you just have to hope the RNG isn't feeling spiteful. It’s pretty frustrating because this can happen even after dealing with both the blue beast and Mannanan. It doesn’t happen if Mannanan shows up in Mordack’s bedroom because the game can’t cause both events to happen at once. Because you only have to enter the bedroom and you have a 90% chance of not dying if you do so, I'm not surprised it isn't well-known.
Also, I find it very strange that the programmers bothered coding a unique death situation in the event you failed to pick up the iron bar by spawning the blue beast outside of Mordack’s castle - especially given that A) you still get a point for getting captured and B) I can’t realistically envision any adventure game player capable of making it through the mountains actively deciding not to pick up the iron bar. I wager that most players didn't know the blue beast is even capable of appearing outside of Mordack's castle until they watched this video.
31:16 OH NO!, THE WATER IS TOO COLD FOR SWIMMING!!!
OH NO THERE'S A HOOOOLE IN THE BOAT
Grahams just going for a swim. the kingdom can save itself. have a nice day
This is great! There's a few I've never seen, such as the blue monster getting you at the grate, because I didn't have the patience to play the game without necessary items. I also never knew you could SEE the hole in the sailboat before getting in! That floored me! The video quality is very good too. Thanks for posting!
daffers234 Y'know, I didn't know about those two either when I made my original reel forever ago. People informed me of them over time as it got more views, so I guess you can credit them for that.
This is great. A lot of these game overs take a lot of effort (or incompetence) to get!
38:41 say hello to David Jones Graham! I love that one!!
Davy Jones. As in, Davy Jones' Locker
That fanfare when the blue alien shows up 😂
It always startled the shit out of me.
26:26 And I'm Hungry Like the Wolf
Would you ever do a full compilation of KQ2015's deaths?
Btw great job on your videos over the years. This is coming from a very late fan of these KQ and other sierra games from 2013. Not counting Half Life I played in the 90s.

"Cedric!"

[Leaves]
I just noticed, the bear punches graham like some sort of cartoon. XD
Also, “grotesque organ”... that’s what SHE said.
"Thanks for playing King's Quest V."
Is that supposed to be an insult?
Indeed it is, but previous KQ games were a lot more mocking for making mistakes. My favorite was always "Sorry you weren't smart enough to beat our game. Maybe you should go read a book or something." It's all in good fun though; these games don't take themselves too seriously.
Troodon which game was that one?
I like how the deaths mock Graham or rather the Player.
XD
I'm amazed nobody caught Cedric's grammatical flub. Snakes aren't POISONOUS, they're VENOMOUS. poisonous would imply they'd have to be eaten, whereby venomous implies using venom to inject into their pray
Great to know.
The narrator correctly calls it a venomous snake
I remember when GameInformer listed 12:47 as #10 in their Top 10 Screw Overs In Gaming.
shadyparadox.
I overlapped two tabs with Graham falling to his death at 28:34 with Javert's suicide in Les Misérables (the original musical). It had a unique way of Graham singing a song about his despair, and his decision to end his life by falling off a cliff when Javert says, "there is no way to go on." The orchestral music is very fitting with an image of the game over screen.
Mashup video when?
@@shadyparadox When I said I used two tabs, I meant two tabs on an internet browser. One showing Graham screaming while falling off a cliff, and the other of person singing. I'm trying to create a video of it so I can share with all. This is a first for me.

i love how the narrator doesnt seem to have a line for this, just that he thanks you for playing kings quest v.
makes me think it was a dummy line that was supposed to be another line but they ran out of time, simply because of how much of a non-sequitor it is.
Love these little compilations of things from the old sierra games. Ever thought about doing one where you trade all items to Rare Curiosities? (KQ7)
Already done! Doesn't have many views... perhaps I'm just not good at the publicizing part?
ruclips.net/video/wOmCO1z89cQ/видео.html
Neat. Thanks mate.
In addition to eating it yourself, you can also give the pie to the eagle. It'll satisfy the eagle's hunger, but you won't be able to get past the yeti.
I was aware of this, I just couldn't see how it would fit. It's actually a yeti death, and showing it would mean playing the same scene twice (except the eaten pixel blob is yellow and the player doesn't get any points). But maybe I should've shown it anyway to be thorough? I dunno.
Thanks for mentioning it here though.
It's essentially the same death you get for not throwing the pie at the yeti in time, or not having the pie at all when you get to the yeti. But yeah, eating the pie yourself or giving the pie away will inevitably cause death to the yeti. Perhaps it should be included in the "bad trades" segment.
That's more of a dead end than a death
53:29 was that just a hidden death scene? Graham was just cut in half by the boat as his upper body floats in the air while his lower body remains on the boat floating away to the sea!
"Watch out, there's a hole in the boat!"
DROWNS.
"Thanks for playing King's Quest V."
Yeah, you deserved that one....
Cedric is an idiot for telling you AFTER it's too late.
Cedric's warnings come AFTER it's too late, most of the time. There's very few times he warns you BEFORE the fact.

I actually had no idea the blue Alien thing could appear outside the castle. I thought he showed up in that one room and that was it. (Of course you have no way to get out because you didn't meet Cassima, unlike meeting the Blue Alien inside).

I'm confused. If those particular trades make the game impossible to win why does the game allow you to do it? Maybe it's because I didn't grow up in that particular era in gaming (only recently started getting interested in Sierra games). It's just weird seeing as it seems eager to kill you quickly for the slightest mistake otherwise. Same for Mannaan alerting Mordack. Is there any particular point to letting the player wander before he kills them?
Thomas Nevitt Yes, the modern unwritten rules for adventure game design such as not allowing dead ends (playable conditions in which winning is impossible) were arrived at because of games like this.
In each scenario, such as those bad trades, disturbing the cat, or many other cases that are also in the video, the game is in a dead end state, which is now highly frowned upon. But we had to learn this by experimentation.
In addition to what shadyparadox posted, King's Quest V was the first KQ game not to use a text parser to form commands. When Sierra announced that KQ5 was going to be fully point-n-click, they got criticism from some fans about "dumbing down" the interface. So, the developers felt they should compensate by cranking up the difficulty of the game's puzzles. At the time, including possible "dead ends"--for which Sierra was particularly notorious--was an accepted form of difficulty in adventure games.
53:25 Does Graham always misalign with the boat like that?!?
I don't recall it happening during my childhood, but I can't get the version I have now to stop doing it.
Oh well, it's hilarious.
Dying for a drink, Graham?
Uh oh, that last step was a doozy.
Man I never knew about the dead end if you paid for the custard pie with the golden heart or the golden heart for the Sled but I knew about alternative solutions to the puzzles because of giving the Golden Needle to the Fortune Teller's guard as an example.
Never pay more than is asked for (or pay with something other than a coin if they ask for a coin) because doing so will make the game unwinnable. It's kind of funny that they even recorded dialogue for when you overpay, hinting that you probably did something wrong.
2:28 That bear has got the eyes of Mohammad Alì.

This game was notorious for punishing you.
Is there a VGA Version with Text?
30:04 LMAO Graham's anime eyes!
Didn't KQ5 (maybe it was 6) have a death where the guy fell like 18 inches and still died?
yes, it was because he hit a rock on the way down
No, Graham, don't!
This is one of the most violent games I have ever seen. The death scenes are downright disturbing and occasionally hilarious.
IKR. It's not gore it's just the fact you get attached to the character then die.
Agreed. Doom, Mortal Kombat, God of War, Gears of War, Dead Space, Resident Evil, Fallout, Scorn, Manhunt, and Postal have nothing on this game!
well, the king is one terrible swimmer...
Can't you leave the organ room before Mordack shows up or are you screwed after that?

_Dumm daa daa daa daaaaaaaah..._
*DAH!
Does anything happen, i.e do you die, if you don’t deal with the cat Manannon?
There are several rooms in the castle that the cat may appear in. Each time you enter one of those rooms, an RNG determines whether he actually does. Once he's there, you must complete both steps of the puzzle before you leave the screen, or else the game becomes unwinnable.
But, because it's an RNG, there's a chance you'll never encounter him. So it's still technically optional.
@@shadyparadox Thanks for the response! I was trying to experiment myself to see if there was any repercussions to not dealing with the cat, but I guess ultimately it's just missing out on points if you get lucky enough to not get the RNG to run into the cat.
