This is a replacement longplay for an old existing one already done by Marlene55M because that one was done in 720p which is nonexisting resolution and ratio for such an old game.
King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder! returns to the King in his attempt to rescue both his kingdom and family from Mordack, Hagatha's and Manannan's brother and also an evil magician, in the land of Serenia. Originally released in November 1990, it featured a significant improvement in graphics (achieved through the introduction of VGA into the series). It was also the first King's Quest installment to replace the typing user interface with a point-and-click user interface. The title is a spoof on the proverb, "Absence makes the heart grow fonder." -

The desert was perhaps the worst part. You had to map it yourself (and don't forget to write down where the important items and landmarks are) and you had to frequently find an oasis or water in general so you don't die of thirst.

It's a very hard game and you can get a game over without knowing it (drink the soup for example before the yeti). A friend of mine at middle school had a book of walkthrough and let me saw it for 5 minutes at week. It was a battle, but with a few of tips i managed to finished the game. Nowadays i know if i was able to get through King Quest V i can get through everything.

Both Sierras version and this one is unique, the art sytle is just captivating. I remember searching for guides and replaying it to get the best score.
Im only turning 17 and I know this series is one of the best games I stumbled accidentally when I was searching for free games so far. This also led me to buy the King Quest game in PS4. Im now a fan of this well rounded game! Thanks for the little nostalgia I remembered

I only got to the beach using an instruction manual and made no further progress. There are things that you can do in this game that make it impossible to progress any further but the game gives you no fair warning. For example, you can't eat the custard pie, you have to save it for the Yeti. If you go into the forest without the amulet or the genie lamp you can never get out. And if the cat catches the mouse then too bad, you should have been quicker. Yet the game lets you keep trying even though there is no hope. Otherwise the game was enjoyable, and the graphics were very good for the early 1990's.

This series is so nostalgic since I played it with my family as a kid, but I don't know how we ever figured out half of the solutions. I think this might be the most unfairly difficult game in the series (aside from the Rumpelstiltskin puzzle in KQ1). One of the things that struck me on my current playthrough was: How would I ever know to try searching the haystack again after saving the ants? I already tried searching it earlier and there was no indication that there was something to find in there. The ants are at least a couple screens away and have no apparent correlation with the haystack.

I tried to play this back in the day - except I didn't have a sound blaster - I never even knew there was full audio.

Actually, Mannannan started the whole mess by kidnapping Alexander when he was an infant.

Right. If he didn’t want to do the cat time, he shouldn’t have done all those crimes.

Probably my favorite of the Kings Quest's. At least I-V, I never played 6 or 7

Ohhh, the explosion of memories from my childhood happening in my head right now!!
God, the HOURS I spent on this game.
I didn’t realize at the time just how hideous the voiceover work is! (I seem to recall reading somewhere that the developers didn’t have any money leftover in the budget to hire actual voice actors, so they had to do it themselves; is that right, does anyone know? Sure sounds like it! 😬)

To correct: Cedric's voice acting shouldent really be called voice acting! Esp when he says: "Watch out Graham! A POISONOUS SNAKE !!!" 😄 Other than that its kinda half decent.

I am currently playing this game. I always wanted it when I was a kid but by the time we got a VGA in 93, I was interested in other games at the time. Anyway, were there points in this game and where can you view them if there is? By the way I am using your walkthrough when I get stuck, thanks for posting this.

Hi! If you use an object unproperly, it may happen that you get stucked in the game and cannot advance? It happened to me with the golden heart and with the cat/rat issue!

the cat/rat issues seems to be a problem to me
I saw the cat catching the rat earlier when I first entered the scene after getting out of bakery, I didn't even had anything with me......now I am waiting for it to happen again
